I didnt want to comment and jinx things but I didnt have a TV feed here in Ohio so I "watched" the game toggling back and forth between ESPN gamecast (which is just about useless in Hockey it's so behind the action) and you guys.
You think YOU were nervous - try following the game with "woo", "MY MAN" "bullshit call" and "fuckity, fuck, fuck" as your play by play.
But we won right? Prolly have to do this again so as to not screw up the karma.
Edit: Was going to say the same thing Alum96. I cannot even count how many games in the 90s where the Wings would massively outplay, outshoot, outeverything but outscore the other team and lose - usually at home. I didnt see it obviously but 46-14 speaks for itslef that's for sure.

The problem is JORDAN is the one pepetuating the "myth":
"Jordan invited Herring to a ceremony at Chicago’s United Center after his first retirement, in 1994, when a statue was unveiled and his number retired. Jordan furthered the “I got cut” myth during the ceremony, and offered backhanded praise. Jordan noted how much Herring worked with him to improve his game, then added the zinger, “”He knew he made a mistake! He just tried to correct it.”
The article goes on to say the core reason Jordan was put on JV was because he was too short at the time and the coach wanted him to get PT but clearly Jordan thinks he was cut from the team.

You got it with one caveat. I would not select a QB, no matter how physically gifted, that was as stupid as Jeff George must've been. Not sure if you remember him but he was the guy that the term "great hardware but crappy software" was written about - arm like a cannon but zero ability to read defenses and make good on field decisions.

Not true - we don't "all want to come back" or at least this one fan doesnt. During my first year of not attending Michigan football games in person in 30+ years I found other things to do on Saturday afternoons that I liked quite a bit thank you very much and probably wont give up anytime soon. Oh I'll go back for a game or two each year and I'll catch all others on TV but the days of getting up and driving three hours one way there and back again to watch Eastern Michigan are long gone. And you can thank your heros Dave Brandon & Brady Hoke for ending that habit for me.
I know in your mind there is nothing Michigan can do either on or off the field that would cause you to arrive at the same decision I did and God bless you for that. No product on the field too shitty to watch and no price too high for you to pay to be denied the opportunity to listen to piped in music blasted over the loudspeakers. But I reached a breaking point last year and it would seem, based on the raw numbers, that I wasnt alone. And guess what? Once you fill those 12 hours on Saturday with something else you find life moves on pretty well and I can still enjoy each and every game on TV from the comforts of my basement.

Trust me - it's easier to teach smart people things than it is stupid people. They "get it" quicker and they retain it longer. If I was a GM in the NFL I would put a lot of stock in the score at QB, Center and any position that involved thinking and not simply reacting to what's happening directly in front of them.

There's a lot of good ones but my Browns stand alone at the bottom of the list. What other organization can boast the following:
1. Repeated blown first round draft picks (literally too many to list)
2. A revolving door of head coaches
3. A revolving door of GMs & Team Presidents
4. First owner dies, second owner completely disengaged & third owner, while under federal indictment, meddles constantly in football operations
5. A GM, in direct violation of NFL rules, texting the sideline during games
6. That same GM now suspended for multiple games next season
7. A "celebrity" QB taken more for marketing appeal than football talent who ends in rehab
8. An all-Pro wide out who gets suspended by the league not one, not twice, but three times for repeated substance abuse violations. Same wide out claims "second hand smoke" was the culprit on one his violations and has two separate DUIs.
9. An OC who quits the team mid-contract in disgust
10. In the face of everything above - the Browns raise ticket prices

Speaking as a guy who's watched almost every minute of every Cleveland Cavalier game this year I can tell you that the only time the offense DOESNT work is when LeBron dominates the ball and tries to play hero-ball.
If Brian (or anyone else) watched any of their games since they added Smith & Mozgov to the starting line-up you'd see many possessions where the ball is passed rapidly 7-8 times before finding a wide-open shooter on the wing or finishing with a Lebron or Mozgov dunk. The speed in which the ball is moving is at a pace you simply do not see in college ball.
The days of the exclusive high pick n roll & two-man game are largely gone from the NBA. If you havent seen it in a while it's changed a LOT and I agree with Cuban - it's changed for the better.

