Even if those guys could just go laterally, it still took months of LC begging other coaches to hire Mike Debord as an ASSISTANT Line Coach and Moeller as an ASSISTANT TE Coach for the Ravens. RR's subordinates got jobs (laterals) within weeks of January 2011...yes, even Gibson.
Coaches typically bring their own in, which is another reason LC, before he left, made sure Sailor Bill and the AD paid all the coaches an extra year salary prior to his announcing his retirement.

I recall someone posting during August that we couldn't/shouldn't look at the prices on SH at that time, that the prices would be far different during the week of the game....so, being a little OCD, I tracked prices...daily. (I said I was OCD)
Our tickets could be had for prices in the teens, mostly during the DAY of the game...except for the Coke game. I captured a screenshot of a pair of tickets for PSU for $4 each. Otherwise, every game was available for under $20 per ticket. This is probably earlier in the week than previous games this season.
To my mind, this exposes the flaw in the thinking of the season ticket buyer/defender...regardless of the appeal of having odd year MSU/OSU and the slightly improved OOC opponent (note I didn't say OOC opponents - plural)...there remains other B1G games against Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue and Illinois that will appear on the schedule...for prices Blue in Lansing presented above. Seriously.

|2 years 30 weeks ago||Truth||
We didn't renew this season, after 20+ years as season ticket holders, and you're absolutely right...the internal, personal obligation to make good on that investment by going to every game drops when you imagine you'll buy tickets on the open market on a game-by-game basis. DAB has screwed things up in massive fashion, and this year's empty seats and gimmick flash sales are only the beginning.

I thought for sure, in January, we'd have received personal calls at dinner time from "student-athletes" imploring our continued donations (not even a low- or mid-level marketing staffer, of which we now have dozens). Nope. Silence. But I WAS told my last chance via AD email, (kind of like a MLB Steve Howe last chance) the opportunity to renew my PSD was the day before the pre-sale of Man U v. Real Madrid tickets...3 months after the original due date.
I think your guesstimate is pretty accurate for the 2014 renewal period. Don't forget, the AD had PLENTY of tickets in hand prior to the 2013 season, and couldn't GIVE them away for that game against Akron last year, even with a healthy cut in prices to buy a 4 pack, get programs, hot dogs/drinks and a 3-D poster (at least one poster, possibly 4).
No worries, mate. Cue the humble brag bras to ride to the rescue in mere moments, telling us how they'll increase their ticket purchases THIS year, with THIS slate of games.
|3 years 3 days ago||Vacation||
Took a vacation this year already with the PSD money, and we may still look for opportunities for a Wings ticket package. And we'll still go to games, just via Stub Hub.
|3 years 3 days ago||PSD Rebate||
Should have been the very first thing they thought of when this team was scheduled to play this slate of lousy games at home.
Leave it to Dave Brandon to ignore that little fact.
|3 years 4 days ago||Did not renew||

Going the StubHub route this year. Will save $$$.
People, please note: During the 2013 season, the mgoblue dynamic ticket model had between hundreds and THOUSANDS** of seats available on the Thursday/Friday before the game, EVERY game. This means that not only were plenty of seats available to add to your haul last year, but you'd have had better games to enjoy with your upgrade/increase. Don't increase this year, because there are now even MORE tickets available, with this lousy slate. Buy next year.
**Akron announced attendance was below 109,000, including the Ath Dept counting of every hanger on, recruit, player, band member, media member (which usually takes our tallies up over 113k). And that was WITH the $200 for 4 seats, programs, 3D poster and hot dog inducement.

The AD will change their tune either when DAB is gone, or when they've had a few years of having to work to make the stadium appear full, due to declining sales of season ticket packages.
|3 years 12 weeks ago||Absolutely Correct||
The 2013 Akron game showed us that. $200 for 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 programs and, as an added bonus/late addition, a 3D poster, too (possibly 4 posters, not sure). And with all that, the announced/inflated attendance was 107k. Meaning we were still short by 5000 buyers of selling out.
Read a rumor here that "recent grads" would get an invite to buy via lower cost PSD...but it's not necessarily the PSD that makes it such a lousy deal, it's the whole cost added together...with the lousy opponents factored in.
I scoff at those who made money selling tickets as well (per other post)...these people probably never lose in Vegas, either. Like you posited, you'd have to sell ND, OSU well before the season or before the losses accumulate.
I also discount those who will now suddenly buy extra seats THIS YEAR. There were plenty of seats available to add to your season ticket order last year...this with a schedule worth paying some money for. Why pay this year? Those extra seats will still be available next year, too!
|3 years 12 weeks ago||Remember||
Paying for Dave Brandon's folly is not the same as buying tickets in the open market and attending. You can still go to all the games you want, just pay less, same experience all the way around. And you may even find a view or two that are unique that you'd never have tried otherwise!

