No way Patterson is headed back to IU. He departed on a really sour note during one of their scholarship crunch periods. It was claimed that he didn't meet academic eligibility requirements after his summer classes but I'm not sure how true that was. He was actually the type of guy that Crean typically helps turn into a productive player so it was a head scratcher at the time. He's a D and energy guy. Not a shooter.

The Kings had written off McLemore last year as well. He's improved in his second year. Writing off a rookie is completely stupid. Nik has an elite NBA skill, he can shoot. He's smart enough to eventually become a passable team defender. There's no reason he can't stick on as a rotation player eventually.
That front office fired a guy who was actually doing fairly well coaching the team and hired one of the worst five NBA coaches of the last decade as his replacement. Nik hasn't been good. Yet. But jesus he's halfway through his rookie season. Give the guy a break.

I doubt it. This kid is Cam Newton's size with good athleticism and showed that he can throw a nice, tight ball down the field, even if his receivers were WIDE open often. I get where teams wouldn't want to waste a high first on him, but he wouldn't make it past the second round. There are too many teams who need a QB to not take a flier on this guy. If he was smaller or hadn't thrown the ball as effectively I get it. But he had a hell of an audition and god knows he doesn't want to end up banged up like Devin did before he can sign a contract. I'd say there's a good chance he's out.

In a world of increasingly sterile and superficial relationships I find the emphasis on the coach and recruit/player to be refreshing in most cases and creepy in others. In Brady's case it truly seemed that the relationships he forged were very strong with his players and recruits. If a recruit has another coach he feels comfortable with willing to extend an offer his way I feel he's doing the right thing by switching as soon as possible. Fans don't give much thought to 'excess' recruits after their positions have been filled in a class. But these kids don't have unlimited time to commit to offers. More often than not it probably behooves them to choose the next best situation rather than waiting for a coaching staff which may not have the same chemistry as the previous regime.

The way the US was to succeed in the WC finals was to focus on their strengths and play with a focus on increased variance. When a team keeps the game low scoring teams with lower talent can grab a piece of luck and win the match. Greece won a Euros going 1-0 on better teams doing just this.
Any steady fan will admit that we did not have the talent of ANY of our opponents. Bunker/counter and playing a low scoring match was the absolute best way for us to succeed. Until we have more talent this doesn't change things. For anybody who has watched through the last two cycles there has been a noticeable shift where we have been better on the front foot against teams with equal/less talent. But this does not mean we can control a possession based match against more talented teams.
To put it in terms everyone will hate: RichRod's ultimate coaching goal is to decrease variance by increasing possessions in a game, relying on his offense's skill to outscore his opponents by a small amount per possession. Teams that play more plodding styles, ahem DeBord et al, are relying on luck more than teams that aren't. But when you're devoid of talent in soccer that's the absolute best way. Almost everything JK did this WC finals was at the least defendable and at best a good decision. Anybody thinking we're more than we are isn't realistic. Anybody else, hop on for the ride. I am very much looking forward to the next 10+ cycles.

Tyler "Mr. Maize" Schwartz was 29 years old.
It was probably obvious Mr. Maize was 29. He had an "I'm not supposed to be here smile" and a hairline that was betraying the lie that tonight, he was a college student. But the true harbinger of displacement, the actual color maize itself.
You see, Tyler is from an older school of fandom. A fandom where "The Victors" isn't played too fast by the band. A fandom that doesn't obsess over recruiting and the players' outside lives. A fandom that believes players will be players and supporters will be supporters. And all should be gentlemen. But for Tyler, the color of gentleman is not neon yellow. It is maize. With a beautiful blue block M on the front of it.
Tyler tried to go to college. He was a 3.91 in high school. 32 on the ACT. Enrolled early admission. But like so many other overly protected freshmen do he fell to the temptations of drugs and alcohol. They became more important than class. Bad grades caused him to slip into depression. Mr. Maize was lost.
But Mr. Maize in his heart was a true Michigan man and one that didn't quit. He enlisted in the Army and did multiple tours in combat in multiple locations. He wore his fandom proudly wherever he went knowing that while his successes may not have come as a result of a Michigan degree he still felt it in his heart. And nobody could tell him differently.
So, treating himself to a game with his little brother's ticket he once again felt it. The Michigan man inside him combined with the Michigan man inside the others surrounding him. Tyler may never hold a degree, attend an alumni event, or be able to shut up a sparty who claimed he didn't actually graduate from the University. But it was finally clear. He was a man. Assuredly a Michigan man. Tyler was Mr. Maize.

