So, will the "State of Our Open Threads" this week include the F-bomb that Sherrone Moore just dropped on national TV?

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm right there with you.

Last year we watched the Penn St. game from my Dad's hospital bed after a massive stroke. He passed 3 days later. He was also a veteran. So this day brings some mixed feelings.

RIP.

I don't believe that it is a safety issue.  But the commissioner has stated that it is as a basis for suspending one of the league's coacher.  Petitti has made the bed.  Now he should be made to lie in it (pun intended).

Exactly this. Screwing up a call on the field is bad but it happens. Screwing up a review, overturning a call that is perhaps correct on the field, and certainly not indisputably wrong, when you have time to look at replay and make a considered judgement, is unforgivable.

It is puzzling how many…

It is puzzling how many mistakes that we made, in big ways (pick sixes) and small (false starts). It was uncharacteristic of this team.

Refs will miss some calls…

Refs will miss some calls. That's part of the game.

The infuriating thing about this game was that the review official made the absolutely wrong call twice (Wilson touchdown and targeting). The reason to have a replay is to take take out the instantaneous nature of difficult calls and get them right. I can forgive a ref for making a bad interference call (or non call). But to totally screw up a review in a game with these stakes is unforgivable and should be investigated.

I've lived in Knoxville for over 20 years and raised a family here (still have a few teenagers at home).  I love it here, but it's not for everybody.  I'd be happy to talk with you if you're interested.  Let me know if you'd like to talk and I'll get contact information to you.

I will leave the discussion…

I will leave the discussion of legal considerations to those on the board who have the expertise.  But I agree with MGoStrength on the focus on your daughter.  You may have already done some of these things, but as a father of three teenage daughters, I would do the following:

  1. Tell her clearly that this was not her fault.  (It's a strange thing that children who experience abuse often think that they did something to deserve it).
  2. Let her know that you are really glad that she came to talk to you about it, and that you always want to hear from her.
  3. Reinforce that she is loved, precious, and deserves to be treated with respect.
  4. Ask her how she is feeling about it, and listen for as long as needed.
  5. Tell her that you are going to defend her, whatever that means specifically.
  6. Give her the option to stay home from school for a day or two to process this (and not have to deal with going back into the environment right away).

There are a lot of different permutations depending on your daughter's personality, but there are a few messages that will be important for her to hear.

It's a horrible thing for a young girl to go through, and infuriating for a Dad.  You're in my thoughts.

I have lived in Knoxville…

I have lived in Knoxville for 20 years (HS in Detroit area, 10 years and 3 degrees at UM, then a little time in South Texas before moving to Knoxville).

A lot has already been said, and I agree that it is high quality of life and low cost of living.  I will add that it's very family friendly.  You get four distinct seasons.  Summers are hot and humid but not too long.  You get winter and small amounts of occasional snowfall (which cause everything to shut down), but it is relatively mild.  Spring and Fall are both amazing.  Allergies are horrible, so that's one drawback.  There's not a tremendous amount of high culture (although there are a ton of PhD's, between the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Lab).  But you are within a day's drive of a lot of major cities - 10 hours or less to Atlanta, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, DC, multiple beaches in NC and SC.

The officiating wasn't horrible this game, but every questionable call / no-call went against the good guys (roughing, possible targeting, the weird wide receiver false start, several possible defensive holding / PI).

The small comfort is that the same thing happened to the Buckeyes.  Misery loves company.

I think that it's a position issue, since Livers plays the 4/5, and he won't start ahead of Brazdeikis or Teske.

Yes, other teams are jumping…

Yes, other teams are jumping us in the Kenpom adjusted efficiency margin.

We win in Illinois by 10 points (expected Kenpom margin, our adjusted efficiency doesn't change).

Tennessee wins in Missouri (similar team to Illinois, in Kenpom) by 24.  This is after beating Georgia by 46.  (I'm in Knoxville, so the Vols are the other team that I follow closely).

No surprise that Tennessee passes us up in Kenpom.

Daily Kenpom rankings are like daily stock market valuation.  If one is invested in these rankings, then it's best only to look at them once a month.

We go to the Big Ten championship game, but not to the playoff with two losses.

First week of the year is an…

First week of the year is an important point that can't be stressed enough.

Remember that Bo eventually insisted that Notre Dame NOT be scheduled as the first game after he lost a few with teams that were not prepared (not to mention the difficult in game planning when there's no film).

The percentages are based on…

The percentages are based on ESPN's "Football Power Index" which has Notre Dame ranked #6 (!!) and Michigan ranked #11.

The FPI is described as:

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.

So, some of the ranking would seem to be based on last season's performance, and on the difficulty of the schedule this season.  It's not surprising that Michigan is underrated in that metric.

Tennessee vs. West Virginia,…

Tennessee vs. West Virginia, to warm up for the UM-ND game.  I'm in Knoxville, so there's a local interest.  It will be interesting to see the start of the Jeremy Pruitt era.

Lots of possible scenarios. …

Lots of possible scenarios.  One could be - one loss tOSU beats undefeated Michigan in The Game.  Then OSU loses to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Title game.  One-loss Michigan and one-loss Wisconsin both go to playoff (with Michigan's schedule, a single loss at OSU will still make it a playoff team).

I'm an alum living in Tennessee.  My youngest son has become a HUGE fan of the Wolverines.  I was planning on getting tickets and traveling to Ann Arbor sometime this year as a present for his 10th birthday.

Thank you for looking to do something good with these tickets.

Mixed results

The 9-year-old is the youngest of eight children.  About half don't care about spectator sports.  My oldest did care . . . enough to root against whoever I was rooting for (until about age 16).  The 9-year-old seemed to clue in quicker than most, and was quick to adopt my rooting interests (to the point that he boos whenever he sees an Ohio license plate).  Perhaps I got better at training them as I aged.

Good point

I should've looked at the stats before making the statement.

Fair and balanced

Thanks for the link.  Brian' take was, as usual, snarky but clear and perceptive.  Money quote:

"Most years Peyton Manning would have been a slam dunk. He'd be a more deserving winner than 80% of the guys who actually got the trophy. But he had the misfortune to run up against the only compelling (primarily) defensive player in the history of the award."

Agree

I was thrilled whn Woodson won it, and I believe that he deserved it.  But we don't need to minimize Peyton's accomplishments.  In most years, Manning would have won it.  You can't compare across eras, etc., but look at the three top candidates this year.  Would any of them deserve the Heisman over Peyton Manning?

Wait . . .

Mo Hurst can't be that great.  Look at the lack of holding calls against him.

Having a son applying to colleges now . . .

I don't think that you mean "influences".  It is a parent's job to coach, advise, and help a son or daughter discern an important decision like this (which is what I would consider influence).

If you mean "dictates" then I agree completely.

Preacher Mike

That is all.

Tee Martin looking more likely

One of the prominent Vol blogs has Tee Martin on the top of their new board:

https://www.rockytoptalk.com/2017/11/27/16703564/tennessee-head-coachin…

The main knock is lack of experience.  He certainly wouldn't have been a first choice, but they are pretty far down the list now.  The advantages of Tee Martin: it would be a "bold" choice from the "possible up-and-comer" standpoint, but a "safe" choice for the fanbase - he led the team to a national championship as QB, and some has some capital to begin.