This is where DB's strategization to wring every dime out of the paying customer pockets, including students: Many of the posters on this board, many, if not most of the fans sitting in the other 85k seats, are alums...alums who went to as many home games as they could. Who developed the love of the game, love of the team, love for Bo, Yost, the stadium, etc.
Today's students, pushed to the fringe, won't have those memories, won't have nearly the positive glow burning within, to share this with their own kids, to establish a dream of not waiting until fall rolls around, so we can go to 6-7-8 home games again.
Today, DB thinks selling off dynamically priced Akron game packages to some family from Okemos will make lifelong fans. Dream on...
|3 years 20 weeks ago||As we've discussed here||
My grand idea was for DB to come up with a "Loyalty Rebate" on the PSD to those of us who've held season tickets for over X years. Didn't happen.

|3 years 21 weeks ago||Long, but not too long response||
We’ve shared a few comments (Sec 1, too) with regard to the growing disappointment with several/many things related to M Football and the current handling by the AD.
As you request, let’s hope this doesn’t turn into some flame attractant! What I see is that many people realize a) there is no waiting list (announced attendance for Akron – 107k+ attests to the fact that the AD didn’t sell out all the season ticket packages they could have)…and b) the fact that there are singles available (purchase up to 4 for Saturday’s game, down from up to 6 for Minn or Neb)…so c) it tells people that the pride felt at having the largest crowd in America is not going to be ours much longer. And finally d) they want you and me to continue making that happen.
I’ve bought tickets post-graduation and been a season ticket buyer 21-22 straight years. My Victors Club point total stands over 110…so I’ve given, and given a lot/quite enough. As can be seen on the ticket price chart, I’ve been there, paying for all the Akrons, Appy States, et al. Attending all those games. No one can question my loyalty or my devotion to the program.
I guess it was a pipe dream that the AD would offer us a “loyalty rebate” or discount off the PSD, considering the foul 2014 home slate, and our years of support. Fat chance, eh?
I can’t answer why people have lashed out at you or others for not re-upping…though they tend not to be season ticket holders, nor longer term as you and me…other than what I typed in the first para.
Hope you and the missus will make a trip or three every year, but like you, the willingness to part with $2400/yr (or more) for 4 seats has evaporated. We’ll buy via the open market, let someone else donate. I may donate to the College of Engineering, but not to the AD until we have the product on the field, and the product throughout, to make the experience the rich and tradition-filled event it was while attending school.

As stated above, thousands of tickets were available...still are, for several games. Don't let anyone fool you into believing demand is so high that you can't find a ticket. Just keep looking...scalpers were standing at Stadium and Main as we walked in, charging VERY little.
|3 years 23 weeks ago||Mundane?||
I didn't see mundane in there.
Circle K added things I overlooked to include...the uniformz and unretired numbers BS. The halftime show which evolved into an advertisement for "Victors for Michigan" donation/shame/guilt grab.
It's all slick packaging, advertising the AD and lame self-promotion, rather than organic gameday activities and retaining the pageantry and everything else we all loved about football Saturdays as students.
The fantasy the AD is now imagineering, that bringing your 5-12 year old will make a Michigan fan for life...if they can't afford tickets, there will be more empty seats.
And I repeat for those who insist all tickets will be sold...at least 6000 seats are unsold and part of the single tickets available for purchase via Dynamic Pricing. My row in Section 20, from my 4th seat to the aisle, ten seats...five were occupied. For Nebraska. With an 18 game home winning streak. That model of fandom is not sustainable...and fans will vote with their wallets, once their butts have departed.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Thanks||
I've been reading of your increasing dismay in full agreement.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||When Someone Wants to Sponsor Me||
Please reach out here on mgoblog.
I paid $2650+ for 4 seats in Section 20 (around the goal line, ~40 rows up). Except for ND, this year, I couldn't sell an extra or a pair for anywhere close to face/paid/greater than $40 each. The dynamic model is selling tickets for less than I paid (Akron) including the PSD, and there were still thousands left prior to that game.
Anyone who thinks there's a waiting list, or hundreds/thousands of people/families interested in obtaining season tickets (replete with PSD payment), please, continue to keep that public face, insistent that my fandom is in question.
I have earned Fandom Endurance Merit badges over the years, paid PSD's, been a season ticket holder over 20 years. I have some number of Victors Club points that put me in the upper quartile/quintile of all Victors Club donors.
And yet...I'm being charged a premium price for an inferior product. I get the following:
HD screens with Dave Brandon, stupid costumed students and a few young kids, few actual replays (let alone game stats that are current to the action on the field)
Play calling that is average at best
Rawk music from dog groomers
Splashy videos telling me how my donations make life great for the rowing team, or womens field hockey
"New traditions" that don't take hold, in a sleazy, marketing-driven attempt to replace ACTUAL traditions.
How does all that make my Saturday great?
At the end of the day, I'll buy tickets on the spot market, either StubHub or some other avenue (mgoblog ticket spreadsheet), and spend the $2000 I save on Wings tickets or some other more satisfying endeavor.
See what I did there...still a fan, still supporting the team, my team. Just not getting fleeced by Dave Brandon and his band of henchmen. Thank you, no, I'll be happy to keep my money in my wallet for the next couple years until ticket prices normalize, and become more reasonable to the games actually being played on the field.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Entirely correct||
Always amazes me there are those who INSIST someone else will buy tickets if I forego the opp. Stunningly, on the dynamic mgoblue.com link, I could have bought 6 tickets to the Nebraska game if I wanted to. And I can buy up to 4 tickets for the OSU game.
Akron was a different story altogether...and 2014 is filled with Akrons, not ND's and OSU's.

