I think you should cut Coach K some slack, yes he did fly off the handle there but this has been a very emotional week for him. He was close with Kobe Bryant and is most likely still processing his death, as are a lot of people. It does not give him license to be a jerk, but perhaps people should be a little more understanding given the circumstances.

To try to be brief, Men's basketball is a "head counter" sport, in which you have only a certain amount of athletes you can have on scholarship during the academic year (13 for Men's Bball) AND any student-athlete on aid must receive a full scholarship (no partial scholarships that are used in "equivalency" sports). For Football and Men's Bball the recruited status comes into play once you want to give a walk-on a scholarship with respect as to when he will count against your overall scholarship limit (Bylaw 15.5.1.1) which occurs when they compete in a real game which is what "blueshirting" takes advantage of.
In summary; a walk-on (not on scholarship) can play no matter their recruited status, but if they are given a scholarship, they will count against your limits once they compete.

I was a student from '05-'09 and the big highlights in my tenure were that we won the NIT in back to back years and beat Illinois on the road under Amaker. It is easy to forget how far we have come, and how much this program was built on guys like Novak during the early Beilein years.
While this was his first and only year in college, everyone knew by then that you do not get between Blake Griffin and the basket, lest you get dunked on. As soon as Blake got the outlet pass I immediately thought: "please Zack, do not try to defend this" because I knew Zack Novak did not consider that he was most likely going to be decimated by a thunderous Blake Griffin dunk. His only thought as a 6' 4" guy, going up against a 6' 10" athlete who could leap out of the gym, was that he needed to get back and try to draw a charge (he did not), because that is what his team needed.
And that is what leaders do: whatever is necessary for their team.
Completely agree. This is one of my biggest pet-peeves in all of sports that players refuse to shoot Rick Barry/Jackie Moon style on their free-throws. It's just stupid that players think it's more embarrassing to shoot under-handed than it is to constantly miss free throws and need to be taken out of games in critical situations because you're such a liability.
If I were a basketball coach one of my main rules would be if you shoot less than 70-65% at the line, you must shoot Rick Barry style.
The concern for me is that this might signal Don Brown is close to taking the Temple job and Mattison was told he would not be given the DC job, so he pulled a Marcus Hall out the door.

Anyone else notice Joel Klatt mentioned that we were worst in the country at converting 3rd and long EVERY SINGLE TIME it came up, but failed to mention that Sparty was 0-fer on the day on 3rd and 4th down of any distance.
I know we never get announcers friendly to us outside of Griese, but that was too annoying.
There are some great comments that explain it pretty well, but my two cents is that scripted plays work well against us because Don Brown's defense is heavily man-coverage/pressure, and with enough prep time, an offense can script plays that will dictate the defense at the beginning of the game.
Every defense has general rules for how to approach different personnels and formations, and defenders are taught what to key on to decide how they will react to each play. As a few have said Don Brown likes to bring 5 man pressures, and if you do your homework you can pretty much predict how our defense will respond to specific personnel and formations (namely, who the fifth rusher is going to be and whether he's coming from the field or boundary), thus, giving your offense an advantage.
In doing so, an offense will give you a personnel/formation you have seen on film and have practiced against, they will apply your rules to predict how your defense will respond, and then create a wrinkle that will confuse your defenders just enough to create the opportunity for a positive play. You then have one of your coaches up in the booth watching the defense to see if they are reacting how you thought they were going to, if they are, you continue with your script.
This will work for the first few series, but give Don Brown and his assistants enough time to draw up the adjustments, and coach up their players on the sidelines, and they will shut you down.
Speaking as someone who worked on an FCS staff helping breakdown game film during a losing season, there is nothing more discouraging than having to re-watch a game like that to analyze what went wrong and how to fix it. Especially for someone like Brian who has to breakdown film off of a tv capture file, without the aid of a purpose built program like Hudl or DV sport.
That is a central part of the job as a coach, but is borderline cruel and unusual punishment for Brian. (Which is also why I have always assumed we don't get OSU UFR's)
I have mainly attended games as student '05-'09 and haven't been to a home game since the Air Force game in '12 so I don't know if things have changed but I will offer my suggestions:
If you want to see more of the campus before the game, I highly recommend you park in one of the parking garages in downtown AA, I used the one by Scorekeepers or around that area (you might need to come from the Plymouth Hwy 23 side of town for this as I think coming from 94 just funnels you toward the stadium) this will allow you to walk through most of central campus like the Diag, the libraries, student Union and then the Law Quad (an absolute must, definitely go inside the reading room) and you can follow the student crowd down State Street. A cavaet though if you're bringing children, this will take you past some of the frats/student houses so there will be plenty of debauchery going down, but nothing past loud uncensored music and lots of drinking and will give you the full "college experience". But you can always go down S Division to bypass most of that.
I then highly recommend you take a right onto E Hoover Street, walk past the IM building (is Bongo man still there?) and wait outside Revelli hall which is where the band departs from. If you get there early enough the drumline put on a show before the whole band forms up, and marches to the Big House. This will put you on the opposite end of the stadium from where your seats are, but I would argue it's not that much of an inconvenience. If you park near the stadium, it will be too much of a walk to and from campus to make it worth it.
For food I recommend the Northside Grill for breakfast (near the hospital), and Zingermann's Roadhouse for dinner (but it will be super packed so try to make a reservation if you can), or the Red Hawk Grill which is right on state street. Either way, walking through AA will present plenty of options for you.

