|3 weeks 4 days ago||It's Hoke.||
It' probably in the 2, 3 part interview that Borges did with Heiko but I know I have read that it's Hoke who makes the call. IIRC, there's also something in there about the situations when Hoke puts on a headset.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||I'm not an engineer,||
but I certainly remember during space shuttle launches the "announcer" would say that the engines were at 103% (I may not be remembering the exact number, but I'm positive it was greater than 100%.) How could this be? The actual engines exceeded the design requirement.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||OK, so Brian wants Borges to do something different.||
In part because (paraphrasing) Borges is asking the Offense to do hard things. What would these non-hard things be. Do they even exist? An example of why I question this: Magnus in his UM-Nebaska recap points out that the final straw for him was when Schofield, a senior, couldn't properly execute a slide protection, which is evidently a high school-level protection.
Why is this relevant to me? Look. I'm not saying that Magnus & Space Coyote are right. They claim to be coaches, but nobody knows who you are on the internet, so maybe they aren't. But Brian isn't a coach, either. And looking at the FAQ for his bio, I don't see where he played organized football. So he appears to be self-taught. So yeah, he can do N years of UFRs and say X didn't work. But maybe there are some holes in what he's taught himself. So maybe his analysis - and conclusions - need to be taken with a grain of salt.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Somebody else posted that excerpt recently.||
Bo's take away was all the new-fangeled stuff didn't work if you couldn't block & tackle - the fundamentals of football. So Bo stuck with what he was doing - good ol' blocking & tackling. "3 yards and a cloud of dust." Which is not a popular position on this board.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||so you've moved from||
Fire Hoke/Fire Borges to Fire Brandon?
|4 weeks 2 days ago||He also had the luxury of having an ex-DC||
On staff (as a QC guy).
|4 weeks 5 days ago||You might want to watch all of the game.||
And double check their record this year.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||So many people dwelling on the past...||
Hoke/Borges/Funk are not to blame for "We haven't won a Big 10 championship in a decade; MSU dominating 5 of 7; only beat OSU once when they were in a state of flux.'
It's fair to criticize them for 2011-now. But in that time they've gone 25-10. 3 winning seasons. 1-2 against MSU, 1-1 currently against OSU. 0-3 Big 10 championships.
I don't have the expertise to judge how good the coaching/play calling has been. Although it wouldn't seem that a .714 winning percentage warrants Fire [coach X]!.
As to the youth on the team, and is that a contributor to this season's record? Let's look at it another way. Recapping: only 25 upperclassmen on scholarship. Ideally shouldn't that be closer to 40-42? So isn't this comparable to losing 7, 8 scholarships for each of 2 years? Wouldn't one expect a team so sanctioned to see their record suffer? After all, the Penn State sanctions (no more than 15 scholarships per year, 2012-2015) were expected to have a crippling effect on the team, and for longer than 4 years.
|5 weeks 2 days ago||Oh, I don't know about that.||
what I keep reading in various places is that (1) you want Oline to redshirt and (2) you don't want them to play before their 3rd year in a system.
So that sets a floor of 2.5 under your weighting scheme. (I could quibble and contend that fr year = 0.5 (don't have benefit of spring practice) & RS = 1, but that probably just shifts numbers a little and doesn't change gap.). And even though the average is continuous, age/experience is a step function (ie RS So is 2.5, JR is 3). So 0.5 is meaningful (this is also why I'd contend that .5 for Fr year and 1 for RS works better.)
Only 7 teams in your data set have a score of <3.0. I note that Aubrun was pathetic last year, so can understand some of why they went with youth this year. LSU is having an off year for them; oh, their oline is young! The one team that I find especially interesting is Wisconsin. Their average is 2.9. As has been said before, they seem to do more with less than other Big 10 teams. However, this may have something to do with the stability at the program. Isn't it about 20 years with Alvaraez as either coach or AD? They've had the same identity, same scheme despite some coaching changes. Unlike some other programs.
I think the next step would be to add a recruiting rankings component to the scoring. As several people have pointed out, UM has had to rely on walk-ons to a much greater extent than usual for them.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||How about comparing UM's Oline against the Olines||
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Per Grantland,||
Harbaugh's salary with SF is $5M per year.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Lloyd Carr won a national championship, too.||
But that isn't enough for board members to quit their bitching about his "mediocre' 3, 4 loss seasons.
