We played Wisconsin Colorado and Penn State in the start of the season - not exactly cupcakes. We also played Maryland in November - not exactly the start of the season either.
Iowa isn't exactly a world beater, we lost to them. And almost lost to Indiana - once again, not a world beater by any stretch. The argument that we played better teams at the end of the year doesn't necessarily hold water. It seems like we just faded a bit down the stretch...
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Come on man||
This seems like the classic backup qb syndrome. At one point this year harbaugh mentioned speight as a possible heisman contender and no one laughed him out of the room. I'm not saying speight is the answer but pining the seasons failure on him seems rather revisionist
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Well, no.||
And this is getting off topic but he pooped gold with what we thought was going to be his success here:
The prognosis now is much better than it was in January. Hoke will be able to shovel early missteps onto Rodriguez's grave—already the tallest mountain east of the Rockies—and ride out the awkward transition from the spread, at which point he'll have a roster full of guys who are qualified, a career record worlds better than Rodriguez's, and a talent advantage over his division opponents. From there it's a matter of grabbing that goddamn win over Ohio State and seeing what happens. It's hard for me to think we'll be as good as spread terror du jour in any particular year, but let's whine about that bridge when we get to it.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||No wonder Mike Scott Hated you||
Don't think he's comparing the coaching acumen of Brady hoke and Jim harbaugh as much as he is making a statement. At one point on this blog there was a tag that said "Brady Hoke Poops Gold." We loved Brady too at one point...

But TCU doesn't have the ability to draw in the eyeballs that Michigan does. Agree with it or not, the CFP is still a "show" and Michigan gets ratings. Make no mistake, the committee raised an eyebrow at the 10.4 rating from Saturday...

if it matters who wins Wisc vs PSU as much as the type of game it is.
People have fickle minds and tend to overreact to what is in front of their face RIGHT NOW. If Wisc and PSU play a good fundamentally sound, solid football game that is back and forth until the end then I think the winner goes regardless who that winner is. Conversely, if one team absolutely blows out the other, I think that winner goes, too.
What we need is an ugly, turnover-prone poopfest, with both teams making mistakes, missing extra points, having lots of flags while remaining relatively close on the scoreboard. It needs to be an ugly enough game that the consensus is that these are two mediocre teams that happen to be playing in the championship game due to scheduling quirks and happenstance more so than talent.
(This is, of course, assuming one of Clemson/Washington loses).
The rooting interest, regardless of rankings tonight: Clemson/Wash loss, with an ugly and non-memorable B1G Championship game.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Wishful||
Thinking but this is the same logic I'm hanging my hat on. That fat 10.4 rating from yesterday is the second highest rated college football game EVER - CFP absolutely wants that market.
Problem is what's the path to even give the CFP the option to get us there? UW and/or a Clemson must lose, certainly, but I also think the BIG champion has to get frozen out - no way they take three teams from one conference.

Recruiting is all about relationships - not just the players but the coaches, the school, the community etc. Why is it that Urban Meyer had to go meet with Thomas Wilcher immediately after the Mike Weber situation? Beacuse if he didnt, no way was a kid from Cass Tech ever going to go to Ohio State again.
This recruiting strategy may never hurt us. Or, conversely, it may keep us from the five star kid down the line who chooses a rival.
Hard to say, but it certainly doesnt seem like the best strategy when they could instead be upfront with the commitable-ness of the offer....
|1 year 1 week ago||Predictable||
When was the last time this team played a complete game against a team with a pulse?
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Now we can finally put this to rest||
Since 2001 (when RR started at WVU) he's had - count them - eight seasons of 5 or more losses verus six seasons of four or less. So, in his career he's had more dissapointing - meh seasons than "good" seasons. This is across nearly a decade and a half of coaching in three different conferences.
So yeah, RR is a decent-good coach, but he certainly isn't elite. And now that we have an elite coach, hopefully this is all water under the bridge.
(For reference, over the same span, Meyer has had one 5 loss season.)
|1 year 3 weeks ago||I've had||
This conversation with friends recently as it seems like our lack of recruiting success is due to our so called "cleanliness." And I'm not sure what side I come down on now. When we unearthed some diamonds like trey and nik, it was easy to stand on our morals. But today.... Today it's looking like that 2-3 year run could have been more of anomaly then we all want to admit.
Anyways I will say this: you don't play games with "clean" or "dirty" stamped on your forehead and clinging to this notion that basically is "oh well we do it the Right way," seems a bit hollow when your rivals are playing in final fours and you're sitting at home....
|1 year 5 weeks ago||Yes. This.||
While DUI is more "dangerous" to society as a whole, I think school adminstration would view physcial altercation with a student athlete as being far more damaging then driving while intoxicated.
Case in point: this whole convesration. No one said "...but he has DUI..." when Harbaugh was hired.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||I would||
argue that a "DUI" and "striking a student" aren't very comparable.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||The trouble||
with the Walton thing is that we didn't look any better against Xavier and Uconn - the games he played against good teams.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||I think||
Therein lies the problem- walk ons and small power forwards aren't a recipe for continual success, and if the reinforcements don't come then your left hoping that you can keep unearthing diamonds in the rough.
I agree it's too early - today - to panic, but more and more it's looking like the 2012 run is the anomaly and not, as we thought, the beginning of a foundation...

