I did my undergrad during the tommy a years and they couldn't give those tickets away. I remember a game against Miami where the tickets were like 5$ upper bowl and it was still 3/4 empty....
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Do you live in Ann Arbor?||
Or are close enough to travel easily to games?
I only ask because I used to have the same sentiments that you are expressing when I lived on the east coast: "What's wrong for you people complaining about going to Michigan Stadium. I WISH I could be there for a game..."
Then I moved back to Ann Arbor - close enough where I can conceivably go to every game I want - and I get what they were bitching about.
To me, the RAWK music and ads don't really turn me off; it's the money and lack of compelling games. But for one or two games a year (MSU, OSU, ND, Nebraska), I don't really feel the need to spend hundreds of bucks to watch Michigan clobber some MAC cupcake or (hopefully) win easily against Rutgers. Not when I can still expereince the tailgate atmosphere and watch the game on my couch with some nice beers and good chicken wings

About this. I don't think Borges was entirely to blame, but hard to argue with the disaster this past second half of the year.
Mgrowold -- what are your thoughts??
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Win or lose I am definitely||
Win or lose I am definitely impressed with state --- which disgusts me to say. I am a hoke "homer" and even I can see they are playing on an entirely different level than us. I am actually impressed we kept it close for as long as we did...
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Don't||
Usually say this but the msm has a great article about the potential politics behind his departure:
|9 weeks 5 days ago||Okay||
Well we have nothing to discuss if you don't think the head coach of a football team is not responsible for his record. You can't argue with stupid.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||this thread is fun.||
and alot of you people are revisionist idiots, sadomasochists, or both.
the worst development of the year has been the constant comparisons between michigan and RR. this place was 95% more pro-rr than anything else on the internet, and the only one upset over the firising was His Dudeness, or whatever ... everyone else saw it coming - even brian.
by the way, he was fired because he had the worst defense in the history of michigan football, was blown out by rivals, and let wisconsin run the ball 40 straight times. (seriously, does anyone remember that wisconsin game or are you all living in bizarro-world, where rr was a successful coach at michigan but somehow got ran out of town...?)
he is doing mediocre at arizona, but so what? he failed at michigan, for almost all reasons that were his fault; whatever he does at arizona will not affect that fact one way or the other.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||Yikes||
Hard to imagine our line is actually getting younger, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence ....
|10 weeks 3 days ago||these are the type of stories||
that go right into michigan lore.
sucks we didnt win, but this is the kind of thing that 30 years from now people tell their kids "i remember watching DG throw for 400 yards against ohio on a broken foot..."
heal up DG and bring us back to the promiseland next year...

i was at the arizona game, but i havent been to a college bball game since my undergrad days. every other posession there was a break - there didnt seem to be any rythm in the game, the crowd never could get into it. there were just breaks, and breaks, and breaks.
was the amount of timeouts in this game an anomaly - or is it becoming standard in the college game? the timeouts had never seemed so pronounced watching on tv...
|12 weeks 1 day ago||I guess||
We will agree to disagree - I just don't see it going back to the so called "big boys" and the rest of them.
Texas tech, Baylor, Texas A&m, and tcu have all had better seasons than Texas in the last five years - and that's just in Texas alone. The landscape is changing, and if I'm an up and coming coach what's the incentive to leave a comfortable situation when I am making a boat load of money and winning?
Anyways I guess we all will wait and see but I think the hiring will be underwhelming and Texas may strike out on their top choices.
|12 weeks 1 day ago||Meh||
Call me crazy, but I think who ever Texas hires will NOT be a big time hire (ie not Meyer, harbaugh, Saban, etc). College football is a crazy world these days - not only with inflated coaching salaries but teams like Baylor, Michigan state, Ucf, Louisville, etc can play in bcs bowl games - there's more parity than ever meaning people can win at "smaller" programs with out the additionally stress. And when coaches like sumlin are getting five million a year for winning zero conference titles or bcs games, why would a coach leave to a big time program?
I mean michigan found this out the hard way and I think Texas will too. Whoever they get I bet the collective reaction will be "that guy?!"
|12 weeks 2 days ago||am i||
the only one that thinks the thomas gordon - nebraska safety swap could have been more of a doghouse-type situation? as in, thomas gordon might have broken some amorphous team rule and was thus delegated to special teams duty?
it just doesnt make sense otherwise to take out a multi-year starter at safety for one game.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||i was thinking||
the same thing. there are some schools that wouldn't take saban with open arms. im not sure if texas is one of those schools, but judging from mack brown and their academic reputation, i am guessing they may not be a win-at-all-cost school. put it another way, would michigan take saban? i doubt it.
|13 weeks 7 hours ago||This is||
Best case scenario for michigan, no? A big time program without their senior starting quarterback. I'll take it.
As an aside, is mark richt the most like able coach in the sec- or do I just not know much about him? He seems to be one of the few guys that does things the right way (not over signing?), but I'll also admit a certain level of ignorance if one wants to correct me...
|13 weeks 1 day ago||Well||
Let's not forget that last year msu was 7-6.
They have done really well, no doubt about, but they will fluctuate between good/great to mediocre. Ostensibly, michigan will eventually fluctuate between good/great to elite (assuming this isn't a notre dame type situation)
|13 weeks 1 day ago||Kinda bizarre to say||
But I was thinking the same thing. Elite defense with an offense that uses a lot of dinky misdirection, power, frustrating three yard runs, with the occasional connected long ball.
We don't have to necessarily emulate Stanford when the paradigm is right in our own conference...
|13 weeks 2 days ago||is anyone||