There was a "Maize Out" against Wisconsin, and AT&T gave away tens of thousands of t-shirts. Probably wouldn't happen today, since the AD's brilliant HAIL program will give a student a free maize t-shirt AFTER the student attends all 6-7-8 home games (on time), >12 home basketball games, >8 home hockey games and >6 non-revenue producing games. They wouldn't want AT&T horning in on their incentivization!
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Mostly agree||
The bevvy cups from years past had Pontiac logos, Coke logos, now they have Coke and Sodexho logos. Plenty of corporate names/logos on the pillars in the concourses (Marathon Oil comes to mind). The ATM's are brought to you by Huntington Bank. Actually, U-M has been very aggressive in keeping the air traffic to a minimum, citing FAA/Homeland Security concerns...which never seem to be a problem at Super Bowls over the past 10 years...but the AD can then cut out that free advertising for which they seem to think they're owed a cut.

|3 years 41 weeks ago||Calling All Scalper Entrepeneurs||
Not looking for the run of the mill guy selling tickets to a single game...more the budding capitalist who gobbles up dozens of tickets...how does his/her model work? Buy 40-100 tickets at prices as low as possible ($20 each?) and try to sell the first 50% of that weeks stack to break even, then sell the rest for the profit? In all my years, I've never sold a single or pair for anything close to face, let alone what I've paid for them. (Of course, family demand is far higher for UTL or OSU or even MSU games than the rest of the schedule...Big TEHHHNNNN be damned.) What I see is dynamic pricing would pull the buyer willing to pay the higher amount into the AD orbit, probably causing problems for the scalper to recoup his/her investment for that particular week. OTOH, IU, Rutgers and Maryland tickets will be in plentiful supply, and dynamic pricing won't apply...everyone who wants to go will get a ticket for the same low entry fee...$20. Comments and insights appreciated.

We have a winner! How the truth could get so muddled by the poster above is beyond me. The Woods riding the pine issue is one that still rankles to this day. I can't find the Belichek quote, but he excoriates LC for his treatment of Woods, IIRC, wondering wtf they were doing in AA.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||Double Take||
on the double asterisk. That's the average secondary market price for endzone seats? This consumer wants the raw data and the method of calculation. As I said above, I would have loved to be able to score $65/extra seat for any of the snacky cake opponents over the past 3-10 years. About the only time I can garner those numbers are OSU, MSU and ND...and then I've already got a slate of takers from within the extended family. They aren't going to make the trip/miss Sweetest Day/miss Halloween/whatever to see U-M vs. Akron.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||Possibly||
But those 8 packs of end zone seats that were presented...remember, for every ND and OSU, we have two CMU/Appy St/MD/RU on the schedule, too. Forgot...Indiana, too. I wish I had access to the various secondary markets the AD presents for probable prices for some of those less desirable games. I would have LOVED to get $65/ extra seat for every game last year bar 1-2.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||You, Sir, Are Correct||
Can't agree more, KT. Lots of hand-wringing in the Lexus household over the cubic dollars dropped on PSD's and seats for 4, Section 20. Add in tailgate expenses, possible dinners out and parking at AAG&O, and there are reasons for not taking primo vacations every year. DAB needs to be careful...I sense more and more people are going to cut back on how many seats they buy...my strategy for the future will be buying 2 instead of 4, and adding a StubHub or other means single as needed.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||Agreed||
Which is why my comment a bit farther below, I think the upper limit of people/fans/corps willing to pay PSD's has been met.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||How Believable?||
I don't know that I'd trust/believe everything written by Loch Dog and DAB. Selling end zone singles to "potential" fans won't actually amount to anything but a sucker paying too much for a single that could be latched onto via private sale or StubHub (not via U-M AD) for less. My crystal ball may be hazy, but I'm willing to argue with all these end zone seats being available today (in packs up to 8 seats, natch!), we've hit the upper limit of how many people are willing to pay PSL's to see U-M play the schedules they play.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||WOW Factor||
disagrees with you. DB's stated purpose for the mascot, jet-pack man, parachuting the football in, etc. is to excite and engage the next generation of Michigan football fan. Can't say there are that many non-affiliated young kids sitting in $95 seats, but you never know.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Please Don't Forget||
Not aimed at you, PFP...Stanford essentially did the same thing academically for their football players (as does ND) to offer, and the players enthusiastically enroll in, courses that are titled "Kinesiology" here, BGS or some such at ND and Stanford. My thoughts back in the uber-successful days of football for The Cardinal was that it seemed the tatted/mohawked football players didn't seem to share much in the way of culture or background with the student population in general. That thought still holds...
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Not surprised||
since it seemed enough end zone seat opportunities opened up that I was offered up to 8 seats for "non-premium games." I kind of wanted to open a new post to ask people to input the reasoning behind the seeming glut of tickets, but would guess first and foremost was the overall expense and essentially boiling it down to buying ticket(s) to 2-3 premium games for $5-600 each (or more) and getting 3-5 lousy throwaway games for free. Tough to justify the whole enchilada, year after year.
Edit: I have ~120 points, not sure if the new grad/letter winner points have kicked in yet or not. Another mgopost concept was to try to get an idea of the profile of the mgoreader, their graduation date (if applicable), whether or not they are mgostadiumattendees, how many priority points they have, etc.