Very. So he's going back to Community College and I'm "buying" his grades back (he takes out a loan and I pay back based on his grade-100% for an A, 75% for a B and nothing after that).
My 10 year old is freaking brilliant (he's adopted so I cant claim his genetic excellence) so I'm 99% sure he's going to go to school somewhere expensive. Either way you can move the money between accounts too if you have more than one kid like we do so if one doesnt go you can push the money to the one that does.

I think you're missing my point. The unintellegent claim doesnt stem from where they want to go (that's completely up to them), the unintellegent claim stems from the misguided belief on the part of the kid AND THE PARENTS, that "this can never happen to MY boy". That type of mindset prevents them from demanding assurances that they will be given four years no matter what.
How hard would it be to simply ask the coach to put it in writing that they guarentee a four year ride? The only reason you wouldnt IMO would be because:
A. You havent done any research and therefore dont know that the coach oversigns and cuts (either irresponsible or dumb - you pick)
B. You simply cannot fathom your special snowflake of a son being cut (again either irresponsible or dumb - you pick)
Sorry but as a dad I think the blame falls just as much on the parents as anybody in this equation and they could easily stop it if they simply took the time to investigate the background of these shady coaches.
But I do think that players and parents who dont do that aren't very bright.

I have come to the conclusion that your average 3-5 star football player must have the brains of a wood tic coupled with the ego of Leonardo Dicaprio. And they must be parented by parents of similar intelect and over-evaluation of self-worth.
If one of my kids was recruited by a coach known to oversign and cut (see Miles, Les, Meyer, Urban or Saban, Nick) I would DEMAND a written guarentee my son gets a four year ride before I'd consider signing a LOI. And if they wouldnt provide it he'd be attending one of the other hundreds of schools undoubtably interested in him because it those guys are offering scholly's, my kid is damn good.
Why this is hard to understand is hard for me to understand.

|3 weeks 3 days ago||Yes and Yes||
I am not claiming that every person paid X amount generates X amount of value. I am also not claiming that the business world is not riddled with people hopelessly misplaced and unable to do the job they were hired for (Lord knows I've worked with a few). But everyone of those idiots were "worth" what the company was willing to pay them right up to when they were fired and then they were "worth" zero.
If the question had been asked "Did U of M get 5MM of VALUE from hiring Jim Harbaugh?" the answer, to me at least, would be a hell yes. But the question is "was he worth it" and that's a whole different issue altogether.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||I disagree||
If you are in the working world right now you went to a job this morning where you and your employer decided what your "worth" was. Nobody forced you to accept it and nobody forced your employer to offer it. If you're really good at it (like Harbaugh) chances are others will want you to work for them and your "worth" will go up. If you really suck at it (like Hoke) your employer will prolly not want you around long and they'll let you go and your "worth" will probably go down.
But at the end of the day whether you like it or not - your worth is defined by what you and a third party agree it to be. Just like when you sell a house, a baseball card or a used blender. The state does not determine this value. YOU determine this value. And it doesnt matter if your friends, family or anyone else (like a random internet poster) doesnt think you're "worth" it - the fact that your employer and you do agree is all that matters.
So is Hargaugh worth 5MM? Absofuckinglutely. Not a dollar more or a dolllar less. That's a free market at work boys and girls.