The sideline was in the BPONE themselves in the first quarter of this game. I can't remember if it was after the second ND touchdown or the Metellus ejection, but they cut to Harbaugh on the sidelines and you can see he had a VERY concerned expression on his face, with downcast eyes, clearly mumbling obscenities to himself in the vein of "oh shit, we haven't fixed anything and we're screwed." I know all coaches do this to some extent, but it usually happens with "micro" issues like a single player missing an assignment or a getting a bad penalty. And even then this will constitute the coach ripping off his headset and running up to the offending player to admonish them/coach them up to make sure the singular mistake does not happen again.
But how can you address the issue when it's a majority of the team causing a 14-0 deficit, and not just one player missing an assignment? Looking at Harbaugh and the sideline in general, it was definitely a "macro" issue of falling into the BPONE after a series of bad plays. Even when we started to come back there was very little sustained energy. It was clear we had not attacked that day with any kind of enthusiasm.
I feel that is where most of the negativity stems from, that this wasn't a one-off bad performance, but symptomatic of a long lingering condition with no obvious cure in sight except for a protracted battle where much pain will have to be endured before relief can be found (if ever). Now, I don't want to be Chicken little as this was just the first game, and I will remind folks that we ripped off 8 straight wins after The Horror and Oregon debacles to make a BCS bowl that year. But, Jake Long and Mike Hart ain't walking through that door.
This could actually be serious for TAMU, the NCAA takes Coach's monitoring voluntary workouts / forcing players to participate in workouts outside of their playing and practice season very seriously. The rules are very clear you can not do this in any fashion whatsoever. Only S & C staff are allowed to be present for voluntary workouts, and they would violate NCAA rules if they report attendance to the coaches. In part of their hypocrisy, the NCAA considers this a "Student-Athlete Well Being" issue and come down hard of folks. (I would know, I worked for an FCS program that ran afoul of this)
Especially for football as there are rules specifically for FB and basketball that state you can require football student-athletes to participate in off-season workouts if they have completed a certain amount of units that year even if they aren't taking summer classes (you can mandate workouts anytime a student-athlete is enrolled in classes). Also, for FBS you are also required to declare certain periods of time during the off season where no football player is required to do anything by the coaches, so if they were in fact doing this it could be mean actual violations.
While this wouldn't cost Jimbo his job, he would still be named in the violation and they would be docked CARA hours during the regular season as punishment. So instead of getting the normal 20 hours per week, they might only get 17-18 hours a week, meaning less practice, film, weight room time and being put on probation for a year or two.
First of all read the article, as many people have pointed out they are just replacing their remedial math class that don't count towards your degree with classes that do.
Second, this is a trend in all of higher ed. Remedial classes are being identified as a major barrier for student success (degree attainment) across all of higher ed, i.e. students get stuck in an often long line of remedial pre-reqs before being able to take classes that finally count towards their degree. Students are placed in these classes as a result of high-stakes placement tests which a student can struggle on for a variety of reasons.
This leads to students being required to take classes that are very expensive and time consuming that don't even count towards your degree. Making matters worse is that poor and minority students usually make up a bulk of the remediation class population which thus widens the achievement gap if they are unable to pass.
I work in Higher Ed in California and the Community College and State University systems are essentially doing away with remediation altogether as a matter of equity. I can go on all day about this but the bottom line is that the data shows remediation doesn't improve a student's chance of succeeding in the following higher level classes, so they might as well start off in college level courses as an equitable use of their time and money.
I was there at Olympic on Sunday and stayed on 18 almost all day where the crowd was fairly tame and didn't bother the players. I would say it was a lack of security as how the crowd was structured around 18 he could have only come from one place (that being from the left of the interview). Any ways it was a great tournament but I was dissapointed not to see Furyk give it up, but when you go 68-68 on the weekend at a course like Olympic, you deserve to win. There was also some idiot dressed in a tiger costume the whole day which reminded me of The Peguin/Frankenberry Guy who went to Hockey games in my day. Dressing up in a ridiculous costume at a college hockey game is acceptable and funny, dressing up at a golf event as a grown man is not.
My brother got me into watching cycling when I was a kid and I have watched every tour since right after Miguel Indurain's reign. I also grew up in the Bay Area and Barry Bonds was the only reason I became a baseball fan, and Miguel Tejada was my other favorite player. After paying attention to the BALCO scandal and cycling, I know far too much about PED's.
You are right about cycling, everyone Lance beat was doping their minds out and Lance's teammates have said he demanded they dope, There was Tyler Hamilton's accusation of the fridge full of blood, and Floyd Landis' claims of the team doping. Of course these two guys were caught red-handed and thus had incentive to lie about Lance's PED use, and both were banned from international competition (with Landis getting his Tour title stripped). It must be noted that the French Government and European Press did everything within their power to catch Lance. The US government investigated Lance for improper use of government funds, as using US Postal Service sponsor dollars to fund and cover up his alleged doping would have been a serious felony, and found nothing. But of course the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence and so forth.
Doping in cycling is unique as you stated it's not about increasing muscle mass, it's about carrying more oxygen in your blood which is what the PED EPO is designed to do (what Lance is most accused of taking). They even had to ban Viagra as a PED because it dilates artieries and allows better blood flow at higher elevations (very useful when you climb the highest mountain in europe on a bicycle. So Lance was either a freak of nature who used his battle with cancer to motivate himself to ingore pain, and to never stop pedaling, or he is the greatest cheater of all time. I prefer the former.

