His playbook says the refs.  Don't ask how I know.

1. Ocracoke island.  my family used to head out there once a summer when I was kid.  It's just one of those warm hugs of a place.  Sunny beaches, good sandbar for surfing, amazing food.  Windows open for an ocean breeze at night while you play cards with friends.  You can only get to it via ferry so it's far less crowded than most of the outer banks. When I have tough day at the office I look up real estate listing there and dream of retirement.

2.  Eastern Caroline style pulled pork, cole slaw, all on a steamed bun, the cheaper the better.  A glass of Blanton's with some cracked ice and a Yuengling keeping it company.

I'm a week out from taking the family on a trip to the outer banks and I've got to say this thread is making the fact that I'm working all weekend to pull this off way easier.

Yeah, I told myself it might…

Yeah, I told myself it might be better to skip this one, and I really wish I had skipped this one.  I can't stress enough that holding them to 500ish yards and between 25 and 35 points being considered a win is insane, and yet also somehow accurate.

I didn't see playcalling as…

I didn't see playcalling as an issue in this game.  We pulled out some good play calls on 3rd down and our goal line offense was better than in previous games.

Also that 4th quarter featured two key injuries to the interior line.  Yet our run game was still productive to outright good.  That's progress in my book.

I feel like this is a guy who does not think Michigan is going 8 and 4 this year.

Damn, and here I thought the real MVP was the friends we made along the way.

Brian,

I wanted to add to…

Brian,

I wanted to add to the chorus.  This past year has been incredibly difficult for any number of reasons.  The exact reason why will vary from person to person.  I found myself in the weird position of having a job, but being unable to really do it.  I was keeping things moving along, but you could see the wheels starting to come off the track.  I got to a better place.  Not the same place before this whole mess, but one where the walls weren't closing in. I truly hope you can find a similar spot.

If it helps in your journey; this matters.  This blog is a place I've come to for years to feel better when I need a laugh.  Sports are weird, and I think my kid finds it odd in the extreme that when a ball goes through a hoop or doesn't it effects my mood somehow.  Maybe it shouldn't, but it does.  Your blog glorifying and amplifying the things that makes sports special matters to people.  You do a worthwhile thing and your effort enriches the lives of so many people you'll never meet.

So thank you and feel better.

Anytime I make it back to Ann Arbor I find myself at Ashley's.  So many great memories.  Eric, Scott, Tony, when this is all over Ashley's?

Allow me to summarize for…

Allow me to summarize for the squeamish:  It's not completely crazy to expect this position group to be ok maybe, but also it could still be a disaster.  Since we know know effective hoping for a positional renaissance has been in the past, warm bodies that holdup mostly against a double would be a significant victory.

You have been warned.

Man that Hutchinson…

Man that Hutchinson comparison must be tight.  From the Article:

Since it's only on every 4 years, I have started taking time off of work to watch curling.  The worst part is I have no idea why I like it so much.  I mean, I have stood and cheered during curling matches.  I think part of that could be the fact that my SO and I spend the weeks prior to curling making our own flavored vodkas, but who can say really.

"drain most of the fat after…

"drain most of the fat after you're done"

And this exactly where we see heresy against doctrine in it's most obvious form.  Fat is both flavorful and texture...ful.  Perhaps instead of draining away the fat:

- add a tablespoon or 2 of flour at the end of the browning process, and stir as if the fate of the universe depended upon it.

- Let cook until the flour has absorbed most of the fat, coated the meat, and turned a pleasantly brown color.

Continue with the cooking process as described above.  Your chili will be slightly thicker, but a bit of your favorite cooking liquid additive can balance this out.  I take no position on the previously raised bean issue.

Bone picking time.  So far…

Bone picking time.  So far the Defense has graded out overall around a 3.5 on the Mgoblog scale.  Last years a solid 4.5ish.  Last years defense until a particular game was one of the tops in the nation and featured a number of current NFL players in both the secondary and along the line.

The defensive podcast preview this year included prediction of a top 15ish type of defense.  Where is the disconnect?  It seems like this years preview especially in the secondary and the line denotes a large step back. Top 15 defenses, which I get are not top 5 defenses, don't just materialize out of pretty good.  What am I missing here?

*looks at top of recruiting profile* OK, this kids a tackle prospect.  *Watches video of a tight end as he repeatedly high points balls and generally looks pretty smooth getting down the field*  Huh, so we're really going a different direction with the whole offensive line thing.

Damn I miss Ashley's.

Still go.  It's worth it even

Still go.  It's worth it even with a wait.  Plan to get there at opening, and just be laid back about the fact that there's going to be a bit of a wait.  Call ahead and book the fiery furnace hike. Stop at the Moab brewery after you're done.

I love Arches in Moab, but

I love Arches in Moab, but it's gotten extremely crowded over the past 4 or 5 years.  There's frequently a lne 20 to 40 minutes long just to get into the park and now there's talk about limiting access.  So yes whilst it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth it's being runed because now people know it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Touch fouls need to never be

Touch fouls need to never be a thing ever again! Also I woke up my two year old. So I've got that going for me which is nice

How dare you even suggest.

How dare you even suggest.

Saw it law night

Took me a while to figure out where I'd rank this one.  First off, just to get it out of the way, it's really damn good.  The opening crawl had me worried that we were just getting an Empire remake, but it seems the director made some conscious decisions to subvert that right from the start.  There was a shocking amount of character development for most of the main trio.  For the somewhat darker tone of this film it had a suprising amount of actually funny moments.  Benicio Del Toro's performance was amazing.  Visually, it was the most impressive Star Wars movie. There were about 3 moments in the movie that I won't spoil but they are the prettiest damn scenes scenes Star Wars has ever given us.

