I don't know if it has to go to a senior, but if he did a lot of great work off the field, that would sound like a better reward as opposed to an on-field award.
|22 hours 47 min ago||That Sugar Bowl...||
...was painful to watch. That game made me realize how much we were going to miss Molk. That offensive performance after he left the game was enough to make me want to revote him as offensive MVP that year.
|23 hours 22 sec ago||You know who was jobbed?||
PSU in 1994. But that's a different discussion. I don't feel jobbed, especially since most people in 49 other states and however many other countries there are thought we were the true best team in college football.
|23 hours 5 min ago||There were more conferences in 1997||
Big East (YTM, Va Tech, etc) was still around and the ACC had FSU, UNC (Dre Bly squad) and others. Now it's like five legit conferences and a bunch of mid-tiers.
|23 hours 7 min ago||Maybe ACC as well||
Clemson, FSU, Miami is a pretty good trio. And I don't know if the bottom of their conference is as much of a tire fire as ours.

|1 day 9 hours ago||Who knows||
But Nebraska did stomp Tennessee by 25 points and many coaches changed their vote after the poll. And we barely beat WSU. And the B1G sucked in the bowl games. I just don't think it was a "retirement" gift to Osborne.
|1 day 9 hours ago||Outside of 1999 and 2006||
He's somewhat correct about being in the MNC conversation. And even in 1999 we lost back to back games in mid-October to put us out of the picture. The pattern was start the season ranked high, lose a game in September or early October, win a couple games to be on the fringe of the MNC conversation, then stumble again and completely fall out of the picture. I noticed that trend in Moeller's last year (1994).
|1 day 9 hours ago||Same could be said for 1997||
"Their close loss to OSU looked a lot worse after the BCS championship game."
I still think the reason we only got a split MNC with Nebraska is because the B1G stunk in the bowl games. 2-5 and the only other win was Purdue, a team we didn't face. People cry about Osborne getting a going away gift, but the fact remains that our conference did us no favors that bowl season. Our wins did not look as good.
|1 day 9 hours ago||The competition in 1994-1996||
That competition was better in comparison to what we're playing against now. The B1G was one of the top 2-3 conferences. If not for us screwing OSU's season in 1995 and 1996, the B1G may have had two MNC's. And PSU should've won at least a share of the MNC in 1994. So you're looking at 2 maybe 3 MNCs in that period. That tells you how strong the conference was.
Being B1G good doesn't equate to national success, but I think we'll probably be at least that good.
|1 week 5 days ago||UCLA game||
We had a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter. In believe we had double digit leads in the 4th Qtr in all those games. That team should have played for the MNC.
|1 week 6 days ago||Henson was from Brighton||
But to add to your point, we've been really good at recruiting nationally since I've been following them in the mid-80s. Toomer, Hayes, Todd Collins, Jarret Irons, Griese, Brady, and on and on and on. I don't think we have the success of the 80s, 90s and early 00s without those guys.
|1 week 6 days ago||3 out of 12 years||
And we didn't win the Rose Bowl in any of those years. We also lost to OSU in two of those seasons. This isn't Purdue or Illinois. That's not good enough.
|1 week 6 days ago||1996 was comparable||
In 1993, we had a couple very close losses, but were coming off a couple blowout wins. And the 1995 team lost some close games, but we knew Biakabutuka was a beast and we still had Toomer and Hayes, not to mention Jarret Irons and a pretty good defensive line.
But that 1996 game @ OSU? I stayed in my dorm room and watched it by myself. We played so horribly the week before at home against PSU, not to mention the egg we laid at Purdue. I thought the game would be over by halftime. There was little to no confidence Griese. That's probably the best comparison out of the years you mentioned.
|1 week 6 days ago||At least those were to good teams||
Wisconsin went to the Rose Bowl, Ohio State the Sugar. And that OSU game fell apart because of our turnovers. We were moving the ball at ease in the first half of that game and it should have been a lot closer going into halftime. The bowl game I blame on the guys playing for a lame duck coach.
This year, we're losing to mid-pack B1G teams. It makes a difference in my mind though I see your perspective.
|1 week 6 days ago||Would've had 12 wins||
If Borges didn't go all Borges in the Iowa game and forget that we had Denard in the backfield.
|1 week 6 days ago||For Hoke to get 2 more years||
He needs to do a better job from here through next season. There's only so much blaming the other guy that you can do. And there's only so much blaming the youth that you can do. The players have to show improvement and another 4-5 loss season is not good enough in this dumpster fire of a conference.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||24-17||
Yes, you may have been too drunk
I think we got the go ahead touchdown late in the game.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||What's the difference between him and RichRod?||
They're both spread guys right?
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||I thought this was Cooper's best coaching job...||
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||They should've beaten us||
We played like crap most of that game. But a win is a win over OSU I guess.
|2 weeks 20 hours ago||I won't ask your age||