was very cryptic about peppers on this podcast, which was less than confident inspiring.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||As Brian says: Football is ridiculous.||
And I would go one step further and say: College football is even more ridiculous. It may be the only sport where past performance does not necessarily predict future results. A look at some of the teams currently playing for conference titles:
Az St 8-5 last season
Auburn / Mizzou total combined record of 2-14 in SEC play last season
Baylor 8-5 last season
Duke – pre-season pick to finish last in ACC Coastal
MSU 7-6 last season
So, for those who believe our record this season proves we’re going to be mired in mediocrity for the foreseeable future, remember that the past isn’t necessarily prologue when it comes to college football…
|13 weeks 6 days ago||re your last sentence||
Felt the exact same way. Those three yards really changed the whole dynamic of the Urban vs Hoke meme. If we convert, Hoke is 2-1 against ohio, 1-1 against Urban. As it stands, he is now 1-2 against Ohio and, most importantly, 0-2 against Urban.
That sets up a must-win at the Shoe next year, otherwise the whispers that say Hoke can't beat Urban would become shouts.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||They are||
A young team. And young teams will lose some games they shouldn't lose, but they will also win some games they shouldn't win. They came up three yards short which sucks but there was enough to build on today to be excited moving forward.
Definitely next year though the leash gets shorter and there won't be any good feelings for moral victories.....
|14 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed||
Go blue! Disappointed as hell but what heart - proud to be a michigan fan and glad I never turned my back on the team. There's a lot to build off of for next year.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||4 lineman||
And the best back in the big ten is nothing to scoff at on offense.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||Hated||
That last minute like everyone else... Ah they are playing well but you get the feeling the offense is sputtering a bit and the defense is.... Pourous.
Al has to keep his foot on the gas to borrow a bad cliche. We're definitely not done yet- when this team shows up they are still good.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||He's got to be||
Hurt or at least in the dog house right?? Can't believe he wouldn't be out there....?
|14 weeks 1 day ago||I think||
The most frustrating part of the season is that Brian has become Drew Sharp. If he, and everyone else, hates this team, why not find a new team to support? I hear there is some great coach in the desert that runs a spread offense AND just beat Oregon last week.
|14 weeks 5 days ago||let me see if understand this...||
brady hoke has a comment at a presser yesterday and refers to fans as "fickle."
there are 117 comments about said presser already on the frontpage, none of which even reference the fickle comment.
there are no board postings about the fickle comment.
AND YET, brian posts this rant, at which point a majority of the 140+ comments have agreed this is the most egregious betrayal, a slap to the face of all michigan fans everywhere.
does anyone think for themselves anymore on this board, or do we always have to wait for brian to tell us how we should feel?
|14 weeks 6 days ago||I'm not||
saying florida isn't good, but i think you may be conflating recent florida success for urban meyer success.
since spurrier left (2001), they have had 5+ losing seasons six times, out of twelve years. this spans zook, muschamp, and yes, even meyer himself.
urban won big with tebow, but given the rest of the decade i don't know if you can guarantee a coaching change will bring success.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||pining||
was an exaggeration, but this isn't the first time that brian, and others, have compared this season to a 3-9 outfit and came away saying "3-9 was awful but had an element of fun in it"
|14 weeks 6 days ago||well,||
and with that, the rest of the blog will follow like lemmings off the cliff.
if you're reminiscing about a 3-9 season, then you've either completly re-written history or are utterly delusional. at the very least, you're demonstrating the brain capacity of a child - "this is the WORST thing to EVER happen to me." apart from everything else that happened in that season - the broken bowl streak, toledo, the northwestern snowstorm - we also lost to this guy. yes, if you're pining for 3-9 then you've completely gone through the looking glass, where sanity no longer applies.
the team is bad, sure. it happens. and they may get embarassed on saturday, but that happens too. there is some water bottle story, i think, that brian wrote somewhere back in the day that applies here, and i am taking those lessons and sticking with the team. you all can live in a 2008 fantasy world where nick sheridan has just beaten minnesota and everything is going to be a-okay.
go blue. beat the bucks.

