3 weeks 2 days ago 1983

An 8-4 1982 season, coming off a loss in the Rose Bowl in January 1983, mid-way through the 1983 season, the stands were packed early against foes mighty and meek equally.  No amount of beers in hand (or apples, marshmallows, rolls of toilet paper) prevented or made it easier for students to arrive prior to kick-off.

Grasping at straws, my friend.

3 weeks 2 days ago Half Agreeing!

Maybe not the start time issue, but the YouTube generation (as mentioned in the other Sorority DrunkSlut thread), that they somehow consider Row A premiere seating, which the rest of us (Class of '87 here) passed on their way onto the field to pull goalposts down (in a drunken frenzy, admittedly).  The current generation of students want their 15 minutes of fame, borne of watching from really awful vantage points, via 5 seconds of post-game photography or video from the team celebrations/singing of Hail to the Victors...

Here on mgo, we've made Lloyd Brady and Facepalm Guy actual t-shirted memes.  Which student WOULDN'T want that kind of fame/infamy/fame?

3 weeks 2 days ago 1983 - Double Post

Sorry about that.

But the point stands...fill the stands!

3 weeks 2 days ago But

where's the 6-pack, 12-pack, case, 1/4 barrel, fifth of schnapps, etc.?

3 weeks 3 days ago "Good Seats"

Don't agree with you often, DB, but in this case (Class of '87 here), fully agree with the "what constitutes good today" argument.  Like you summarized, Fr was end zone, and the holy land was Senior or Grad seats in Section 26 (or so).  Rows 25-50.

Maybe the YouTube see-me-on-the-internets generation insists Row A is the place to be...who knows?

To other comments above, the early arrivers will pack in the lower section/lower rows, and peter out around the corner, but arrive an hour before the game?  You'll have your choice of Row 25 in any section, for however many friends you'll want to bring with you.

But I don't think for a moment that ALL the students are mashed into rows A through 60, leaving 30 rows empty above.  Those 3500-5500 no shows make a visual impact, regardless.

And if the no-show splits go among each of the undergrad classes, Freshmen had no excuse to not show or be on time, as they had no "bummer seasons" to endure.  Sophs had just enjoyed a banner 2011 season, so what was the excuse?  Lousy sked?  Juniors got to see some wins with RR, and enjoy a rebirth of M Football in 2011...why miss games or significant portions of them?  Lame excuses abound.  And thus, they reap what they sow.

3 weeks 4 days ago My HAIL Points!!!

What happens to them?

Honestly, we're going to see the upper portions of each section empty, with the few last row fanatics sitting up in Row 92 (or whatever it is), and a whole lotta space in between.

The problem I see is that a certain percentage of students miss a game.  If it's 15% or 20%, how does the AD determine that student can't buy tickets the following year?

As stated, this may fill the first few rows (10-15) by kick-off, with mostly full up to the portals at the same time, but virtually empty above them.

To my mind, football Saturdays are a significant part of the college student experience, and every student should/will get the opportunity to buy tickets.  Maybe the raised prices will cull the fence sitter from ordering tickets.  Who knows...

Finally, it'll be interesting to see what comes into the email from the AD in late July, when they finally know how many non-renewals took place.  I'm expecting there will be season ticket packages avaialable at that time.

3 weeks 4 days ago Obscurity

lies in the eyes of the beholder.

'bones heal, pain is temporary, [and] chicks dig scars...'

is a quote from Evel Knievel...published in his book in 1999.

Googling the "chicks dig scars" portion doesn't present mgo within the first 7-8 links, so it's not an obscure mgo meme, specifically.

Also seen on The Simpsons, for those who enjoyed that reference/advice from their "Evel" to Bart.  Second season, aired in 1990.

4 weeks 4 days ago Email

Arrived at 1:34 p.m. ET

but keeping with the chain of comments.

Flip Saunders is 58.

Fred Hoiberg is 40.

Shaka Smart is 35.

Richard Pitino is 30...Minny was looking everywhere, at everyone.  Richard Pitino isn't on the short list with those other guys, but is now definitely on the "flyer" or wing and prayer list of new coaches to watch for the next couple years.

14 weeks 1 day ago All the GMatt Love Today

Makes me lament that Michigan let not only Mattison go, but let his Recruiting Coordinator predecessor, Bob Chmiel, go...both to ND.  Looking back on defenses between Mattison's stints (who can forget so many torchings), whether we could have had even better recruiting classes than we did...  Yet, for paying a partial schollie for his daughter to play softball at ND, we let him go instead.  I think he would have picked up plenty of ideas/schemes/formations had he been here the entire time...sadly, the pay-our-coordinators-a-competitive-wage wasn't part of the mindset until 2 years ago (how insane is THAT statement!).

My brother and I have discussed and agreed that having an awesome original (Mattison) is better than a half-rate clone (let's not list ALL of them out, shall we?).  Should have kept him close for the better part of the past two decades.

P.S.  Having shown my agedness with the Chmiel reference, he was also part of Bo's staffs during the 80's.  Could that man pick stellar performers to be around him or what?

P.P.S.  I think the reason Chmiel left was the NCAA eliminated, or proposed eliminating, the Recruiting Coordinator position - as a stand alone and thus had to be integrated into an existing coaches role.  OK, I'll let the younguns back on these intertubes to discuss with each other.