But do you know the difference between those Michigan teams and seasons and this one? We had All-Americans at skill positions and future NFLers on the lines. Biakabutuka was a first round NFL pick. We don't have any of those running out of the tunnel Saturday. Oh, we also had Woodson on that 1995 team. And Amani Toomer. And Mercury Hayes.
In 1993 you had Wheatley and Todd Collins. I'm sorry, the difference in talent is wide. Those teams would smash this team by 20-30 points. These are kids and anything is possible, but those teams that you reference for your hope had a lot going for them heading into The Game.
|2 weeks 21 hours ago||OSU just needed a tie for the Rose Bowl||
Good job Coop!
|2 weeks 21 hours ago||I doubt this game is over by halftime||
Our D does not suck, so they should be able to keep it respectable going into halftime. But I doubt we have many extended drives and the D finally gets gassed in the second half.
|2 weeks 21 hours ago||I sorta wish they'd wait a couple weeks to visit||
Wait until December when we're not getting the doors blown off by OSU. If anything, those kids may come away more impressed with OSU.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Are you assuming year 4 is a bounce-back year?||
If we are asking the same questions about this team next year, then Hoke is probably done. That would be three consecutive years of mediocre results. Also, isn't Hoke the DL coach? The position he coaches isn't doing that great either and needs to perform at a higher level in 2014.
I don't think any coach should be fired after three years. I thought firing RichRod was a poor move and I think this would be the case as well. You can keep a guy around just because he's winning National Signing Day.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I still support the team||
But now I find more productive things to do on my Saturdays. I'll still buy my Michigan clothes, probably watch whatever bowl game they're in as long as it's not on NFL Network and keep a glimmer of hope that OSU forgets how to move forward with the ball on offense.
But now I'm more interested in what the offseason brings.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Bowl games are not about fairness||
It's about taking the team who will sell tickets and get people watching on TV. Plus, Sparty probably will not qualify it they fall out of the BCS top 14 after losing the BTCG.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||B1G Schedule||
RichRod's main struggles were against Sparty, Wisconsin, PSU and OSU. Those are the four most successful programs in the B1G the past 5-10 years.
Lloyd hasn't faced Wisconsin in three years, and this year was the first year we've played PSU (Loss). Our B1G schedule has been easier the past three years. We should be better in conference.
Swapping out Wisconsin and Penn State in 2009 and 2010 probably makes us bowl eligible in the former year and an 8-9 win team in the latter year.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Thank you for this||
I don't want Bama.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||2006 @ ND||
A dominating road win over a top-5 team. As we see, just playing well on the road isn't easy. Plus it served as a springboard to a pretty good regular season.
As great as the bowl win over Florida was, there wasn't anything on the line except pride.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Our schedule was significantly easier in 2011||
That's helped us towards an 10-2 season regular season.
If we had Minnesota and NW on the schedule in 2010 instead of Wisconsin and Penn State, you could be looking at a 9-3 regular season instead of 7-5.
Conversely, if we had PSU and Wisconsin on the schedule in 2011, it's possible that we only split those two games at best.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Year 4?||
I do believe that with the schedule they had, and OSU firing Tressel that Michigan at least duplicates the record with Hoke.
1. I believe he would have made the correct D-Coordinator hire and gotten out of the way.
RichRod excelled at beating bad teams and the 2010 schedule was loaded with them. I think that reasonable people felt that he just needed to hire a top defensive coordinator and get out of the way.
BTW - I don't look at that bowl game as anything more than a team realizing they were playing for a guy who wouldn't be their coach in a few days.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Most were due to stupid 7 step drops||
that Borges continues to call. If the man had a running game to take the pressure off or a better designed passing game, you could fairly evaluate him.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Pass rush||
Pressure on the QB is the name of the game with all these pass happy offenses. We're not doing that very well. Our front four generates little consistent pass rush and our blitzes rarely get home. I would hate to see what would happen if we got stuck in the Gator Bowl against a Mizzou or Texas A&M.
We'll find out how good our defense is against OSU. But I'm not very encouraged after giving up over 150 yards on the ground to Iowa.

The same could be said for Holland since Illitch owns the Red Wings as well and he has been spending big since the early-90s.
I would give the nod to Dombrowski because he took over a dumpster fire of a franchise and rebuilt the minor leagues and the major league club. Holland took over a Cup winner and established the success over the years. Dombrowski helped change the culture while Holland maintained the status quo, thanks in large part to Illitch's money.

