|10 weeks 22 hours ago||Legalblue to the rescue!||
So I love this stuff because it deals with both my degrees. I was asked to dumb this down for someone to explain both the legal and technical aspects of what's going on. Warning many of you are gonna want to TL;DR the hell out of this.
A little bit of an over simplification is this: Imagine your phone as a little safe. It's a ridiculously sturdy safe though and there's no (reasonable) way to access the contents of the safe without the combination. What's really nice is only you the user has a combination to the lock. In this case law enforcement has the safe( I-phone), but can't get into it because they don't know the combination. There's a brute force approach to try to get into the safe where you start trying every possible combination on the lock, but that could take literally years to yield any results. The FBI went to Apple and said "hey open this safe for us." Apple says "best we can do is try to crack this sucker the slow painful brute force way." The FBI then went to the Court and said "We think they're not giving us reasonable assistance in cracking this lock because there's another way in and Apple won't build it for us." You see Apple could build an "easy button." This easy button would fit right over the lock and you just press the button and presto the safe is open. The judge says "Hey apple it's one phone one time. Go ahead and build the FBI that Easy Button they want because the data on this particular phone is very important.
Apple is not a dumb company though and knows a couple things: Once you build an easy button that button can be really easily replicated and given to other people that you DO NOT want to have the easy button. At that point there's no use in having locks in the first place. They also know that frankly the national intelligence apparatus is not the most trustworthy set of hombres on the planet. There's extraordinarily little oversite and there's no guarantee that in the future the FBI won't use the easy button on other phones regardless of court order. Also the FBI might give the easy button to the NSA or one of the other scary acronyms out there. They aren't bound by things like the 4th amendment when they are searching peoples phones in other countries. Apple now makes a less desirable product because it is known to be unsecure and the USA is known to collect any foreign data they can conceivably get their hands on.
Lastly, this is not an Apple only problem. If the FBI get's their way here it is likely to set a precedent in 9th circuit, if not the nation should the SCOTUS take it up. If the FBI wins the government as a whole will have the ability to go to other companies and say that the court found that it was reasonable assistance to build an easy button for any system you build that uses encryption (might be a few exceptions, but lets ignore that for the moment since we're getting doomsday-ey).
TLDR versin if the governemnt wins they gonna know what porn you looks at even if you use Tor.

Perhaps some type of framework that codifies what is and is not a "useless new topic." I mean, we know the rough outline of the offense and we're all very clear on the punishment, but by any legal standard this new rule should be void for vagueness.
To that end I propose a new thread where we discuss what should and should not constitute a "useless new topic." And for that matter there are clear tangential issues that should be considered. Is the use of OT in the heading merely a guide for fearless leader to nuke the crap out of the poster, or are there certain OTs that are less OT than other OTs?
So yeah, if someone could just start up the thread I mentioned above that would be much appreciated. I have an appointment I can't miss or you know I'd do it myself...

So is this guy force sensitive or what? I loved the whole movie, but this had me scratching my head all night. Is he the only guy in 7 star wars films to use a lightsaber who has no ability with the force or is there something there that just hasn't been trained at all?
Seemed like Rey knew exactly what she was doing by the end of the film as far as the force was concerned, but Finn never had one moment where it seemed like he was getting it other than holding his own against Kylo in a lightsaber fight. Thoughts?
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Me and my horse||
Are doing just fine thank you. It's the nice thing about college athletics. Everyone can afford to have a high horse. Literally none of this matters in the grand scheme of things. It's a game, and we as a group can be just as invested in it being played the right way as we can in an outcome.
As my original comment said I don't care so much that he struck this player. I care that he thought his next move should be to cover that fact up.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||It's a big damn deal||
He's accused of striking a player and asking both players and coaches to lie about it. I'm more worreid about the accusations of a cover up then I am about the initial indicent. If he'd come out and said, "I made a mistake and it was in the heat of the moment it wasn't the right thing to do and I take responsbility" he probably still has a head coaching position.
The cover up shows his character and that's what got him fired and what should keep him from being a coach at U of M.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Wow||
This is not a guy who would be a good hire for U of M. First, yeah, the dishonesty thing is a big damn deal. You yourself may "misremember" an incident, but asking other people especially those you are in a position of power over to lie to cover you is double plus ungood.
Also how is recruiting going to go? You thinks parents aren't going o be concerned that there child is going to be slapped around by the DC? Or asked to lie to cover up his misdeeds?
No thanks, I don't really care how good he is at Xs and Os, character is at least as important as football ability.