Yes Hoke loves losing And we're going 0-13 next year. If you hate this team, do us all a favor and stop watching now.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||I agree||
And I am slowly coming more towards your way of thinking. I have not seen so much pessimism regarding a non-rich rod coached Michigan team since.....ever? Even when we played Alabama there was more confidence on the board, and last I checked we're not playing bama again Saturday.
I think the underdog role helps this team, Gardner comes out slinging, and our team plays up to the competition. We win by 10 - not comfortable enough though to prevent me from having multiple heart attacks
|18 weeks 5 days ago||well||

|19 weeks 5 days ago||I agree with you as well||
The Norfleet hype has been around since he committed and Brian called him his favorite recruit in the class. Since then it's been a lot of confirmation bias (seeing what you want to see) and extrapolated hype from the mgoechochamber. I think he's good - and can be great - but the way people talk about him despite all the evidence to the contrary is just another example of the masses parroting Brian.
|19 weeks 6 days ago||Well||
you appear to be wrong, as Rod Beard from Detnews tweeted out 35 minutes ago that Leyland is taking an as-of-now unnamed position within the Tigers organization. He wants to retire a Tiger.
|20 weeks 4 days ago||Well||
as we all know the transitive property of college football is infallible. Which is good, I guess, because that means we’ll beat MSU (since they lost to notre dame)…
…but wait, MSU beat Indiana, who I’ve been assured we’re going to lose to next week. So if we beat notre dame, and notre dame beat MSU, but we lost to Penn State, who lost to Indiana, who lost to MSU, then we…tie MSU?
But facetiousness aside, you naysayers out there saying we’re going to lose every game are so myopic that you just parrot “Durrr AKRON durr” and ignore the million other data points from the season. We’re favored in three of the remaining games, I believe, and a pick-em in the fourth. By objective standards we should still be looking at a 9-3 season, or at worst 8-4.
|20 weeks 4 days ago||Why?||
Go ahead. Tell me how we would be "lucky" to beat both Iowa and Indiana. Explain to me how Nebraska is an automatic loss. Or tell me how Northwestern would have to "forget how to play" inorder for us to stand a chance.
|20 weeks 6 days ago||The headphone||
debate is a red herring. Aside from the point the poster above makes, Hoke has a guy next to him who keeps him informed about the playcalls. He's mentioned this before in press conferences and you can even see him on the sidelines. Hoke knows the plays and knows what is going on, both on offense and defense. He doesn't need a headset to keep his hand on the pulse.
|20 weeks 6 days ago||I am||
worried about the same thing...
|20 weeks 6 days ago||this||
The assumption here is that Borges is free to call any plays he wants but chooses to still run the ball into the line over and over again. I am not sure that's the case. We'll never know for sure, but my guess is that Hoke is dictating what he wants to see. I think we may be seeing the 3-3-5 all over again, but on offense...
|21 weeks 10 hours ago||I'm worried||
That what we've just seen is effectively the 2009 Illinois game where the collective feeling of the fan base went from "it's not a matter of if but when" we'll win a championship to "I don't know anymore....."
And like it was in 2009, the game became a microcosm of all the problems of the previous few years: uninspiring road performance, no run game, stubborn and questionable play calls.
It just seems like we haven't seen much improvement, even against the bad teams. None of this started last night; it's been a pattern that's repeated itself for all of Hokes tenure. I mean when was the last time we had a solid non quarterback running game?
So to answer the op's question, I am not going to advocate firing any coaches, though I wouldn't shed any tears if Borges left either. But what I do know is that we may be looking back at the game last night at the beginning of an end....
|21 weeks 3 days ago||question||
Is the defensive line performing far enough below expectations that it appears the Heininger Certainty Theory may not be so certain after all? Or are we comfortable enough chalking this up to youth/inexperience?