|1 year 7 weeks ago||this||
exactly. Those who are blindly predicting year 3 when we take off should take a look at the two deep and what we lose in 2017. Next year is a critical year where we need to do well enough to keep positive momentum knowing that we may have to rebuild in 2017. trouble with next year is that schedule though...
|1 year 7 weeks ago||OSU||
hasn't lit up anyone the way we were beaten on Saturday. And they lost to a team that we took to the wire. I won't argue that OSU isn't more talented than we are, but the disparity in talent does not account for the 30 point drubbing.
|1 year 7 weeks ago||talent||
"That is not a talent issue, unless you think the rest of the season was a mirage."
Thank you brian for pointing this out. After the game alot of people were talking about how we don't have the "talent" to hang with OSU yet. I think thats lazy analysis. We had the talent to go toe-to-toe with MSU and we have upperclass 4 and 5 stars starting at nearly every spot. Maybe this is arguing semantics, but I certainly don't think "talent" is the issue and to argue that point obfuscates what I think was the real problem on Saturday - we have the talent, we just got outcoached.
I thought this team would finish 10-2, so 9-3 with one top 25 victory and an 0-2 record against our rivals feels a bit dissapointing. I would also argue that those predicting 8-4 have to be a bit dissapointed too if none of those 8 victories came against either MSU or OSU. It was an OK year, no doubt, certainly better than any year in the past decade save 2011, but the way in which it ended will cast a negative light throughout the offseason.
2016 will be huge for this program. We have tons of returning talent that will be seniors, but we play our hardest two games on the road and break in a new QB.
|1 year 9 weeks ago||not just||

think we'll be on the oustide looking in for the playoff BUT the first committee poll last year had OSU #16...
so....you never know.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||meh||
this is so hypothetical but ill play along -
i think the playoff committee could easily overlook our flukey lost to MSU, and if we beat OSU convincingly (14+ points) - you could see a path to us being ranked ahead of both MSU and OSU. but like i said - all hypothetical. theres still a half of season of football to play, but i certainly dont think we're out of the BIG title contention at all.
edit - also dont overlook the end of the season loss-factor, where the committee may put more stock into recent losses versus those earlier in the year. obviously that would also help us in this hypothetical osu/msu/UM round robin scenario.

|2 years 2 weeks ago||meyer / nfl - question||
brian makes an interesting point that urban wouldnt be attractive to the NFL because of the type of offense he runs. Is this still the case today? Chip Kelly, Russell Wilson, and Colin Kaepernick (and I guess Andrew Luck, RGIII circa 2012, and maybe the future NFL Marcus Mariotta) are showing that the league can move a bit towards spread elements with more mobile QBs.
Look at what he did this year getting a third string QB to play for a national title. Look at Arizona Cardinals, a good team that was garbage after their first string QB went out. Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, and Jim Harbaugh have dispelled the notion that college coaches can't work out in the NFL - I wonder if a bottom feeder team would take a chance on a guy like Urban Meyer? If i am an NFL GM and my options are some re-tread or Urban Meyer, you would have to at least consider Urban, no?
|2 years 4 weeks ago||Pitt||
have close ties to that place. Them firing wannestach was a perfect example of "grass is greener" and now this is what, their 5th coach in 4 years? I think this is a good hire but it's still a barren wasteland over there, and basically has been ever since they moved into Steelers' stadium. It's an nfl town playing college ball in an nfl stadium and there is no school in America that gets less support from their students.
|2 years 4 weeks ago||Yep -||
I liked Nuss. Thought he was going to do well here. At the start of the season I argued that between Mattison and Nuss, we had (at the very least) the top3 tandem of coodinators in the conference. Not sure how things went so far south, but that is neither here nor there.
What this just makes official, as if it wasn't already known, we'll have another OC - 3 in 3 years - for our young offense. Hopefullly Harbaugh (if it is Harbaugh) can muster up some quick returns, or we're looking at another season of offensive despair.

with your assestment a bit more, especially this part:
His best win in 5 years was 8-5 Florida. His 2nd and 3rd best wins were rivalry games vs decent, not great Ole Miss in year 1 and year 5. I cannot find a 4th best win in his first 5 years - it would be between Rice in a bowl and UM in a bowl. So in 64 (including 4 bowls) opportunities in 5 years I am at a loss to find a 4th quality win.
Mullen hasn't beaten anyone, really, and has padded his W/L total with the Troys and Alcorn States of the world. And fine, you want to say he's at the Purdue of the SEC. I get that, but we're not asking him to win the SEC Title Game - I just want to see an upset or two that proves he can get over that hump; merely showing up and losing close doesn't count.

