I put down a $100 deposit for a partial season ticket plan about 10 minutes after the announcement. In the four hours since then the Cavs have raised the amount you have to put down to $200 to hold a place in line.
Phone lines for tickets are jammed and there's a crowd around Quicken Arena yelling, chanting and generally going nuts.
What a difference a day (and LeBron's second decision) makes.

I know. Isn't is AWESOME? I'll be happy to pick one up for you and Shembo - what size do you need?
Look. The last time this area won ANYTHING I was exactly five years old (1964) and living in Pontiac. If my memory serves in that time span the good folks of my home state have won two World Series and appeared in four, won four Stanley Cups and appeared in six, won three NBA titles and appeared in five. That's not bad. in those 50 years a team from Detroit has either won or appeared in a final of one of the big four sports every 3.3 years and won it all about 5 years.
Cleveland has appeared in two World Series and lost both and one NBA final and got swept. That really sucks.

Common Don. What does Jerry HANLON know about modern, space-age, offensive line coaching???? He's one of those coaching dinosaurs who clings to that pre-historic notion that the moving the guy in front of you backwards was one of the fundimental premises of effective blocking. He also thought that keeping the man in front of you from getting to where he wanted to go (say on a pass play for example) could also be effective. How quant!
Knowdays we have evolved and teach more refined, cerebral techniques. Those old-fashioned notions of blocking are long-gone my friend.

That's what's being reported here in Cleveland. That IF Lebron agrees to sign Cleveland has a sign & trade deal in place with the T-Wolves for Love in exchange for Waiters, Wiggins and one of our three #1's next year. There is some debate on if both Waiters and Wiggins are being packaged but that's the rumor.
The other interestng nugget is that Anthony Bennett has apparently reported for summer bal looking like a greek god. Lost about 30 pounds and is tearing it up in summer play.
|3 days 16 hours ago||My issue with Brandon is||
My issue with Brandon is threefold. One: that he treated me like a bottomless pit of money willing to hand over anything to him to fund sports I dont personally care to support. For all the talk on the board about how wonderful the non-revenue facilities are now - how many people actually...you know...ATTEND any of their games? I don't and I resented and ultimately rebelled at the idea that I had to support them (through my wallet) if I wanted to maintain my football season tickets.
My second issue is that despite supporting the athletic department financially for the better part of 25 years through six season tickets, mulitiple bowl games and thousands of dollars of indivicual giving - neither he nor anyone in the department could be bothered to respond to any of my three emails expressing my displeasure over issue #1. A simple "we hear you but this is why we're doing this" would've gone a LONG way in keeping me in the fold. But they didn't - they were too busy crafting their latest e-blast campaign to implore me to buy even more tickets to worry about responding to talking to me on any level.
My third issue is how badly he's treated the students who are the very lifeblood of our future support. Dave has given them all a collective middle finger acting like they dont matter and they do. This is their team and their school (just like it was mine from 78-81) and the distain and disrespect Brandon provides them is appalling. I don't know if a student boycot of a game this fall is for real or not but if it actually happens it's 100% in response to Brandon's scorched earth policy towards the student base. I feel like I owe the students an apology on behalf of my generation thanks to Brandon.
So fuck Dave Brandon. I truly hope all those supporters in this thread have lots and lots of money and lots and lots of friends with money cause a whole lot of people like me have checked OUT of financially supporting the football team because of him.

I think road games are an absolute blast. I've been to Wisconsin twice, Notre Dame twice Purdue, MSU and OSU.
Favorite for Friday night party: Wisconsin
Favorite for Saturday tailgate: Notre Dame
Favorite for game experience: Notre Dame
Least favorite: Purdue (place just sucked)
We went to the 2006 & 2010 ND games so I'm 2-0 against Touchdown Jesus. In 2006 we set up our tailgate on the front lawn of somebody's house across from the stadium and not long after we got set up a guy set a BBQ stand next to us and traded us sandwhiches for beers. Then the house next to us filled up with the following families: The Long's, the Henne's & the Rivas's (apparently Mr Rivas went to every Michigan game home and away even though he lived in Miami). Mrs Henne had a list of all the players families and was on the phone coordinating getting everybody to our little location which was pretty damn cool.
So between the BBQ guy, meeting the players families and kicking ND's over-rated ass that was one hell of a road trip.

