Sounds like it could be a shoot out- or Borges vs. Borges (who will win?)

If that K-State OSU game had gone one more minute in at the end k-state would have won- they were on fire in that last quarter. The only reason they lost was because of such a bad first quarter. Their QB started the game distracted by allegations of rape (sound familiar?) and threw a quick pick six in the 1st 10 minutes. I respect what Snyder can do- they should be treated very seriously.

No more excuses next year! That is another reason why I like this decision, this eliminates the arguing points about lack of experience, consistent coaching, etc. The experiment is running its full course. I expect everybody to get along next year here on this board with no arguments.
|1 week 3 days ago||I like this announcement||
I like this announcement because I think it might be hard to find a good replacement OC. Borges has only two years of his recruits and not even his own style of QB. Should he be doing more with what he has? Definitely. Would many quality OC's walk into a situation where they could be fired in 2 years with other guys recruits? No. New coaches have to relocate families, sell houses, work long hours, cut recruiting ties, etc. - its big hassle to move. Why would you do that every 2 years? Also, how good will the offense be next year learning another new system? This is the best way to go and then, if things don't work out, make a decision on the entire package- Hoke and his crew- as one unit. Clear the weeds and replant.

Give MSU's DC a year with our group and see how their "talent" and "experience" improves vastly. Other teams' defenses out perform us with much less. Recruiting 5 star athletes is not as important as recruiting teachable, eager kids and knowing what to tell them. I would swap fro MSU's DC today if I could.

I have found that very few sports fans are willing to admit that chance plays a great role in a teams record. But the reality is that any game is simply a series of plays that are not necessarily connected to each other. A bounce of a ball, the sun getting in the eyes of a receiver, a referees call (or non call)- these can determine a game and a season. People love to praise or trash coaches rather than say they got lucky or unlucky. A team that just barely beats another team 5 times in a row is viewed as "dominating". Fans invest their egos into their teams- they don't feel comfortable with the idea that chance often plays such a large role in sports. But chance plays a large role in life too. Were you ever nearly killed? Was their a decision you could of easily made that would have really hurt you? Chance isn't everything- some teams really do dominate- but chance accounts for a lot more than people are willing to admit.

Well, if this game prevents OSU from getting into the NC then it will feel like a win on some level.

The Big 10 is very weak- the offenses Mattison stopped were not that great and the defenses OSU rolled over were not that great also (IOW, OSU is not such an offensive powerhouse as many believe) UM's defense is a lot closer to the offense than most think. Borges isn't the greatest OC, maybe not even good- but Mattison is not doing that much better and today it showed. I could care less if Borges is fired or not (he will get a nice package) but the blind eye to Mattison's faults this season has been extreme. Mattison has not done that well this year and this teams defense is not that impressive. Time to be a little more fair.
|1 week 5 days ago||Borges can't win for losing||
Borges can't win for losing here. He doesn't even have his own QB yet either- just 2 young classes of his own players. Wonder if he will still be canned.
|1 week 5 days ago||Defense was a real let down-||
Defense was a real let down- and people can't blame Borges this time for keeping the D on the field too long and tiring them out- OSU rolled up yards and point early. The differences between Mattison and Borges are not that great. Borges almost saved the game today- firing him is not going to transform this team.

I live in C-bus and know the O-H-I-O type well. He is right about the "hunger" part- buckeye fans are piranhas who will protest coaches houses (yes, its happened). Michigan fans just don't raise the same fuss. There are a legion of excuses I see every day on this board for complete failure- youth, schedule, Carr, RR, even a coaches dad dying. Buckeye fans wouldn't even tolerate that last one (which they probably should). It does seem as though Michigan is more like a country club where insiders protect their own. OSU has far less loyalty to "family" (though it is there)- winning is ALL that counts down here.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Mattison may be doing a||
Mattison may be doing a better job than Borges- but many teams have had above average yards against our D this year. And if OSU puts up 30+ on Saturday do people really think getting rid of Borges is the solution? My guess is OSU will score a lot in the first half, before Mattison's guys are tired and people can blame Borges' offense for the D. Hoke is impacting the team in an undesirable way and he will never win the B10. I am not sure if it is due to softness, favoritism, lack of emotion- but he is casting a shadow IMO.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||In the transcript he mentions||
In the transcript he mentions how scout teams are slower than game play, etc. I understand this from a teaching standpoint- to slow things down to get proper technique in- but don't they speed it up to game speed in practice for the final days to make sure this stuff works in real time? Maybe practice is too far removed from reality and the team can't handle game speed.

