When Michigan’s band traveled to the Cowboys Classic in Dallas last season for the Wolverines’ game with Alabama, it cost the university an estimated $400,000. The decision to send the band came after heavy criticism when it was announced they would not make the trip. 

I'm just counting my blessing that the players and coaching staff still get to go to the away games.  When somebody figures out exactly how much money we'd save by keeping them home we might be in trouble.

And they wanted to draft Denard but what?  They forgot to do so for the first four rounds and it only dawned on them after the first 134 players had been taken that he was still available?

I'm guessing these "things" are being driven by a bunch of guys my age sitting in a room trying to do something them college kids will think is neat-o.

Sadly for me as great as his career was, the memory that remains burned into my brain when the name Jim Smith is mentioned is not a good one.   Ranked #1 in the country where they had been for the past 8 weeks, Michigan got into a dogfight at Purdue and trailed 16-14 with time running out when Smith got behind the secondary and Ricky Leach dropped a pass right on the money that sadly Smith dropped.   Later in the game we missed (allegedly) a game winning field goal that at least Bob Ufer thought was good and Michigan suffered their first defeat of the season.

Here's another difference. In the Spartan Bob game we 100% would've won had the correct calls been made and the officiating wasnt "questionable" it was out and out wrong.  While the 2006 OSU game was absolutely bigger in scope, the Crable call - even if it's not made - didn't 100% lead to our winning.  The way that game went we might've scored and they probably would've scored right back.  Or we might not have scored at all.  There is no way to know what would've happened in those final three minutes and like you accurately said.  While it was a bad call in Michigan's eyes it wasnt like it was such a terrible call that the term "Spartan Bob" became known nation-wide as slang for insider cheating and the freaking NCAA CHANGED THE RULES on who was allowed to manage the clock during home games.  I'd say a rule change forbidding schools from using locals instead of officials to run the scoreboard is a pretty big damn deal - Crable's hit didnt cause any consternation anywhere outside of Ann Arbor.

I keep holding out for ACTUAL throwbacks cause I think we've got some pretty good ones we could legitimately bust out of the wardrobe closet.  In the early 70's we went all white with the away uni's for a couple of years.  I think dressed up with some additional yellow side piping these would look pretty cool AND what satisfy both the tradionalists and the kids wanting something "new".

As I've said in about 50 other threads...any video posted here with the "this is the funniest thing you've ever seen" or other such hyperbole attached to it will not only not be funny....it will SUCK.  And Liquid Dream is no exception.

Yes I did.  A good friend of mine was George Lilja who was an All-American under Bo and ended up here in Northern Ohio when his pro career ended.  George asked me if wanted to help out (which I obviously did) so we went up to AA with a LOT of ex-players who had settled in or were from this area and met with Chmiel.  We all got lists of players to watch but more than anything our job was to "vet" the players character by getting to know his friends and the type of people he hung out with.  TRUST ME - attend a high school game and tell a few people that you're there recruiting for Michigan and you'll get a lot of attention fast.  We would find out who the players buddies were, sit with them, and then just listen to the conversation during the game.  It was amazing how much you could learn about who was a studier, had a job, liked to smoke pot, you name it by just listening to the friends talk.  We also watched games obviously but in our capacity as unoffical recruiters we were signficantly limited in the amount of personal contact we could make.  When Bob left for ND in 94 that pretty much ended my recruiting career.

No Bob is no longer affiliated with ND or Michigan and is on the speaking/consulting circut now.  Ironically he was very good friends with my sister (next door neighbors actually) during his time in Ann Arbor and is one hell of a nice guy and fantastic recruiter.  My sister keeps in touch with him or at least she used to but I havent heard anything lately.

It was a lot of fun.

How ironic. My company produces a nerve stimulator/locator that surgeons use intra-operatively to both locate nerves and do threshold testing.  Today at lunch I'm eating my lunch while watching videos of procedures for possible posting on our website that were exponentially more graphic than that picture and featured lots of live footage of open wounds.  As I'm sitting there eating my leftover no fat spinich pie it dawns on me that a couple of years ago I would've puked instantly seeing what I was watching and now it's no big deal at all.

I started to get excited then I realized that when they kick-off the game in 2020 I will be 61 years young.  Took a bit of the luster off the news for me anyways.