True but think for a second what could've been if the rumors and negative recruiting hadnt scared off some of the bigger fish that at one time had Michigan as their favorite. Hoke has shown the ability to get recruits at the highest level to consider and commit, I am convinced that if last year hadnt tanked so badly we'd be looking at a recruiting class for the ages.
Hoke has done very well recruiting make no mistake. But I think he has the abiity to be truly great here. And once the whispers about his job security go away I think he will.

9-3 with competitive losses to ND, MSU & OSU but wins everywhere else. A second place finish in the East. A New Years Day Bowl win over a middle tier SEC team giving the team a lot of positive national buzz going into 2015.
Fueled by this season't resurgance Hoke's strength, recruiting, returns to the extremely high level he's shown he's capable of. The end of the whispers about Hoke's future and a high level of optimism and expectations for 2015. And rumors of Nuss potentially leaving to take a high-profile HC gig elsewhere.

Kyrie, Waiters, Wiggins, Thompson and Varejeo are definitely a better, younger and more stable long-term option than Bosh, a broken down Wade and whatever scraps Miami can put together after that.

If you've got a team that isnt real sure of itself and needs encouragement you want to be shoulder to shoulder with them on the field. But my question is - isn't that what Brady was suppose to be doing? I thought that he was sort of the "Chief Encourgement Officer" on the team. Or is that just for the defense?

If it's been answered anywhere Ken I surely missed it. I've seen mulitple threads bitching about it but I've never seen anyone answer the question - why isnt it stopped? If everyone hates it (as you state) then I'm amazed more isnt done to put an end to it. And to the casual fan (like me) it simply doesnt make sense why something everyone hates is allowed to continue and is seemingly rewarded.
The nine year old analogy works if you've ever been a parent of a nine year old who has allegedly injured themselves and is challenged. They will "sell it" to mom or dad and dial up the intensity of the crying and wailing directly proportional to how much mom or dad challenge the severity of the hurt. And it ends when they realize they arent getting the desired result (attention or in the case of soccer players - yellow or red cards) and refs, like parents, have the power to stop it.

Whining about it constantly? Try asking a question on why it's NOT cracked down on given, what seems to me, to be very competent officiating otherwise. My original question was just that - why isnt it stopped if nobody likes it? That's what I, the "every four year soccer fan" doesnt understand.
|1 week 5 days ago||But I DO like soccer. What I||
But I DO like soccer. What I dont like are players acting like they've just suffered a near-fatal shin injury when they get grazed. "Selling it" in other sports doesnt seem (to me anyways) to involve faking a near death experience which is what bothers me the most watching the floppers flop. Fine to go down but stop rolling around like my 9 year old when you got a boo-boo and you want kisses from mom to make it better.
I'm not saying it doesnt happen in all sports - clearly it does. But to this observer's eyes it seems like in soccer they have to massively embelish the severity of their injury so often it's silly.
|1 week 5 days ago||I have a question for the||
I have a question for the soccer people (which I obviously am not). I watched the Algeria-Germany match yesterday and was amazed at how well the officials did at calling offsides. I mean guys could be an inch offsides and they seemed to be accurately called on it again and again.
So why is it the same officials have these insanely keen eye for offsides suddenly cant figure out when a player dives if he's faking or not? Some of the stuff they allow and candidly reward seems SO obvious to me I cant believe they dont just run over and tell the player to stop being such a pussy, get up and keep playing.
Why is that?