That lazy ass effort he made in the ninth inning of Game 2 for Iglesias' low throw was enough for me. He looked disinterested. He did go through a divorce, so I'm sure that had an effect, but I mean he started out the season fine. Then he just because pretty average, definitely not worth the money he's making.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Fielder was worse than meh after April||
Below average defense, not a great base runner and had an OPS barely better than Don Kelly for most of the season. This was a contract that most baseball people said would be an issue once his play starts to decline.
By offloading that big contract, they can keep their Cy Young winner, and get a better corner outfielder than Andy Dirks. Personally, I'd go after Ellsbury and stick him in left field and have him bat leadoff. Probably wishful thinking, but it's something I'd look into.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Dierdorf and Bo called a game together once||
It was for ABC when go was calling college football. It was a blowout win at Indiana. I can't remember if they sang The Victors in the 4th Quarter or if they did some other crowing. As a Michigan fan, I thought this was suitable payback for all the years of what I thought was biased coverage against Michigan.
|3 weeks 18 hours ago||Semi-decent?||
It may take us until B1G season to adapt to life after Burke, but this is still the second or third best team in the conference, and that's good enough to be a top 15 team. Iowa and Purdue may be better, but neither their returning core nor incoming recruiting classes were as good as what we have.
For all the Sparty hype, they still drop games on the road in conference that are a bit mind boggling. From what I've seen thus far, I don't see any difference. I think you're selling this team waaay too short.

|3 weeks 22 hours ago||A few things about the 1993 team||
We started out the season #3 and had three players who made All-American.
We clobbered Minnesota 58-7 the week before. And three of our four losses were under a touchdown.
We also had Tyrone Wheatley, Amani Toomer and Mercury Hayes on offense and Ty Law on defense. That was a very talented team that ran into a rouch patch in the middle of the season.
I like to channel 1993 to give me some hope, but I don't see that same type of talent on our sidelines right now.

Seriously, was the ST coach responsible for having those guys ready to get out there for the FG? Do we have an ST coach? He deserves a raise.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||"You can't assume we'd have gotten the ball back with the score"||
That's why I kick the FG. You can't assume we'd get the ball back that late and our 2-minute offense was abysmal last week, so go for the sure thing chip shot FG and trust the D that was good all game long.
Besides, NW moved the ball out to the 30 It's not as if they just ran into a stacked line three times and punted. They ran their regular offense. They moved the ball pretty well, converting two first downs, and fortunately we were able to make one big play. They were three yards short of converting one more time and being able to run out the clock. Huge gamble by the staff and the defense bailed them out.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I wonder if NW's D was worn down||
That could be a reason why we were able to run the ball better.
Hopefully Fitz will be back next week. With all his injuries, I don't think he's the same player he was when he stepped on campus.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I think DG just doesn't trust his protection||
Brandstatter was mentioning that on the radio in the third quarter. He's so used to being harassed, that he feels pressure even when it's not there. Any QB would feel skittish with protection like he's had the last two weeks.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||You do realize that was an awful call||
And should have been ballgame. When it's a clutch time like that, your coaches need to give you a play you can succeed with.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Good job on end of regulation FG||
Coaches deserve props for that. Then again, that might have been the game winning FG if we kick the tying field goal five minutes earlier.
Not bad considering another monsoon game versus Northwestern.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||That playcall on 4th in goal was bizarre||
I have to believe DG ran the wrong way after the fake handoff. If he peels back and runs to the long side of the field, he has a better chance to score.
OT shows that we can be a good enough offense once the opposing defense is tired. Allowed Green to pound away more consistently.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||"Co-"Defensive Coordinator||
He was "Co-"Defensive Coordinator with Charlie Strong during that time. To ignore Charlie Strong's influence on that defense would be a disservice. That's about as good of a situation to walk in to share duties with one of the top 5-10 D-Coordinators in the country, and I'm talking about Strong, not Mattison.
Like I said, he's good, been around a long time, and very lucky to walk into some positions that were not as daunting as this current one.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Someone needs to look at our rankings so far||
This is not some crappy class. It had the chance to go from very good to F*CK ALL YOU HATERZ good. There's a couple months left. They need to respond on the football field because most fans truly don't pay attention to the recruiting stuff. They just figure Michigan football = good. We win a couple games, take advantage of the extra practice time for the bowl game and win on hopefully New Years Day. That will calm the fanbase.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||B1G also went 2-5 in bowls that year||

He was DC for only two seasons, promoted in the summer of 1995 after Lloyd took over the HC job. And he ditched us for ND after the 1996 season. So he only had one recruiting season as DC.
Also, that was Charlie Strong's defense that won that national title in 2007.
I'm not saying he's bad, but Lloyd was the DC when that 1997 defense was in high school. And Charlie Strong got his job at L'ville because of his work at UF.