Okay Ace - Michigan didn't pony up for Casteel - even assuming you're right, the only reasonable option to that was to hire Greg Robinson and force him to run a 3-3-5? with your assetment re the students. The rest of the stadium was never full, but student section was completely empty the entire game. Empty like 80 rows empty, as opposed to the 10 seats in front of me empty. Thats a mischaracterization to say "an awful lot" of everyone left at halftime. All the students left, most of the crowd stayed until the start of the 4th.
And this after the students marched to fire Brandon, get him fired, and then don't bother to show up to a 3:30 game? Fine. The team sucks. But you're a student. You literally have nothing to do on Saturday but drink.

|2 years 12 weeks ago||This should be a productive conversation||

|2 years 13 weeks ago||A story of another epic beatdown in EL||
In January 2011 a Michigan team was going to EL in what everyone considered to be a bloodbath. The team was, at that point, 11-9 with wins mainly against cupcakes like North Carolina Central and Bryant University. They were 1-7 in the BIG, and on a 6 game losing streak. The coach, in his 4th year, was 57-62 at Michigan. He had gone to the big Tourney two years earlier, but most considered that to be a fluke. MSU bros painted their chest – 1181 – the amount of days since Michigan had last beaten state in football or basketball.
It was going to be ugly…
…until it wasn’t. Until an “aneurysm of leadership” propelled this team to victory, to an improbable 4th place finish in the BIG, another invite to the tournament, and set the stage for the machine that is Michigan Basketball today.
What we have now wasn’t even a possibility on that cold winter January evening. Beliein and the basketball team, left for dead in 2011, is now a perennial powerhouse; putting six players in the NBA since that night, with more almost assuredly on the way. All while rampaging through the B1G (the toughest conference in America, mind you) and getting within inches of a terrible block call from winning the whole damn thing.
And the impetus for all of it can be traced directly from that January night in EL.
It only takes one game to change the course of a season, a coach, a program.
Go Blue – beat State.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||3/9||
i stand corrected. didnt think to count the guys and just based my number off brian's.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||regarding the first mailbag question||
why are we not counting matt wile in the calculation? he was a solid punter when hagerup went out last year. his field goal percentage isn't all that great, but its not gibbins-freshmen-year level terrible either. hes a solid kicker who just beat PSU for us. seems to me it should be 3/8, and maybe a 3/7 if you want to give antonio poole an "incomplete." (not sure a medical injury should count one way or the other)
thats not great, i guess, (though i would be curious to see the washout rate for recruits) but it doesnt seem to move my needle one way or the other.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Then why||
when he ultimately left he took a paycut to goto Arizona?
Casteel was born in WVA and coached there since 2001, by all accounts his family loves it in Wva (I think they may still live there...), and he was next in line to be the headcoach...all this before Holgo came.
This is what Casteel said after leaving WVU:
There is no evidence to suggest that Casteel would have come to Michigan no matter the salary. None. Everyone saying anything to the contrary is basing their opinion on speculation.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Casteel||
took a pay cut to goto Arizona. But, by all means, keep living in your fantasy world that it was the lack of money that kept him from Michigan.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Okay -||
well apart from that aforementioned Purdue game (because lets just ignore data points that dont prove your point...) Brian does a UFR of every game. A simple google search can bring up some relevant games where we spent the majority of the game in a 3-3-5 stack: 2010 Wisconsin and 2010 Penn State. I only bring up those games because that seemed to be about when the wheels were coming off. I am sure if I spent more than 30 seconds looking I could bring up more examples as well.
So...yeah, you're wrong.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Everyone||
always says that we would have gotten Casteel if it wasnt for the money, though I have never seen anything besides blog posts confirm the voracity of this story. By all accounts Casteel loved WVU and he was next in line for the head coaching gig when RR left. There is just no evidence that says Casteel was coming if he got more money - none.
What DID happen was that Holgo forced out Casteel : up until a week before Casteel left for Arizona (took a paycut to goto Arizona, actually) he said that he "wanted to come back to WVU."
All this talk that if we just ponied up a few thousand extra dollars we would have Casteel and be winning championships is just bullshit, and it ignores the fact that RR still hired a really fuckin shitty coach in Greg Robinson. There is one reason why RR isnt here today and thats his stupid defense - nothing to do with money, Lloyd Carr, factions, his offense, anything. He hired Greg, he forced him to run a 3-3-5 with no experience, and Michigan tanked. End of story.
But by all means, lets keep re-writing history. Everyone wanted him gone - yes, even Brian.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||so||
after scouring all coaching avenues for literally every feasable name, we're left with basically harbaugh, miles, and mullen. one may never leave the NFL, another is getting old and may never leave LSU, and the third was on the hot seat at Miss. ...this seems like it may not end well.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||I wonder||
how the shittiness of this list changes the equation re firing Hoke. If he can somehow salvage this season (big *if* caveats apply), does a new AD take a look at the potential coaching candidates and say "fuggit - I'm not risking MY ass on these guys."