So I click on the link Brian provides to bring back the memories of 1978 (my Freshman year) and hear that music one more time. About 10 seconds into it I realize that I've got the volume up too loud (I'm at work) as people are walking by my office wondering what 70's porn I'm obviously watching on my computer.
Then the power goes out in our building shutting down my keyboard and my screen but not my volume. That's running through my laptop which has now switched to battery mode and is only too happy to play loudly the Michigan Reply sound track in our now silent office other than me. I can't turn it off (my laptop is wired into my monitor & keyboard) and I cant turn it down and I've apparently clicked on "repeat" cause the damn thing kept playing and playing and playing for the entire 5 minutes or so our power was down. And because my monitor was black I'm 100% sure people here in Ohio hearing that music are sure your's truly was spending his afternoon surfing websites he shouldnt be looking at.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||Here's the difference Turd||
Here's the difference Turd and why there was SO much angst around here when it happened. Lebron was one of "us" and supposidly understood just how much pain this area has felt sport-wise from repeated agonizing failures to win it all. He was suppose to be the one to finally lead the city to the championship they've craved for so long and was obviously the best player in the world.
Then the 2010 season rolled around and while Lebron wouldnt talk about his contract during the season he did lead the Cavs to the best record in the NBA and a #1 seed in the playoffs. Then, in game 5 of the series against Boston, he basically quit on the floor (I was there and seated a couple of rows from his mom Gloria) and watched it first-hand. It was like he was in a complete and utter fog the whole game and we lost that game and then the series in game 6.
Then "the Decision" happens at the last possible moment for free agency boxing the Cavs into not being able to sign anybody else and have to hope he would stay at home cause there was no way for a Plan B. By waiting until he did he pinned the Cavs down from making any other moves that couldve kept them competitive in 2011 so we waited and we hoped.
When it was announced he was making his decision on live TV we were just SURE he was staying put. No way would a kid from Northern Ohio go on national TV and humiliate the city by announcing he was leaving. So we held our breath and when he said "I'm taking my talents to South Beach" the area melted down emotionally knowing that the team was screwed and wondering did he tank game against Boston (yes I know the rumors about Gloria and Delonte West) to lose on purpose? It was like getting kicked in the balls in front of the entire world and it hurt like hell.
The best analogy I can think of would be if at a wedding the best man took the mike and in front of everyone got down on his knee in front of his long-time girlfriend and said "now's as good of a time as any to say this.....I'M BREAKING UP WITH YOU...HA HA HA HA."
So yeah, I DO think just about any other city given the background, the circmustances and how it was done would react the same. And I really, really, really hope he comes back in spite of it all.

What I dont get is why players continue to commit to schools that do this year in and year out to players who underperform expectations. Seems like that would be a pretty effective counter-arguement to any coach recruiting against an SEC school but for some reasons it doesnt seem to resonate with the decision maker.
I'll tell you this - as a parent I would absolute stop my son from going to a school offering a one year renewable instead of a four year guarentee if he had a choice between the two.

None taken. I just had a short debate with a couple of people in my office who were saying they werent quite sure if they wanted to win a championship "that way" if it meant Lebron coming back to the Cavs after the way he left.
I reminded them that this city HASNT WON A FUCKING THING SINCE 1964.
I was one of the most vocal "haters" you will ever find but I'd take him back in a New York second if he'll come. He's the best basketball player on the planet and I'm sorry but our chances to win jump exponentially if he's here and I love the Cavs more than I hate Lebron.
All that being said I do wonder if this isnt just another chance to troll the fans here again what with his wife's Instagram post and now this. Talk about a place losing its collective mind if that happens.......

1. While cool that Brian was quoted and MgoBlog got a shout-out I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what the lead paragraph (general fan malaise) had to do with the balance of the article (shifting population trends). It seemed to me like the author had a good quote from Brian he went with even though it didnt really fit in with the balance of what he was writing about.
2. Which ad did you watch to "unlock" the article? I went with Graceland cause I thought there might be some hot chicks in it and other than a few quick cuts it was pretty disapointing. And no, I did not put it on my calendar to make sure I watched it as they suggested I do.