we were ready to hang RichRod for that.
Nope. We weren't exactly playing great in our other B1G games. We nearly lost to Indiana twice. Probably should've lost those games. But I do believe that he was a good defensive coordinator and switch to the 4-3 away from giving us at least what we have had under Hoke's regime.
But unfortunately, he didn't have a chance with the crying about the #1 Jersey, Michigan Man, Practicegate garbage and "we can't run the spread in the B1G (but ignore OSU, NW and Indiana)." I don't mind the Hand decision, but those who ran RR out of town are getting their just desserts right now. Unfortunately, those who wanted some patience in the offseason of 2010-11 are suffering as well.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||When did we lose to PSU?||
Man, November hasn't been the worst month ever. OctoNovember has been the worst month ever.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Shouldn't keep a coach around just for the recruiting class||
But I admit that's the only reason I want to see Hoke still here next season. I just find it interesting that our HC is also the DL coach and he lost the top DLineman on the board. I guess trotting out Glenn Steele's and Rob Renes' names were not a strong enough recruiting tactic.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Texas can pay more||
They're more desperate than Alabama. All that money left over from the Pony Express scandal will find a new home in Saban's bank account by February.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||^^^This^^^||
If you go just outside of this 20 year window, you know what you find? Another national title for Alabama (1992). Us? Go back to the late 40s. Bo came close many years, but even he had his fair share of tough 3-4 loss seasons. We've been a consistent program, not elite. Elite for Michigan was probably the 70s and the period from the late 80s to early 90s (1988-92).
|3 weeks 5 days ago||You can't tell that to a 18 yo kid||
If he started paying attention to college football 10 years ago, at age eight, in Virginia of all places, he wouldn't care about our history. That's as much SEC territory as it is ACC or Big East. We're not an elite program anymore. We weren't elite when LC left. And we didn't close the deal in 2006. Once OSU started handing it to us on a yearly basis and we couldn't escape September without a loss, we lost elite status. We have a good brand name that kids recognize, which gets them on campus. But UCLA is a good brand name in college hoops and they haven't sniffed elite status for a long time.
Alabama has three national titles in four years, with a demolishing of Sparty in the middle of that. Every year, they're churning out first round draft picks. Best team in the most adored/hated conference in the country. And they're Alabama's professional football team. To top it off, they have Nick Saban. I don't think 1997 registers with someone who was a couple years old at the time.

Jim Harbaugh, is that you?
|3 weeks 5 days ago||That was 2003||
We normally sign a lot of guys early and then late in the recruiting season, when the big names are ready to make a decision, there's no space for them even if there was space. I think Penn State does something similar, but a lot of southern schools seem to do the opposite. Maybe because of a larger talent pool?
But if you have to go back ten years, which I think was the year we snagged Henne and Breaston late, that makes me wonder why we seem to have our class mostly full already. That was a core for that great 2006 team. What happens if our class is full and we have no spots for Breaston or Henne?
Oh, and I consider November late because HS football seasons are ending so this is the period when a lot of kids start deciding and we're close to the end of another long recruiting period for a class.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Newsflash: We're no longer an elite program||
We're just a name school with cool helmets and a big stadium. Since Brady/Henson left, outside of the 2006 team, we've been more a name that people recognize than anything elite. Our name can get kids on campus, which is more than Indiana, Purdue or Minnesota can say.
But our conference is mediocre and we don't appear close to dominating it. Kids see that. They don't care about message board arguments. They care about wins, championships and getting to the pros. If we beat PSU and Nebraska, we're 8-1 and still in the race for a BCS at-large bid and the B1G title game. That's at least something to hang your hat on.
Kids don't want Texas Bowl swag.

Those stats matter most. Hell, even Barry Sanders had tons of negative rushing plays.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||We saw the offense Bo ran before Moeller||
It changed quite a bit after Moeller updated the offense from less wishbone and option to a more pro-style offense. Instead of quick, mobile QBs, we had Grbac, Collins... So you could see his imprints on the team before he took over as HC.
With Lloyd, the change was not as apparent. We basically ran the same read-react defense for years until Mattison and then Herrmann took over and we instituted more blitzes, especially zone-blitzes.
I wouldn't say Moeller was way better than Carr. But he was definitely a favorite to some of us.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Same lady who ran for Miss Teen America in 2007?|

that Matt Millen was not going to work out.
The only knock I had against Moeller was refuted a few years after he stepped down. I blamed him for our defensive transfers, like Trevor Pryce and to an extent David Bowens. Come to find out it was our DL and DC coach at the time.
For people who thought RichRod was out of place by running a no-huddle, up-tempo offense, Moeller employed the no-huddle. Even though it wasn't a "fast-break" offense, the pace they ran did make it difficult for defenses to swap out players.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Should I be laughing?||
There are people actually answering the OC question. Whatever, I'll dive in. Whoever designed our offense from 1990-1994, come on down. I don't care if that's Moeller, Cam Cameron or Elvis Grbac. I sure as hell know it wasn't Terry Malone. Those Michigan offenses were innovative for the time and especially the B1G.

