7 years 6 weeks ago | I just looked at the actual |
I just looked at the actual rankings and I made a mistake... didn't think UCLA would be above us - wow! UCLA shouldn't be that high. |
7 years 6 weeks ago | I know what you mean, but... |
like I said above, you can pretty much swap UNC, UVA, Michigan and Berkeley on any given year. They're all pretty equal. Having said that, Michigan moves to #1 overall when you factor in intangibles! |
7 years 6 weeks ago | And I think you can call UVA, |
And I think you can call UVA, Berkeley, UNC, and Michigan and tie... |
7 years 6 weeks ago | I got that sense too. A |
I got that sense too. A little disapointing that they seem to see themselves as sort of separate from Michigan, but I suppose they are a little bitter about the self-imposed sanctions. The documentary makes it seem like they, C-Web, or Ed Martin didn't do anything wrong and MSC and Bill Martin overreacted. I wouldn't agree, but I can see why they'ld be a little bitter. |
7 years 6 weeks ago | 4 of the Fab 5 produced the documentary... |
So, as good as the documentary was it was pretty biased. They completely blew over what a big deal the Ed Martin Scandal was. The University had to come down hard on themselves because the NCAA would have. That meant forfeited games and taking down banners. |
7 years 12 weeks ago | Francesa is popular, but I |
Francesa is popular, but I (and most people I talk to) regularly disagree with him. He's become a blowhard with all the "Miked Up" and YES shows he's got going. I never liked Chris Russo much either - way too much time talking about the Giants (SF...) Though, any positive press for Michigan is something we need now so I'll take it. |

Or the staff didn't adapt to Denard which is also bad. |
7 years 14 weeks ago | Funding doesn't really matter... |
I don't know the numbers for UofM, but as a grad student at UVA I recall hearing that the state of Virginia contributed about 4% of the university's budget. Pretty sure UofM will always be public regardless of how little they fund. Most business schools are privately funded - even Darden and I think Haas, not sure about Ross. So, it's all a little sensational and doesn't really matter in the end. |
7 years 14 weeks ago | There's still hope right? |
There's still hope right? I'll hold out hope - even for a WLing which you'll get in off of! Did you apply to Darden? |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Manhattan actually teaches |
Manhattan actually teaches you the material. Not going to lie, it's a lot of work. But it pays off. The Mahanttan books will explain the principles and give you a few short questions then send you to the official books to practice what you've learned. I went from a 580 on my diagnostic to a 750 on the real thing (4 months hard work), so I HIGHLY recommend going with Manhattan books. Also, I did it all on my own - no classes or self study. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | you are using Manhattan GMAT |
you are using Manhattan GMAT right? Because if you're not, put that book down. It's a waste of time... I'm not kidding. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | It's my "top" choice... |
but my wife (also alum) is just worried about her job. I'm waiting to hear back from some Big City schools before I commit because there's a higher probability of her transferring to say SF than Detroit. Of course, NYC means we move but she keeps the same job. But I really want to go to Ross :-) |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Yeah! |
Congratulations! I've got to wait to hear back from some other schools, but heading back to A2 is in the cards. Also, I absolutely love your entertaining Open Commit Threads! |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Good News! |
Just recently got my call. Can't wait to hear the good news from you guys! |
7 years 15 weeks ago | So glad I no longer work in a |
So glad I no longer work in a SCIF. Can't imagine the added stress you must be feeling without the phone at your fingertips. Any chance you're an Anapolis grad? Most MBAs I know went to the USMA or USNA. Suppose it's because of my industry, but I know B-Schools love those guys. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | per some B-School blogs, |
per some B-School blogs, sounds like internationals and SuperSaturday invitees have been recieving calls since yesterday. Been quiet so far today. I'd much prefer if they called after the decisions were posted. This anxiety is taking years off my life and sucking all productivity. p.s. as a UM and UVA alum... you have the best avatar ever. The V-sabre is an awesome logo, but with the M... simply amazing. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Also want to know... |
If Zone Left or anyone has heard. I'm staring at my phone like I did in HS waiting for a girl to return my calls. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | I think I learned it in about |
I think I learned it in about 10 minutes during orientation :-) |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Didn't realize companies paid |
Didn't realize companies paid for full-time MBAs. My employer will shell outa few grand for me to "go" to Phoenix, Strayer, or Capella... Were you able to play up your family life as part of your app? Just curious, because I really feel us married folk, and especially guys like you with kids, are a lot more serious about our education and have more to gain from B-School. Anyway, good luck! Sounds like the ad-comm has started making calls to international students this morning. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | I heard that... |
I spoke with a student when I interviewed who was telling me how all the MBA guys like to Rick's. I asked her what happened that Rick's is no longer the greek scene bar. She shot me a puzzled look and goes "That's why they go." I felt dirty after hearing that :-p I'm amazed people have time to go nuts like this in B-School. Most people I know have said they've done nothing but work and try and find a job. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | B-School may have more dudes |