|2 years 10 weeks ago||The main takeaway I got from||
The main takeaway I got from this past weekend is that Minnesota is indeed that good. Indiana played 10 minutes of the best basketball you'll ever see and then Minnesota came right back at them and whittled it away until the end. IU was the beneficiary of some inconsistent officiating as well. Of course, just my opinion. The refs mainly let them play until about 15 minutes remaining in the second half when ever close whistle went against Minnesota.
Bottom line, if a team doesn't play at least their B+ game on the road against any of the top half teams in the conference, winning on the road is going to be close to impossible. The conference is just that loaded. We're getting 7 teams in the tourney at least (UM, IU, MSU, ILL, MINN, WIS, OSU) and Iowa is good enough to make it if they can take care of the bottom of the conference and pull two upsets at home.
It's a shame that we probably can't get multiple 1 seeds with Kansas, Duke and Louisville playing in conferences that are experiencing relatively down years. Because I think we have three of the top six teams in the country in this conference. Good luck getting out with less than 4 losses no matter how it shakes.

IU was missing a fair amount of wide open threes that they won't miss in most games. The takeaway from this game is that their defense is really improved, especially on the perimeter. They defended the ball screen incredibly well.
And then as always they just have too many bodies and play too fast for most teams to keep up with for forty minutes. There are maybe 12 teams in the country capable of beating Indiana more than 1 time in 3 on a neutral court. Five of them are probably in the B1G.

|2 years 20 weeks ago||It's really a slippery slope.||
It's really a slippery slope. I mean... $185 over 7 years that a dude's ex wife used to buy bumper stickers? That's 9 games for each player and $1500 they must repay because their legal guardian bought them coats when they moved to northern Indiana.
I realize this doesn't equate, but I just donated a comparable amount of money to a kickstarter sponsored by Martavious Odoms that had his history as a Michigan player in the request text. I donated the money specifically because I admired the way Martavious represented the University during some trying times. Does this mean I couldn't direct my kid to play for UM?
It's a ridiculous thought, certainly, but after watching this university get pounded for stretching after a witch hunt by a newspaper looking for subscriptions, and seeing two kids getting benched 9 games each because a foundation bought them a coat and the leader happened to pay 185 bucks to a school the kids committed to I'm beginning to wonder what where the absurd line is drawn.

sports betting follows a bit of a pattern. public bettors are usually prone to bet favorites because they're obviously the better team. also overs are favored by the public usually.
that said the lines this week are large and i feel a little bit too large. do you really want a wisconsin team to need to cover more than TD/TD/FG against ANY B1G team? i certainly don't. i like minnesota in that one.
purdue/osu is similar. osu has struggled to put teams away, even mediocre ones. i understand purdue has been poor recently, but hope is not a quitter and they do not have a history of quitting on him. again, that line is huge. osu could score 60 and still not cover this game. i'm not taking them by three scores against anybody.
kevin wilson is doing a good job at indiana but they're without their early qb and just played the game of their lives. we've seen what service academies can do. give me navy and that very valuable .5
as far as our game is concerned i have a rule that i never take a double digit rival favorite in a game where the underdog is treating it as their season. granted, sparty could take 15 penalties and get absolutely housed, but i do not like michigan's side here. i think it's a stay away.
if there's a game that might have some value on the favorite i feel it's nebraska/northwestern. i feel northwestern is still being overvalued a bit. their secondary is prone to disaster and nebraska hasn't struggled to score points this year.
that said, bottom line, give me the dogs purdue/navy/minnesota. stay away from michigan. go with nebraska and the 7. if the nebraska line moves off the 7 i'm hitting hard one way or the other. if it bumps to 7.5 i'm teasing it like crazy and if it drops to 6.5 i'm tripling down on it.