It's also not perfect.  Damn is it long, and it drags in the middle to the detriment of the plot.  It loses a lot of the tension it so carefully built in the 1st act by having the second act take at least 20 mintues too long to get from point A to B.  This is probably a personal taste thing, but I watch Star Wars not for the sparkling dialogue so much as to see people kicking ass with lightsabers and the dialogue to lightsaber ass kickery ratio was way off. As good as Benicio Del Toro was Laura Dern was just sort of there.  She wasn't bad, but she was certainly not the highlight of this film.  and there's a thing that annoyed me plot wise, but it's way spoilery so I'll refrain.

Overall, this was the best Star Wars movie since the OG trilogy came out.  I'm looking forward to going back and seeing it again.

This SIR, is the internet

For instance did you know that I'm a skilled neurosurgeon and also have a PHD in Electrical Engineering!  Ok not really, but I am a lawyer, or am I!  I actually am a lawyer though... but maybe I'm not!  No, seriously though I'm a law talking guy.

He only has

He only has 850 rushing yards this season.  I mean that's... sort of alot considering that Evans has over 550.  yeah ok I'm convinced.  WHER STAR!

Blocking

At 5:48 in the highlight video you can see Onwenu execute the rarely used Force push technique on 17.  More coaches need to teach these kind of fundemental basics of blocking.

Assignments

Bush -> running back

Mettelus -> tight end

Hudson ->QB

Gary -> take on yet another double to free up everyone else

Michigan thinks a screen is going to either a tight end leaking out or the crossing running back.  Running back is ended by Bush so lets give him a check mark on his assignment and maybe a smiley face next to that.  Tight end never leaks out. Mettulus might have stuck with him for half a tick too long, but otherwise covers his assignment.  Gary moves two blockers back collapsing the pocket so let's igve him a check mark.  Hudson flows poorly here getting caught up in Gary's double initially leaving no player on the edge to force the ball back inside.  He is fast though and fasts his way over to eh QB a couple yards beyond the LOS.  Check minus.

I'm not sure it excuses his actions

But I'm also of the mind that at some point actual structural damage to someones brain might relieve them of culpability for their actions.

I mean say one day you have a whole and healthy brain and you act one way and the next day portions of that brain are simply dead and now you're acting differently and so much so that it's to your detriment.  I think it would be a pretty dick move for someone who was aware of your disability to hold you as responsible for the actions you took on day two as they would have on day one.

Serious Talk

I love these posts.  I look forward to the MGoBBQ posts.  BBQ in all it's many forms is a passion of mine.  HOWEVA, Could we please post these damn things closer to the end of the day.  I'm on Mountain time and haven't had lunch yet.  I am dying over here.  Help me out just a little bit!

The corners will be. I mean

The corners will be. I mean you can't lose two NFL draft picks and replace them with underclassmen and expect that to go smooth, but I'm not certain safety isn't going to be about on par with last year plus there's now a Glasgow there which is comforting.

Ahhh

Now that's some reassuring content right there.  Also, dang man, I recall Chase Winovich coming in for mentions here and there, but he didn't seem like Bosa levels of productive. This pleases me.  I am pleased.

Ugh

So I come home after a long day and think ahhh, finally I've got some time to read the O-line preview. Surely this year will be good news. Let's take a look... welp, hell.

Just once I want the O-line preview to start thusly: These aren't men. No, these battle tested veterans haven't been men for some time. Gaze upon Titans.

Instead of a veritable yakkty sax compilation of missed assignments I want to see a DT wet himself presnap out of fear.

Just lie to me if you have to Brian!

Kid Friendly?

I live in the area and this sounds like a great time. I'll have an almost two year old in tow though.  Is this fine establishment kid friendly?

Ozzy

But Sabbath's first couple albums Ozzy, not solo Ozzy.

Highlights are worth a look

Competition caveats apply of course, but highlight tape is like a Khaleke Hudson level of impressive, but in lineman format.  It's a fun watch either way.

D-line preview should include this .gif

This is the returning starting D-line for this year minus one Glasgow.  I'll grant you it's a pretty big minus, but still our starting D-line should be ok guys.

A few things

1. If you'e not good with gore don't cut the umbilical cord it looks like something straight out of the Alien franchise.

2. It might be too late, but if it's not, cook a few big batches of food you like and freeze that.  Seriously, fill your freezer to capctiy with meals that all you have to do is take them out of said freezer and unthaw.  You will not feel like cooking once kiddo is back home, and you will be shocked how hungry your wife is.

3. No one is gonna talk much about this, but at 3 in the morning when you haven't slept much at all in the past 5 days and your kid is screaming and you've done everything you can.  WALK AWAY.  You're a Dad, but you're also a human being and everyone has a different tolerance level for how much they can take before they reach a point where they are overally frustrated.  It's OK.  You don't need to be superman, and more importantly you can't be superman because you're just some guy.  Put her down in the basinet, and take 2 minutes to go get yourself together.

4. Have a male parent you can talk to.  If you don't have a guy you're super tight with right now recruit one ASAP.  There will be times when you're going to want to talk to someone who is in or has recently vacated your shoes.

5. A lot of these are survival tips kind of stuff, and I don't want to make this seem like your life is over or an abandon all hope kind of deal.  Yeah there's some down side here, but the positives outweigh it all.  Your child is going to constantly amaze you.  You're going to reach a point one afternoon where you look at her and realize this little girl is the best thing that happened to you.  It might not be that first week or month, but it'll happen.  You're in for a long stange trip.  Enjoy the ride.