Not just the Rose Bowl. 5-10 is not good by any standard. And he had zero NC's. So by some standards, that's a big hole in the resume. I think they're only small marks against his coaching record.
Plus, it doesn't help when you play on 98 yard fields and get phanton clipping calls go against you.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||I think Moeller's the best coach we've had post-Bo||
So I can agree with your sentiment if you started watching in 1989 or 1990. I still wish Matt Millen would've given him the Lions head coaching job full-time. I think he would've been an excellent HC in the NFL.

|4 weeks 1 day ago||If we hold our recruits||
In 2016, we'll have Morris handing off to our thunder and lightning (Derrick Green and Damien Harris) and throwing to our big matchup nightmares (Drake Harris and George Campbell). And when they're done scoring points, Peppers and hopefully Hand will be stopping opposing offenses.
To be honest, the only reason I want Hoke around is so we don't lose these recruits that are still committed to us. Since Borges doesn't do much on the recruiting front, we should be able to replace him as long as we get a good OC that can sell his offense to kids.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Problem with having The Game on turkey day wknd||
A lot of those kids will be gone. Same thing happened in 1995. I thought I was in Columbus with all the red in the stadium. I think a lot of the non-student season ticket holders and family of the players will be there. But when those truck drivers from Columbus show up willing to spend hundreds on tix, some folks will part with their them.

|4 weeks 1 day ago||Those losses in 1998 were more on the defense||
We couldn't handle Jarius Jackson or Donovan McNabb. They were mobile QBs in spread offenses. That's where you heard the "we can't defend mobile QBs" and "we can't stop the spread" start up. That's why we lost, not because of conservative offense. They were also our first two games of the season after after we replaced our starting QB and Woodson, not to mention some other key players.
In each loss that year, including the OSU game, we gave up over 30 points. And those teams were ranked at the time. There was progress made throughout the season. We beat top 10 Wisconsin and Penn State in November. In fact we outscored them 54-10. That shows progress. Now we can't score against statistically poor defenses.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Northwestern was always going to be tough||
This was going to be a tough game even when we thought we had a good team.
Considering Michigan has been to only three Rose Bowls as B1G champion since 1993 and won only one of them, maybe there needs to be some perspective about what this program has actually accomplished since the early 90s.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||B1G kinda sucked in 2010||
They were 3-5 counting OSU's win that they vacated, or at least I think they vacated. That's kinda mediocre.
I doubt next year's game will be so bad. They will lose a lot off their defense and our O-line should be bigger, more mature and able to hold their own better.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Where did you hear that many were anti-RR?||
I can see them being anti-losing though. Just never saw the quotes or anything from reputable sources.
If anything, I think that if we have another poor year next year, people will stay quiet on the "Michigan Man" front.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Are you saying this would be a bad thing?||
Because of the whole "Michigan Man" meme, everyone looked at Greg Mattison's time with Michigan, completely forgetting the part where he ditched us for ND. Just because someone spent some time in A2, that doesn't make them the best person for the job. But I would say this though. I would like to see either Stan Parish or Cam Cameron as the OC next year. They run pro-style offenses, not MANBALL -- whatever that is. Stan worked with Griese, Dreisbach, Brady and Henson. And Cam Cameron worked with Grbac and Todd Collins.

|4 weeks 3 days ago||No||
He'll be back in EL after 2-3 years of that crap. Let him go to the Pac-12 so he can torment Oregon some.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Parrish would listen||
Only if Hoke is still as hands off as he is now. Parrish got overruled in that 2000 collapse at Purdue when he still wanted to throw in the second half up 18 and LC wanted to stay on the ground. Not the only time there's been conflict.
Parrish was QB coach during the Griese, Henson, Brady years so that would be another bonus.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Hoke is 2-1 vs N.D.||
There was that debacle last year when Denard threw 5-6 INTs and we couldn't replace him because our best backup QB was playing wide receiver. Hoke signed off on that brilliant move.
It that winning percentage came from playing in the SEC or even Pac-12, it would hold more weight. But winning % is paper thin considering the competition so these three years. We've been able to win the pillow fights, not the heavyweight bouts.
OSU hasn't lost a game with Urban Meyer. That's impressive. And Meyer is shredding the B1G with the spread, something that we went away from because of the "spread can't work in the B1G, we're Michigan fergodsakes, MANBALL" garbage.
I'll give Hoke and his staff credit for one thing. They are doing a better job in recruiting top talent and players that seem to want to stick around. I would've loved to have seen Drake Harris, George Campbell and others spread out all over the field playing catch me if you can. Now I'm just hoping the system we're running will allow them to use their talents.