16 weeks 1 day ago Recollection

may be hazy, but didn't Brian come around with the update that the curriculum of the "student-athlete" playing football at Stanford took the similar track of classes as those ND or U-M?  And though my eyes may be getting older, those Stanford players with mohawks and tatted arms hardly looked to be the 4.0 GPA/1400+ SAT achievers that Harbaugh seemed to indicate were base requirements for admission into Stanford in the first place.

16 weeks 2 days ago So true!

Living in central OH during the 90's, it was amazing then, too, how vibrant the secondary market was.  IIRC, recent alums at that time were allotted ticket opportunities for exactly ONE game per season, not of their choosing.  Yikes!  Full season ticket packages were doled out only to the big dollar donors of the day.  Don't knowif that's changed since or not.

16 weeks 4 days ago Mark Twain*

Lies, damn lies and statistics.  (Not you, JMB...leagues and sponsors, etc.)

Comerica Park has a capacity of 41,782.  Multiply by 81 home games, you get 3,384,342.  I don't think that the Coma had over 89% seats filled, on average, for every home game.  They do well, no question, but watching all sports, there are TONS of empty seats.  If someone were to ask me, I'd say that the attendance is now "counted differently" than back in the days of yore, as you point out.  Truly, it was only 1-2 decades ago that 2M in attendance was the gold standard for MLB teams.

*He may have said it, or repeated it, or been the first to have written it down.

16 weeks 4 days ago True but...

they're using Michigan Athletic Department numbers...tickets sold versus actual attendees.  Corporate ticket grabs may mean more money, but ultimately fewer seats filled.  Using your example, look in the background of ANY baseball game, up to and including the wildcard playoff games, and you'll see row upon row of empty seats.  As many have mentioned, it's kind of a hassle to do all the ancillary things to get there, unless you're committed to the whole dealio.  And this goes for MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA and CFB.  Parking costs money.  Dining out prior (or tailgating) costs money.  Even drive time has its costs...especially upon departure postgame.  These aren't 2-3 hour slices of time, unless TV/DVR is there for you...it's 5-6 hours, all the way up to 10 hours (for the hardcore tailgater).  (Forget if you're the host of your tailgate...packing starts the night before or in the wee hours at o'dark thirty.)

18 weeks 3 days ago Goalies

Since the aughts, we've often seen the NC team have either an (eventual) NHL starter or back-up goalie in net during the drive to that trophy (witness MSU with Miller in net).  Michigan has had several of those goalies, but only Turco was a long-term NHL starter.  Montoya and Shields did their parts in the majors, but Hogan was more indicative of typical M backstops.  Baby Jesus was awesome, but time will tell his place in the bigs.

My $0.02.

19 weeks 1 hour ago "Marketplace"

What you and ATL relate screams "local chamber of commerce/bowl committee provide scads of free tickets to local sponsors/businesses/NFL season ticket holders at low/no cost."

My impression of scalpers is they won't eat the buy-in cost of the tickets they have in hand, if someone is offering a reasonable amount of green for them.  Reading the varied commentary, including Mr. Beeks, I gather quite a few people were happy to not sell...my experience upon viewing StubHub a couple hours prior to kick-off (from Clarkston, for giggles) showed stacks of tickets (some sellers had 14 or 20 seats available) meaning either a broker bought them, or they were freebies that current ticket holders were trying to off-load at a tidy profit to themselves.  These were all priced over $100/ticket...obviously the prices dropped in the last couple hours run-up to kick-off.

Maybe the bowl dynamic is different than the home ticket market dynamic...my sense is this is a fairly true statement, regardless of venue (except maybe OSU, as they have FAR more demand than seats available).

My $0.02.

19 weeks 1 day ago NSFMF

Just positing a theory...would Darius have shown the same learning/growth curve by staying?  My sense is it's hard to say/confirm with any semblance of certainty.  We know M definitely could have used his talent, fo sho.  Sometimes, the player needs to buy into his coaches direction, rather than his own teenage knuckleheadedness (see BWC for a prime example)...and Jake Long for the other end of the spectrum.  Different strokes for different (or diff'rent) folks!

19 weeks 1 day ago Atsa

OK.  I pondered whether or not to get into that, just because the slight mishap detracted not a whit to the overall and complete destruction of our overmatched opponent.

Keep up the excellent content, young man!

19 weeks 1 day ago Hate to be "That Guy"

Tenets, not tennants.  Though the mental imagery, to be honest, amuses...

21 weeks 1 day ago Options

Where I think this lockout differs from the last one is that the players, or at least, the better/best players, have options, and they executed...in droves.  According the ESPN list of players now playing elsewhere, it's over 160...forgot, maybe even over 170 players.  That works out to a smidge under 25% of the leagues players are overseas.  (Another way to look at it...the top line of every team, and goalie, is now playing elsewhere.)

Of course, the guys playing over there, mostly, aren't playing for the love of the sport, but for a paycheck...and probably not pennies/pfennigs/rubles/euros...but thousands or hundreds of thousands of them.  And those leagues are wise to the gambit, and have outlawed short-term contracts now, too.

This farce is directly the result of  NHL leadership/ownership incompetence...the owners, the board of governors, Bettman, et al.  What should be interesting is to see if hockey comes back this year or next, will the talent come back or not...and the resultant impact on attendance/ticket prices, etc.