I just noticed something that looks odd to me:

I mean how is that even possible? Was he continuing to drink beers during his arrest?

|4 weeks 2 days ago||This looks like one of those||
This looks like one of those threads where the OP thinks he's going to get mad love from the board over a post and when it goes the other way he's not sure how to get out of it.
I remember posting something not long ago I thought was quite brilliant or funny or both only to have it roundly smashed by the voters. I tried to save face by "explaining" that what I wrote wasnt exactly what I meant which then made things even worse. Finally I decided to cut my losses, leave the thread and pray for new stuff to get posted so my "brilliance" would get shoved off the front page and go to it's merciful death.

I know I'm late to this party but when I read Wolverine Devotee's post on tweeting Peppers I literally let out an audible "ugh".
And then - the very first response was you with an "ugh". Why do people insist on tweeting total and complete strangers regardless of their percieved "connection". I do not get it.
Perhaps it would be helpful if Brian and other bloggers, say from 11W, wrote articles with helpful hints and posted them on the front page for others to read.

I actually am - thanks for asking. But given that the OP's premise is whimsical I thought it would be fun to look at players from the past who had skills that might translate to the gameplay. Rudy T was a incredible outside shooter who could take the ball to the hole when needed and Cazzie was a multidimensional player who was probably not the best choice but hey...this is Michigan and no discussion of Michigan players can be complete with Cazzie in their someplace. And everybody had already given what was probably the obvious choice C-Webb & either Nik or Rice so was just trying to be a bit different and look at players from a different era.
My first two choices were Alan Hardy (fierce dunker) and Marty Bodner for whatever that's worth.

If you havent been to Gettysburg I highly recommend the trip. I took the family there this past Spring Break and it's breathtaking in it's historical significance. Truly "Hallowed Ground" for an American and I dont care which side you'd be on. They've recently spent over 20 million renovating the musuem (awesome), the Diorama (awesome) and beefed up the tour bus guide information (also awesome).
They also do a lot of nightly "ghost tours" and while personally do not believe in ghosts I must confess if they do exist....they exist there.
And Chamberlain was my favorite Civil War hero too.....

I looked and couldnt find it - largely cause I cant remember what StevenR titled it. Basically it was him asking the board to be more careful with the posting of various pics of women in states of undress out of respect for his wife. And then hilarity ensued as Stephen's request prompted all kinds of responses exactly the opposite of what he was hoping for.
To this day I'm pissed I missed it. I went to bed about five minutes (if memory serves) before he posted it. I remember reading it in the morning and just about pissing myself laughing. It was truly one of hte epic threads of all time.

Hypothetical question for the board related to the topic. Should people who've elected NOT to donate organs be allowed to recieve a transplant if one is needed? It's always bothered me to some degree that some people make a conscience decision to NOT allow their organs to be harvested are allowed to recieve others. Seems to me that if you dont want to give then you dont get. Make that that change and I think you'd immediately see the active donor list skyrocket overnight.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||The headline of her article||
The headline of her article is insulting to the students IMO.
"Amid fickle students, comforts of home, schools scramble to unload football tickets"
Today's students are no more "fickle" than they were back in 1981 when I was a student. They are fans who are fed up with being shat upon by an Athletic Department who treats them as an unpleasant nusance and makes their gameday experience exponentially more unpleasant than the one I enjoyed centuries ago.
When I was in school tickets were cheap, we could sell them to anybody who wanted tot buy them and not just other students, we could bring in ANYTHING that wasnt in a bottle (including kegs BTW), could sit where we wanted for the most part (meaning with friends) and get into the stadium just like the everybody else. I feel pretty safe in saying that if I forced back in the day to go through the bullshit we put today's students through I'd probably have taken the same route many of them have and told the Athletic Department to shove it and found something else to do on Saturday afternoons in the fall.
|5 weeks 2 days ago||This!!!!!!!!!!!!||
I dont think in four years on the blog I've ever written "this" but the above post by Nija is so good, so accurate and so completely on the mark I'm going to break that streak.
Nija is absolutely correct on all counts. I've spent a lifetime in marketing for several large companies and what he describes is 100% correct - both in the way companies view customers and the substandard methods in which Brandon is marketing Michigan football (his current product from his perspective).
FWIW I worked with a "Brandon-like" CEO for several years whe was just sure of two things:
1. He could convince the customers to buy anything (afterall they are stupid you know)
2. He was not only the smartest guy in the room - he was the smartest guy in every room and any dissenting opinion was quickly squashed.
I dont know what working with Brandon is like but my guess is he's like that given the number of smart people the Michigan Athletic Depatment employ's and the number of mind-numbingly stupid decisions they seem determined to make.