Be physical and outmuscle Michigan. That's the blueprint to winning that game. There's a reason why the team that wins the rushing game has a +90% winning percentage. The problem is that they have experienced talent and solid coaching to match that physicality.
If we did not suffer losses to transfers or career ending injuries the past six years, our performance would've been better regardless of our HC. I'm not a coach, but I'm sure there's a difference between having a bunch of 21-22 year olds matched up against 18-19 year olds.

Even if that pass is incomplete they have three more chances to advance the ball. PSU was lucky to win. If Stribling times his jump correctly, it's a pick -- game over.

I think this game was tight until the last couple of minutes. It was our first L of the season. I looked at the boxscore (http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/1999/12/11/duke-104-michigan-97). Depth was not something we had, so we would've needed everyone healthy to make a run at the tournament.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed||
I thought the Duke game in 1999 was a sign of things to come. Reminded me just a bit of the Fab Five's first game against Duke. If that team could've played the whole season together, an NCAA tournament berth would've been within reach.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Maybe another Darren Sproles?||
I know he's a few inches taller than Sproles, but he has the explosiveness. I'd like to see him in a system where he's used all over the field, similar to what the Lions are doing with Reggie Bush and the Saints with Sproles.

A nice win over a "name" program would help the bruised feelings on the team. But sometimes the W-L record can feel hollow or overrated. I can't remember too many games this year where I felt good after a win. ND might have been it.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe Nebraska and NW have pretty soft D-lines, so maybe we can at least build up the confidence of the O-line going into the OSU game.
Maybe I'm crazy. I'm still holding on to a 5% chance that Sparty loses two more games and we win out to force a three way tie atop the standings and give us a spot in the B1G title game.

That was our can't miss coach. Maybe SF can win the Super Bowl this year and he'll be willing to listen to Brandon this time. We could probably match whatever $$$ the 49ers could pay.
As much as Borges gets blame, what can he do with that offensive line? His #2 receiver was lost before the season began. As good as Funchess looks, he is still a true sophomore. I'm not crazy about Borges, but I don't know what else you can do with a pedestrian OL.
But Hoke is the position coach for the DL, and the results there have likewise been pedestrian. If you're going to coach a position, it should be one of the top units, not whatever it is right now.

I think you could fairly reason we had chances in those games, but here's the problem: If we kept Gardner at QB (And remember he played well at Illinois in 2011), we may have won those games. Here's an article about Devin after the Illinois game that year: http://espn.go.com/colleges/michigan/football/story/_/id/7227064/devin-gardner-michigan-wolverines-beat-illinois-fighting-illini
What I'm saying is that we may have won those games if the coaching staff did not make the ill-advised move of moving our talented backup QB to wide receiver.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Not sure how Iowa 2012 was a red letter game||
They were rather awful last year and once again a bottom feeder in the B1G. Fact is, we were two miracle finishes away from being 6-6 in the regular season last year. I would give Hoke next year to turn this thing around. If he can't, Brandon seriously has to consider if there is anyone out there that can get the program to the next level.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Hoke's taken too much flack for that||
Treseel called us out the first day he was hired. OSU fans loved it. ESPN/ABC loved it. It was a great comment.

|5 weeks 1 day ago||Nick Saban beat UM twice||
Without needing some help from the officials. His team in 1999 was very very good. So he bought low, sold high with Sparty. Those LSU and Alabama teams were average at best when he got there.
And all he did with Miami was take a team that was 4-12 to 9-7 the next season. And they might have made the playoffs the next year if his QBs weren't a broken down Culpepper, Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon. Those teams can in no way compare to the teams Pacells, Johnson and Bellichek had. All three of those guys won when they had great QB play. Phil Simms, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady helped those men look pretty good.
Saban's a great coach. He was a terrific d-coordinator before becoming a head coach. Argue his winning percentage over two years if you want, but I would take him coaching the Lions or Michigan any day.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Mattison's track record is not as a blitzing DC||
In his first stint with MIchigan, we played a read/react defense. Not a lot of blitzing but more of read where the ball goes and attack. That first puts an incredible amount of pressure from your front four to get to the QB and then pressure on the back seven to cover for extended periods of time.
I heard the opposite argument when RichRod was here. We seemed to blitz a lot more, but got burned more as well.
After the Indiana shootout and this debacle, it feels like 2010 all over again. Only difference is that Hoke will still have the support of the administration and the players won't quit because they don't feel they're playing for a lame duck HC.