|3 weeks 3 days ago||Thanks - I misread the post||
Hell then people gave even less of a shit about that back in the day. I dont think they had even invented "MIP" back then. It simply didnt exist or if it did nobody i knew ever got tagged with it. I'm sorry but hitting a college kid with a MIP unless he's beligerent, starting a fight or flame-thrower drunk is just stupid IMO.
I'm kinda glad I'm old. Ann Arbor from 78-81 featured:
1. Drinking age of 18 (my senior year they bumped it to 21 but it wasnt really enforced)
2. Possession of less than 2 ounces of pot was a $5.00 fine
3. All football games started at 1:00pm, you could bring ANYTHING you wanted as long as it wasnt glass (pony kegs were just fine), we could pass up coeds, sit wherever the fuck we wanted and Bo was the coach.
Doesn't Ann Arbor's finest have anything better to do than arrest a freaking college kid for underage drinking?
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Yes he is worth 5MM - EXACTLY 5MM||
The whole concept of is somebody "worth" their salary to me is ridiculous. Of course he is because somebody (in this case us) was willing to pay him 5MM and he was willing to take it. Therefore he's "worth" exactly 5MM per year. Just like houses, cars, collectables - you name it - the free market decides what something is "worth" and no matter how much it bothers some people - in a relatively free market your worth is defined by the dollars someone is willing to pay and you're willing to accept.
It drives me nuts to hear people bitch about celebrity income or sports salaries. Because unless they're going into the negotiations with a gun they are "worth" exactly what someone is willing to pay them and they are willing to work for. Not a dollar more or a dollar less.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Not saying it was better but||
Not saying it was better but back when I was a lad the drinking age was 18, I had a fake at 15 (what a joke that was - I looked all of 12) and nobody and I mean NOBODY gave two shits if you drank and even drove as long as you didnt hurt anybody. Cops basically either called your parents (if you were ultra-drunk) or got somebody else to drive the car and told you to be careful and sent you on your way. Nobody got arrested unless they were a world class asshole to the cops or so wasted they couldnt stand up.
Man has the pendulum swung hard the other way. Now - having a couple of drinks and driving is considered a crime against humanity and punished accordingly.

FWIW way back in the day I took a poli-sci class at Michigan and the prof insisted that nuclear war would be launched against the US or the USSR the day before something like this went on the grid. Because once a force field (or a comprehensive and functional anti-missle missle system) was in place that country wouldn't be under the threat of mutually assured destruction any longer.

That's interestiing. So unlike football & basketball where the NCAA makes the eligibility rules in hockey it's the professional league and in some cases even the team themselves that decides who can stay and who needs to go? That's quite different from what I see in other sports and not at all what I thought.
Thanks for explaining that to me.

A fraternity brother of mine was the team manager for the 80 & 81 seasons. Those were VERY fun to watch (Mike McGee, the Bodner twins, Paul Heurman and Thad Garner) and he insisted that Frieder did ALL the coaching and Johnny Orr was just a figurehead and the HC in name only.
I really liked Frieder and LOVED his 85-89 teams even though they underachieved in the tourny for the most part. What a lot of people forget is that the 89 National Champs were ALL his recruits and while Fisher took them to the title, Frieder was resonsible for putting the team together.

We should be sending him thank you cards - not repeated posts making fun of his misfortune.

|4 weeks 6 days ago||Not the same||
For years this was my favorite week of the year. Starting today, worrying about where Michigan was going to get placed and how hight they'd be seeded. And taking Thursday afternoon and all day Friday off work and holing up in my basement with beer, food and a remote control to watch basketball from tipoff noon Thursday through the last game on Sunday. It was fantastic.
But sometime between 1998 and 2008 I stopped doing that. It just wasnt the same with Michigan not playing. The last few years I brought that tradition back (just as awesome as ever) but this year Thursday at noon will be just another day at work. I'm bummed.
I feel an atheist's kid on Christmas morning. All my buddies are getting presents and I'm not.

I'm reading Bruce Hooley & other local sports media tweets and there are a few general observations I find interesting:
1. Hell of a hire by Michigan. Unexpected and a major coup.