all proceeds donated to Tay's kickstarter with a placeholder that I'll hopefully get to donate a cool experience of laser tag/go karting to a kid that volunteers his time and works hard on the project.

Think of it this way. Is Smith going to get more than 25% of the total carries? Doubtful imo. For that to happen we're going to have to have more than 40 rushing attempts in this game. The better prop is who will get more carries between Smith and Rawls.

First impressions, not a lot of Big East in the top tier of that bracket. Another down year there outside of Syracuse?
Color me an Indiana believer. Those seniors next year are as experienced as any bunch in the nation. Their defensive issues mostly stemmed from Hulls having to guard the ball which won't be the case next year. He moves into strictly a shooter's role and can be hidden defensively against all but the most elite athletic teams. Oladipo and Sheehey can both really defend. Zeller is a solid defender too. Their new 7 footer Jurkin is very light on his feet. Will foul a ton but he's replacing Pritchard who fouled a ton without the athleticism. This is going to be a very good team. I fully expect Crean to cost them in the Final Four (or sooner) with some boneheaded in-game managing. But I'll be legit surprised if they aren't a 1 or 2 seed come March 2013

Crean benched Hulls at the end of the VCU game so he's not incapable of it. Do not be surprised to see Jordy with less minutes next year.
Hulls does have some confidence issues, and his mistakes tend to compound. It's also close to a given that Yogi is the starting PG from day 1. He's a true Crean point guard and Hulls really is a utility shooter who was forced to handle the ball. Abell was capable when Jones went down, and the three-star Patterson is probably Indiana's best perimeter defender the day he steps on campus.
There are always minutes for a shooter. But I'd expect Hulls to see closer to 20 minutes than the 30 he saw this year.
Hollowell is the wild card. He's a creator who seems ready to contribute right away. If he's as good as many think he'll be and if they avoid injury Indiana is going to win 30.

In all seriousness Crean has done a much better job with in game coaching than I had given him credit for while he was at Marquette... even if they did get a benefit of the calls in their two biggest upsets (the Ohio State game was more egregious than the UK one imo.)
They took it right at UK tonight and if Kentucky shot their normal percentage from the free throw line or wasn't on fire from 3 that game would have come down to the wire. Both teams played about as well as they could. IU will be SCARY good next year once they add their first natural PG in roughly 10 years (Ferrell.) They should be favorites for a top 3 finish in the B1G and I would not be surprised if they win 14 games in conference. If Zeller stays (and he probably will) that's a legit Final Four contender with Hulls being able to play the 1 and 2 and the athleticism upgrade off the bench at the 4/5.
Granted, the upgrade from the graduating Pritchard to a bucket of sand is probably marked. But Hanner Perea is going to turn some heads next year.

It's one of the true tragedies in sport. It's like watching an olympic sprinter false start out of his only chance at the 100m finals. Verdell was a guy who was much-maligned on three teams that would have struggled to finish in the top half of the MAC. He gets his one shot at the dance after four years of grueling work with little fan support and then this happens.
I do fear some of the doom predictions for the Hoosiers are overblown though. Verdell was a steady hand but this team will go as far as Watford/Oladipo/Sheehey take them. You know what you're getting from everyone else. If those three guys are on Indiana can beat anybody as they've proven. If they're not, they won't see the Sweet 16. Plus, Freshman Remy Abell had a huge game against Purdue in Verdell's injury absence earlier in the year. He's not a fair swap, but he can put in 10 effective minutes if need.

