Aren't we forgetting Mone, who's pretty damned good too?

19 hours 49 min ago Well done

A perfect summarization of the definitions of values and rules.  It's not just a matter of semantics, either, and there are other examples of thoughtless failure to examine the differences:

  • Good salesmen understand the difference between "features" and "benefits".  If they don't, or think they're synonymous, they really don't understand how to sell.
  • Good marketers understand the difference between "strategy" and "tactic".  If they don't, they fiddle their money away while their customer base disappears.

5 days 20 hours ago Great point

Much as I think Cutler is way, way overrated, you have to look back at the long sewer drain of QBs the Bears have put on the field.  A good QB in Chicago is like a Lions team winning a playoff game -- once in a lifetime.

6 days 18 hours ago Not Hand

That's not Hand with the coaches.  But you are right -- great pictures.  I especially like the picture of the Shoe from behind the Ohio bench.  I don't go to 11W so I've never seen something that upclose.

6 days 20 hours ago source?

I'd love to know where you're getting the 15 year old graphic -- please share.

1 week 6 days ago thanks

Great story.

2 weeks 13 hours ago yes/no

You got me on endowment -- only Minnesota's is bigger than OSUs among that group; they're all pretty close but any three of them combined is less than Michigan's.

But in World University rankings, http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking, it's

UM 20

UW 31

ILL 33

Minn 47

OSU 53

There are, of course other rankings, but they tend to fall out the same.  The rankings aren't like star ratings.  They take into account not only the general excellence of the universities but also their breadth and depth of study.  i.e., the higher ranked tend to be the "bigger" ones, in terms of how many high-ranking departments they have.

In other words, it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

2 weeks 14 hours ago Beg to differ

In the conference alone, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota are much stronger overall universities.

2 weeks 18 hours ago Tom VH

Can someone please tell me again how tall is Tom VH?  And, while we're at it, Chantel?

It could be very useful in these situations.  I just re-read the Mike McCray piece and the variance in his height reports from 6-1 to 6-4.  Tom VH seems to consistently stand up pretty straight so he could be a great yardstick.

2 weeks 21 hours ago no problem

I really don't care.  just share.  Going forward, I will try to post updates to this thread -- if it stays up.  The thing is, every time a Michigan offer makes a commitment somewhere else, the offending school needs to be updated.  Likewise, every time Michigan gets a commit, the other offering schools need to be updated.

I don't know if the mods have ever allowed a "wiki" on a specific subject?

2 weeks 1 day ago More "national powers"

More work on the subject.  I used Touch The Banner for Michigan offers, Scout for other teams' offers and 247 composite for stars.  I feel like these five schools are rightfully "national powers".

Tennessee

We offered four of their commitments -- 5* RB Jalen Hurd, 4* OT Orlando Brown, 4* DE Joe Henderson, 3* TE Helm.  They offered Peppers, Harris, Marshall Bunting.  Net 0 players and +2 stars.

Texas

We offered their 4 * CB Jermaine Roberts and 4* LB Otaro Alaka.  They offered none of Michigan's commits.  Texas "beats" Michigan, and probably every other team every year on this type of comparison for the simple fact that they rarely offer any kid not from Texas and they flat out own Texas.  Net -2 players and -7 stars.

Georgia

We offered their 4* TE Blazevich.  They offered Harris.  Net 0 players, 0 stars.

Virginia Tech

We offered their 4* Ja'Von Harrison.  They offered Bunting and Bushell-Beatty. Net +1 player, +4 stars.

Miami

We offered their 5* KC McDermott.  They offered Marshall and Winovich.   Net +1 player, +2 stars.

3 weeks 4 days ago Henson

Drew was the best raw talent to ever play the position in the winged helmet. Timing for him sucked. If he'd stayed his fourth year in 2001, it would have been with a totally wiped out offense. Navarre picked up the pieces as best he could that year, but that offense was firing on 2 cylinders.

And this is coming from a guy who graduated in 1982.

6 weeks 6 days ago hands?

Wouldn't kicking the ball with the front feet be considered "hands"?

8 weeks 18 hours ago his name's been bugging me all morning

I'm pretty sure Prepolec went to Cranbrook in 7th grade -- same as me, same year -- and then went on to BH JH and Lahser HS.  We both played football on Cranbrook's 7th grade squad.  I think...  Anyway, he was huge but too nice of a guy to play big time college OL.  There just wasn't any "nasty" in him.  I don't doubt, though that he walked on in '77 or '78.  He would have graduated Lahser in 77.

9 weeks 4 days ago The map room

My favorite indoor place on campus. Top floor of the grad. Awesome view of campus and drawers and drawers of maps, just maps.

Of course they may have done away with it at some point in the last 31 years....

9 weeks 5 days ago MSC

I was going to ask the same question.  When you run one of the 10-15 highest regarded universities in the world, you tend to have more important things to worry about than landing a 17 year-old football recruit.  Or for that matter, the football team.  or for that matter, the athletic department.