I'm a big 49ers fan and love this pickup. Troy Smith is no longer on our roster so that's not a problem. I was sad that we let David Baas go but then we signed Jonathon Goodwin so it evened out and we also cut Nate Clements's lame-ass so we came out way ahead in my book.
It will be interesting to see if Braylon can push Crabtree as he's a bigger diva than Braylon and he hasn't even done anything the NFL, so we'll see if that has an effect.

for the info, this was an immeadiate purchase. As I have said before there's reason to believe The Dude went to UM as he says he was one of the authors of the original Port Huron Statement (not the compromised second draft) and we all know SDS started in Ann Arbor so this might not be OT.
He's got big time academic problems, I work in a academic center at a FCS school in northern california keeping kids eligible and I can say with certainty that the only way this kid is such a big academic liability is that he completely screwed up his own situation.
The only way he could be deemed ineligible for the bowl game and then become such a big liability for his next school is that he completely screwed up in a few way:
1.He must have had an ugly freshman year, which would be somewhat understandable as adjusting to college in the first place is hard, much less in a place like Michigan which is not academically easy, and then adjusting to living in a different state, and then being expected to carry the load of a new offense by a coach know for not being very sympathic to young kids' needs.
2. Because of that bad first year, he must of been on some kind of academic probation or special watch list, and knowing what kind of reporting system we have at my school, I'm sure UM's support system for its student-athletes is just as good, meaning I'm sure he had at least one personal academic mentor within the student-athlete academic center who then had at least one supervisor asking him every other day how Tate was doing and then performing grade checks and most likely speaking personally to his teachers. So even with this amount of support he was still screwing up. (Once again I have no personal knowledge of UM's academic support system, but this is what we do at my school which has nowhere near the same resources or standards as UM so I feel it is safe to assume UM has the same if not more support practices).
3. Because of the attention paid to him by the athletic department I'm sure he worked up quite a reputation for himself amongst the faculty who I'm sure don't like to give breaks to athletes, so he was on double watch.
4. He then proceeded not to go to class, do any homework, not show up for tests, and ignore any advances from his teachers (if there were any). This would have the effect of his teachers giving him straight F's (or E's as we do at UM) instead of incompletes which would help facilitate his transfers much easier.
5. He therefore must of been lying to his mentor, teachers, and coaches about his schoolwork and burnt every last bridge at UM.
6. Talk to any regular student who has had similar academic trouble with UM and they can tell you they can be rather vindictive to students who burn bridges and make it hard for them to find a new school.
7. Add this all up and Tate has dug himself a very deep hole which his athletic ability will not help him get out of, and he has put himself in this position.
8. Finally if UH denied him so quickly he must have serious issues, this the same school who took in Colt Brennan who had much more serious problems AFTER he went to a JC so it seems like Tate has few other options if any.
I've been watching the tour since the late 90's from the days of Richard Virenque and Jan Ulrich, I even watched the tour when Marco Pantani was doped out of his mind to dominate the race, and this year has been somewhat unispiring. I've mostly enjoyed Thor Hushovd hanging around the top of the GC which is uncommon for such a big sprinter. I have to agree that Contador's hurting from the Giro but the lack of PED's has most likely played a part. This is all gonna come down to Alp D'Huez and the individual TT which I think are back to back before they head to Paris.
From my experience the bast two climbs the tour goes through are Alp D'Huez and Mon Venteux, both sites of great Lance rides, and as I said they go up Alp D.Huez just before they head to Paris so that will seperate the men from the boys. I'm pulling for Andy Schleck for the main win and hope Mark Cavendish holds on to the Green Jersey unless Thor can pull through in the TT.
Voekler has been one of my favorite riders since he pulled off that massive breakaway a few years back. Other than Lance, my favorite rider was Erik Zabel who dominated the Green Jersey for a number of years and its good to see they increase the amount of sprints through the mountains so sprinters just can't slack through the high climbs.
One of my favorite things to do in AA is run through the arb at night while its snowing, that eeire red glow lights your way and is one of my best experiences at college, some of the paths ice over so its best to go just as it starts to snow, the complete silence and the sight of the snow falling is just too awesome not to experience

Pretty much all modern day music sucks, its either Justin Bieber disney propaganda, or some rapper with lil' in front of his name so that makes him cool, or whiny ass singers like cold play or Linkin Park. I hate most country music but it really bothers me that there's a popular band called Lady Antebellum, as any history major knows, the term "antebellum" is a euphemism for describing the South under slavery, so their name should be "Lady Slavery," but I guess their fans like that sort of thinking.
agree completely with Maximinus above, but at least dave matthews actually plays instruments, still don't like him. I think Red Hot Chilli Peppers was the last good band to really do anything, just look at the highest grossing tour acts for the past few years, Bon Jovi and U2 still lead the way..
It also makes me mad that things like Glee and High School musical have more hits and album sales than real bands like the beatles and stones

Anyone else notice Joel Klatt mentioned that we were worst in the country at converting 3rd and long EVERY SINGLE TIME it came up, but failed to mention that Sparty was 0-fer on the day on 3rd and 4th down of any distance.
I know we never get announcers friendly to us outside of Griese, but that was too annoying.