|5 weeks 1 day ago||No refs arent stupid and they||
No refs arent stupid and they know if they "balance out" the calls with a bunch of meaningless fouls late in a game the box score will look far different than the actual game flow.
But in this case it's putting lipstick on a pig. 2 FTs vs 16 and 13 fouls vs 5, especially when one team is widely known as a non-fouling finese team and the other plays a brusing, physical style of basketball speaks for itself.
B1G tourny with B1G refs gets what B1G wants. And the B1G definitely WANTS Wisconsin to at least make the finals of this thing so they have a legitimate shot at a #1 seed. They are trying to help ther own here.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||The B1G tournament is nothing||
The B1G tournament is nothing more than a cash-grab for TV. If anyone thinks for a second that the officials, paid by the B1G, are not aware that #5 ranked Wisconsin and not a one game over 500 scrappy Michigan squad, makes for MUCH better ratings they're quite naive.
The B1G needs Wisky to advance here so they will advance here.

|5 weeks 4 days ago||It probably bothers me more||
It probably bothers me more in retrospect than it did at the time to be honest. Nobody else seemed terribly worried about it and once it was done I was more thrilled to be an active and out of pledgedom than anything else to be giving it (or anything else for that matter) much in the way of deep thought.
I will say though that one of my pledge brothers (who is now a Michigan Judge - not sure which court) is black and after the night of the burning cross I DO remember a lot "I wonder how James felt about last night" type nervous comments. It was clear that at least some people were making the connection - even if it wasnt intended.T
To be completely fair though it is entirely possible that the KKK stole their rituals FROM my fraternity - not the other way around. We were founded in 1855 - the KKK didnt get their start until 1865. There may have been some "brothers" who were part of starting the organization that borrowed some of the more theatrical rituals as I dont know the date of their respective origins.

It was founded at Miami of Ohio along with two other fraterities so not exactly in the cradle of the deep south. And it's doubtful he had to go to the national chapter to discover anything - the rituals he described to Wendy are part of the pledge initiation.
And the "secret room"? That was just the chapter room which you have to be a verified brother to enter. They are in every one of the houses - not just national - and there's nothing nefarious about them.
To be clear I dont share Wendy's husband assessment of the house being KKK influence but I absolutely understand why he would.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Hard to say. I do know that||
Hard to say. I do know that at the Michigan chapter they woke us up as pledges at God knows what time and dragged us out to a field to watch the burning cross in the middle of the night in the middle of a field. What was burning on the cross is actually one of the funnier stories from my pledgedom (women's tampons) but that's another story for another day.
One thing he told you that isnt accurate or at least isnt completely accurate is the pointy hoods. They were just hoods but still - I could see why he'd think they were when combined with the other stuff he was seeing during his final week as a pledge.

Wendy I was in the same Fraternity your husband was in and he's 100% correct on the rituals in the initiation bearing a very close resemblance to the KKK rituals you mention. Ahhh children. Pull up a chair around the fire and let Grandpa MGrowOld tell you all about the long and storied tradition of Michigan getting fucked over by referees. Some of you kids dont know that putting the screws to Michigan is something that officials and referees from sea to shining sea take great pride in.
From fumbles in Rose Bowls being called Touchdowns and phantom holding calls wiping out a sure TD. Recievers tripped in the end zone and extra time on the clock for oppenents to win. Clean blocks in basketball called fouls and teams allowed (in certain buildings) to commit assult without punishments. And goals in hockey waived off for reasons unclear has been going on for decades.
Regardless of football's pre-Harbaugh condition Michigan is and will forever be the crown jewel of the B1G - in both athletics & academics - and while it's good to be king the king is usually hated by the commoners. And we are.
Nothing new here. I dont even have to see it to know it was bad, made little or no sense and benefited greatly the team we were playing against.

It appears to me that the HIPAA didnt come into play because the University said in essence "we're being sued and the person with the information on the case works for us - they are not independent."
If a Dr is sued for malpractice they are allowed to introduce patient records - the patient through their litigation creates the hole in the HiPAA protection. How is this situation any different?

I can clearly see both sides of this arguement. On one hand the University must defend itself and they are accessing the records of one of their employees in doing so. On the otther - the person seeking counseling would have no reasonable way of knowing in advance that they are are talking to a representative of the group they might someday be seeking damages from when they seek the needed counseling. To me at least there is no clear right or wrong answer here.
I think I understand now why Solomon suggested cutting the baby in half.