Saban was 2-3 against him, which was good enough to be considered a winning record in East Lansing.
He left because we were the top dog in the state and he was good enough to go somewhere else where he wouldn't have that same in-state competition. He bought low, sold high, and got a real payday. Only coach LC helped force out was John Cooper. And I would have sacrificed a win against OSU if it meant five more years of him and we never see Tressel on the sidelines.

Though Iowa does have a winning record. Until I see Sparty shut down a good offense outside of the B1G, I will hold the the belief that they benefit from playing in a bad conference with gift wrapped schedules. No OSU or PSU this year.
Our D struggles with something State doesn't have. Mobile quarterbacks or spread offenses. It doesn't take a lot of creativity to see how we win this. Don't turn the ball over and win.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Dileo||
If Gallon or Funchess gets double covered, we'll need another threat to make them pay. If Dileo gets loose in the middle, that may help loosen things up on the edges and help the running game.
I have a hunch we'll be in a lot of max protect to start, so that means the backs are probably staying in to block. We start burning them, that should stop a lot of their blitzes and free our backs to do more than block or run for -3 yards.

As an SMC grad, let me tell you that you're not coming out of college with that degree commanding 30-40k unless you have major connections.

I'm pretty sure Sparty Stadium isn't full of just cow farmers alumni so that's a stupid argument whenever they give it. But to be honest, I do get annoyed when a non-MSU alum gives me crap about MSU-UM. Do you know how annoying it is to have a relative say from 2002-2006 that MSU has a better football team and this "will be the year"?
When it comes to talking crap about academics, saying one is better than the other, I do believe you should have a degree from one of those institutions or plan on attending before jumping in that fire. Don't talk about how UM is greater than MSU and you went to U Phoenix.

So it's a bit hard to compare. Blue blood programs can do what Kentucky did. Michigan football is getting back to that status. It's going to take a bit longer (hopefully just one more deep NCAA tourney run in 2014) to get back to that level.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||This just means we have to make another deep NCAA run||
There's no shame in losing kids to Kentucky, IU or even UCLA. They're the winningest programs in hoops for a reason. If you spend a couple days in Kentucky during hoops season, you'll understand how hard it is to beat that. It's like OSU football in Columbus. They're treated like a pro team.
It's not about under the table dealings. Combine a coach with an NCAA title ring and multiple players who left school early for the pros with that environment, and you get your pick of players.

I want to believe they cheat.
But there was little chance we would have made it to the MNC at 13-0. Looks at OSU. If any combination of Alabama, Florida State and Oregon runs the table, we get shut out. In fact, a one loss SEC team would get in over an undefeated OSU.
The B1G is officially a pillow fight league. At least that's the perception.
If you read Mark Schlabach yesterday, you'll see another articble about how in-conference losses in the SEC are apparently the result of playing other star-studded teams. They're so good that they beat up on each other (ie. It's not fair that the SEC is so freaking awesome). In the B1G, if OSU loses to anyone in the conference, they suck and should walk the plank.
That perception only changes when we're back where people are accustomed to seeing us and we start winning some real non-conference games.

This year's starting rotation was stacked. It was great last year. Those teams he had in Pittsburgh were awesome. I don't need to run to a wikipedia page or be immensely smart to know that he had a running feud with Carlos Guillen in the media in 2008, mismanaged the collapse of 2009, destroyed Alex Avila's knees two years ago and poorly handled Miguel Cabrera this year.
He was good, but he was very fortunate to manage in the weakest division in baseball with one of the highest payrolls. IMO, considering the division the Tigers play in, they should make the playoffs. Just one WS win in eight years, with the teams he had, is disappointing.
|7 weeks 23 hours ago||1,769–1,728||
That does not equal first ballot HOF. First ballot HOFs do more than win one WS title. First ballot HOFs get to at least one World Series with Barry Bonds. First ballot HOFs should be able to have their team prepared to do better than one WS win in two tries.
Since you mention Dusty Baker. His winning percentage is higher than Leyland's. And, like Leyland, he dislikes advanced stats and metrics. I'm glad he's gone. We have the best starting rotation and position player on the planet. I just wish Leyland would've done this last year so we could've grabbed Francona.
|7 weeks 23 hours ago||I wonder how the series would've been||
if Leyland would've shut him down for a couple weeks in September while most of the baseball world suggested. Leyland was so opposed to advanced metrics, but he should've considered the Tigers had a winning record with him out of the lineup. He played just as big of a role in Cabrera being limited as a manager who overuses certain pitchers. Leyland blew that decision.
There's also the 2009 collapse in September. The 2008 locker room was as toxic as anything seen this side of John Kuester coached team. The allegiance to Brandon Inge and now Don Kelly.
I appreciate his time here. And it's not his fault that Prince Fielder turned into a 300lb statue. But with the lineup Dombrowski put together over the years, they should have more to show than just two WS appearances with no title.
|7 weeks 23 hours ago||You can't be 20 games over .500 for your career||
and get into the Hall of Fame. I appreciate his time in Detroit, but he handled the Cabrera injury situation terribly and butchered the eight inning of Game 2 of the LCS. And I'm mystified at how V-Mart was still hitting behind Prince despite his struggles. I still don't know how he held his job after managing the collapse of 2009. To me, his lack of WS titles despite having the Killer B's in Pittsburgh and the best hitter/pitcher on the planet the last three years are marks against him. Combining that with his mediocre win-loss record should keep him out of Cooperstown.