I have NEVER heard the Big House that loud and the place literally shook (watch the replay of the game and you'll see what I mean) during OT. I was screaming at the MSU fans "not dead yet" as it unfolded and left the game with zero vocal cords and my feet and hands were bleeding from hitting the stands. Totally wild game.
Rose Bowl 1998 where we won the MNC for the first time in my life. Unbelievably exciting game with a crazy finish. |5 weeks 5 days ago||I respectfully disagree.||
I respectfully disagree. Attendance may not be an issue next year but season ticket sales will most likely continue to fall IMO. Many long-time holders of tickets in specific areas, once gone, are highly unlikely to want to purchase less desireable season tickets just for the "right" to sit in a particular seat all year - especially when the secondary market is so easy to access and presents a much more affordable option once you remove the PSL fees from the equation. I think once the inertia of "I renew my tickets because I've always renewed my tickets" gets broken it will be VERY hard to get back. I do think, however, the ticket packages will be quite popular, especially since they will be able to sell an anchor game including ND, MSU or OSU to move tickets for other, less diserable games.
Given the schedule and the likelyhood Michigan will be fielding a very good team next year I think the seats will most likely get filled but method of filling them, IMO, will be different.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||A couple are. You got me||
A couple are. You got me wondering so I checked just now on StubHub to see what tickets were selling for in my old area. Section 3, row 27, seats 24-27 (basically on the 30 yard line - visitors) and there were two seats sold in the $200s for PSU and one package in the $300s for PSU but nothing was moving for any other games.
Also there are currently 12 season ticket packages available in section three - and only one has sold and it was for face value so the seller paid the PSL and got back their ticket price. If memory serves there isnt much traffic until the tickets are actually issued and then things heat up quite a bit.

In my mind you get them too but insted of telling you there's a report due tomorrow they say things like "Ricky Leach's Birthday - Due in two days" or "Anniversary of Tom Harmon's Heisman acceptance speach - Due in one hour".
Is that how you do it or do you have some other reminder system? Either way it's impressive!

Might I make one more suggestion? Can you compile the teams as they are assembled so far? Perhaps a simple chart (and you guys definitely know your way around a chart) showing each of the respective team "owners" and the players they selected by round. If you wanted to get really fancy you could even link the name of the player in the chart back to the write-up so lazy people like me can pick and choose to read about what you wrote about players I give a shit about.
Just a thought.

I dont get the financial analysis of the decision (especially at the $15 level) by people spending hours and hours on a free site. It's supporting the blog and the people who run it - that in itself makes it worthwhile IMO.

I guess the fact that representatives for NASA were on NPR, Good Morning America & the Today show on Friday talking up the damn thing somehow made me think THEY thought it was going to be something special. Silly me. I should've just paid attention to their disclaimer and not actually listened to them when they said this "could be on a prolific show" and other hyperbole.
Look - the only reason I knew the damn thing was a thing at all was due to their media blitz on it. So pardon me if I thought that NASA going out and telling everyone to look at the night sky between 2-4am last Friday was an indication something bigger than a normal summer night meteor shower was about to occur.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||FWIW my brother kept his two||

From Nasa: "North America will have a great view of the May Camelopardalids meteor shower tonight. To help make sure of that, NASA has set up alive stream of the event, including views from the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.
The never-before-seen meteor shower should hit close to midnight and run through Saturday's first few hours. NASA says 200 meteors may whiz by in an hour with even more remaining possible. NASA experts say there hasn't been a shower like this before.
The shower gets its name from the constellation Camelopardalids, also known as the Giraffe, which is where the shooting starts will originate."
Your right - no promise. But they sure did set the expectations bar just a wee bit higher than actual dont you think?

