"Northwestern fans can be both heartened and disheartened by the loss to Minnesota just like how nineteenth-century resurrectionists were heartened when they pried a heart from a freshly-buried corpse and then disheartened it when they sold it to a disreputable anatomist."

Trust me, if they get two in, the other conferences will revolt. Especially if ND gets in. That would leave only one Power 5 conference outside the SEC represented in the CoFoPo. All hell would break loose.
I actually hope that happens. We don't have a dog in the hunt, so I'll just sit back and eat popcorn and watch the whole thing implode.
The faster it happens the better. The cure for too many SEC teams in the playoff is too many SEC teams in the playoff. It will only happen once, then they'll change the whole system.
They already did the last time it happened.
|5 hours 36 min ago||I could even live with||
I could even live with conference champions not being guaranteed to get in if they are more than, say, 2 wins behind a viable competitor.
I'm OK with a 3 loss Big Ten team not getting in over a 1 loss Alabama for example.
So if a conference is really bad, I'm OK if they are left out. Also, no conference should be allowed more than two. Your conference is well represented enough with 25% of the teams in the playoff.

It was blatant, just asking to be called. And so it was.
Here's another one that's blatant, just asking to be called, that's going to burn some team big someday: Assisting the runner. Everybody does it now, they don't even try to pretend.
If ND wants to talk about getting hosed, they can legitimately talk about the "Bush Push" against USC. That was blatant and should have been called.
But last night's call was correct both technically and in the spirit of the rules. It gave an unfair advantage. Two recievers out of three just flat out bulldozed their defenders.

Seriously. If it's just following somebody around to neg everything they post, that's middle-school childish.
If they're that bad, then don't worry, they'll say something legitimately neg worthy soon enough. In the meantime, hold your fire man.
|6 hours 57 min ago||They are very easy to keep||
They are very easy to keep out if it is them versus any of the following:
- The SEC champ. No matter who.
- A 1 loss Alabama team.
- An undefeated FSU.
- A 1 loss ND
- A 1 loss Oregon
In fact, they are only in if it is between them and another team that has 2 losses.

Our loss was self-inflicted by the coaching staff that did not let Denard keep being Denard.

Miss you Denard. XOXOXO.

Wow, how good is Denard?
He got me to watch Jacksonville Jaguars highlights. On purpose.
|7 hours 40 min ago||Yes Denard scored a touchdown||
Yes Denard scored a touchdown on every single play according to my memory.
And they were all worth 10 points.

Yes, that's un-American. Or at least un-Michigan.

I had my way with a little Sparty intern once. Really sweet girl.
Win or lose, I always get to think about that on Sparty week.
Don't bother giving me a Pos bang. I already had it.
|11 hours 56 min ago||Depends on how we do it.If||
Depends on how we do it.
If we do it because Conner Cook gets hurt or because streaky shooter Devin Gardner has one of his freakout games that he can't replicate the rest of the year, then no.
If we do it becuase we are sound in all three phases of the game and sustain it for the rest of the season, then yes.
But some serious shit would have to go down in the mere span of two weeks for that to happen.

Thank you for using upvotes and downvotes in a sensible manner.
People have gotten into the habit of just neg-ing everything they don't agree with, or pos-ing that what reinforces their existing opinion, rather that making their own coherent arguments.
Everybody is not supposed to agree and always say the same thing in an echo chamber.

They can also phase some things in over time, instead of trying to do it all at once just so that Brandon can tell his AD buddies "mine's bigger than your's".
|12 hours 30 min ago||One more year of not winning||
One more year of not winning the NC will do it.
The media is all about the last 5 minutes. We think they are biased because they inherently love the SEC. But what they really love is an easy new narrative that they can provide "insight" into for the great unwashed masses.
They will eat up a storyline of: "Has the SEC fallen from its pearch on top of college football? Discuss."