I think we have one home game cause the B1G knows we dont bitch about such things so they capitulate to the schools that do.  It's like that, IMO, for a lot of stuff where we seemingly get the short end of the stick compared to other B1G schools.  I wish our Athletic Department sometimes didn't "play nice" for the greater good of the conference and instead said HELL NO - we are playing at home and you're going to put another luminary school on the road instead.

Again I'll set the over/under Wonderlic score line at 12.   I mean you have to be seriously dumb to do the things he's done over the past two years and literally toss away tens of millions of dollars in the process.  

And people wonder why the NFL gives everybody a standardized intellegence test.  The sad thing is they then ignore the results and wonder why they have trouble with players down the road.  

Not far from where I live either.  I was travelling back to Ohio from New Hampshire yesterday when the story broke and I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I remember vividly the searches, the candlelight vigils and sadly, Amanda's mom passing away of a broken heart before her daughter was found.

It sure makes you wonder how a person could do something like this to other people for 10 years while keeping all outside appearances "normal".  I cant imagine being able to sleep at night much less function in society.  And now they say his brothers were involved somehow? It boggles the mind.

As a kid growing up I would usually go to one or two games a year from 1967 - 1974 when my brother and sister were in undergrad and then dental school.

As a student from 1978 - 1981 I went to all home games EXCEPT the damn Indiana game made famous by Anthony Carter (went to CMU for the weekend). And yes, we got there on time.

I lived on the west coast after graduation until 1987.  Then I came home and got seasons tickets so I've been to almost every home game between 1987 and today.  Usually one road game a year and I've been to the 1986, 1997 & 2004 Rose Bowls, the 2012 Sugar Bowl and the 2013 Outback Bowl.  

I think the exact number is a shitload.

You can do anything you want.  My point is a downvote, absent of anything else, is the electronic equivilent of yelling "you suck" to someone and I cannot possibly see how or why that would apply here.  And again, IMO, in real life if the Mathlete or anyone else showed someone the results of a lot of work they did pro-bono I simply dont believe anyone but a complete asshole would look at it and say "you suck" and leave.

But hey, maybe I'm in the minority here being old.  I just fail to see the value in being mean to other people with little or no purpose behind it other than being mean.  You obviously see it differently.

If this means that Gary Danielson can show the SEC less love then I'm all for it.

Having watched many a Wings team through the years just crush it in the regular season only to watch them flame out in round 1 I would dearly love it if the skate was on the other foot for a change and the Wings won.

The only thing that would make it sweeter would be if we got outshot something like 46 to 17 every game and we won through a combination of Howard absolutely standing on his head for the entire series and a bunch of fluke, lucky, you'll never see that again type goals for the good guys.

Cause Lord knows I've watched enough of that going against us over the past 21 seasons.

Before anybody rushes out and buys NFL Sunday Ticket, does anybody know the odds of 5th round picks sticking with a team?  It would seem to be pretty low to me but my internet seems to be broken and I cant find it anywhere.

FWIW according to multiple Cleveland based media outlets the Browns have zero interest In Ryan Mallet.  They know that the Pats want a 2nd rounder this year (which we dont have) or a 1st rounder next year (which he's not worth) so that deal aint happening.

That's true.  I got the bulk of my points during the dark days of RR when several of my comments got lots of responses.  But that system worked both ways - unpopular comments got cranked down one point too.

Can you imagine the humiliation that poor guy went through last year?  I mean he goes from an All-Star closer one minute to a punch line the next.  That could not have been easy to deal with.  Any yet....here he is again with the same team in front of the same fans and getting the job done at least once.

I give him major kudos for guts, determination and courage.  Tonight he had to have been nervous as Hell knowing what a bad outing would mean.  And the dude did it!  

I'm still baffled by the artist's selection of Denard's facial expression.  Why on earth you would take a man whose iconic smile is literally the first thing most people visualize when they think of him and give him an expression that looks like he's watching somebody steal his car is beyond me.

I'm struggling with your premis that football has been bad lately so we current students are less compelled to go to games.  And that people from the Mesozoic era like me went to games cause we had Bo posters growing up.

Did you guys happen to notice that we HAVENT LOST A GAME AT HOME IN TWO FREAKING YEARS?????  I know in my old age my memory is somewhat flawed but I sure dont remember that happened during my stay in Ann Arbor.

And we went to all the games and we got there on time.