Hmm…3 days ago it was funk’s o-line that was root of all our problems and after today’s UFR everyone has shifted their angst towards fitz. I’m no savant when it comes to the nuances of football – which is why I devour brains’ UFR – but I find it particularly baffling that the same people now calling out Fitz were calling out the o-line only 72 hours ago.
I’d like to get Magnus’ take on this, as one of the football gurus here he called Fitz the MVP of the game on his blog:
MVP of the game . . . Fitzgerald Toussaint. Gardner put up 248 passing yards and 103 rushing yards, but he also turned over the ball four times. Toussaint looked like the running back of old on his way to 19 carries for 71 yards and 1 touchdown, along with 1 reception for 27 yards. His numbers would have been better if a couple runs wouldn't have been called back for holding (probably closer to 21 carries for 120 yards). One thing I have also noticed with Toussaint is an improvement in pass protection. He did noticeably whiff on a blitzing linebacker, but he's much more physical than he used to be.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||thoughts||
I think the biggest letdown so far this season has been the defensive play. We knew the interior o-line was going to be…a work in progress…but the defense was supposed to be great, trending towards elite. Instead, it seems as if we’ve regressed to an average unit without any true playmakers. As Brian mentioned, it’s one thing to play bend-but-don’t-break defense against Notre Dame, but seeing Akron bleed their way down the field with short hitches and quick throws was very distressing. Is everything revolving around protecting the safeties, or is there another reason why we’re 10 yards off Akron receivers and/or not bringing a blitz?
I still think Akron was more a fluke than the start of a pattern, mainly because of what we were able to do to Notre Dame, who I think is a pretty good team despite their game against Purdue (after all, they probably were in let-down mode as well). I still believe in the Henninger principle theory and think the defense can still improve; however, the running game (namely the offensive line) remains a huge concern. Nothing yesterday changes the fact that I still think we’re undefeated going into November…

with most all this, but i dont believe justice hayes == vincent smith, unless, of course, borges continually slams hayes into the offensive line on third and short. but i do think smith's third down blocking was above-average to pretty good, and hayes wont be at the same level due to inexperience. not sure how much it matters on the grand scheme of things...

why you consider a "ponderous" green to be panic inducing? i for one can sleep comfortably knowing we still have a former 1000 yard RB returning.
as to the O-line, im in the boat that thinks it can't be any worse than last year.
and finally, to the secondary (particularly safeties), let's not forget what the staff has done in the past. until we see otherwise, we have no reason to assume the defense will be anything less than very good.
overall, i see mild room for concern at some positions, but what teams DONT have that; there is nothing close to a sheridan/threet battle of doom versus gloom.

Agree. Also lost in the shuffle was the bad shot trey took right after. He knew he had to press, took a bad shot, missed, and that was the game.

Yes. We all get frustrated when the refs swallow their whistle during the muggings under the basket. I am all for tightening that up. However, I don’t want to see every nudge, every little touch, every finger on a guy turn into free throws. It’s the reason why I stopped watching the NBA and find college basketball more enjoyable: if aaron craft shoots 25 free throws a game because a foul is called on him for every drive, what fun is that? Hows that improving anything?

Chronic tournament underachiever. Another painful loss for them, even earlier than usual. |51 weeks 2 days ago||mehh||
That about sums it up for me. This team peaked at the end of January finishing 6-6 in the big ten. It’s hard to be upset, or even surprised, by this game, as its been a microcosm of the whole season.
If we’re looking for positives – I guess it’s nice to have a week off (though they didn’t do much after their last week). Also, everyone is already picking against them so maybe they will play looser being a 3/4 seed.
Mehh. Disappointing today, but not exactly unanticipated.
|51 weeks 3 days ago||meh||
Coming into this, everything about the game screamed “slow start.” I’d be a bit worried if it remained close, but we were able to pull away convincingly which is all that really matters, especially because most of our early problems could be attributed to Morgan (for better or worse).
They do have to learn though that starting that slow in the NCAA tournament means your season is over.

Ten days, three ranked opponents, two on the road. State: Zero ranked opponents, two games at home over the same time.
Tough, ugly loss for sure but we are definitely closer to the team that played well against Indiana and osu versus the team that got crushed tonight.
We're not the #1 team but were no slouch either...

Game KILLED this team. I think they let Wisconsin beat them twice.
What a brutal stretch though - four ranked teams in a row, three of them on the road.

If I agree with your statement here:
That is like saying because Miami, or Ohio, or USC all got caught cheating, other top-level NCAA teams are cracking down – this almost assuredly isn’t the case. People are going to do anything for more money - lie, cheat, hell, maybe even make up fake girlfriends.
In fact, the story about Juventus I think proves the contrary and more ominous point – if one of the biggest teams in one of the biggest countries for the most popular sport in the world fixes matches, then anyone and everyone could potentially be doing it, not just those obscure Turkish teams.

