Re Count Scary: Imitation is the sincerest form of Flaherty.

His uniform number matches…

His uniform number matches the first digit of my age.

My first NHL game was…

My first NHL game was January 25, 1951, the Wings versus the Bruins at the Olympia. I witnessed one of the most intense fights ever. Ted Lindsay and Bill Ezenicki engaged in stick swinging, fisticuffs and head on ice banging. Both were suspended by the league. I have to say that "Fight Night at the Joe" comes close to that game.

Me and Jug Girard.

Me and Jug Girard.

Considering all that they…

Considering all that they did to derail Michigan's chances, who among the BIG 10 coaches and officials congratulated Michigan publicly on their NC victory?

While some believe that SC…

While some believe that SC or UCLA would have an advantage over teams from east of the Rockies, I don't.  Alabama has a pretty good Rose Bowl record, although they haven't won since the 1946 game. I know, I know.

Russ Thomas should be near…

Russ Thomas should be near the top.  One could continue to hate this bastard as he pursued a pro career as a player and as a part of management.

I'm glad Barry lacked the…

I'm glad Barry lacked the patience to wait one more year when he took the LA Kings coaching job. Otherwise, he would have been the Red Wings coach the following season. Instead, we had to settle for Scotty Bowman.

Never part of a team that…

Never part of a team that beat Michigan or Ohio State. Still, that does not detract from his greatness as an individual player.

John Cooper was the only…

John Cooper was the only Ohio State coach to lose three in a row to Michigan and keep his job. Even Woody was canned. Although there were extenuating circumstances about his firing, I believe OSU would have let him go after the Clemson game.

I thought the Gregorian…

I thought the Gregorian chant, "Christe Redemptor", was an honest effort, but the fans around me thought I was a Notre Dame fan.

When I was a kid, we had…

When I was a kid, we had three Detroit papers delivered to the house. The Sunday editions recapping Saturday football were outstanding, the pictorials beyond anything today. My father had me reading before I started school because he let me have the sports sections before him. Yes, life was better is an accurate assessment.

Too bad The Detroit Times is…

Too bad The Detroit Times is beyond the 40-year limit although Joe Falls wrote for them. I would add Vartan Kupelian, Jack Berry and Pete Waldmeir to the list.  Glad someone recognized George Cantor.

McGraw Avenue bordered the…

McGraw Avenue bordered the south end of the DeSoto plant and just east of it was Lefty's Bar.  My father often took my brother and me there for one of the greatest roast beef sandwiches. Oh, they also had Michelob on tap which you could not get in a bottle in those days. It was just cokes for the kids, and by the way, don't tell your mother.  Great film.

Prior to Bo's arrival,…

Prior to Bo's arrival, Michigan fans never had to complain about a bowl loss.  Our off-seasons were spent gnashing our teeth over losses to MSU and OSU. All things considered, I much prefer the current state.

My dog is a big Ohio State…

My dog is a big Ohio State fan.  He wears a large "O" beneath his tail.

Since this site is dedicated…

Since this site is dedicated to college football, let us not forget the Quantico Marines football teams. I believe they played to a sellout at U of M in 1923 and even had a first quarter lead. It was a big game at the time with numerous political and military big names in attendance. Quantico was regularly on the University of Detroit schedule when they had a football program. That's where I saw them play back in the fifties. I believe Quantico's nickname was the Devil Dogs.

Perhaps it's an example of…

Perhaps it's an example of my elderly intolerance, but I really question why anyone today cites ESPN as a source.  Someone wrote that everything that ages must decay.  This is certainly the case with the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network.  It is becoming similar to the deterioration of Sports Illustrated.  In my younger days, the comment was always, "Did you read what SI said ...". Sadly, the magazine stinks worse than Henry Luce does today.  For you youngsters, he founded the magazine.  I watch ESPN when there's a decent football game on.  But, even then you see poor production techniques, repetitive crowd scenes, commentary without factual basis, etc..  This was predicted by Jack Arute on a long ago WTKA  morning show.  Likewise, while watching at the gym the morning shows appear to mirror each other.  I'm guessing a bit as the sound is off.  In any case, if they could get Lebron James to sign with the Cowboys, they would never have to come up with any new subject for discussion.  I'm afraid the mouse has eliminated any hope of credibility.

That 2004 game began in a…

That 2004 game began in a comfortable temperature, people in short sleeve and shorts.  By the end, however, it was damn cold.  I can remember ABC showing Michigan fans leaving in the 3rd quarter with the team behind 27-10, citing their lack of support for doing so. Au contraire, one's testicles were in one's throat because of the temperature dip. You never know what the end of October will be like.