There are two locations, go to the one in downtown Denver. Go at least 30 minutes early or you will not get a seat. Take the light rail if at all possible. It's a bit of a hike from the nearest station, but public trasport in Denver is decent so you could take a very short cab/uber ride from there. Do enter the raffle, and scholarship squares. Do hit up the bloody mary bar. Do not order food if at all possible. It's not terrible it's just that after the game there's better places to grab a bite in that general location.
If you do not fear for your personal safety the OSU bar is Hayter's and CO. and isn't all that far from the Lodos.

My Mom recieved a letter from the University of Michigan my sophmore year relating to a party that was thrown at my fraternity. It indicated, amongst other things, that underage alchol consumption had occured. The only criminal matter that arose from that party was a noise ticket as far as I'm aware. There weren't any other reprecussion with the University either. The IFC had a field day with it , but it's not quite the same thing. I was not placed on probation or any sort of suspension through the University nor was anyone else in the house. It might have been threatened in that letter though I can't recall for sure. Still, I believe that my mom and I had a less than pleasant phone conversation that day.
I don't see this as some massive shift in policy of notifying parents of bad behaviour. It certainly applied more stringently to all members of the Interfraternity Council as far back as the early 2000s.

It's my drug of choice right now too. That being said it's not in anyway reasonable to expect that. Even from a team with proven leaders and capable players at every position an undefeated season is extremely unlikely. Ask Saban about that.
In 3 years when this team has proven leaders and capable players at every position we'll be talking about how an 8 win season is the absolute floor and hey maybe if things break just right and Michigan gets a lucky bounce or two they could be holding a National Championshp Trophy come January.
RIght now 8 wins seems like a darn good season.
|40 weeks 5 hours ago||Somebody has to get them the ball||
I think taking much of anything from the 2014 season as a basis for comparison is doing the WR corps a diservice. The fact of the matter is Michigan had a #1 target and he was injured and prone to drop the football. Other than that no one really had a chance to shine out thee because the ball never came to them. If we have a QB that has time in the pocket and can make reasonable decisions I think even a mediocre group of recievers can look good. If the QB is getting knocked around and is throwing into pressure even an excellent group of recievers is going to look bad.
I think the only reasonable thing we can say is that there are athletes at the WR position and their overall value to this team is going to be largely dependent on who is getting them the ball.

The most interesting point of the discussion to me is the resolution of the Fermi Paradox. I tend to think that maybe we have been visted, but it's also clear that there's no definitive evidence that's happened. If you have 6 minutes here's a fun video about the Fermi Paradox.

But it's more a difference in degree than a difference in kind. Placing young attractice females in a position to interact with a recruit isn't exactly new, but what it implies is kind of slimy. Photoshoping a recruit on the cover of a magazine and showing them Big Ten/National title while perhaps not telling the whole truth is more an aspirational type of goal. There's at least a non skeezy implication behind it. All that being said college football recruiting is not a clean business this particular recruit looked to be having an enjoyable time (because of course). I hope he has a great recruiting experience, and makes a choice that's a good fit for him, and no I'm not implying that kind of choice or that kind of fit (you all have filthy minds).

Gather close Mgoers and you shall hear my tale of wedding woe:
First things first, It was by and large a wonderful wedding. Legalwife is not a big fan of having friends who also happen to be female so she had a bridesman and two bridesmaids. All the bridesmaids lived in different states and picked up their dresses separately. No one had bothered to really look at these things until the day of the wedding. Once the dresses came out it was clear they did not match. Worse, the best way to describe the peach dress was unimaginably ugly. Bridesman was of course in a suit but it was a suit that was supposed to complement the bridesmaids. It did not. I panicked because I assume legalwife was awful upset about this. We had essentally no chance that morning to talk to one another, and I only found out through a series of quick texts from legalsister. So anyway the groomsmen and I are at the chapel waiting and waiting... and waiting. I think maybe she's not going through with this! Maybe this dress thing has just pushed her over the edge and she's in tears and or otherwise inconsolable! I send the best man for a report on what the hell is going on. He returns with the following news: "I found them. They were laughing an drinking wine and generally unaware that the wedding had started 30 minutes ago. They're on the way."
Long story short. Things will go wrong and as long as you don't care nobody else will either.

