As I am all by myself this evening - mother-in-law has the kids and my wife is at work - I went with the Guinness Extra Stout. I must remember not to have the beer replace dinner, of course, even though the "meal in a bottle" concept is not a bad concept with any beer.

We then spent 10 minutes calming the kid down, but in the middle of it the kid asks me "why cant we win good?" To which I also had no answer. I went to my car and grabbed a toy that my niece left in the car. I gave it to him and told him to cheer up, but I couldn't help but feel for him.
Although I hate to chuckle when you hear about kids trying to process a loss like that, the fact that this guy volunteered a toy that didn't belong to him in an effort to calm down this kid made me laugh for some reason. It might as well have been a wrapper with a half-eaten BK Tendercrisp in it - "Here, will this help?"
|4 hours 53 min ago||Terrible News...||
I had heard of the Mirror Lake jump leading to injuries before, but never death - that's the one thing you never want to hear, especially when it is something like students who were engaging in a campus tradition, turning a happy moment into a horrifying one. Very tragic and sad. Condolences to the family and friends of this student.
|5 hours 1 min ago||I Laughed...||
As I got to that part, I broke out laughing in the background of a rather serious moment in a show that my wife was watching in the family room, so I sort of had to explain myself that time (definitely not the first time I had to explain seemingly inappropriate laughter). However, I would actually be disappointed if Jim could not pull that off honestly.

There are a few things I could probably name that stand out, but this is also one of them. The fact that the playcalling is intelligent and has led to these nice, methodical drives on offense and to a defense that can change its face and adjust to whatever is in front of it has been a nice surprise. Add to that the fact that the adjustments throughout the game are directed and the staff has turned weakness into strength through some of the playcalling, and you have to say that the overall playcalling has been very fun to watch overall.

I've been actualy wondering about how much of the Indiana film you believe that Ohio State might be scouting - it seems like the game they might actually try and pull ideas from, that and Minnesota. Do you foresee them trying, for example, zone stretch with Elliott just to see if they can get away with it?
|9 hours 20 min ago||Now I Am Intrigued...||
OK, now I am intrigued. I am curious to see where you believe the banner fits into the alleged incident allegedly involving Craig James and five hookers. I am assuming this is going in the direction of it being used either as a mat to avoid spillage on a floor or as a wrap for the deceased, but I find your take interesting.
|9 hours 26 min ago||I Will Say This...||
I will say this, that for the times that I have been down there to watch Michigan play at Columbus, it seems like Bob Ufer was indeed correct if you wander around the stadium - you see about 10,000 alumni / alumnae and 74,000 truckers. Granted, the place is far larger than it was when he said that - it's more like 94,000 truckers now.
|12 hours 28 min ago||Today And Tomorrow...||
Today, I work in the AM only and then I basically get to drop my kids off with their grnadmother at 3 PM and I will have the remainder of the day to myself as my wife is working until late.
Tomorrow, pretty much the same tradition - family arrives just in time for some part of the dinner to be running a bit behind, but then everyone eats while the Lions play and then wakes up just in time to see the final score.

I have had some run-ins with real life myself in the course of this year - the largest one is that my father's battle with Parkinson's is starting to become a true battle on a daily basis and we had our first real scare when he had a small stroke in June. It puts an intriguing spin on holidays like Thanksigivng and - soon enough - Christmas because now I have begun to think about how many more of these will he be in my life for, but I also am learning to appreciate those moments more than I have in the past.
Through it all, MGoBlog has been a refuge of sorts for something about which I have always been passionate - Michigan athletics, the University, and the community surrounding it. Not just Ann Arbor, the city that basically raised me, but this highly engaged subset of the Michigan fanbase on MGoBlog that has, through the years, raised the bar on sports discussion with just the right hint of highly educated wit and obscure pop references to keep me coming back each day.
My thanks to the community was to take on its most thankless job, of course - being a mod. That might say a lot about my sanity and very little of it is likely promising, but it is my way of saying "Thanks" to everyone.
|21 hours 24 min ago||Same Here...||
I was in the midst of elementary school at the time, but my parents took me - primarily because I was already of the opinion that seeing Ohio State defeated was a nice day-capper. I definitely have a clear memory of this for one of the reasons some have stated - the place went absolutely nuts, was incredibly loud, but what a play indeed. We were near the Michigan bench, so that might have been the first good view I had of our now-coach.
|21 hours 38 min ago||The Exception...||
The MAC is one of those rare exceptions where I almost never check Massey or TeamRankings or any other site with predictive statistics before the game actually kicks off. I offer into evidence the fact that at this very moment, the Bobcats happen to be up 13 on the Huskies.