An 8-4 1982 season, coming off a loss in the Rose Bowl in January 1983, mid-way through the 1983 season, the stands were packed early against foes mighty and meek equally. No amount of beers in hand (or apples, marshmallows, rolls of toilet paper) prevented or made it easier for students to arrive prior to kick-off.
Grasping at straws, my friend.
|4 years 4 days ago||Half Agreeing!||
Maybe not the start time issue, but the YouTube generation (as mentioned in the other Sorority DrunkSlut thread), that they somehow consider Row A premiere seating, which the rest of us (Class of '87 here) passed on their way onto the field to pull goalposts down (in a drunken frenzy, admittedly). The current generation of students want their 15 minutes of fame, borne of watching from really awful vantage points, via 5 seconds of post-game photography or video from the team celebrations/singing of Hail to the Victors...
Here on mgo, we've made Lloyd Brady and Facepalm Guy actual t-shirted memes. Which student WOULDN'T want that kind of fame/infamy/fame?

Don't agree with you often, DB, but in this case (Class of '87 here), fully agree with the "what constitutes good today" argument. Like you summarized, Fr was end zone, and the holy land was Senior or Grad seats in Section 26 (or so). Rows 25-50.
Maybe the YouTube see-me-on-the-internets generation insists Row A is the place to be...who knows?
To other comments above, the early arrivers will pack in the lower section/lower rows, and peter out around the corner, but arrive an hour before the game? You'll have your choice of Row 25 in any section, for however many friends you'll want to bring with you.
But I don't think for a moment that ALL the students are mashed into rows A through 60, leaving 30 rows empty above. Those 3500-5500 no shows make a visual impact, regardless.
And if the no-show splits go among each of the undergrad classes, Freshmen had no excuse to not show or be on time, as they had no "bummer seasons" to endure. Sophs had just enjoyed a banner 2011 season, so what was the excuse? Lousy sked? Juniors got to see some wins with RR, and enjoy a rebirth of M Football in 2011...why miss games or significant portions of them? Lame excuses abound. And thus, they reap what they sow.
|4 years 5 days ago||My HAIL Points!!!||
What happens to them?
Honestly, we're going to see the upper portions of each section empty, with the few last row fanatics sitting up in Row 92 (or whatever it is), and a whole lotta space in between.
The problem I see is that a certain percentage of students miss a game. If it's 15% or 20%, how does the AD determine that student can't buy tickets the following year?
As stated, this may fill the first few rows (10-15) by kick-off, with mostly full up to the portals at the same time, but virtually empty above them.
To my mind, football Saturdays are a significant part of the college student experience, and every student should/will get the opportunity to buy tickets. Maybe the raised prices will cull the fence sitter from ordering tickets. Who knows...
Finally, it'll be interesting to see what comes into the email from the AD in late July, when they finally know how many non-renewals took place. I'm expecting there will be season ticket packages avaialable at that time.

Makes me lament that Michigan let not only Mattison go, but let his Recruiting Coordinator predecessor, Bob Chmiel, go...both to ND. Looking back on defenses between Mattison's stints (who can forget so many torchings), whether we could have had even better recruiting classes than we did... Yet, for paying a partial schollie for his daughter to play softball at ND, we let him go instead. I think he would have picked up plenty of ideas/schemes/formations had he been here the entire time...sadly, the pay-our-coordinators-a-competitive-wage wasn't part of the mindset until 2 years ago (how insane is THAT statement!).
My brother and I have discussed and agreed that having an awesome original (Mattison) is better than a half-rate clone (let's not list ALL of them out, shall we?). Should have kept him close for the better part of the past two decades.
P.S. Having shown my agedness with the Chmiel reference, he was also part of Bo's staffs during the 80's. Could that man pick stellar performers to be around him or what?
P.P.S. I think the reason Chmiel left was the NCAA eliminated, or proposed eliminating, the Recruiting Coordinator position - as a stand alone and thus had to be integrated into an existing coaches role. OK, I'll let the younguns back on these intertubes to discuss with each other.