|2 years 16 weeks ago||According to who -||
Because according to the NCAA's stats, Michigan gave up 4.93 yards per play and 320 yards per game while Arizona gave up 5.98 yards per play and nearly 500 yards a game.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||This type||
of comment is just stupid and selective. You're watching the game - did you ignore the stat that arizona was something like #90 in yards allowed per game? They played defense for one quarter Jesus that doesn't erase the three years of embarrassment here
|2 years 16 weeks ago||When did||
the national media become the arbiter of reasonable and sound opinions?
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Then what is he talking about?||
The concussion or the ankle injury. People play on bum ankles all the damn time - the outrage is over the concussion, which at the point that Shane came back into the game is so clearly not about reps (or desperation to get reps, if what you imply is correct).
|2 years 16 weeks ago||What does that have to do with the concussion incident?||
Getting reps for Shane at that point is clearly not a factor - Morris was coming in for one play to hand off so DG could get back into the game.
Knowing what I know about the MSM media, this Schnell guy probably had no context of the game, saw the headlines "Hoke Leaves Starter QB in Game Despite Concussion," and sounded off.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||What?||
What is "Schnell" getting at with this quote:
I’m not going to accuse a coach of knowingly putting a player in danger, but I will say this: People in charge do some desperate things when they think they’re close to losing their jobs.
I don't get this at all? Is he suggesting Hoke left Shane in the game because he was desperate for a win, and Shane presented the best option to do so (regardless of whether he was injured)? Because that's what it seems like, and if so, the author has no idea what the hell he is talking about.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||I agree with some of this||
Not sure how Paul Schmidt has avoided any criticism thus far. He spoke to Shane when he came off the field - a concussion isn't like cancer, there are visible symptoms that should be obvious to a trainer with three decades of experience.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Meh||
Sam is a professional in every sense of the word. He is measured, reasonable, and avoids HOTTAKES. His opinion may be in the minority on this blog, but I think that reflects more on the people here as opposed to Sam just wanting to "toe the company line."
|2 years 16 weeks ago||He ends it||
by saying that he supports Hoke.
"My man Brady I stand by you...and the real OGs, the real Michigan people, we riding with you."
Sam Webb then says "well stated."
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Assuming||
both Hoke and DB are fired, how are their buyouts going to affect us dumping piles of cash in Harbaugh's driveway?
|2 years 16 weeks ago||He has||
no head coaching experience, and apart from one year at Florida in 2010, hasn't been in the college ranks for over a decade.
Not saying I hate the choice, but there are giant questions with this one.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||And||
we've come full circle.
We're in the bizarro RR years, where defense is good and the offense is comically bad; now its the fans hate the coach and the ex-players support him. Seems to me the Athletic Department isnt the only thing broken these days...
|2 years 16 weeks ago||I agree with this||
RR is not responsible for the actions of this team some 4 years after his firing and I'm not sure why he is even being brought into this.
But for the record, I think it is being brought up because Brian has referenced the RR/Denard concssion incident a few times to suggest that he (RR) cared for his players more so than Hoke.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||But he was checked out||
there are pictures of him talking to the trainer...
Now it's entirely possible a trainer of three decades couldn't tell that a kid was visibly knocked out and ignored a potential head injury but... That doesn't seem likely.
And let's not pretend that there has never been a violent hit where the person is fine afterwards. Conversely, there are plenty of innocuous hits that knock people out. My point is we can sit here all we want and watch the hit on a replay gif and make arm chair determinations that Shane was knocked out cold... Or we could think that a medical professional with decades of experience could talk to Shane and Adequately perform their job.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||In response||
tp the OP's question:
Mark Dantonio literally played someone who died on the field and justified it by saying he had the "wind knocked out of him." And, on top of that, recruiting improved at State.
Where was the indignation over that? Oh right, there wasn't because MD was winning games.
Link? Link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AZsok00Pio
|2 years 16 weeks ago||THIS IS NOT MICHIGAN||
We gotta stop living in the past.....except when we need to bring up RR in every debate about our current staff.
While we're on the topic of past discussions on head injuries, anyone going to bring up Hoke leaving out Lewan the entire second half at PSU last year? If RR taking Denard out of a game is a fair discussion point (apart from mentioning it above, Brian tweeted about this after the Minny game), then we should also acknowledge Hoke's history on the matter as well. (If I remember correctly, Desmond Morgan was also left out of the Iowa game because of a potential head injury).
Anyways, I am going to go out on a limb and say this whole concussion thing wouldn't be an issue if Hoke is coming off a BCS bowl season and is sitting in the top #10 at 5-0. But he's not, so now everything becomes a fireable offense.
At this point, Hoke's coaching record is not defendable, but I am also not sitting here thinking hes a danger to his team, especially given his past record on players with head injuries.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||In retrospect||
how lucky are we NOT to be playing MSU or OSU at home? Those games could have been 75% MSU/OSU fans....
|2 years 17 weeks ago||May also||
be worth mentioning that Miss St was one Hail Mary away from blowing an 18 point lead with just over 2 minutes to play. Granted - they won the game - but there was enough derp in a signature win to give pause.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||That's me!||
I am such an internet tough guy.
And I guess I missed the memo that stipulated the amount of "standing one has to comment" on a program is directly related to the amount of money donated. We should note that on the blog so I can make sure in the future to avoid any comments made by the proletariat.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Re Dan Mullen||
He was also something like 2-21 against teams ranked in the top 25 before saturday night. And Miss St. blogs were openly debating whether or not he should be fired after last year. The fact that his name is cropping up as a possible replacement seems to be overexcitement to the fact that his team just beat LSU
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Oh Good||
So now we're crediting RR with a 12-1 season that year.
I said this in another thread about people like you: but if you hate Michigan so much, why the fuck do you even watch? And not just watch, but you get so bothered that you feel the need to post 12,257 (give or take) times on a Michigan blog? If you love RR, just root for Arizona.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Give it a rest||
RR wasn't here for what would have been his fourth year. That 11-2 record doesn't count for him; it does not compare at all to Harbaugh's fourth year.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||I will||
Never understand why people who profess to be michigan fans openly hate the team so much.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Yawn||