So when you're talking abut a reduction in charges of this variety there is generally still a finding that the factual basis of the charge was domestic violence. In fact in my state the prosecutor would need to make a specific record that there was no factual basis for charging DV in order to dismiss that portion of a charge. Sweetheart plea deals happen very frequently in DV cases where the victim is reluctant to testify. This reluctancy has a number of root causes ranging from "none of this happned" to "all of this happned but I have financial/emotional reasons for not cooperating with the DA." I have no idea if that's the case here, but safe money is always on a DV victim to recant. This is an enormous problem that the judicial system is terrible at addressing. I could rant about this for a number of paragraphs but ya'll don't here me though you just want to dance...
This is often looked upon as reasonable outcome for both the prosecutor and the defendant. The prosecutor is happy because conviction = acceptable. Defense is happy because lower level offense mean less jail time hanging over the defendant should the screw up probation.

My one and only care about whether or not Brandon forced this to happen is whether or not Hoke and Nussmeier will work well toghether. Regardless it was a business decision that was made for the benefit of the football program. It's tough to make those decisions especially becase coach Borges seems to be a well resprect and well liked guy. The nature of the time between hiring and firing was such a short period of time that it seems likely that Nussmeier was recruited and on board before the firing occured. If that's the case you had to think that Hoke was very aware of what was going to transpire, and at least tacitly condoned this.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||level 35 and it's all downhill||
I've played a number of different playthroughs on skyrim and found the game to be mostly a very enjoyable experience. Especially once my wife decide that skyrim was cool and wanted to start her own character. I've found it to be a mostly enjoyable experience that I can lose a couple hours to each week.
The game isn't without it's flaws though. Primarily, the games fundemental flaw comes down to character leveling. At about level 35 there are no challenging things to be done in skyrim. The highest level dungeon dwellers are put down effeciently with a few hacks with a weapon or a couple spells. Fighting dragons turns into hitting it with weapons and spells and then sucking down a couple healing potions every time the damn thing flies away because in the brief time it's on the ground it can't damage you enough to matter. Also you'll never run out of healing potions because there is essentially very little else you'll really want to spend your massive piles of gold on.
Overall the game gives you too much in the way of resources and does not have sinks that take away those resources at a pace that makes for any reasonable challenge. You get way too much gold, jewels, and loot every time you enter a dungeon area. There's then nothing of value exepct for the rare home or healing potions to buy and hell you'll find in a mid size dungeon probably a 5-7 healing potions of various strength any way. The same game decisions apply to crafting materials, and enchanting materials. You'll find so many of these items that it essentially makes leveling either of those skills a grind to see how fast you can smith 30 daggers at which point you can turn around sell those daggers and have more gold. They also took away degredation of armor and weapons which was a mechanic that constantly allowed players to improve important skills but also siphoned away at least a bit of the vast amounts of wealth you could accumulate.
I found that exploration of skyrim, it's hidden areas and quests to be the most satisfying aspect of the game because it ignores these broken mechanics and does provide some great hours of gameplay. If Bethesda makes another Elder Scrolls game I hope they take a hard look at the mechanics of levling. All that said I'll still pre order the game and probably enjoy myself immensly.

I bet we botch at least two exchanges with one of those being a turnover. I'm also guessing that we fail at blitz pickups at least twice. That being said I'm guessing our running game is nominally better to the tune of 140ish yards from running backs on the day. If there was ever a time to try to change the line though, this is the game to do it. Minnesota looks doubleplus ungood and we've had two weeks to get this straightened out.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Blame the Media||
If you take a look at violent crime statistics http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=2221 It's pretty clear that we as a society really are moving forward. The issue is that death and destruction sell ads for media. People go to CNN more when there's a mass shooting in Chicago or bombers in Boston then they do when there's a report released that says; hey just FYI things are getting better. At some point confirmation bias takes over and things look pretty bleak. Thankfully, it's entirely inaccurate to say there's more violent crime today than say 30 years ago. I'll wait till the UFR comes out, but I thought that Funchess was blocking decently when he found someone. I think the issue is that he's not finding the right guy, or in some cases a guy at all. I don't know that putting him into a slot solves that issue in any particular way. If you ask him to block on a run he'll either find a guy and handle him or not, and assuming not now your still looking at an unblocked linebacker (probably) or a nickel coming up to make a stop in run D. I guess it's mildly better than him facing a defensive end, but position switch in midseason seems kind of like a recipe to fail.