Sure, you say, but the athletic department brings in a lot of money, right?  Uh, yeah, but it's not all that important when you've got an $8 billion endowment.  And revenue flowing in from all sorts of other sources that dwarfs the AD's.

Gordon Gee, yeah, I guess he has to earn his ridiculous salary somehow.

10 weeks 10 hours ago Perspective

Dutch, I've got 14 years on you. I was listening to the Harry Oliver game (friends of mine named their dog Harryoliver) with my roommates in the living room of my rental on Adams, three blocks north of the stadium. We were listening because it was being played in Indiana.

What you also don't remember is that Butch (don't call me Harold) Woolfolk had a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter.

See, the thing is you really can't count on more than one hand the games Michigan deserved to win and ended up losing. Generally, losses happen to teams that are flawed and we've never enjoyed a flawless Michigan team. There are plenty of games they got lucky winning. Even Woodson's team almost lost to ND and Iowa. And Glen Rice's team was a frickin 6 seed with an interim coach.

Shit happens. My perspective has evolved from being crushed or elated at losing or winning big games, to having various shades of pride in my teams and their rosters. Lately, my pride overflows. Fergodsakes.

10 weeks 14 hours ago plus a million

For that one.

Remember: it's their rivalry, not ours.

10 weeks 14 hours ago Damn shame, a pet peeve

I am as into politics as I am Michigan football and basketball. Those two things (and golf and pretty women) fill my head all day every day.

It's really disappointing that anything having to do with politics is verbotin on this site.  Not that I'm disagreeing with the ban, rather that, for some reason, passion over politics gets ugly in about a nanosecond in a medium like this.  If "Clinton" or "Bush" are words used for anything other than street names, all hell breaks loose.  Even if the reference is clearly ON-topic like the one that started this thread.

It just bums me out.

10 weeks 1 day ago WTF?

I mean seriously, WTF?!?!?!? Michigan is playing in the NCG tonight?

This past three weekends have been surreal, hard to internalize.  The clobbering of VCU. The Shot.  The clobbering of Florida.  Mitch effing McGary!?!?!?

1989 comes to mind first and 1993 isn't even close.  There was the "Michigan Man coaching Michigan" magic that seems to be paralleled this year.  Just my two cents.

10 weeks 2 days ago Acquired taste

I've learned to appreciate all different kinds of cheeses and ethnic cuisines and certainly whiskeys. But plots involving dragons I just can't get into.

He says, as he sits in the kitchen with headphones plugged in to the 19" TV because his wife is watching that stupid show.

14 weeks 1 day ago and if you we're older

you would include Anthony Carter.

14 weeks 1 day ago I like your point here

The General graced us for four years, culminating in the championship. We will not be able to say that about Trey. I love the kid more than any that's ever played for Michigan, but I gotta give it up to Gary Grant.

16 weeks 18 hours ago Great piece, Seth

Thanks so much for that.  I hung on every word.

Please, please, find a similar source on Defense!  On that side of the ball there just seems to be so much more grey area from one position to the next on the DL and with the OLBs.

18 weeks 7 hours ago EMLOS, not EMLOS

Thanks BobbyHill. That blog post, the first I've ever seen on a pro team BTW, was helpful.

From what I can tell, the Sam tends to help out and becomes the end man on the line of scrimmage on the strong side, whereas the WDE is the EMLOS on the weak side. This in turn makes the SDE a third interior line man essentially, no where near the end of the line with contain responsibility.

Ergo, this makes Strobel a really good SDE if he bulks up and Taco and Mario great end contain guys with their leaner size more a linebacker.

Am I on the right track?

18 weeks 11 hours ago SDE v. WDE

This post mentions the importance of picking up an SDE in this class.  Can somebody smarter than me explain the difference in the type of player you want at SDE vs. WDE?  What's more important -- HT/WT, speed, power?

I look at the Depth Chart by class and see Godin, Strobel and Heitzman at SDE and Charleton, Ojemudia, Clark and Beyer at WDE.  They're all returning in 2014 as well.

Based on the fall roster, the SDE group is, on the whole, taller and heavier than the WDEs.  Clark is sort of an exception because he played heavier last year on the interior.  Maybe he takes off a few pounds as more of a rusher.  On the other hand, Strobel was tall but thin (6-6/252) in his redshirt year and I guess we should expect him to be heavier this fall.

Still, these are just generic observations and I'd love to hear a little more insight.  How are the challenges and responsibilities different?  If you have a tweener in terms of height and weight, say 6-4/250, what skills would make him a good WDE vs. SDE?

21 weeks 1 day ago Devin Hester!

Denard is Devin Hester with a brain trained on the offensive side of the ball.

22 weeks 18 hours ago Stenavich

I have had it in my head, but I can't find the proof, that Stenavich actually got some PT in his true freshman year. For that to be true he would have had to get a medical. Regardless, as I remember it, the mass exodus from the 2000 class (hutch, Bachus, Brandt, not to mention Henson, Thomas and Terrell) left LC with 2001 being a rebuilding year, which Stenavich briefly figured in to.