may be hazy, but didn't Brian come around with the update that the curriculum of the "student-athlete" playing football at Stanford took the similar track of classes as those ND or U-M? And though my eyes may be getting older, those Stanford players with mohawks and tatted arms hardly looked to be the 4.0 GPA/1400+ SAT achievers that Harbaugh seemed to indicate were base requirements for admission into Stanford in the first place.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||So true!||
Living in central OH during the 90's, it was amazing then, too, how vibrant the secondary market was. IIRC, recent alums at that time were allotted ticket opportunities for exactly ONE game per season, not of their choosing. Yikes! Full season ticket packages were doled out only to the big dollar donors of the day. Don't knowif that's changed since or not.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||Mark Twain*||
Lies, damn lies and statistics. (Not you, JMB...leagues and sponsors, etc.)
Comerica Park has a capacity of 41,782. Multiply by 81 home games, you get 3,384,342. I don't think that the Coma had over 89% seats filled, on average, for every home game. They do well, no question, but watching all sports, there are TONS of empty seats. If someone were to ask me, I'd say that the attendance is now "counted differently" than back in the days of yore, as you point out. Truly, it was only 1-2 decades ago that 2M in attendance was the gold standard for MLB teams.
*He may have said it, or repeated it, or been the first to have written it down.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||True but...||
they're using Michigan Athletic Department numbers...tickets sold versus actual attendees. Corporate ticket grabs may mean more money, but ultimately fewer seats filled. Using your example, look in the background of ANY baseball game, up to and including the wildcard playoff games, and you'll see row upon row of empty seats. As many have mentioned, it's kind of a hassle to do all the ancillary things to get there, unless you're committed to the whole dealio. And this goes for MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA and CFB. Parking costs money. Dining out prior (or tailgating) costs money. Even drive time has its costs...especially upon departure postgame. These aren't 2-3 hour slices of time, unless TV/DVR is there for you...it's 5-6 hours, all the way up to 10 hours (for the hardcore tailgater). (Forget if you're the host of your tailgate...packing starts the night before or in the wee hours at o'dark thirty.)

|4 years 15 weeks ago||Goalies||
Since the aughts, we've often seen the NC team have either an (eventual) NHL starter or back-up goalie in net during the drive to that trophy (witness MSU with Miller in net). Michigan has had several of those goalies, but only Turco was a long-term NHL starter. Montoya and Shields did their parts in the majors, but Hogan was more indicative of typical M backstops. Baby Jesus was awesome, but time will tell his place in the bigs.
|4 years 15 weeks ago||Butterfield||
Ya crack me up...Mateen Cleaves...just 4 posts above the "Shady Recruiting Practices" thread, subtly inserts comment about the improper "benefit" received courtesy of Mo Taylor.
|4 years 16 weeks ago||"Marketplace"||
What you and ATL relate screams "local chamber of commerce/bowl committee provide scads of free tickets to local sponsors/businesses/NFL season ticket holders at low/no cost."
My impression of scalpers is they won't eat the buy-in cost of the tickets they have in hand, if someone is offering a reasonable amount of green for them. Reading the varied commentary, including Mr. Beeks, I gather quite a few people were happy to not sell...my experience upon viewing StubHub a couple hours prior to kick-off (from Clarkston, for giggles) showed stacks of tickets (some sellers had 14 or 20 seats available) meaning either a broker bought them, or they were freebies that current ticket holders were trying to off-load at a tidy profit to themselves. These were all priced over $100/ticket...obviously the prices dropped in the last couple hours run-up to kick-off.
Maybe the bowl dynamic is different than the home ticket market dynamic...my sense is this is a fairly true statement, regardless of venue (except maybe OSU, as they have FAR more demand than seats available).
|4 years 16 weeks ago||NSFMF||
Just positing a theory...would Darius have shown the same learning/growth curve by staying? My sense is it's hard to say/confirm with any semblance of certainty. We know M definitely could have used his talent, fo sho. Sometimes, the player needs to buy into his coaches direction, rather than his own teenage knuckleheadedness (see BWC for a prime example)...and Jake Long for the other end of the spectrum. Different strokes for different (or diff'rent) folks!

Tenets, not tennants. Though the mental imagery, to be honest, amuses...
|4 years 18 weeks ago||Options||
Where I think this lockout differs from the last one is that the players, or at least, the better/best players, have options, and they executed...in droves. According the ESPN list of players now playing elsewhere, it's over 160...forgot, maybe even over 170 players. That works out to a smidge under 25% of the leagues players are overseas. (Another way to look at it...the top line of every team, and goalie, is now playing elsewhere.)
Of course, the guys playing over there, mostly, aren't playing for the love of the sport, but for a paycheck...and probably not pennies/pfennigs/rubles/euros...but thousands or hundreds of thousands of them. And those leagues are wise to the gambit, and have outlawed short-term contracts now, too.
This farce is directly the result of NHL leadership/ownership incompetence...the owners, the board of governors, Bettman, et al. What should be interesting is to see if hockey comes back this year or next, will the talent come back or not...and the resultant impact on attendance/ticket prices, etc.