Won't are Epic Recruiting (tm) make this all a non factor at some point. I mean regardless of how the defense schemes to stop us won't are superior athletes at some point just run over the opposition. I can see it now our blockers smash everything the touch 3 yards downfield. Even on the worst play we'll just follow behind some monsterous tackle until the surge can take us no further. We'll complain that we can't run for more than 3 yards on first down, but won't that be nice!

Hart as the all time leading rusher for UM is a pretty darn favorable comparison. Our best case scenario here isn't one or the other emerging as in the Hart - Martin era it's having Green and Smith as slightly different but interchangable parts like Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams. That kind of tandem behind the moster offensive line we should have in place in another year... well let's just hoep for the best for both Green and Smith. I think each can find a place on this squad.

If you're driving up make sure to bring some ponchos (can be purchased in and around the stadium, but yeah cost will be up there) Afternoon storms are a thing in Michigan that time of year.
Things to do: you can swing by Stucci's for Ice cream for the family.
Or grab some food at Dominick's (try the sangria)
you could hang out in the diag and people watch. I wonder if the "are-you-interested-in-socialism-lady" is still there...
|2 years 40 weeks ago||it's just a provocative headline||
You clicked the link. It did its job. I don't have a lot of concern that hits like JC's will lead to ejections. It was a good football play within the rules and in the spirit of the game. He tackled just how every coach had taught him to since he was... well less massive, but he was probably never small. It was all kinds of terrible looking and I still cringe when the replay comes on, but that's sometimes part of football.

This was hilarious and even though its Peoples Court you have made my day sir. Reputation was explained to me this way when I started practicing: it takes a lifetime to build it and a second to detroy it. Once it's gone it doesn't come back. you are what your reputation says you are. Good Luck.

I was just discussing this with some coworkers/troglodites and we realized there are 2 to the 63 power number of ways to fill out a bracket that's 9 quintillion plus possibilities.
ofcourse picking at random isn't a great strategy but we could then factor in the likelyhood that any particular seed will beat another seed. Someone earlier in the thread had a good breakdown but if you look over time a 1 seed has never lost to a 16 and its exceedingly rare that a 2 seed loses to a 15 though it does happen from time to time. Over the course of a number of these type of calculations. Which I assure you are mind numbing and tedious (what is the likelyhood a 1 seed beats a 14th seed? has it in fact ever happened that a 1 seed has played a 14th seed?) you should get some distribution of all the possible bracket combinations that shakes out into a bell curve if you plot the various combinations over their calculated percentage to win.
Even then a standard deviation from the best probability to win (which I think but have no emerpical evidence to support would be a strait lowest seed advances bracket) would be an astronmical number of selections the curve is likely VERY flat with the number of data points we have in combination with the very low probability that any one bracket is a winner we could have 100 trillion (or more) brackets within in one standard deviation from our mean best chance bracket.
from a purely mathmatical point of view you have a better chance of being struck by lighting while getting eaten by a shark that is currently winning the lottery.
That being said this isn't abotu the perfect bracket so much as it is the bear problem. The bear problem is simple two hikers see a bear one put on the running shoes while the other chortles in a worried sort of way telling his compatriot; "Fool, you can't out run a bear". The running shoe donning hiker replie coldly in a callow and calculating manner that he needn't out run the bear just the other hiker.
/best of luck though

No seriously how the hell is Hoke pulling this off? I'd really like to stare this horse that has been gifted to us in the mouth for a while and see what makes it tick.
I don't recall Hoke burning up the recruiting trail in San Diego. I'm not sure I've even heard a good theory of how to attribute this success. Thoughts? Conjecture? Wild speculation? I'll take it all at this point.

Mr. Stonum needs help. Professional and serious help and if this suspension gets him that help then its a godo thing for him in the long run. If you think this is a dumb move by this kid your right but its also something that millions of Americans will deal with in there life time. Everybody does dumb stuff its what you do afterwards that counts. So now I wait to see what Mr. Stonum and Coach Hoke will be doing afterwards to correct this.