There are some great comments that explain it pretty well, but my two cents is that scripted plays work well against us because Don Brown's defense is heavily man-coverage/pressure, and with enough prep time, an offense can script plays that will dictate the defense at the beginning of the game.
Every defense has general rules for how to approach different personnels and formations, and defenders are taught what to key on to decide how they will react to each play. As a few have said Don Brown likes to bring 5 man pressures, and if you do your homework you can pretty much predict how our defense will respond to specific personnel and formations (namely, who the fifth rusher is going to be and whether he's coming from the field or boundary), thus, giving your offense an advantage.
In doing so, an offense will give you a personnel/formation you have seen on film and have practiced against, they will apply your rules to predict how your defense will respond, and then create a wrinkle that will confuse your defenders just enough to create the opportunity for a positive play. You then have one of your coaches up in the booth watching the defense to see if they are reacting how you thought they were going to, if they are, you continue with your script.
This will work for the first few series, but give Don Brown and his assistants enough time to draw up the adjustments, and coach up their players on the sidelines, and they will shut you down.
Speaking as someone who worked on an FCS staff helping breakdown game film during a losing season, there is nothing more discouraging than having to re-watch a game like that to analyze what went wrong and how to fix it. Especially for someone like Brian who has to breakdown film off of a tv capture file, without the aid of a purpose built program like Hudl or DV sport.
That is a central part of the job as a coach, but is borderline cruel and unusual punishment for Brian. (Which is also why I have always assumed we don't get OSU UFR's)
I have mainly attended games as student '05-'09 and haven't been to a home game since the Air Force game in '12 so I don't know if things have changed but I will offer my suggestions:
If you want to see more of the campus before the game, I highly recommend you park in one of the parking garages in downtown AA, I used the one by Scorekeepers or around that area (you might need to come from the Plymouth Hwy 23 side of town for this as I think coming from 94 just funnels you toward the stadium) this will allow you to walk through most of central campus like the Diag, the libraries, student Union and then the Law Quad (an absolute must, definitely go inside the reading room) and you can follow the student crowd down State Street. A cavaet though if you're bringing children, this will take you past some of the frats/student houses so there will be plenty of debauchery going down, but nothing past loud uncensored music and lots of drinking and will give you the full "college experience". But you can always go down S Division to bypass most of that.
I then highly recommend you take a right onto E Hoover Street, walk past the IM building (is Bongo man still there?) and wait outside Revelli hall which is where the band departs from. If you get there early enough the drumline put on a show before the whole band forms up, and marches to the Big House. This will put you on the opposite end of the stadium from where your seats are, but I would argue it's not that much of an inconvenience. If you park near the stadium, it will be too much of a walk to and from campus to make it worth it.
For food I recommend the Northside Grill for breakfast (near the hospital), and Zingermann's Roadhouse for dinner (but it will be super packed so try to make a reservation if you can), or the Red Hawk Grill which is right on state street. Either way, walking through AA will present plenty of options for you.