I remember Brian referencing that mayhaps DB consider running for guv of MI down the road, complete with a twitter #db4migov or something like that.
My reading of mgo and it's politics policy seems to indicate only oblique political references would be acceptable. A silly pic of BAIN chuckleheads fills the bill nicely. (I tried googling other imbecilic pics of VE's or PE backers, but couldn't find any...)
|4 years 18 weeks ago||Bain||
Did anyone actually click on the link above the BAIN pic, and see that BuzzFeed Sports writer Ben Mathis-Lilley actually did the comparison of college football and Wall Street?
Maybe Brian should have stated "draw your own conclusion" rather than state it's "creepily accurate," but he didn't. And I personally don't think this crossed some sort of brightline of politics/no politics rule. But it sure seems to have ruffled the feathers of more than one plutocrat-wannabe...
EDIT: And the pic is kinda funny/dumb in that these guys have money coming out of their mouths, lapels, ears (possibly other orifices as well...can't see)...much like the B1G.

says awareness, but unaware of how to draw the younguns to the stadium earlier (or at all). Of course, desirable games are a much better draw than jetpack man, coast guard chopper fly-bys or other minor-league efforts to reach out to the paying fan/true fan.
|4 years 19 weeks ago||Sold Out vs. Filled Seats||
We've crossed the line some time ago on the "sold out" compared to actual butts in seats, and are rapidly approaching (for lack of a better example) JLA style crowds...where the announced crowd is significantly greater than actual attendance (witness most of the home basketball games as yet this season).
In my professional life, tickets are proffered for a variety of sporting events. This past football season, 4 tickets were offered in Section 1 (not THAT Section 1) for the Illinois game in the rain, and in the end zone for the Iowa game. Empty corporate owned seats, along with empty corporate owned parking spots, will make more frequent appearances, for all but the most desirable of games. This is not a blip, and won't stop, as long as the scheduling is weak for both football and mens basketball.
What would be interesting is to be the proverbial fly on the wall around the end January 2013, if the request for revised seating/PSD's into the end zone seats overwhelms the actual number of seats available...do the end zone seat areas then expand into the current blue zones? What if those carrying 4 seats in Maize, Blue, Valiant or Victors sections reduce to 2 or 3 seats instead?

StubHub will be the primary beneficiary. Look at Mens Basketball. There are TONS of empty seats, and no tickets available via the Athletic Ticket Office. The grand experiment from the Michigan blogs on the comparative purchase costs for 2012 football tickets showed that supply will truly start to outstrip demand (with Premium Game exceptions applicable here and there).
Slippery slope zone has been entered...and we seem to be hitting the steeper portion...
|4 years 20 weeks ago||Thano's||

|4 years 20 weeks ago||Been That Way for Years||
Look at football...announced sellouts (and the streak), and just recently, DB started to let the cat out of the bag a bit by sharing that the number of students in attendance vs. sold tickets differed upwards of 6000 seats. Slippery slope, that. To my eye (26 years of attendance, between undergrad years and now in post-collegiate life), I can tell by looking across the field if there seems to be more shoulder room there, more hip room in my row, to ascertain that we certainly are packed in cheek-to-cheek...or not.
The ticket package dealio has done it's work...made people shell out far more dollars than normal...another round of PSL + ticket cost vs. StubHub should be run for MBB. I'd imagine the results would be similar to the 2012 home football slate, whether full season, partial or just premium games were somehow compared.
|4 years 20 weeks ago||Another "View"||
The AD placed the majority of the Maize Rage section in direct camera angles, and the roving cam(s) generally take shots conducive to leaving the impression Crisler is packed. |4 years 25 weeks ago||Actually||
Thanks, Yeo...what I was referencing was that DG wasn't really performing as a WR, put Darboh in, let DG's nicks heal, and keep him available for either WR or QB.
And I'd argue DG's stat line for past few games indicates he's not really going to make us stop wishing Stonum had better managed his DUI issues.
|4 years 25 weeks ago||Hoke Mentioned DG's Boo-boos||
But then, if DG is truly gimpy (a little bit of shoulder and a smattering of ankle, according to the presser today), why is he out there at wide? As a 6'4" decoy?
And where is Darboh? Frittering away his Fr year eligibility on ST? He could be an equally soft-route running, turning-his-head-and-body-the-wrong-way WR, while DG recuperates. DG hasn't put up anything so incredible as WR that he was required to be out there. If anything, The Funchise has out DG'ed DG as the big loping-yet-fast guy. Let DG do some signal calling and, if required, mop-up or urgent back-up duty at QB. Only.

during one of many snowflakes or hotseat threads, that 1984 team was the last to be shutout, 26-0 to Hayden Fry's Hawkeyes. Poster actually mentioned Russ Rein (I'd forgotten him...easy to do...and you mention the guy I remembered, Zurbrugg).
After that Iowa game, the Hawkeye players indicated they'd not seen such a simplistic offensive gameplan since their high school days, so there was a bit of that possibly dialing back too far, too.
(**I think Harbaugh broke his collarbone, actually.)
|4 years 25 weeks ago||Good point||
My brother and I have discussed AC and Desmond in the same respect...not having NFL-esque bodies. But they CAN be used in college ball to great effect...not saying Gallon has similar speed/acceleration, but 5'10" and 185 for Desmond isn't a yawning gap to Gallon at 5'8" and 180.