The RR haters got exactly what they wanted. If you define winning (not in the Charlie Sheen sense) as getting what you want, they won.
|5 years 1 week ago||this too shall pass||
Seriously let it go at this point RR haters and RR lovers. One of you won. One of you lost. It's gotten frankly childish on both sides of the argument. That's right, you're childish if you're still arguing that RR got shafted. Ofcourse he did! Now move on. You're childish if you're still arguing that RR was the worst thing for Michigan football ever. Ofcourse he was! But he don't coach here. The end.
To top it all off there are people complaining about Brian posting a relevant and reasonable for discussion topic on the blog he owns. If you don't like it don't read it. There's plenty of other great information on this site thats non controversial and it may even have video. His only point here was that a portion of the alumni base did not support RR at any point in his coaching career. This is well documented. All the people clamouring for evidence of this have either very short memories or recieved a traumatic brain injury recently.

Brandon: That is precisely the idea Coach. That is precisely the idea...
|5 years 4 weeks ago||good news||
I'd like to jump onto mgoblog and at some point see good news as it relates to football. Something soothing maybe even couched in terms of hopefulness and optimism for the future. Instead I'm bombarded with all these unsavory facts. And detailed analysis showing these unsavory facts to be bad news.
Let's get a little less analytical and accurate and little more unreasonably optimistic based off a things like "I got a good feeling about this" or "things ar bound to turn around"
|5 years 5 weeks ago||Shocked I say||
I jumped on to take a look at news while I slack off on friday and I have to tell you there are some really contradictory pieces of info on this site. I read Brian's post and then scrolled down to watch the Spring practice video.
I was shocked (shocked I say) to see Michigan players without their trademark leather helmets; some call them caps. I thought a return to MANBALL was propelling this program back to the stone age and while I did notice that our uniforms are slowly starting to turn black and white, well the pants anyhow but its a start, and there MAY have been some hints of sepia tone to the film that was creeping in near the end (perhaps I'm imagining that), we still fielded a teamthat was practicing hard and seemed genuinly excited about it ala RVB and Denard sniping back and forth.
It's not the end of the world that we're heading back to MANBALL just the end of a good idea and an exciting to watch offense. We'll adapt and move on or we won't and Hoke will be fired. At least I won't have to change channels during our Defensive series to avoid throwing objects through the TV.
|5 years 5 weeks ago||this was more of dripping sarcasm thing||
I know its unreasonable and potentially unhealthy for the team for a coach to say anything like this, but I get so fed up with coach speak crap that I felt the need to vent.
Message board seemed like the appropriate venty type place.
|5 years 5 weeks ago||Damn you MANBALL||
FBs? Under center (should that be hyphenated?)? Defense? these are not concepts I am familiar with. I think we need some kind of informative post: this is what MANBALL is.
Seriously though, I get the feeling that my expectations should be lowered a notch perhaps two notches. Why can't we just get a coach to come in and say: After 3 solid days of amazingly good practice during which no one so much as stubbed a toe we've determined we are going to be kind of a big deal this year. Our players picked up the offense in much the same way you'd expect a baby killer whale gets used to being wet. We've installed basically 90 percent of our offense and honestly I don't plan on worrying about the rest as I mentioned before i really think we're going to be kind of a big deal.
I'm nervous about this whole thing but we're only three days in, and will give this a shot... because its not like I have another option.
|5 years 5 weeks ago||It's fun to cheer for this team||
You can't help but cheer for these guys. They exceed expectations and there's no quit in them. I'm happy we're bringing this team back but more importantly I'm happy we're bringing people of this caliber and class back to the U of M for another great year of bball.

|5 years 34 weeks ago||And that's all for now||
Right now all that could be done has been done. The writers are getting ready to decry Michigan's failure or else tell their readers they knew this team had it in them all along. The NCAA has pondered all the evidence. Michigan has presented its case. They don't matter. None of that makes one bit of difference.
What does count and what does matter is simple and wonderful, and its why we get up every saturday in fall with that mingled feeling of anticipation, hope, and dread. What counts is a group of football players, Michigan football players. Some are asleep right now, others won't find sleep till tomorrow evening when win or lose they won't be able to go on anymore.
This is football season. This is the best time of year. This is when its ok to scream at the top of your lungs for that touchdown that came out of nowhere. This is when its ok to put your head down and sulk in the corner when the first loss comes. In short this is what makes being here for another fall wonderful.
Brian, Thanks. You really seem to get that about Michigan football. Go Blue.
