Crappy laptop microphone + downloading Audacity for the first time only 48 hours ago = some audio hiccups. We're still figuring it out; it should sound better next time. |
| 3 years 1 week ago | "So by your logic, if RR |
"So by your logic, if RR received no loyalty from Trent, he owes him none in return." Absolutely. But that doesn't mean that he shouldn't have anyway. It's not unreasonable to expect that a 50-something year old man to take the high road such a situation, particularly when it would seem to be in his own self-interest do so. (Wouldn't it be better for Rodriguez's recruiting/player retention/program aura/etc. to have his former players drafted highly?) "Second failure of loyalty on the part of Trent. He put his agenda against RR above beyond that of the program." Again, true. But first, he's, what, 23? And second, he believes--apparently reasonably believes--that Rodriguez, his former coach, actively harmed his draft position, earning potential, and chances for NFL success. In that situation, I'd be pretty pissed too. |
| 3 years 1 week ago | Fair disclosure: I'm an MSU |
Fair disclosure: I'm an MSU grad and blogger--albeit one who sees Rodriguez as less pointy-teeth-guy and more as a sympathetic figure caught in a maelstrom--so I don't claim that my views on Michigan football are completely without jaundice. With that out of the way: if Trent honestly believes that Rodriguez said those things, you're essentially asking him to be loyal to the program when the program (in the form of Rodriguez) has not been loyal to him, at all. To me, loyalty would have been Rodriguez standing up for his former player by not "bad-mouthing" Trent (whatever that actually meant) even if he had ample justification to do so--as seems to be the case. So here, there's a former player speaking out and joining the chorus of anti-Rodriguez voices, probably in the hopes that, yes, there will be a change at the top. I'd imagine that Trent knows replacing Rodriguez at the end of this season would leave Michigan in poor short-term shape. Given what he believes happened (and as Brian concedes, probably did happen), I bet Trent thinks the post-apocalyptic period would probably be worth it. In any event, I think solely blaming Trent here essentially sanctions the idea that in the Rodriguez era, loyalty is a one-way street. I may be naturally skeptical of the Inherent Michigan Values that Wolverine fans always ascribe to the program, but whatever they are, this surely isn't one of them. |

"BONUS: there are five more guys yet to be identified—Rob Parker thinks they're all Kirk Cousins." This here blog is not the place I'd have expected to find the first moment of levity during this sordid mess . . . but nonetheless, thankyousir. |

But, FWIW, De Carolis seems to be doing everything he can to turn that around. Craig Robinson was a fantastic hire. [Insert comment here about hoping this major search is as lol-ish as your last one.] |

Steve: "And when the HC (and ex-OSU DC) puts in the defensive game plan for the first time during his tenure as HC, you know they did something special for Michigan." Completely aside from the rivalry aspect, this was a pretty freaking important game for us (MSU): a loss, and we would have been 1-4 (0-2). That was an unprecedented situation under Dantonio, so I don't think it's any less implausible that he took personal control over the defensive planning in an effort to, you know, save the season. Two other thoughts, briefly: playing well against Michigan and very poorly against Wisconsin doesn't mean that we prepared for Michigan at the expense of Wisconsin. If the defense played like garbage against Illinois, for instance, the week before the Michigan game, I might buy it. But Wisconsin is a good team -- at this point, clearly better than Michigan -- and we played them at Camp Randall (where we've won once since 1993) the week after a semi-heartwrenching loss to Notre Dame. Under any other circumstances, this would have been an understandable performance, though certainly a disappointing one. But because it was the week before Michigan, somehow it's major evidence that we neglected planning for Wisconsin to look ahead to the rivalry game? To me, that proves waaaaay too much. And in any event, at the basest level, the charge is that, for the second year in a row, we prepared too thoroughly to play our biggest rival. And, um, that's all right with me. |

Sunday afternoon. I don't think the news about Forcier had come out yet; at the very least, I hadn't heard about it when we recorded the segment. |

Mitchell and Myles. Neither has contributed much. (Mitchell is a walk-on QB who's mostly notable for being involved in a fight the week before the U-M game last season -- the one involving the hockey player and Glenn Winston. Myles may get a look at WR this season.) Also, apparently both of Austin's parents are MSU grads. I'd love to see him in Green and White; he's a good player. All indications are that he's Ann Arbor-bound. C'est la vie. |

I too am a State grad, and I co-sign this post -- what those guys did is completely indefensible, and I certainly hope that neither of them will ever wear an MSU sweater again. Most importantly, I really hope Kampfer is all right. Watching that video makes me sick to my stomach. |