Exactly – if you read the Pete Thamel transcript from SI yesterday, Teo was en route to his home in Hawaii when he found out that the girlfriend’s family was going to “pull the plug on her.” He was probably taking off from a plane in Southern California, talking to his girlfriend, while she was literally on her death bed in Southern California.
The fact that this is one of many bizarre stories of this whole scandal just gives more credence to the whole “when there is smoke…” argument. I might be able to believe he didn’t know anything…for a while…but don’t tell me he believed up until December 6th his girlfriend was real – if he didn’t see her on her death bed.

For sure but this game hasn't changed ANYthing. So many factors against us today - geez if stauskas just hits ONE three we win this game. Anyways we won't be #1 - yet - but that was never the goal.
I will second the poster whose sick of losing to those "inbreds".

like we're watching the demise of college football - with superconferences breaking up traditional rivalries, the shameless money-grabs, etc – i’ll always love this game because of players like denard. Electrifying talent, humble, class, and sometimes even maddening – denard robinson is what makes college football great.

Could have used JT Floyd today- dont you think Magnus?
Overall 8-5 is a disappointing year- sad to see denard walk off the field for the last time...
Thought there were still enough positives to have optimism about next year. Obviously biggest question mark is the OL .
With that game, I can't believe Lewan wouldn't be gone.

I'll admit I am a bit puzzled by this move but I think a bit of perspective is necessary...stats showed that he was an average kick returner and he couldn't garner meaningful playtime, even with our atrocious running game. The way people are acting seems like we just moved denard to safety...

would have been a great addition:
-academically they are right there with ohio, in front of purdue, minnesota, msu, indiana, etc
-good grad programs too. UPMC is internationally recognized.
-pitt is a great city and would have been a fun road trip. Only 4 hours from ann arbor.
The problem is they cant even get on local tv – they don’t bring eyes. No one cares about pitt– it’s a professional sports town. also, I’ve never been to Rutgers, but pitt would immediately come in as the worst stadium in the big ten (professional stadium, tailgate under a highway).

I will be waiting for Brian’s UFR but it seemed to me he had an efficient game…until the point it became clear the offense was sputtering and he started to press. I thought he played well in the first half, at least well enough to feel confident moving into the second half. After halftime though, he never seemed to get back into rhythm – which I blame on playcalls. It seems like he would complete a pass on first down and get pulled out; or a run would lose yards on first down, and Devin would have to come in in a passing situation. By the time he got extended play it was that last drive where he seemed to really be pressing and totally out of synch…
…unrelated but something worth mentioned was the 10 yard holding penalty on Schofield on the last drive, which I believe negated a Devin first down (on the OSU side of the field…). That’s a huge call that went against us, as we had just put together two first downs. That might have been the call that cost us the game.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||It’s hard to believe that||
for all the goodwill Hoke has generated, he has gone 3-3 against our biggest rivals (0-3 on the road) and 1-1 in our showcase games (Alabama, VT). The problem hasn’t been our defense – and I think we can all agree that Hoke/Mattison will churn out elite defenses in the future – but there is a …. worrying…trend developing with the offense. Even though Borges has been working with offensive skill players that are not necessarily suited to his prior experiences, we do have some alarming data points from the past two years that transcend personnel. Including:
- Conservatism in biggest games: Outside of OSU last year we’ve come out mainly flat and predictable in our biggest tests. In Minnesota last year and Iowa this year we showed an unpredictable, unique, and explosive offense in the weeks leading up to a big game. But the play calls in MSU last year and OSU this year were largely more conservative than what we had been seeing. (And let’s not forget – we grinded out the victory against MSU this year, but Borges’ gamplan still left much to be desired). I see that Hoke just came out and said that he saw no problems with the gameplan – which leads me to believe that this is Hoke’s philosophy - keep it close and win it at the end with defense and field position. It is no coincidence, then, that our 3 wins against rivals come at home, where homecrowd is a field-goal advantage… and the three losses come on the road, where the margin for error in a close, conservative game is much thinner.
- Inability to run a two-minute offense: Off the top of my head, I can think of Iowa, MSU, and OSU where we looked completely disheveled in our two-minute offense. Like Brian says, Denard bailed us out in OSU – but that doesn’t absolve the fact that we were content to run off the clock with 90 seconds. Conversely, OSU gets the ball with 40 seconds left, keeps their foot on the pedal and drives down the field for a field goal. It wound up not mattering, but those are points that can kill you in a close game.