I'm starting my own petition.  It states that any student who buys tickets and fails to use said tickets or show up for games before kick-off for three consecutive games will LOSE said tickets for remainder of season and all rights to buy future tickets.   Forfieted tickets will be distributed to famillies of childern at Mott free of charge.

While thrilled that he's on the cover I must confess I'm a bit dissapointed in the artist's rendering of Denard.  I saw a lot of different facial expressions from #16 over the past four years (mostly smiling) but pensive, angry Denard was NOT one of them I remember seeing too often.

First and foremost that's a LOT of work you did there.  Nice job!

But I must question two things:

1. You think Geno Smith is dropping out of the first round?  He won't last past the first 10 picks IMO.

2. You've got Tyler Eifert WAY too low.  That dude is a stud and Tight Ends are the flavor of the month in the NFL.  I dont see him lasting past pick 15....20 tops.

And FWIW I really hope you're right on my Browns.  I would love to see that pairing happen!

Individually nothing.  Obviously you weren't part of the problem but speaking as someone who has attended almost all home games from 1978 on I can tell you that the empty seats in the student section is a VERY new occurance.  And it's not like the academic standards at Michigan has changed a lot in the past 35 years so if students could somehow manage to attend classes AND hook up with girls AND party AND attend the games why couldnt this group?  So the accountability was spread over an entire student body and you were collateral damage to the sollution.

If your fellow students had followed your lead and headed the warnings from the athletic department over the past year or so you'd be enjoying seats on the 40 yard line like I did.  And I'm sorry you arent given your attendance and support.

But if you're upset over the change look in the classroom and the other students if you want to see the problem.  Be mad at them.

At the Outback Bowl this year we went deep sea fishing and happened to get seated next to Alex Bars, his dad and his older brother Brad.  Besides being like the nicest family ever, Alex said his top two choices were Michigan and Georgia and he didn't have a clear favorite at the time.  

Given that his dad played for Notre Dame, his oldest brother plays for Penn State and Blake is with us, it doesnt seem like the family plays "favorites" when it comes to school selection.

Although he was dismissed for his racist comments the BEST football announcing team was not Madden and Summerall.  It was Brookshier and Summerall!

If you are old enough to remember or care to YouTube - watch a few "This week in the NFL" and check out the narration & music.  This was back in the day when you got one, maybe two games a week and highlights from other games were only available via these types of montages.

Which brings me to another food question.  Are coney places better for coney's or breakfast? I would argue that they actually do better serving breakfast than coney's in many cases.

Seeing that it's lunctime and we're talking food I have a question for the board.  Why is it that in the Detroit metro area you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a coney stand (I think it's a zoning law in MIchigan that ALL strip malls have at least one) but down here in Cleveland there are literally none.  I mean none.

I got a jones for a coney dog the other day and my options were Sonic and Skyline Chili which is sort of like choosing between something horrible and something terrible IMO.  I'm telling you someday one the Greek community up north is going to figure out that a mere three hour drive south they can own the market and not have to compete with everyone in their family for business and that guy is going to be worth millions!

I'm happy for Burke and all that (if he should actually go #1) but I've never quite understood the arguement that it's somehow "good for the program" to lose it's best players to the NBA before they are required to leave.

I know I'm old but isnt it....i dunno...kinda BETTER for the program when good players stay and play for the program?  

Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned.  FWIW my mom used the same arguement to try and get me to eat parsnips.  I hate parsnips and no, they are not good for me either.

Funny you should say that.  The first time I met him was leaving a high school academic All-American banquet here in Cleveland in 2000 cause Lloyd was the keynote speaker and he hadnt yet started at OSU (had gotten the job but it was in the springtime).

We ran into each other in the lobby sneaking out early during a video (he had his late mother to take home to Bratenhal and I had my 15 year old son) and both of them had to go to the bathroom so Tressel and I were standing there alone in this giant lobby (place called Landerhaven) - him in his OSU polo and me in my M polo.  I shook his hand, said congrats on getting the OSU job and told him I hoped he went 12-1 every year.  He said "thanks and I'll take the 12-1 but I dont think I want to lose the one game YOU want me to lose".  Then he laughed and we spent about 20 minutes talking about living in hotels on the road, best resturants in Orlando, rental cars and everything BUT football.  He was increadibly charming, friendly and engaging and way nicer than he needed to be to a M guy like me.