Color me skeptical . The dude clearly is fishing for page hits. In the same article he says :
If either one of these gentlemen is hired, the road to a Harbaugh gets much more probable. Both Harbaugh brothers and Miles would take the Michigan job under the stewardship of Bates or Manuel, none of them would come to Michigan under Brandon, so change is imminent.
Both harbaughs and miles!! We don't just get one of them, we get all three! Also in the sme article he says john gruden is looking for homes in Ann Arbor, because he loves bates and Manuel too.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||BREAKING NEWS||
This just in: Football coach loses a handful of games over the course of a decade career; fans bitch about it a decade later.
|2 years 18 weeks ago||Nuss||
was more speculative based on his prior stops. The ND game wasn't good, but one game does not change an entire career arc. And who has a better offensive track record in the B1G right now? Maybe OSU? Maybe Neb? And if you tell me Jim Bollman at MSU, well, I can point you to some OSU blogs that may disagree...
|2 years 18 weeks ago||I agree with this||
I would also say in order to be a succesful CEO type coach you need to surround yourself with good coordinators. Switching Borges (a mixed record at best) with Nuss (up-and-coming young guy whose been sucessful everywhere he's coached) really should right the ship on the one side of the ball in which we weren't "making plays."
And in all honesty, I know Narduzzi is the best coordinator in the B1G, but how many teams have a better pair of coordinators than we do? Mattison and Nuss may be in the top three in the B1G at their respective positions - thats a good foundation to build from, while Brady handles the CEO duties.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||As Greg Dooley||
From mvictors will say after every loss:
@MVictors: Reminder to WTKA callers, pls rattle off your fandom credentials b4 your rant (e.g., yrs season tix holder, watching team since 19XX, etc.)
So now we know where you, unicycle firefly, fit into the grand scheme of things. Thanks for your opinion and the money you spend on the university will surely make your opinion heard in the athletic department. Also we minions on the mgoblog will be sure to follow your lead.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||PSU||
should be really feeling the scholarship crunch this year. Their recievers won't be at the same level as NDs.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||Then freak out at the end of the season?||
Or at least wait until half way through if it becomes apparent that the wheels have fallen off. I just dont understand the notion of getting this stressed this soon over results that are still unknown. Especially, as I mentioned, when we have a perfect indicator from just last year that 2 games does not make a season.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||we're||
older and have a new offensive coordinator, which was like 95% of the problem last year.
|2 years 19 weeks ago||last year||
after the Notre Dame game we looked like national championship contenders, DG was on track to be in NYC for the heisman award ceremony, and brian and ace were literally laughing at MSU in the podcast.
with that being said, can we just wait to see what happens until, oh i dont know, more than two games into the season??
|2 years 19 weeks ago||Sparty will beat the shit out of them||
Interesting. They don't play notre dame this year...I know that sparty is a bunch of thugs but I don't think they are going to get in a massive fight with the notre dame team.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Any way tickets||
Will drop below the 365$ there going for now on stub hub?
|2 years 28 weeks ago||brian||
please dont leave for four years!
i know i am not alone in that i would love to keep up with the USMNT players you've mentioned, especially during some of the bigger tournaments that are on the docket before russia 2018. i've followed a few USMNT blogs but none compare to what you're put out during this world cup run.
|2 years 29 weeks ago||how would you have liked||
to have brought on LD instead of wondo at the end of yesterdays game? someone who had been there before, a finisher, composed, etc. not saying he would have made the difference (i think the injury to altidore hurt more than LD not being on the team) but we really missed his spark.
to brians main point, i am conflicted this morning. very proud of the team and ill continue to support them but i just cant come away thinking - what others have mentioned - that we're getting closer to the end goal. we're a good team - top 10 maybe - but there is a huge gap between elite and good, and we're not quite closing it. but thats a conversation for another day...
|2 years 29 weeks ago||National team soccer||
Similar to college sports in a way--- a player may be im his prime but you may never see him suit up for your team again. Timmy just had his best game in a us jersey, but more likely than not we won't see him don the colors again...(at least certainly not in another World Cup)
|2 years 30 weeks ago||All things considered||
Our corner of the bracket isn't as dominating as it could be. Argentina is the best team (?) and they haven't looked great at all. I would take our theoretical route into the semis over any other team, especially second place teams.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||brad davis||
starting too is even more WTF
|2 years 30 weeks ago||look||
at that screenschot posted above. there are 6 american defenders level with 3 portugal attackers. and, without rewatching the goal (because i cant bring myself to do that), i think there was only one portugal attacker in the box to our 3 or 4 defenders.
we were not compressed up the field, we had numbers back to defend. your audible oh noes was probably more a result of the time on the clock as opposed to any serious threat. bradley shouldnt have turned it over - he shoulders a % of the blame, sure - but this is a play that could have and shoud have easily been defended.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||also||
the extra day of rest, not to mention playing in manaus, is going to make ghana much more fresh. that, along with portugals predisposition of being mentally weak, i dont see us getting the result from ghana that we want -- which means we HAVE to at least tie...one of the best teams in the tournament...
i dont think it can be understated what that last goal may have cost us.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||not the same||
there are literally hundreds of turnovers in soccer. almost all goals in the history of goals are caused because one team turned over the ball somewhere on the pitch. football turnovers are rare - thats why its tracked.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||thanks||
for your optimistic take on our chances, brian, but i cant but help feeling a bit nervous at the prospect that portugal has all but given up (see their lack of emotion on the tying goal). with portugal having effectively nothing to play for and ghana needing a big win, i can see gahana steamrolling a team that is well-known as being mentally weak.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||This is||
He group stage... There are no ties in the next rounds...
And sure there are ties, but you can't exactly sit here and tell me the regular season for basketball, baseball, or hockey are all that thrilling, regardless of ties.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||Yes||
Isn't this what they called against Brian mcbride back in 2002?
|2 years 30 weeks ago||Also||
Where we really miss LD. No one is talking about brining in brad Davis....
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Bedoya||
Was great tonight. Loved what I've seen from him this WC cycle.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||The us||
Is better than what they are showing. And despite everything Ghana has had what 2 real chances? Whether you agree or not US is in defend first, what's killing them is Bradley's poor play tonight.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Honest||