All the bemoaning still going on over the neutral site dallas game. It seems to me that there are two arguments trotted out each time this conversation comes up:
1) We made a few thousand less than another home gome
who really cares? Neither you, nor brian, nor myself will feel that “hit”. Michigan athletic department will still be significantly in the black; the football and basketball programs will still maintain a nearly unlimited fountain of resources; and the non-revenue sports will still get proportionally their slice of the pie. The lamenting that we “could have made more money” seems almost superficial (especially for those complaining about new jerseys that increase revenues) – unless of course, one constantly makes it a point to criticize mega-corporations in which they have no financial affiliation.
2) Its not a home and home
there seems to be a feeling of “what could have been” by travelling to tuscaloosca for an away game. But I ask – if you complain that you cant experience an Alabama home game, have you travelled to every school in the big 10? For the vast majority, my guess would be no. If your complaint is that you couldn’t experience a major college town atmosphere – I am sure you could still do so by visiting Penn state, Wisconsin, Nebraska, iowa, or even OSU.
(And its not like lodging, ticket cost, and travel expenses to Alabama will be significantly cheaper than going to dallas - if at all)
|1 year 26 weeks ago||im just sayin....||
i wonder if norfleet would get this kind of attention if brian didn't hype him up at every opportunity.
with that said, i was at the game and what excited me the most about norfleet wasnt so much his returns, but rather his...demeanor. i know this blog generally scoffs at unquantifiable qualities like "intangibles” but norfleet was the only one on that sideline who seemed pissed. I think he might have been one of the few players who generally wanted to get out there and…hit somebody. i wish he had an opportunity to get in some plays at RB.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||felt||
the same way. watching live (and drunk) it seemed much, much worse.
the first denard INT after that long touchdown seemed to deflate the defense alot. having to defend bama against that short field seemed to really put the nail in the coffin. it was demoralizing.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||my two cents||
flew in to dallas and just got home today. thought the whole experience was great (except the actual score). i was actually fine with this game being scheduled, and will enjoy it more in 2-3 years when michigan is back on top. we were top billing all summer long - something that doesnt happen when we open the season with WMU.
thought jerryworld was fantastic. before the kickoff was like one giant party - had not experienced something like that before, not even the big house. everyone was having a great time and the atmosphere was jovial between all fans, more or less. bama fans were generally nice, but "ROLL TIDE" got to be very annoying.
the whole weekend had a "bowl game" atmosphere, minus the bittersweet feeling that the season is done. maybe thats what made it so fun - a bowl game atmosphere AND 11+ more games left.
we lost and got embarssed on national tv, but like has already been said, all our goals are still within reach. the season still hinges on MSU, at NEB, and at OSU. saturday night changes nothing.
for those pining for a home and home - it would be nice to play BAMA at home (though for many of us - like myself - the big house is still a plane ride away), but how many would have gone to tuscaloosca? i would say the crowd was about 55-45 bama/mich fans - we would not have anywhere near those numbers in tuscaloosca. this game gave us a nice travel opportunity and made us prime billing. i have no problem with either of these things.

i came away thinking that piece had a very pro-pacer slant and was written in a way that made detroit look bad.
the way they describe "20,000 fans throwing chairs and ready to fight" really seems a bit exaggerated to me. at one point, one of the pacers comments that he was afraid for his life beause he was worried the "thugs" from the upper decks were making their way towards the stands, as if they were some maurading gang of mongols.
i would hardly call that situation life-threatening for the players.

I don’t understand the angst and trepidation after the state game. take a look at who the mens bball team has played versus who they have left. Their remaining schedule looks like this:
Home vs illini
Home vs ohio
Home vrs purdue
At penn state
At worst, I think, they will finish 5-2, with a slim chance to go 7-0 (more likely 6-1 with that one loss being ohio). That’s anywhere from 22 wins – 24 wins overall, before the big ten tourney, and maybe a top three finish in the big 10.

But if PSU goes the way its looking like its going… who fills in the competitive balance? Illinois? Indiana? Purdue? Ugh. Not exactly the gauntlet, the leaders division.