That recruiting chart showing the "Iowa-ness" of MSU recruiting really nailed the subj matter. Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska and MSU all cluster in that not-great-recruits-but-could-do-good-things region, which has sadly bitten U-M in the butt (too many seasons since the mid-90's) more often than most of us care to remember...
|4 years 26 weeks ago||Replies||
To Hammer: Not too many other occurrences of field rushes since the turn of the millenium, that I'm aware of, if any others.
To MGS: Same with Purdue '82, except we were successful in taking down one of the uprights (maybe both?), which wouldn't come down until someone leapt onto the thing, causing it to come down FAST...luckily no one was in the landing path. And that accordion/domino effect of people falling over, immobilizing those in the general area can be disconcerting (though with enough lingering effects of your favorite beverage, you're willing to ride it out).
|4 years 26 weeks ago||Thank You!!||
|4 years 26 weeks ago||NSFMF||
I know who Bellomy is...curious to see if he gets meaningful snaps and experience this year, and what kinds of plays are called while he's in (see numerous posts/threads on the topic blasting/loathing/adoring his "stats" to date). College football is rife with results where teams rise high riding the upperclassman QB, who plays 90%+ snaps, and then the drop-off-a-sheer-cliff outcome after said senior QB graduates/uses up eligibility. Have a succession plan in place, and as we've coachspoke...the expectation is to the position, not the player.
Another comment, not particularly in response to your post, the "wait 'til Al gets his QB - Shane Morris." So what? Seems quite a few comments out there about the kid should red-shirt in 2013. Then what? Wait another year, until Morris is a R-So or R-Jr until the offense really takes off? That means 2015 is when we can expect to take on anyone, anywhere, and win. WOOF!
As very many others farther down this thread are commenting, fans are/can be stupid. What aggravates is to make a commitment* to change, and bail after 2-3 years of really awful and ugly infighting/backbiting. And unhappy results abound, on-field and off. (*not really a commitment)
But thanks for the reply...always interested in what others think/say. Not alway easy to summarize succinctly.
|4 years 26 weeks ago||I see||
what you did there!
And here we were thinking it had everything to do with schematic advantage!
|4 years 26 weeks ago||Direct Function||
It can be argued that the budget for said staff can ALSO have a huge influence on exactly who the staff will be. Watching some of the Borge-iosity, it's pretty unfortunate that a talent of the level of Denard is being utilized far below his particular skillset. (My brother, a fan, but not frequent enough visitor to games, marveled at forcing DR into a WCO QB role, when he's clearly ill-suited for it. How I wish the "we won't force players into schemes they're not suited for" was an actual truth instead of another bit of coachspeak...)
If an AD suggests here are two wheelbarrows of money, go hire THE BEST staff, does Borges get invited? It's understood there are loyalties to staff, etc. But with the money to pull in ANYONE you want, regardless of cost, makes it a VERY different proposition.
I've commented elsewhere, the stinginess of the Michigan AD regarding football coaching staff has been an albatross keeping those teams from mid-90's to 2007 from being Alabama-esque in terms of being elite and staying there.* (*Elite does NOT lose games in September, or to Minnesota, or get blown out by Iowa during homecoming.)
|4 years 26 weeks ago||More like||
How old ARE you? Best AD in decades? (Canham, Schembechler, Weidenbech, Goss and Martin...including DB, that's 6 AD's. He may be better than 2 of them. Maybe.)

Point being, whenever a stunner of an upset of very large proportions occurs, The Horror® invariably is referenced, thus achieving DB's "Future."
Which he creates, on a near-daily basis...
(Almost as bad as Kordell Stewart and the Victory Jets "Pontiac - Game Changing Performance" contest clip replayed over, and over, and OVER again! Until a few years ago, anyways.)
|4 years 32 weeks ago||Actually||
There were two incidents...the one referenced, and one shortly thereafter. We were pretty sure it was Carl on the first, and the second, not so sure it was him or someone else.

2nd row, southwest corner, on side of the 'N' in that endzone (close to the flagpole).
As stated, TD celebrations will be closeby.

Anonymous Internet Guy, I won't neg you.
Without internet access over the w/e, the mental post was brilliant. Days late, but brilliant.
I too, refrained from bombing away at any players.
Coaches, an athletic director and Brent/Herbie, OTOH, were fair game for my witty lampoons. Sadly, too much said on too many threads for me to be relevant a couple days after the game.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||Quote?||
Not nearly an exact quote.
Since we're making inferences, why not take this opportunity to infer that what RR meant was that we're too young and inexperienced, and "even Vince Lombardi couldn't fix this defense."
But go ahead and keep mauling the actual quote to fit YOUR narrative.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||It IS!||
Ya know, not only is it fun, it's, IMHE, a distinctly Michigan response.
Parse, debate, repeat.