The sideline was in the BPONE themselves in the first quarter of this game. I can't remember if it was after the second ND touchdown or the Metellus ejection, but they cut to Harbaugh on the sidelines and you can see he had a VERY concerned expression on his face, with downcast eyes, clearly mumbling obscenities to himself in the vein of "oh shit, we haven't fixed anything and we're screwed." I know all coaches do this to some extent, but it usually happens with "micro" issues like a single player missing an assignment or a getting a bad penalty. And even then this will constitute the coach ripping off his headset and running up to the offending player to admonish them/coach them up to make sure the singular mistake does not happen again.
But how can you address the issue when it's a majority of the team causing a 14-0 deficit, and not just one player missing an assignment? Looking at Harbaugh and the sideline in general, it was definitely a "macro" issue of falling into the BPONE after a series of bad plays. Even when we started to come back there was very little sustained energy. It was clear we had not attacked that day with any kind of enthusiasm.
I feel that is where most of the negativity stems from, that this wasn't a one-off bad performance, but symptomatic of a long lingering condition with no obvious cure in sight except for a protracted battle where much pain will have to be endured before relief can be found (if ever). Now, I don't want to be Chicken little as this was just the first game, and I will remind folks that we ripped off 8 straight wins after The Horror and Oregon debacles to make a BCS bowl that year. But, Jake Long and Mike Hart ain't walking through that door.
This could actually be serious for TAMU, the NCAA takes Coach's monitoring voluntary workouts / forcing players to participate in workouts outside of their playing and practice season very seriously. The rules are very clear you can not do this in any fashion whatsoever. Only S & C staff are allowed to be present for voluntary workouts, and they would violate NCAA rules if they report attendance to the coaches. In part of their hypocrisy, the NCAA considers this a "Student-Athlete Well Being" issue and come down hard of folks. (I would know, I worked for an FCS program that ran afoul of this)
Especially for football as there are rules specifically for FB and basketball that state you can require football student-athletes to participate in off-season workouts if they have completed a certain amount of units that year even if they aren't taking summer classes (you can mandate workouts anytime a student-athlete is enrolled in classes). Also, for FBS you are also required to declare certain periods of time during the off season where no football player is required to do anything by the coaches, so if they were in fact doing this it could be mean actual violations.
While this wouldn't cost Jimbo his job, he would still be named in the violation and they would be docked CARA hours during the regular season as punishment. So instead of getting the normal 20 hours per week, they might only get 17-18 hours a week, meaning less practice, film, weight room time and being put on probation for a year or two.
First of all read the article, as many people have pointed out they are just replacing their remedial math class that don't count towards your degree with classes that do.
Second, this is a trend in all of higher ed. Remedial classes are being identified as a major barrier for student success (degree attainment) across all of higher ed, i.e. students get stuck in an often long line of remedial pre-reqs before being able to take classes that finally count towards their degree. Students are placed in these classes as a result of high-stakes placement tests which a student can struggle on for a variety of reasons.
This leads to students being required to take classes that are very expensive and time consuming that don't even count towards your degree. Making matters worse is that poor and minority students usually make up a bulk of the remediation class population which thus widens the achievement gap if they are unable to pass.
I work in Higher Ed in California and the Community College and State University systems are essentially doing away with remediation altogether as a matter of equity. I can go on all day about this but the bottom line is that the data shows remediation doesn't improve a student's chance of succeeding in the following higher level classes, so they might as well start off in college level courses as an equitable use of their time and money.
This aggresion will not stand, man!