Have you watched all the games?
|2 years 31 weeks ago||first half||
the early goal helped the US play exactly how they want: make ghana put together passes to score, take your chances on the counterattack, and play defense. unfortunately, the US passes were not crisp at all, and you didnt see much counterattack. apart from a couple 1/2 chances from ghana it worked, but the lazy US passes on the counterattack made it seem worse than what it was.
the jozy injury is a huge kick in the nuts. i like aron, but i dont think hes a starting world cup striker.
what do we see in the second half? would love to push the tempo a bit more - im not confident in our defense pitching a shutout - but we need michael bradley to take charge.
|2 years 33 weeks ago||THANK YOU BRIAN||
i wasnt the only one refreshing mgoblog all day yesterday waiting for this write up instead of offseason michigan news, right?
|2 years 33 weeks ago||yes,||
it is. i noticed that during a live viewing. THERE is your Michigan reference, MGOBRONCO.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||I've really liked||
what i've seen out of Johannsson. I thought going into the game last night, Wondo would be the first striker off the bench. But now, I really hope he's been passed by Aron.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||i thought davis was meh||
im not one to get excited about "should have drawn a penalty" - just because a player falls in the box doesn't mean hes playing well. the cross was great, but i stlil come away thinking that goal was more perfect finishing / terrible marking than anything that davis did.
fair or not, anything davis does moving forward will be compared to what LD could have done - and last night i didnt go away thinking that davis outplayed hypothetical LD.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||And that's the difference||
And that's the difference between a finisher and wondolowski...
|2 years 34 weeks ago||Bradley||
Touch has been off all night.
Gonzo looks a step slow...against Azerbijan...I wonder if he's a candidate to be left off for injury.
Brad Davis... Still confused about that one.
Jones hasn't looked bad as a defensive mid. If he can stay disciplined that's a huge upgrade in athleticism.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||He||
May not start but he will get a run at the World Cup-- he's the first guy off the bench up top.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||Creates||
... but doesn't score....
Snark aside wondo had two uncontested point blank headers. One was a nice save, the other was right to the keeper. He needed to have put one of those in the back of the net...
|2 years 35 weeks ago||i was i had your optimism||
but there is no way i see hypothetical matchup between ballon d'or winner ronaldo and 18 year old mls defender Yedlin being anything but doom.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||i'm no recruitnik||
and not to be "that guy" (who says we don't really want em after they commit elsewhere), but im curious to know how commitable is this offer to tyriq thompson. he's ranked as a generic three star recruit. sure, MSU has made a living off these players, but its not exactly jabrill peppers here either.
|2 years 39 weeks ago||F*ck the NCAA||
What a cluster. Or as Dan wetzel tweeted out "that a player could fail one drug test and be suspended for a year is why a union is needed." Couldn't agree more ...
Feel bad for Mitch but also come away thinking more highly of him from this article. It didn't necessarily work out for him in Ann Arbor but I'll always look back positively on his time here. Best of luck - here's hoping he blows up during the NBA combine and goes in the first round
|2 years 39 weeks ago||wow||
just clicked that link and didnt realize that larry brown at SMU got himself the second highest rated recruit in the country after apparently getting a five star last year. good for him.
|2 years 40 weeks ago||meh||
i have to disagree with you here. i thought the defender slowed down for the ball after he pushed bale out of bounds. and pinto is a backup goalie for a reason. he let an easy goal in early in the game and comes out with his legs wayyy to open. there was no way he wasn't getting nutmegged.
bale, to his credit, didnt stop, but this is more of a case of poor defense and goal keeping versus an "insane" goal. to put it another way, sometimes a guy just makes the shot - nothing can be done about that (a la harrison's three over levert). other times, it feels like you've given the shot up. as a barca fan, this was way more the latter.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||working from home today...||
which means working in the backyard under the umbrella.
will avoid golf all weekend -- my hatred of that sport is probably what many of you feel for soccer. i just dont get it. "lets watch people hit a tiny ball and then walk"
|2 years 41 weeks ago||of course||
no one is shocked, but the article is a pretty good read and i am sure that some of it (most of it?) can apply to every big-time school (including here).
aside from the scandelous nature of the article, i thought this was an interesting tidbit of recruiting information:
Some coaches encourage players to visit other campuses to recruit other players.
maybe that should make us think twice when heavy ohio-lean so-and-so comes to visit (or vice versa).
|2 years 43 weeks ago||But||
Why is this the straw that broke the camels back? Why not the conference expansion, B1G shameless expansion of Rutgers and Maryland, espn's billion dollar deal with the sec, the longhorn network, the AT&T rose bowl presented by Visio and chick fil a, etc etc?
This was the naturally progression when the money got out of hand disproportionatly to benefit a handful of athletic departments. If you say college athletics are now ruined I would say it was heading down that path for a long time...
|2 years 43 weeks ago||Confused||
By the uproar over this. There was a story like two days ago that ohio state ad gene smith got a 20k raise for an ohio state wrestler winning some title. Athletic departments literally have money coming out of their ears at some of these big schools. It's time that students get a bit more of the pie than what they have been offered.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Damn||
That block if called correctly could have given us a national title. Thanks for the reminder...
|2 years 44 weeks ago||has anyone||
gotten more mileage out of a 12 point game than della valla did after nebraska? the way every announcer has talked about him since that game you would think hes destined for the an NBA lottery pick at the end of the year....
|2 years 44 weeks ago||why does||
louisville to me seem like a paper tiger? i have them going to the final four right now but i think im falling for the hype. why cant a senior-laden saint louis team knock them out?
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Not sure if serious||
I did my undergrad during the tommy a years and they couldn't give those tickets away. I remember a game against Miami where the tickets were like 5$ upper bowl and it was still 3/4 empty....
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Do you live in Ann Arbor?||
Or are close enough to travel easily to games?
I only ask because I used to have the same sentiments that you are expressing when I lived on the east coast: "What's wrong for you people complaining about going to Michigan Stadium. I WISH I could be there for a game..."
Then I moved back to Ann Arbor - close enough where I can conceivably go to every game I want - and I get what they were bitching about.
To me, the RAWK music and ads don't really turn me off; it's the money and lack of compelling games. But for one or two games a year (MSU, OSU, ND, Nebraska), I don't really feel the need to spend hundreds of bucks to watch Michigan clobber some MAC cupcake or (hopefully) win easily against Rutgers. Not when I can still expereince the tailgate atmosphere and watch the game on my couch with some nice beers and good chicken wings