So what changed Saban from a mediocre coach just like Carr at LSU to a winner! at Alabama? The water? Or is it that board members are cherry picking data points to create some imaginary coach who'll be be savior of Michigan when Brandon sees sense and fires that dufus Hoke.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||What he did at LSU:||
8-4; 10-3; 8-5; 13-1; 9-3.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Slight difference -||
he said that about full-time professionals who were getting paid. Hoke's team is part-time student athletes.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Proof, please.||
"He has a short resume and there were no coaching changes as the result of bad performance." Proof, please, as someone in another thread is under the impression that Hoke did make some changes with his staff while at Ball State. If you're going to start your own thread, let's see some evidence to support your claim.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Why does 8-4 = fire?||
8-4 is still better than RR's BEST year. And it would be Hoke's worst year, as compared to RR's worst year of 3-9. And Hoke's projected worst year is with 1 SR, 2 JR, 3 Soph, and 10 Freshman on the Oline. Ouch! (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/lets-look-michigans-ol-recruiting-09-11-and-...). Most of his losses this year are to Oline's that have almost a full year's age advantage on Michigan: an additional year of S&C, an additional year of coaching technique and theory, and extra year of practice. Oh, and UM's defense has a simlar lack of upperclassmen. The team should have reached bottom, experience-wise this year, and should only get better starting next year.
RR was 0-3 against MSU and Ohio State.
Hoke is 1-2 against MSU and currently 1-1 (1-2 assuming 8-4) against Ohio State.
Hoke's team is bowl eligible his 3 years, RR was only bowl eligible once.
Hoke is 1-1 in bowls, RR was 0-1.
Hoke is recruiting much better, and he's recruiting a complete team.
Oh, and for those that think Les Miles is Michigan's savior; be careful what you wish for. He drives LSU fans crazy with his periodic brain farts when it comes to clock management, and there's always one or two big 'what was he thinking' coaching moments during a season. Since the board seems to find this a firable offence in Hoke, I don't know why you'd want to hire another coach who has this same fatal flaw....
|5 weeks 5 days ago||What a sorry piece of work you are.||
This was a physical game. Did you bother to notice what Michigan's jerseys looked like at the end of the game? How many times was Gardner sacked - 9 I think. How much additional contact did MSU make with him.
And yet you, from your couch or your seat in the stands says <b>Gardner is utterly worthless as a quarterback, period. He even wimped out and went down instead of taking a hit for a first down late in the 4th quarter. Then he comes up with what appeared to be a wimp-out invisible contact injury after throwing that last interception. He just didn't want to play any more! What a gutless wonder!</b>
How about you try taking those hits. Then let's see who the "gutless wonder" is.
|8 weeks 3 days ago||"This is nothing like what Rodriguez did||
on offense because there was no offense in which Stephen Threet, Nick Sheridan, seven scholarship OL, and a parade of freshmen at wide receiver would be effective."
That is correct.
RR's record in his 3 years at UM was 15-22.
In less than 2.5 years, BH's/AB's record is 24-8. If UM loses the rest of it's games this that will be 24-14.
But go on saying that Hoke/Borges is worse than RR. Coaches aren't the only ones with lizard brains.
|8 weeks 3 days ago||Honestly.||
Did you read what you wrote? "The responsibility for the raw talent, size, strenght and development of the players we have on the interior O-line falls entirely on this staff."
- Toussaint, Gallon, Lewan & Schofield are seniors. This is their 3rd year under Hoke.
- Funchess, Norfleet, Bryant, Miller & Glasgow are sophomores. This is their 2nd year under Hoke. 2nd year working with Wellman on strength.
Seth had a diary on When the Oline will be ready: http://mgoblog.com/content/hokepoints-when-will-o-line-be-ready. His answer? 3rd/4th year. Only 7 players in the last 20 years were ready in their 2nd year.
Maybe, just maybe a big piece of what we're seeing is the growing pains of an offense that by necessity (there are only 25 upper classmen on the depth chart) is a year or 2 younger than optimal. Hence inconsistency, mistakes, lesser strength, etc.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Let's not go there.||
'because the young kids feel they don't have to prepare the same as for Ohio State." Let's not go there.
Instead, let's look at the depth chart by class (found under useful stuff) and re-read Seth's diary on when the O-line will be ready. http://mgoblog.com/content/hokepoints-when-will-o-line-be-ready
Let's also remember: These kids have spring & fall ball and 20 countable hours during the season of coaching. They aren't working 40+ hours a week like the pros. Oh, and they also have stuff like school in there.

and runs past Cinncinnati, the Paddlewheel trophy would seem to be a reminder of the river boat traffic that was an important part of both cities history.
|15 weeks 6 days ago||that's just one example.||
As has been shared on the boad numerous times since Hoke was hired, there are numerous examples of Ohio State using the "Ohio" terminology.
1st & foremost is script Ohio, not script Ohio State. The scoreboatds that read Ohio, not Ohio State, etc.
|26 weeks 1 day ago||Alabama's near the top of his list in part due to||
engineering? Really? Auburn is the the engineering school in AL.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||Faulty analysis.||
How on earth can one compare the ranking of Saban's recruiting classes to Shula's? Mike Shula was stuck being Alabama's coach when they had just been hit with with the loss of 21 scholarships over 3 years. Class size is an important component of class ranking. And that's not even considering oversigning...

Al Borges, who does not utilize Denard to his full potential, called a game wherein Michigan scored as many points against the #2 team in the country as the Rich Rodriguez-led team , who utilized Denard better, scored against the #15/#17 team in the country (2011 Gator Bowl).