Yes he is a guy and is happily married.  I had the good pleasure of spending an afternoon with him and his lovely wife last year New Year's before the Sugar Bowl watching football games, eating food that was very bad for us and drinking beer!

Not to thread-jack my own post but my company sells an intra-operative nerve stimulator/locator that is used by surgeons when assessing & repairing nerve damage.  And we just got approved by University of Michigan for trial use last week and literally in the past five minutes they just placed their first order!!!!!

Well I'm anything but an AVERAGE MGoblogger Eric so I know that wasnt directed at me.  Seriously though I 100% agree about Tressel.  As I said in the OP, I've met him twice and found him to be very charming and friendly - even to a MIchigan guy like me.

I was actually talking to him more about if he felt he got a fair shake from OSU or if he thought he was made a fall guy for others.  

There was some.  Not a lot but I do agree with Gordie that people taking shots at Kansas fans reactions were a bit silly and they made me uncomforable as well.

Oh man thanks for the heads up.  We had the coach-burning all planned (sent out e-vites, bought some beers, ordered pizzas....you know the usual) and then I read this so we're changing our plans for sure.

God would that have been AWKWARD.

Get ready for tomorrow.  And generally just enjoy today and all the fun the last three weeks have been watching this team.  As somebody who actually remembers the 1976 game believe it or not, I had missed a deep tourny run and the building suspense and excitement of each subsequent game.  

That's the wonderful thing about this tourny IMO.  Each game brings higher stakes and tougher opponents so each win (if you get them) is just a bit sweeter than the one before.  And the acticipation for the next game goes up proportionally as well.

So here we are the precipice.  Roughly 34 hours away from jumping........it's been one hellofa fun ride and I'm going to enjoy today and tomorrow a LOT thanks to my team!

The best thing about the phone ap is that caved comments live on and dont go away.  So once I noticed that Darth Wolverine was being his typical a-hole self I immediately went to my phone so I could see what he said.

I screamed "HE DID IT....HE DID IT....HE DID IT" as loud as I could at my television while pointing at and jumping up and down.  Then I high-fived my wife and my very confused (and probably a bit frightened) 8 year old.  The cats all took off and went downstairs.

Now I'm not one to take credit for the win or anything here but lets face it.  Pretty damn obvious by the way they played in OT that the team could feel my positive emotional presence  here in Northern Ohioi and fed off it to secure the win.

Um....not to be a nitpicker but the game against Illinois didnt go into OT, much less double OT.  Hellofa game and thank you Sean Higgins for cleaning up the Mills/Kobe assist but in ended in regulation.

FWIW my brother was at the game and said the Kansas fans were very cool and fun to hang with both before and AFTER the game.  Respectful, knowledgeable and very into basketball - sort of like how we'd like others to think about us if you think about it.

Sorry but I get no enjoyment making fun of another fan's pain. Especially a fan of a team I hold no ill-will towards and generally admire. And besides...... I know just how he feels given how many of those shots we've been on the recieving end of recently.

The guy I'm facinated by is the fat Kansas guy next to the dead lady.  His expressions and arm movements during and immediately after the shot are priceless.

Unless you're honestly wondering.  In that case I'd suggest starting your search in Sweden.

These are great finds but NOTHING in my mind will ever beat the day somebody posted "Does anybody remember that one play about 15 years ago when one of our guys, I think it was a Tight End or something, blocked like three guys on one play and we scored a touchdown?"  

And based on that precise description of the play in question the Wolverine Historian if memory serves not only remembered the play, he posted the freaking CLIP within less than five minutes of the thread hitting the board.  Since that day I have never underestimated the ability of people around here to find and post just about anything once it's been requested.

Agree last week was a small sample size but it did reinforce for me anyways what I've witnessed over my lifetime.  I lived in Okemos for about two years in the late 80's and have lived in the Cleveland area ever since so I've been exposed to both fan bases "up close and personal" for the  better part of the last 25 years or so.  

It was been my life experience that if given a choice, the typical MSU fan would rather see both MSU and Michigan lose a game as they get more enjoyment out of our defeat than they do their own victories.  OSU fans, on the other hand, I think if given the same choice, would select seeing both teams win as they get more enjoyment out of watching the Buckeyes win than they do us losing.