It is. Hello: ESPN.
But it will sort itself out. They all have to play each other.
|12 hours 40 min ago||If Notre Dame and Oregon both||
If Notre Dame and Oregon both win out, Oregon will likely be the team to get in, if they beat common opponent Stanford convincingly.
|12 hours 43 min ago||There's a really really good||
There's a really really good chance that all three of our rivals get chumped at the end of the season: The OSU/MSU loser does not even make the Big Ten championship game, and the OSU/MSU winner and Notre Dame do not make the playoff, even with only one loss.
I'm not big on resorting to taking your joy from other teams' losses, but we suck anyway and that's not going to change. So might as well have some fun with the chaos.
Here's the chaos I'm rooting for:
- Ole Miss wins the SEC and is in. Because SEC champ.
- Alabama rampages through the rest of its schedule and is in. Because Alabama.
- FSU wins out and is in. Because of undefeated and last year.
- Oregon finishes strong and wins the Pac 12 while Notre Dame's "big win" Stanford continues to tank. Because common opponent.
That leaves one-loss Notre Dame and OSU/MSU outside looking in, and wailing to high heaven. LOL.

I'm in favor of eight teams and always have been. But no more than that.
Eight gets in Power 5 champs and leaves room for 3 at-larges, one of which should be reserved for a non power 5 team. No conference should get more than two.
This is going to eventually happen anyway because of politics and money.
I am one of the people that worships at the alter of CFB being so unique because every games matters. I don't think eight changes that.
The strawman argument against eight is that it becomes sixteen. If you want to argue against sixteen, I'm right there with you with torches and pitchforks. But eight stands on its own merits.
|15 hours 51 min ago||When you want to spend money||
When you want to spend a lot of money but you have to take it because you can't make it, there will always be limits.
|16 hours 39 sec ago||Yes. We love non-revenue||
Yes. We love non-revenue sports.
I take specail pride in the fact that Michigan is good at everything . . . in athletics and academics and the overall college experience. That to me is what the "Michigan Difference" actually means.
We will have to balance some things going forward. The assumption of an endless stream of money is no longer proving to be true. They are seeing this on the academic side as well.
As always, when money gets tight (or in our case not as all-night-orgy loose), things get political and fights break out pitting one group against another. I hope we don't go down this road as we adjust to a reality that is not really all that bad. This is still Michigan.
|16 hours 11 min ago||Can you imagine someone from||
Can you imagine someone from overseas reading this post? They would not even understand what we're arguing about.
|16 hours 20 min ago||I don't think we are||
I don't think we are attacking the non-revenue sports. We are attacking those sports being run as country clubs.
We can't afford it at the current level. It has to be dialed back a little bit.
Nobody is saying that we can't have those sports, or even that those sports can't have nice facilities. But we can't afford for them to be indistinguishable from country clubs in the Hamptons.
As a high school wrestler, my "locker" was a nail on a long 2x4. But I wrestled for the love of the sport not the tangential stuff. Yes, I would have appreciated some nicer facilities (or any at all), but it didn't define the sport for me.
|16 hours 35 min ago||This hits the nail on the||
This hits the nail on the head.
The mode of operation has been that the sky is the limit on revenue, so the emphasis has been on finding ways to spend money. Short-sighted and foolhardy, but that's the way it's been.
Well no more. The theory of inelastic demand for Michigan sports has been empirically invalidated. If they weren't smart enough to anticipate that there would be limits, the limits have now made themselves known in no uncertain terms.
The new mode of operation has to be the same as it is for the rest of the world . . . what is my budget and how can I prioritize to be able to live within that budget?
There are going to have to be some things that are delayed, dialed back, or discontinued. Nobody is going to get everything they want.
|16 hours 49 min ago||And I think all Engineering||
And I think all Engineering majors with a 4.0 avereage should be given a full scholarship for achieving such success.
There are a lot of things that would be nice to have. But when your plan is to pay for them with someone else's money, there are limits.
|17 hours 12 min ago||I feel sad for those two||
I feel sad for those two guys. They will have left Michigan just in time to see us revert back to an offense that could take proper advantage of their skills when a new coach comes in.

Plus he's a whack job. Which is overlooked as long as he's winning.
But if you think Hoke's quaint mannerisms get on your nerves after a loss, wait until you get a load of the bizzare Les show after a loss.

Yet you could still call it a Pro style offense. It was not a calssic "spread" offense, ala Oregon or Clemson.

I don't necessarily equate Prostyle with Manball. Manball is a philosophy that tries to rely on ball control and time of possesion, then punt and play defense and hope to win games 14-10. The Manball world has been passed by.