I'll say this for JK, he definitely has our guys getting the ball off their feet quickly. Against a team like Italy that's imperative to create chances. Their defense is usually so sound that the pace of the ball will create openings. Kind of like playing against the old Temple basketball 2-3.
That said, we're still an absolute sieve in the back.

The B1G is not getting any weaker. Indiana's 2012 class is consensus top 5 and has a chance to be 1 overall. They're certainly on their way up. OSU isn't going anywhere the way Matta recruits. Purdue and Illinois both have some good young players. And then of course there is Sparty and Wisconsin. 2012 B1G is going to be a bloodbath. I'm not sure it's fair to pick anybody as a favorite there when there's a legit chance the B1G could have 8 teams that are ranked throughout the year and 4 legit top 10 candidates.

I was at a game at the shoe when I was an MMB member (the year they won the national title) and while there was certainly vitriol present I never once felt physically threatened. They're just drunken loud fans. Sparty fans are the type of guy that will pick a fight even if he's outnumbered 5 to 1. And while pathetic, that guy obviously has nothing to lose. And that makes him scarier to me. Different strokes I guess.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||The funny thing about Sparty||
The funny thing about Sparty is that their fan breakdown is probably 45% superiority complex, 45% inferiority complex, and 10% rational. Yet the one thing they're all bound in unity over is their intense hatred for big brother. Seriously, at any time over at RCMB there are a few threads that focus on Michigan and a good number of discussions on their own teams eventually drift into debates on how they stack up against Michigan.
They're a scary fanbase and it's easy to see why they riot in their town when something big (good or bad) happens to one of their teams. I'll never attend a game at Spartan Stadium and while I'm perfectly willing to be friendly and hospitable if I meet them in Ann Arbor it's the fanbase in the B1G that I'm most leery of because they're the least predictable.

|3 years 30 weeks ago||I hate to be that guy, but||
I hate to be that guy, but it's just the preseason. Good teams are good teams, sure. But what's Indy's record the last 10 years in the preseason?
Like, under .200, yeah? You can judge a little bit on individual players' improvements in their skillsets, especially guys going into their second and third years, but outside of that the real work is done in the camps in the offseason, which hurts a young team like the Lions that is going to need their (also young) QB to have an excellent season to find 10 wins.
To get to double digit wins they're going to need to win 4 games in the division realistically and it's tough to find road wins in the NFC North. If Minnesota is a mess then the Lions have a shot at 4 wins in division, but unless they implode I think 3-3 is much more likely.
Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping for it as much as the next guy, but expecting dramatic improvement without consistent summer work amongst a young, improving offense is a bit short-sighted. This team can be a solid 8-8 with an eye to the future and I wouldn't be disappointed. Anything below .500 is obviously going to be a disappointment.

US Soccer made a hell of a good commercial pre WC2010 featuring the Cohan WWI anthem "Over There." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqZsFM7Sg8
It never caught on and I have no idea why. It probably makes too damn much sense being that it's a historical anthem, it includes "Yanks" which is the team's nickname, and it's super easy to sing. So naturally... didn't work.
As far as popular music is concerned there just isn't a lot of melody-filled music popular these days. It's either rap, r&b, indie rock, or country. The internet has helped turn our country into a niche-based musical nation. We can get what we want when we want it.
The best anthems are upbeat in my opinion. Cohan has actually done a bunch of stuff that could work. "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" being two more. I hope it gets solved. We sound like garbage with our 2 chants and the warbling failure that is en masse "God Bless America"
addendum: As annoying as "Seven Nation Army" is while cranked into every college football stadium every Saturday, it actually works fairly well as a US Soccer chant. At least The White Stripes are American...