"But I just think he needed to get this team more grounded. I think that train left long ago. I think the culmination was a mess on Saturday in Columbus.”
I am going to have to agree with others here - until there is a consistent pattern of game plans that turn out to be wet farts and player behavior which turns wet farts into something even more detrimental, it might be a smidge early to pull the alarm in Columbus. Of course, it may happen in time if we're going to use Florida as the basis for the assumption, but we're probably not there quite yet.

According to this article from 247Sports - LINK - Mullen is also thought to be a rather serious candidate for the Virginia Tech job, and I would think that he would be an interesting replacement for Frank Beamer if indeed that materialized (we know so little right now, of course).
|1 day 11 min ago||The Snap Totals...||
He has played a total of 809 snaps so far this season, an average of more than 80 per game, with 635 snaps coming on defense, 150 on special teams and 24 on offense.
I actually didn't realize the average had been consistently that high all year, although with the opening of the "Peppers The RB" portion of the playbook (as well as all the work on special teams), it makes a lot of sense. You definitely can't say he is not one of the hardest working players on that team - he definitely is.
|1 day 22 min ago||I Will Say...||
Hopefully, I am not the only one who would find having a wide receiver named McDoom on the roster rather an awesome thing. Probably one of the more appropriate names for a wide receiver in recent memory.
|1 day 5 hours ago||I've Got One...||
I've got the blue version of the shirt with the maize Ohio and lettering - actually, the only interaction that the shirt has ever caused was one that was rather amusing and a conversation I had to excuse myslf from so I could laugh. I wore it into work on storm one time (I spent a lot of time dispatching from a conference room, so no one cares how I dress in this situation) and I was walking over to get coffee and heard, "What do you have against West Virginia?"
I looked around, not even thinking someone could misidentify Ohio.
"Your shirt, Lorne..."
"Oh, no, that's Ohio...."

This is an improvement definitely. The most startling revelation from last week's crew is that Huard and I apparently had the same or very similar sweater vests. My sweater vest has since been burned in the hope that a better set of announcers might be possible and it seems like that was achieved.
|1 day 6 hours ago||Top Four...||
If I had to guess the top four right now:
Clemson, Notre Dame, Iowa, Alabama - not necessarily in order - and that Iowa could be in that picture despite having an SOS that probably is the statistical outlier among the four is interesting.
Next four -
Ohio State, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma - big guess there. Bedlam is going to be a huge game for relative final position, I assume.
|1 day 7 hours ago||Interesting....||
So when he took the job at Michigan, it makes complete sense that he'd go right back to the relationships he built while recruiting for those programs. While at Stanford, California and Texas were primary recruiting territories.
For a long time now, the prime recruiting territories per capita have been in the west and south anyway, or so it seems. I can remember places like Ohio and Illinois being big 20-25 years ago, but each year since it seems like the relative scope of schools that go there that aren't right there, if you will, decreases. That being said, I don't think this staff would simply overlook it - they do seem to have eyes everywhere sometimes.
|1 day 8 hours ago||Yeah...||
The biggest issue over here is that we are still doing some cleanup work associated from the outages caused on Saturday evening and once in a while between the gluts of dispatching people, there are down moments. Without a functional MGoBlog, those tend to be very down moments indeed. On the upside, I managed to get real things done.
|1 day 8 hours ago||About This...||
Even without the rain, it could be problematic. The snow on Saturday fell with the ground still being warm-ish, so even though there are folks like me who watch 6-8 inches fall and stick during the Penn State game, it may has well have rained from how wet it is beneath right now. The rain definitely will not help that. Fingers crossed though, as I planned to utilize the course myself.
|1 day 20 hours ago||There Are A Few...||
There are actually a few who post here with varied degrees of a regularity, and many who just lurk (I've talked to a few on Twitter actually). There is at least one regular, in fact, who played concurrently with Jim Harbaugh, come to think of it, or so I would understand from the discussions I've had with him.

In another group at my office, there is indeed a Buckeye, a very nervous Buckeye at the moment, but we did make a small wager all the same. If Ohio State wins, I will buy him a nice lunch at a restaurant of his choice (within a reasonable distance of the office, of course, but that was his choice), and if Michigan wins, the buyer and benificiary are simply reversed. Oh, and the loser in each scenario displays the flag of the other school in their office for a week too.

It's definitely a bad sign for Mark Richt when he's lost control of silent commitments, meteorology and the dialogue regarding his own future within the span or a year or so, not to mention two of those in the same day.

I saw this come across Twitter and my heart just sank - very heartbroken for the Carr family.
I can't even imagine...and it just is not fair. Thoughts go out to the Carrs in this difficult time.
Cancer can fuck itself.
|2 days 5 hours ago||Exactly...||
This is a group that was witness to Michigan football at its most disjointed and tumultuous on many levels and they stuck together and stayed here and are seeing the beginning of a bright future for their team. I can't think of a better way for them to go out than with a win over Ohio State - that was be a fitting "thank you" in its own right.