I thought this exact same thing. Assuming meyer isn’t lying and he knows whats coming, how the hell could the ncaa even pretend to do its job anymore? If this were the case, osu would be so clearly in the ncaa’s pocket that they know ahead of time the consequences they are going to face. That screams collusion. On the other hand, if meyer is just flat out lying to the recruits, and he has no idea what the punishments will be, that just makes him look like an utter dirtbag.
I don’t know. But this whole situation with osu vis a vis the ncaa is very upsetting.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||agree on the Shafer||
I would also like to hear more about the Robinson hire – why did RR wait a month get Robinson? What was the dynamic like between Robinson and the other defensive coordinators (who were all RR guys)? Ive asked bacon this before on one of his chats and I think he copped out of the issue, saying something like “his focus on the time was with other players, coaches, etc.” I think it may or may not be BS – seeing as how close Bacon was with the entire team and all the coaches, I am sure he gleaned a lot of knowledge that went unpublished about Shafer/Robinson and the defensive fiasco.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||.||
That negated touchdown still bothers me. What was that ref thinking? Seriously. What was he looking at? Did he just utterly neglect the one camera angle? There is no way that call should have been overturned. The worst part is listening to all these osu mouthbreathers: “they couldn’t even beat the spread against our worst team in a decade derp derp.” But uhm we kinda did beat the spread.
Also, there is no doubt in mind we beat msu if we played them today. The improvement from week 1 – when brian literally lol’ed a poster for suggesting we win 10 – to now is unfathomable.

im not scared of urban at all - bring him on - but the fact that ohio can blatantly cheat for a decade, get their "legendary" coach fired, and then (at least on paper) find a coaching upgrade is...annoying. ohio is the poster child now for the benefits of not playing by the rules - huge upside, no risk. what a joke.

|2 years 17 weeks ago||I think its exactly because||
I think its exactly because iowa ruined gopherquest that we lost to them. We all know iowa is not as bad as that Minnesota team but because they lost against minny their season was on the line – they were going to give everything they had against us (as evidenced by ferentz’s riverboatgambler impression). Iowa losing to minny made me more nervous for that game.
Anyways, I think this team will bounce back. We still have a lot to play for, even if it wont be a b1g championship. This game will be something like san diego state – ie comfortable score but it feels close. We will win by +/- 13 pts.

it just seems like people want to complain about all things dave brandon, when in reality we were all pretty excted when he scheduled the game a year ago.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||and...||
To respond to my own post. Brian complains about the Alabama game next year? I don’t get it, we’re mad about scheduling a mac cupcake or we're mad about scheduling a real opponent?
anyways I dug up what he said originally about the game, and the only hesitation he had then was that the game was in dallas, and not a home and home:
This comes with a set of crazy conflicting emotions. Hurray awesome nonconference game, boo that it's in fricking Dallas in a corporate death star of an NFL stadium and not a home-and-home in Ann Arbor and Tuscaloosa. I guess that's what it takes for a lot of actual nonconference games to get done these days, but awesomeness of trip to Dallas to see M play 'Bama <<<<<< awesomeness of M-Bama home-and-home. On the other hand, awesomeness of M-Bama Dallas >>>>>>> awesomeness of M-BGSU anywhere.
WHY ALL THIS COMPLAINING NOW?
|2 years 17 weeks ago||man||
Sometimes brian confuses me. When talking about what borges can do about creating downfield passing for denard he argues that borges should construct the passing to create people downfield who are “witheringly wide-open”… moments after saying that denard missing a witheringly wide-open roundtree downfield is just because “denard doesn’t have that in the wheelhouse.”

But we haven’t collapsed yet. That’s the point I was making. We have one very winnable game IME at Illinois, and two games at home against flawed opponents. to say that the “avoiding a second half collapse” meme is “isn't looking so hot” after one game that came down to the final 2 seconds on the road in a hostile environment is completely jumping the gun and totally reactionary.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||to answer your question...||
I never was on the illini bandwagon. They’ve beaten Arizona state at home and…that’s about it. I watched them scrape by western, and if I remember correctly, had to have some furious rally to stave off northwestern. (and of course, lost to purdue). Their offense looked worse than ours against psu and osu, and memorial stadium to me isn’t as intimidating as kinnick. Then there is always the ron zook factor. So yes, I thought we had a better chance against Illinois then against iowa.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||"Good thing we avoided that||
"Good thing we avoided that second-half collapse thanks to the toughy tough toughness instilled by Brady Hoke. Like the second-half adjustments, that meme isn't looking so hot. At least the second-half thing had something more than a win over Purdue arguing for it."
Jesus, this is as reactionary as the MGoBoard – one loss and now we’ve collapsed again? Tell me, what is a guaranteed loss remaining on our schedule? A ron zook Illinois team who lost to purdue? A Nebraska team who just lost to northwestern at home? Or an osu team who eeked out the perennial powerhouse that is Indiana, also at home, who will bring a freshmen quarterback to the big house?
before iowa lost to Minnesota I thought this was going to be the hardest of our remaining four games because of kinnick stadium and the fact that very few big ten teams have played well on the road. Iowa losing to Minnesota made this game that much tougher because iowa was playing for their big10 lives – we were going to get their best kamikaze impression, as we saw when ferentz went all river boat gambler on us.
There were a lot of factors working against us on Saturday – some of which were external and some of which were internal (the offense) – but to say we’re on a sinking boat like the last two years after one game is so fickle I would expect it from randommgoblog user who types in CAPS and argues for DEVIN GARDNERRER!)@!)###!
I still think there are at least two wins left on the schedule and 9-3 to me does not equal “second half collapse”.