It was a sad day when the went to the purple helmets and the rest of their uniform was reminded me of the Minnesota State Golden Eagles.

I don't believe in just making someone a statistic like you are doing. I've had a father and multiple grandparents die recently from cancer and it was not breast cancer. Instead of sitting behind a computer and getting all whiny about breast cancer getting all this attention, I support those other causes in whatever ways I can.
It may not be right that breast cancer has a whole month for a major fundraising drive. Life isn't fair. Getting breast cancer isn't fair. NBCAM isn't going away until there's a cure. So do something to publicize those other causes out there. There's 11 other months right?
It's like voting. If you're not going to vote, don't complain about who's elected. If you're not going to work to publicize another cause, don't whine about breast cancer coverage.

It's not a coincidence that the year after he bolted from Michigan to Notre Dame for the same position our defense was the best in the country. We introduced more blitz packages, especially zone blitzes. He comes from the conservative school of bend, don't break. That works when you have the superior athletes on the field. When you don't, you need to be creative and mix things up a bit more.
|7 weeks 5 days ago||You don't get sacked on a quick pass to the WR||
All you're doing is throwing to the WR as soon as you get the ball. This is not a quick slant or any type of pattern run by the WR. You're just firing the ball out there to the WR standing on the line of scrimmge with a DB 10 yards away. Worst case scenario there is the receiver is unable to get past the DB out there and you only gain a few yards. On the flip side, the receiver gets past the DB and scoots into the end zone or close to it because there's no one else out there besides maybe a safety in the center of the field. Either way, PSU would have to respond to a playcall like that by either playing press coverage on the outside or loosening up inside the box.
On a play like that, it's impossible to get sacked. And it's impossible to throw an INT.

If you live in the state of Michigan, it's maize and blue all over the place. We never say it's too much.
Millionaires and billionaires donate money to the school and football program. The most a lot of people will say is why not give more to the other sports or an academic program on campus. But we don't say it's too much money for the school.
People complain about how much the CEO of Komen makes, but we're paying our football coach millions. We never say it's too much.
We post topics whenever a classic game is coming on BTN or ESPN Classic. Those posts didn't get downvoted (unless it's a game we lost).
I could go on and on and on. We support this school and it's programs because it's our love, our passion, something we've been affected/inspired by.
It's pretty hypocritical to teabag breast cancer awareness month over saturation.

He's not their position coach, so he's not teaching them technique and fundamentals. But I do not believe he's putting his OL in a position to succeed. More 3 step drops, read option plays, bubble screens (read: quick plays) can take some pressure off the line.
Borges loves 5 step drops and the downfield passing game. So did Al Davis. And look at what happened to the Raiders as he became obsessed with it.
|7 weeks 5 days ago||I don't think people forget other causes of death||
If that's the case, then those people need to read a little bit more. But 40,000 women still die each year from it which means a lot of families and friends are affected. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, which is also large. And unlike some diseases that can be caused by our own vices, such as lung cancer or emphesyma (smoking), the causes of breast cancer are not as easy to identify.
For those who have short memories or just weren't around 20+ years ago, breast cancer was not talked about much. You heard more about the Cystic Fibrosis foundation back in the 80s and early 90s. The Detroit sports teams did a lot of work with them. HIV got more publicity in the mid-to late-90s.
While people want to complain about coverage given to this disease, breast cancer death rates have gone down over the years which is where the focus should be. Now if people feel breast cancer gets the lion share of the publicity, then stop sounding like a neanderthal and do something about those other causes you support.

and we probably get a big gain out of it. You're right; it used to be a bread and butter play for us.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||2007 Rose Bowl||
That was one of the more conservative game plans I've ever seen. 3-3 at halftime and only USC remembered their passing game. To be fair, USC was getting pressure, causing us to keep our TE in to block most of the game.