Here's a link to Insidethehall's video of Donnal: http://www.insidethehall.com/recruit-profile-mark-donnal/
Things that jump out at me immediately:
positives: Soft touch for a big man, awareness and ability to pass out of a double team, willingness to go hard at the basket and draw contact, free throw ability, coachable, knows he is a post and plays within himself
negatives: needs to continue to hit the weight room, will require more positioning technique on most of his offensive rebounds when facing bigger kids, needs to continue to develop that right handed hook but already shows a nice touch on it
Again, can't stress enough how good I think this kid is going to be. Definitely All Big-Ten potential toward the end of his career. Paul Davis and Brad Miller are the two guys I think he'll most resemble toward the end of his career; deceptively hard nosed and more skilled than other conference bigs.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||From what I've seen of Donnal||
From what I've seen of Donnal he's going to be the real deal. Kid is a throwback and a guy that really values going at it in the post. As a fan of the Hoosiers I'm pretty bummed we didn't get on him earlier. He plays for Dan Dakich's AAU squad and Dakich raves about him. A very old-fashioned, hard-nosed, effort post with an already soft touch and a desire to get better. Would not be surprised to see this kid on some top 50 lists by the end of his senior year.

I respectfully disagree. Wins and losses certainly matter, but in my mind, and I know others, they're not as important as fielding a team that represents the University in a positive light without the undercurrent of serious NCAA violations and/or shady recruiting practices. I would not trade places with Auburn at the moment.
Considering the Freep debacle to be a hatchet job (and I do) I think Rich has done an admirable job maintaining a tradition of keeping the program stocked with guys who are good citizens and fun to cheer. I understand that every program has a few bad apples, but you need only look up at East Lansing to see a program that places wins over conduct. I wouldn't want to be a part of that either.
I will not be upset with a coaching change. And I will not be upset if Rich stays on. But to make a blanket statement that W/L records are the only that that matters is a little short-sighted.

Yeah you can't compare them. The Colts' DE tandem is arguably the best in the league at rushing the QB.
But the biggest difference is that the Colts' safeties, Bethea and Bullitt are both excellent players. Sanders is a DPOY candidate when healthy, but the other guys are both capable of making the Pro Bowl, as Bethea already has.
To emulate the Colts D you need: 2 amazing pass rushing DEs, 2 physical corners that sacrifice speed for tackling and good coverage on short routes, 2 ball hawking safeties that hit when they get the chance, a smart undersized MLB that makes good calls, 2 fast OLBs that have some free reign to overcome mistakes because they can gang tackle well from the backside.
Their only real weakness is at DT, but with an offense that can get a lead teams can't always run all day like Houston did.

This whole thing is shaping up to be quite the Posada... adventure? I got nothing.

We discussed this sometime last winter, but Indianapolis is a great city in which to hold the game. Easily drivable, easy to get in and out, lots of downtown hotels that are walkable, plenty of cheap flights in and out, some decent restaurants and shopping downtown.
And maybe they can open the roof if it's a nice day? It's not a dome. It's retractable. Although there have been issues with the sun when the Colts have played with it open.

'Smoked' seems a little harsh. According to whom? The student block? The average fan that has never attended the University? Kids? Alumni?
The best thing about the band is that it's a connect between the 2 year old that automatically loves instruments (loud and shiny obviously) and the 90 year old that graduated in 1942. The band was there then and it's there now preserving the traditions and tying generations of fans together. It's something we can all rally behind, just like the football team.
The same holds true at the Black colleges. What they do is unique to their Universities and an awesome way to connect fans.
No matter how they continue to entertain and evolve my biggest hope would be that MMB doesn't try to be someone else's band. They're already great. Other bands are great too! Why do we have to compare them? Why can't we just enjoy them for what they are?

The MMB is awesome no matter how you slice it. A student organization that takes that much pride in what they do it really cool to watch no matter if you're just a fan, alumni, student. Just take pride and do what you do and stop worrying about the naysayers. 99% of people are leaving the stadium that day without one negative thing to say about the band. The 1% is going to bitch no matter what.