To answer your question in a…

To answer your question in a non-specific way, "Never", as long as the team remains under Ford family ownership. They demonstrate an inability to select, managers, coaches, scouts, players, etc., that are able to win. I believe they have only drafted four players since 1965 who have made the Hall of Fame as Lions. The Steelers had four in the 1974 draft alone. At least because of my age, I was able to enjoy three championships.

When Hussein and Khomeini…

When Hussein and Khomeini went to war, I didn't cheer for either side. But, did hope for a number of casualties.  ND/OSU is a similar situation.

More than likely there are…

More than likely there are not enough rock and roll live fans over 65 on this site to remember how great this album was. Whippin' Post was my favorite from "At Fillmore East". One should not forget Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus".  Dixie Chicken flowing into Tripe Face Boogie are 16 minutes of genius vocal and instrumental effort.  In the view of many, the writer included, these were the two best live rock and roll albums ever recorded.  I sure was lucky to be born in the 40s.

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Naked…

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Naked City, The Defenders - There were other shows made before 1960, but at my age I can't remember them.  However, you must include Justified in the more contemporary period.

Visited Hilton Head two months after you in '78.  Played Harbour Town, 18 holes and cart, 24 bucks.  The price may have increased since then.  Inflation gets me pissed.

As my rooting interest in the Red Wings goes back to the 1940s, I'm happy that Toronto is out of the playoffs.  Don't particularly care who wins. However, Edmonton was once a Detroit farm club.

Usually "the where were you…

Usually "the where were you when" question gets asked about the Kennedy assassination.  When I first heard about the president being shot, I was at a Tiger-Yankee game in the summer of 1968 while waiting in the beer line.  I guess I had been somewhat out of touch for a while. Never mixed alcohol and drugs after that.

Christ, I've yet to open the Ummagumma album that I picked up at Korvettes when they were having a sale.

In the early 90s, I was…

In the early 90s, I was sitting in the Denver airport listening to PA announcements.  They would announce a name and tell you to go to the white phone.  "Peter Gozinya, Freda Slaves, Claude Balls, etc., were just a few.  I then realized someone was calling names into the system that came from the NatLamp high school yearbook.  P. J. O'Rourke's influence went to many places.  What a writing genius.

At my age, I may have heard…

At my age, I may have heard of these bands, but I can't remember right now.  Nevertheless, best live albums ever recorded were Live at the Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers and Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus.  If you prefer "shit-kicking", anything by Patsy Cline or Johnny Cash. "Shit-smoking", a varied menu by the Stones, Clapton, or Dylan. What do I know?  I'm still looking for the Air Aces on WABX.

First time I heard of him…

First time I heard of him was when I read the program credits for the musical Hair when it was performed at the Norwest movie theatre in Detroit in 1968. I thought it was a strange name for a stage actor. Who knew?

Chose the Quantico Marines…

Chose the Quantico Marines over Army and Navy when the Devil Dogs had a team.  They used to play the U of D Titans quite often.  Played Michigan in 1923 in a much publicized matchup, but ended up on the losing end.

Last sentence certainly…

Last sentence certainly expresses the attitude of my day.

Be patient, my son, but more than likely when Satan opens his ice rink.

If I recall correctly,…

If I recall correctly, Michigan had a 30-14 lead over Miami in 1988 in the 4th quarter,  Lost by one point.  Eventually, things repeat.

Still, not as much fun as…

Still, not as much fun as watching Iran and Iraq at war a couple decades back.

Perhaps it's just the…

Perhaps it's just the Yankees and Red Sox syndrome.  Jimmy Piersall complained many times about "the unemployed auto workers" who threw small batteries at him from the centerfield bleachers at Tiger stadium.  Likewise, I was at a Yankees-Tiger game in the early 60s when the fans disputed a Moose Skowron home run.  There was an incredible garbage shower directed at the Yanks when they took the field. Included were some seats which the paying customers ripped from their base. Hell, the 1934 World Series had a similar situation over a spiking incident.  Regardless of player safety, throwing stuff at the opposition is a baseball tradition.

Since the undefeated season…

Since the undefeated season in '97, the road record is barely above .500. If you want a coach who can win on the road, let's rehire Gary Moeller. Harbaugh's road record is consistent with the three coaches who preceded him.

Foster Hewitt in the gondola…

Foster Hewitt in the gondola and Danny Gallivan's cannonading drives weren't bad either, although we're talking 50s here and four Wing cups.  Jesus, am I getting old!

Since 1970, the Lions have…

Since 1970, the Lions have drafted two individuals who have become members of the Hall of Fame.  More than anything else, this demonstrates the inability of ownership to find the right people to scout and evaluate.  Until proven otherwise, why would anyone think that the Lions are capable of selecting great players?  In the 1974 draft, the Steelers picked four hall of famers.