I guess there are many ways to blame the players, and this is "the right way."
There also seems to be the right way to force your scheme onto the players you inherit...

Season opener of my freshman year. Read up on Wiki, since I'd forgotten bits and pieces...remembered the second game of the season against UCLA and losing. Beating Purdue later in the season to earn our Rose Bowl berth a week before losing to OSU (as they were also called then). Running down to the brick wall after the Purdue game so we could charge the field and tear down the goalposts.
That was one of the seasons where there were unbalanced Big schedules, so U-M finished 7-1 in conf, OSU 6-1, so we had the better winning percentage. Howls from Columbus. Oh well.
Then went out to the Rose Bowl and got thrashed by UCLA

Hey, Roger. I can call you Rog, right?
Actually, I've emailed Brian directly in the long ago (~2 years) regarding the lolmsm (and their declining circulation, and fairly putrid number of hits on their websites), and we exchanged a couple emails directly on the subject. With an appropriately descriptive subject line, you could have gone straight to the top via email. I, for one, understand why you went the other route, and understand how you thought your actions there should have been sufficient to get the awareness raised at another level.
Issue closed for most of the board, I'm sure. Let's hope for a pleasant update regarding MGoArmy, Tae and the Hope for Pahokee org.

Can't tell you mgobrethren how many times I read that on other forums/blogs. And almost everytime, go back and read it again, to make sure I'm not missing some sort of hippie youth acronym, while mentally imagining the typist/poster pronouncing it "WAY-LAY."

I still don't know how that made the game experience better or added more "WOW" to the event. The games are fine with a modest amount of pageantry and sparkle. Paratrooping/jetpacking the gameball in is fine, but not something anyone I know will point to as so memorable they remember which particular game it happened (10 years from now for jetpack man).
Not disagreeing with you, just a good place to suggest that some of the goofy minor professional league antics, in order to create noise or "buzz," may be ill-applied to Michigan football.

Whether he retires at 64, 66 or 69, what happened last time he left? Michigan Football has now placed itself, salary-wise, among the top 10 (?) in OC/DC renumeration. Will we ever see again the promote-from-within philosophy that kinda sorta worked/didn't work after 1998? Worked insanely well from Bo's first days (possibly before) through to the 1997 NC, due to having coaching rosters STACKED. But looking back in the aughts, the loyal coach philosophy assisted the anvil in dragging down performances whereby better coaches/coordinators could have exploited the talent advantage Michigan held for so long.
My guess is some of the staffers will stay after Borges and Mattison depart, but OC/DC will become outside hires. A guess, I know...

Yeah, that Auburn AD is the way forward. I thought there was another place (Arkansas?) where someone with Jerry Jones money pulled all the strings on hirings/firings...
Maybe NoDak hockey? Nice extreme example of the money tail wagging the AD dog...

For many reasons, good and bad.
Yeah, Elvis telgraphing that lazy toss for Buckley to waltz into the endzone hurts to this day.
Hated my Sec. 9 Row 10 seats, so we made our way to the student section, ~30 yard line. Packed (PACKED) in like sardines...everyone standing on the benches. Sideways. Had to dip a shoulder and turn to watch as the LOS moved from one side to the other. With the up-tempo pace, it was like a tennis match, back and forth, up and down the field.
Using a Howard Cosell voiceover would work to describe the overall game...two heavyweights: one the old guard, the other, the challenger, a young up-and-comer. With shot after shot exchanged, the youngster survives, outlasts his opponent, and walks off the field...bruised, bloodied, but victorious.

Ah, geez. Looking at the Wikipage, I KNEW I wanted to type "Sun Runner" (as I recall, the profile of the car at M Stadium was Sun Runner or Maize & Blue).
Thanks for latching onto the fumble. (Per yesterday's MGopost on fumblitis, were you coached to do that?)
|4 years 40 weeks ago||Actually||
I seem to recall one of the Aussie competitors from 20+ years ago (Continuum, maybe?) driving around the turf (see? 20 years ago!) and doing a loop around the stadium (or at least on the field) during pre-game? (Bronco648 or any old-timer, what can you find/recall?)
Dunno if that would meet Hunter's vision of "WOW" for M Athletics. You can always go to the basement of Cobo during NAIAS and talk, look, take pics, etc.
|4 years 40 weeks ago||Same Hypothesis||
Which is good for a debate, but be prepared to have it panned. Much easier to blame RR than to evaluate any underlying cause which may/may not have been his fault.
Ultimately, what Michigan Football fans learned in the aughts was to have a mix of players getting meaningful reps, so when called upon, they would have some basis of understanding and ability to make plays (hopefully).

Spent many a Saturday post-game meal at Thano's Lamplighter, typically including a brief conversation with Carl about the game just ended. He had his table for 8+ up front, we had our booth in back by the TV, a cold pitcher of Molson waiting for us...