B-School may have more dudes than Law School - but that's nothing compared to my electrical engineering experience! Oh right, I'm married now and thid doesn't factor into my decision... |
7 years 15 weeks ago | I interviewed with an Ad-Com |
I interviewed with an Ad-Com member and while she wasn't too rough the interview just went differently than I expected. I've never had a 25 minute intereview before. The pace of the interview was so quick I feel I left a lot in reserve for questions I expected but wasn't actually asked. She also focused a lot on my long term goals - which are significantly more hazy than the short term. Just felt different than job interviews I've been on- I've also never wanted a "job" so badly. But, I've met students who made significant blunders in their interviews and were still admitted. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | UM Undergrad and UVA grad... |
UM Undergrad and UVA grad... anxiously awaiting news from Ross. I think my application is fine, but I'm freaked out about the interview. Wasn't bad but was super nervous (enthusiasm may have been masked) and just wasn't myself. Hoping that I didn't do poorly or the interview isn't enough to weigh down my high gmat and terrific essays. Best of luck to you and everyone else awaiting a call. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | It's a great idea! I may not |
It's a great idea! I may not choose to sign the letter of intent too soon, but assuming I have multiple options, I'm going to make a video of me choosing between a bunch of hats on a table and post it on YouTube! Best of luck to you! I'm hoping it works out for me, but I'm just so nervous about my interview. I didn't do poorly, but it was certainly the fastest 30 (really 25) minutes I've spent interviewing. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | I'm pretty sure I'm going to |
I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to walk on. I don't think the real recruits have to pay $200 for the application fee and spend close to $1k to fly to Ann Arbor for an interview. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm not getting a full-scholarship :-/ |
7 years 16 weeks ago | Wait for B-School? I didn't |
Wait for B-School? I didn't get an email. Shoot, don't reply. I don't want to know... I don't need the stress for the next week. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | HA! I hear back from Ross |
HA! I hear back from Ross next week. And as bad as I want to go there I'm dreading the next two years of Saturdays. I just submitted my Duke-Fuqua application this afternoon and thought it was too ironic that the Duke is at the top of Men's Basketball again... Oh, and they have a Coack K Center for Leadership. Why do we not have a similar research center named after Bo? Pretty sure Coach K didn't have to pay to plaster his name all over that school. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | I could just be looking for |
I could just be looking for the pony in a pile of crap, but maybe this means there won't be mass transfers? Of course, they could vave transferred with or without RR. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | You are probably right and |
You are probably right and this is just a viceral reaction. And reading comments from this blog doesn't help. :-) But watching the press conference, his body language didn't give me the sense he was confident in what was coming. |
7 years 16 weeks ago | Firing RR after the Gator |
Firing RR after the Gator Bowl is probably the right thing to do. But... waiting to evaluate the program after the season was a bad move. He might be the only boss to ever to go into an annual performace review blind. It's poor leadership to not have some form of a plan for every situation. I didn't think there would have been anything wrong with saying "RR is our coach" in Nov., only to fire him in January. I don't believe DB has an MBA. Ross is right there for him! |
7 years 16 weeks ago | I was with a fellow alum for |
I was with a fellow alum for a few days before and after New Years. Before the bowl game we talked about how although we were dissapointed with the way the team played in several key games, we thought RR deserved another year. We didn't like the way DB was handling the situation - didn't think it was fair to leave RR dangling because he might have wanted JH more. Then we got absolutely blown out in the Gator Bowl. I can't say I really hate that RR needs to go at this point. Even if we don't land JH, we have to make a change. RR might be a great coach, but it's not working here, now. Injuries and all that aside, there is no reason the defense should be THAT bad. Every offense in the country looks like they can do whatever they want on any play. That's coaching. It's a poor scheme, rushing only 3 and not getting any pressure on the QB, and poor player development. Offensively, the play calling left our head spinning. For all the talk about the "spread", we don't look like Oregon with guys flying all over and really spreading the field. |
7 years 20 weeks ago | I meant 50 total selectees |
I meant 50 total selectees across the Big 10... first team, second team, specials teams like they select the All-American teams. I didn't expect to have 50 UM players on the list, since that would be an insane percentage of the team. |
7 years 20 weeks ago | Ouch |
I figured there would be about 50... 2 full offensive and defensive teams plus some special teams. Guess we're not making the progress in the class room I was expecting and that's not good for the coach. |
7 years 20 weeks ago | Congratulations to those who |
Congratulations to those who made it. Not sure how the Academic All Big Ten Team works, but 8 guys sounds like a lot. I think Rich Rod has done a good job stressing academics with this team, and I know it's one of the criteria DB is using to evaluate the coach. |
7 years 28 weeks ago | Yeah, you learn about the |
Yeah, you learn about the rivalries the day you step on campus. I grew up in NJ, hating C-Webb and the Fab Five and rooting for Catholic schools like Notre Dame. I applied to UM based on academics, got accepted, and went all in for Michigan. I learned to hate ND and tOSU pretty quickly. |