Yes it was a total flop. A total and complete flop. I stood in the middle of about a 25 acre field near Alpena about 50 miles from the nearest light of any kind. In other words - a perfect spot to view the cellestial firestorm that NASA promised. AND i got my entire family up and out of bed to join me cause "you dont want to miss this guys - if you do you'll kick yourselves for the rest of your lives."
So at about 3:00am, after staring at the admidty lovely but completely devoid of action night sky for over 90 minutes I had everybody in my family ready to kill me and I was just SURE that if we left all hell would break loose in the sky and we'd miss everything. So we stayed til about 3:30am and then I took everybody back to the lodge - pissed off, wondering if we were now infested with ticks (those bastards are everywhere up north) and tired as hell.
Fuck NASA and their stupid, wrong worthless predictions. Weathermen working third rate stations in the UP laugh at their accuracy. I am convinced that if we ever go the way of the dinosauers and get obliterated by a rouge comet or something they wont notice the damn thing until about 15 minutes to impact.

BTW that's one amazing recall on your part to be able to reference the 2006 "HeyJennySlater" post. And yes - our leader was learning his craft even then now wasnt he?

I just noticed something in that clip. How in the hell does GRIII NOT swat that ball right back down his throat? It's like he pulls back as it gently floats over his head.
I wonder why.

Man if only i could remember where I'd seen this concept before....
Oh that's right. On the front freaking page of MgoBlog by BiSB and it actually WAS funny as hell. Note to author: If you're going to plagiarize someone's work at least try and keep the funny parts in place.

I will freely admit I know very little about soccer (other than I really enjoy watching the World Cup) but I'm going to go way out on a limb and predict that any result short of winning the whole damn thing will result in people saying "if Landon Donovan was on the team this wouldnt have happened".
Judging from the media coverage it sure seems like Michael Jordan was left off the Dream Team #1.

Not sure about the "perenially overrated" comment. From 1970-1980 (coincidently when I was 11-21) we went 116-18. Your ten year stretch was fantastic and had National Championship but the overall was 103-27 so I still like my era better.
But compared to today we're arguing about lobster vs filet while a plate of dog food is on the table.

Might I suggest it's time for Sticky #4? While the volume of comments has slowed down signficantly since ther restoration of the points system it's still almost a year old and 900 comments long and very cumbersome to navigate.
Just a thought.

Man I HATE us being "under the radar". I liked it a lot better back in the day when we were the the biggest motherfucking blip on the radar and everybody was gunning for us cause we were perenially a top 5 team or better. I liked going into the season with a loaded cupboard of talent knowing that unless we played way under our ability or had a series of crazy bad breaks we would crush everything in our path on our way to our season-ending showdown with OSU and a date in the Rose Bowl about every other year.
And I liked SI Covers that looked like this. A LOT....

Thanks guys. Perhaps some additonal explanation to the non-snark portion of the excercise might be helpful for thick-headed readers such as me. It's clear you guys put a LOT of work into it but because I dont understand what you're trying to accomplish I dont bother reading it and (sick as this admission might be) I do read virtually everything else you guys post.
One man's opinion and I'm fully aware that free consulting advice is worth every penny you pay for it.

If history is any indication this bowl projection would have us at about 7.5 wins as that's the average of the teams that have played in the bowl it's first four years. So 7-5 or 8-4 would definitely be "in play" according to this writer.
FWIW I dont see Hoke going anywhere at 8-4 unless it's a season ending series of beat-downs a-la RichRod in 2010. 7-5 will make things iffy unless one of the wins is against MSU or OSU IMO ub which case I think Brady will get a fifth year.