Actually, Hoke could buy some tickets with his salary and raffle them off to UM fans to acknowledge the fact that he gets it and cares. It really wouldn't cost him much if "Ohio" is that important.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Your definition of fandom is||
Your definition of fandom is absolutely valid- and held by many people. But it creates no motivation for Brandon to improve the program at all. It is similar to victimization. This is why I feel nothing strong about this issue- fans are choosing to be victims by paying money for games and should take responsibility for this decision. Complaining seems out of place- just don't pay the money. If you want to support the athletes buy them dinner.

The US military hasn't fought for freedom in 230 years? South Koreans would beg to differ with you on that one (and many North Koreans I suspect)
|2 weeks 3 days ago||The commercialization process||
The commercialization process is so constant and gradual that I think many don't notice all the small changes happening each year. My guess is that if the average fan could step back into a game 20 years ago they would be shocked by the differences. But in the end, what is left of original American culture anywhere today?
|2 weeks 3 days ago||For motivation I would||
For motivation I would promise the players, if they win, a hotel with attractive women, good food, video games and intoxicants (in that order) since this seems to motivate most human males. For a pre-game ritual I would hire a Klingon to lead this as they would not find meditation very exciting (though it centers the mind). The media will receive a 158 page analysis anticipating every possible question so no press conference will be necessary. I do however find this human preoccupation with "winning" to be counterproductive. I will offer a truce that will ensure future NCAA team cooperation so that student athletes can be freed to pursue higher goals.

|2 weeks 4 days ago||For me there is something||
For me there is something just as important as an offense's yards- its how fun the offense is. Football is entertainment- so it should be entertaining or why watch? Nobody is getting paid to watch so it should be fun, right? RR's offenses were generally a lot of fun to watch (until he met great defenses). I liked the high speed nature of RR's game. I miss that these days. Even when UM's offense moves the ball under Hoke it is generally dull and seems like its in slow motion. I just don't want to watch it anymore- its just not fun to look at. I hope UM does well against OSU - but I don't want to watch them anymore, its too painful and dull. I can take a loss if its still exciting- but a dull loss is the worst of all.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||No way the problems of this||
No way the problems of this team will be solved by firing Borges and Funk- the defense is only good against mediocre offenses and the special teams haven't been special all year. OSU will light up Mattison next week. Hoke is the problem. His teams are soft, undisciplined and execute poorly- all 3 parts of the team are in trouble and will be completely exposed next week..

|2 weeks 6 days ago||I think Tressel's "dominance"||
I think Tressel's "dominance" of Carr is maybe more illusion than reality. Their teams played games that were generally very close in terms of points. When games come down to one or two plays the teams are near a statistical tie. If you flip a coin 50 times you will find that you can get runs of 5 heads or 7 tails. I think Carr just got an unlucky roll of the dice. Anyone who understands probabilities realizes that a series of close wins does not equal dominance. Carr was a much better coach than people give him credit. He actually pulled off manball; I rememeber how he smashed Weis and ND by punching them in the face. Punched Tebow in the face too.

Hoke is in a no win situation here- if the new back does well his past decisions will be criticized, if the back doesn't do well it will seem like everything is broken. This is late to be making a change.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||I read the game thread for||
I read the game thread for once- the 3 things that I found most common among statements were: 1. we can't block 2. Borges playcalling is terrible 3. DG is not a very good/smart QB. Strangely, while there have been multiple threads on the first 2 subjects there hasn't been much discussion about the third. There seems to be no serious QB controversy.