Mgrowold -- what are your thoughts??
|3 years 3 weeks ago||Win or lose I am definitely||
Win or lose I am definitely impressed with state --- which disgusts me to say. I am a hoke "homer" and even I can see they are playing on an entirely different level than us. I am actually impressed we kept it close for as long as we did...
|3 years 3 weeks ago||Don't||
Usually say this but the msm has a great article about the potential politics behind his departure:
|3 years 3 weeks ago||Okay||
Well we have nothing to discuss if you don't think the head coach of a football team is not responsible for his record. You can't argue with stupid.
|3 years 3 weeks ago||this thread is fun.||
and alot of you people are revisionist idiots, sadomasochists, or both.
the worst development of the year has been the constant comparisons between michigan and RR. this place was 95% more pro-rr than anything else on the internet, and the only one upset over the firising was His Dudeness, or whatever ... everyone else saw it coming - even brian.
by the way, he was fired because he had the worst defense in the history of michigan football, was blown out by rivals, and let wisconsin run the ball 40 straight times. (seriously, does anyone remember that wisconsin game or are you all living in bizarro-world, where rr was a successful coach at michigan but somehow got ran out of town...?)
he is doing mediocre at arizona, but so what? he failed at michigan, for almost all reasons that were his fault; whatever he does at arizona will not affect that fact one way or the other.
|3 years 3 weeks ago||Yikes||
Hard to imagine our line is actually getting younger, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence ....
|3 years 4 weeks ago||these are the type of stories||
that go right into michigan lore.
sucks we didnt win, but this is the kind of thing that 30 years from now people tell their kids "i remember watching DG throw for 400 yards against ohio on a broken foot..."
heal up DG and bring us back to the promiseland next year...