Re Hoke’s injury report: chengelis tweeted that Hoke said in his presser that Lewan’s ankle/knee is “fine.” Which probably means Lewan’s whole leg is about to fall off, if it hasn’t already.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||Before Shaffer is fired, RR||
Before Shaffer is fired, RR says he is going to evaluate all the defensive coaches and if I remember correctly, one or two were in very hot water. Later he says that Shaffer was the only one that he, RR, did not meet before he was hired. (I think it paints the picture that defensive problems were on Shaffer.) And then he is fired and GERG comes in without a single mention (I believe) of the month long coaching search or GERG’s previous crater at Syracuse. As the book progresses (I’m not done yet) there is talk about a growing friction between GERG and RR (notably in personnel decisions) and how bad the defense is but there is no real analysis as to how it got that bad.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||Completely Agree. And as I||
Completely Agree. And as I mentioned in another thread, the book seems so focused on a narrative that shady dealings brought down RR that it neglects most of RR’s poor football decisions. Bacon does address the blundered press conferences but only to the extent that it brought on more heap from the outside. What he does not address, however, is what I thought was the biggest mistake in the RR era: firing Shaffer and bringing in GERG. All of a sudden in the book,Schaffer kind of disappears and GERG is in his place – without any mention of what that caused. The bottom line is this: if RR could have cobbled together a semblance of a defensive staff, he would have been here today, regardless of the muffed coaching search, the WVU drama, the negative press, the “cockroaches.” He couldn’t do that because he brought in Shaffer, fired him, brought in GERG, and eventually forced him into 3-3-5 with defensive coaching assistants that were inept at best. This latter part is hardly mentioned in Bacon’s book, which to me seems like a glaring omission.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||I would agree with this||
I would agree with this assessment in that the book seems like its slanted towards RR (I am about 250 pages and 1.5 seasons in). Up to this point, Bacon glances over the defensive incompetence and doesn’t attribute any of that to RR. He merely talks about Shaffer being fired as if it was his fault and his fault alone (and leaves out anything regarding the Purdue 08 switch to the 3-3-5, other than some offhanded comment that it “didn’t work.”) And he also fails to mention the other muffed coaching search – the one that turned up GERG (if you remember, we were without a defensive coordinator for over a month during the thick of recruiting which resulted in Syracuses’ trash). I read beforehand that RR and his people were very upset about the book, thus far, I don’t see why they would be…
EDIT: I bring up the Shaffer bit in that it seems to me, as an outsider, this was the biggest fatal decision in RR’s tenure. Firing Shaffer, who turned out to be a decent to good coach, and bringing in GERG, set in motion the events which caused the worst defense in Michigan history. If we just had a semblance of competency from the defensive staff, no doubt RR would be here. And in the book, there isn’t as much as a mention of the events behind it – Schaffer kind of leaves and GERG just sort of appears.

to me was the funniest part of the book, especially because, if my memory serves me, it was initiated and led by mgoblog viewers (of course). i seem to recall a particularly funny comment: "rosenberg's war as they knew it gave me herpes."

about half the book. regardless of that, my guess is that when the time comes to honor lloyd at the big house he's still going to get the loudest standing ovation to date.

but I feel like state has consistently taken advantage of it more so than any other team we have played in three years.

ugh I can't read these anymore. so frustrating to think about what could have been if we made just a few simple adjustments.
I agree with a lot of other comments though...it seems blatantly obvious that there has to be something we are missing, right? how could borges not adjust to this? and how come its always state who is able to exploit this? this has happened for three years now...why does it seem like dantonio is the only one who knows this?

and as we speak, illinois is losing to wmu at half - this was the same illinois team that many were calling the 3rd best team in the B1G. we definitly have a giant wart - the passing game - but name one team without a giant deficiency (besides Wisc, who we dont play)? if our defense plays like they did today we will be in every game...comibne that with denard's legs and you have a dangerous combo.
but with that all being said...ugh, the passing game.