|3 years 5 weeks ago||re the timeouts||
i was at the arizona game, but i havent been to a college bball game since my undergrad days. every other posession there was a break - there didnt seem to be any rythm in the game, the crowd never could get into it. there were just breaks, and breaks, and breaks.
was the amount of timeouts in this game an anomaly - or is it becoming standard in the college game? the timeouts had never seemed so pronounced watching on tv...
|3 years 5 weeks ago||I guess||
We will agree to disagree - I just don't see it going back to the so called "big boys" and the rest of them.
Texas tech, Baylor, Texas A&m, and tcu have all had better seasons than Texas in the last five years - and that's just in Texas alone. The landscape is changing, and if I'm an up and coming coach what's the incentive to leave a comfortable situation when I am making a boat load of money and winning?
Anyways I guess we all will wait and see but I think the hiring will be underwhelming and Texas may strike out on their top choices.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Meh||
Call me crazy, but I think who ever Texas hires will NOT be a big time hire (ie not Meyer, harbaugh, Saban, etc). College football is a crazy world these days - not only with inflated coaching salaries but teams like Baylor, Michigan state, Ucf, Louisville, etc can play in bcs bowl games - there's more parity than ever meaning people can win at "smaller" programs with out the additionally stress. And when coaches like sumlin are getting five million a year for winning zero conference titles or bcs games, why would a coach leave to a big time program?
I mean michigan found this out the hard way and I think Texas will too. Whoever they get I bet the collective reaction will be "that guy?!"
|3 years 5 weeks ago||am i||
the only one that thinks the thomas gordon - nebraska safety swap could have been more of a doghouse-type situation? as in, thomas gordon might have broken some amorphous team rule and was thus delegated to special teams duty?
it just doesnt make sense otherwise to take out a multi-year starter at safety for one game.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||i was thinking||
the same thing. there are some schools that wouldn't take saban with open arms. im not sure if texas is one of those schools, but judging from mack brown and their academic reputation, i am guessing they may not be a win-at-all-cost school. put it another way, would michigan take saban? i doubt it.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||This is||
Best case scenario for michigan, no? A big time program without their senior starting quarterback. I'll take it.
As an aside, is mark richt the most like able coach in the sec- or do I just not know much about him? He seems to be one of the few guys that does things the right way (not over signing?), but I'll also admit a certain level of ignorance if one wants to correct me...
|3 years 6 weeks ago||Well||
Let's not forget that last year msu was 7-6.
They have done really well, no doubt about, but they will fluctuate between good/great to mediocre. Ostensibly, michigan will eventually fluctuate between good/great to elite (assuming this isn't a notre dame type situation)
|3 years 6 weeks ago||Kinda bizarre to say||
But I was thinking the same thing. Elite defense with an offense that uses a lot of dinky misdirection, power, frustrating three yard runs, with the occasional connected long ball.
We don't have to necessarily emulate Stanford when the paradigm is right in our own conference...
|3 years 6 weeks ago||is anyone||
going to be there?
attending a world cup is a bucket list item of mine, but im not exactly chomping at the bit to head out to qatar in the summer or russia after that....
|3 years 7 weeks ago||ace||
was very cryptic about peppers on this podcast, which was less than confident inspiring.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||As Brian says: Football is ridiculous.||
And I would go one step further and say: College football is even more ridiculous. It may be the only sport where past performance does not necessarily predict future results. A look at some of the teams currently playing for conference titles:
Az St 8-5 last season
Auburn / Mizzou total combined record of 2-14 in SEC play last season
Baylor 8-5 last season
Duke – pre-season pick to finish last in ACC Coastal
MSU 7-6 last season
So, for those who believe our record this season proves we’re going to be mired in mediocrity for the foreseeable future, remember that the past isn’t necessarily prologue when it comes to college football…
|3 years 7 weeks ago||re your last sentence||
Felt the exact same way. Those three yards really changed the whole dynamic of the Urban vs Hoke meme. If we convert, Hoke is 2-1 against ohio, 1-1 against Urban. As it stands, he is now 1-2 against Ohio and, most importantly, 0-2 against Urban.
That sets up a must-win at the Shoe next year, otherwise the whispers that say Hoke can't beat Urban would become shouts.

A young team. And young teams will lose some games they shouldn't lose, but they will also win some games they shouldn't win. They came up three yards short which sucks but there was enough to build on today to be excited moving forward.
Definitely next year though the leash gets shorter and there won't be any good feelings for moral victories.....

Go blue! Disappointed as hell but what heart - proud to be a michigan fan and glad I never turned my back on the team. There's a lot to build off of for next year.