I was there at Olympic on Sunday and stayed on 18 almost all day where the crowd was fairly tame and didn't bother the players. I would say it was a lack of security as how the crowd was structured around 18 he could have only come from one place (that being from the left of the interview). Any ways it was a great tournament but I was dissapointed not to see Furyk give it up, but when you go 68-68 on the weekend at a course like Olympic, you deserve to win. There was also some idiot dressed in a tiger costume the whole day which reminded me of The Peguin/Frankenberry Guy who went to Hockey games in my day. Dressing up in a ridiculous costume at a college hockey game is acceptable and funny, dressing up at a golf event as a grown man is not.
My brother got me into watching cycling when I was a kid and I have watched every tour since right after Miguel Indurain's reign. I also grew up in the Bay Area and Barry Bonds was the only reason I became a baseball fan, and Miguel Tejada was my other favorite player. After paying attention to the BALCO scandal and cycling, I know far too much about PED's.
You are right about cycling, everyone Lance beat was doping their minds out and Lance's teammates have said he demanded they dope, There was Tyler Hamilton's accusation of the fridge full of blood, and Floyd Landis' claims of the team doping. Of course these two guys were caught red-handed and thus had incentive to lie about Lance's PED use, and both were banned from international competition (with Landis getting his Tour title stripped). It must be noted that the French Government and European Press did everything within their power to catch Lance. The US government investigated Lance for improper use of government funds, as using US Postal Service sponsor dollars to fund and cover up his alleged doping would have been a serious felony, and found nothing. But of course the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence and so forth.
Doping in cycling is unique as you stated it's not about increasing muscle mass, it's about carrying more oxygen in your blood which is what the PED EPO is designed to do (what Lance is most accused of taking). They even had to ban Viagra as a PED because it dilates artieries and allows better blood flow at higher elevations (very useful when you climb the highest mountain in europe on a bicycle. So Lance was either a freak of nature who used his battle with cancer to motivate himself to ingore pain, and to never stop pedaling, or he is the greatest cheater of all time. I prefer the former.

I'm a big 49ers fan and love this pickup. Troy Smith is no longer on our roster so that's not a problem. I was sad that we let David Baas go but then we signed Jonathon Goodwin so it evened out and we also cut Nate Clements's lame-ass so we came out way ahead in my book.
It will be interesting to see if Braylon can push Crabtree as he's a bigger diva than Braylon and he hasn't even done anything the NFL, so we'll see if that has an effect.

He's got big time academic problems, I work in a academic center at a FCS school in northern california keeping kids eligible and I can say with certainty that the only way this kid is such a big academic liability is that he completely screwed up his own situation.
The only way he could be deemed ineligible for the bowl game and then become such a big liability for his next school is that he completely screwed up in a few way:
1.He must have had an ugly freshman year, which would be somewhat understandable as adjusting to college in the first place is hard, much less in a place like Michigan which is not academically easy, and then adjusting to living in a different state, and then being expected to carry the load of a new offense by a coach know for not being very sympathic to young kids' needs.
2. Because of that bad first year, he must of been on some kind of academic probation or special watch list, and knowing what kind of reporting system we have at my school, I'm sure UM's support system for its student-athletes is just as good, meaning I'm sure he had at least one personal academic mentor within the student-athlete academic center who then had at least one supervisor asking him every other day how Tate was doing and then performing grade checks and most likely speaking personally to his teachers. So even with this amount of support he was still screwing up. (Once again I have no personal knowledge of UM's academic support system, but this is what we do at my school which has nowhere near the same resources or standards as UM so I feel it is safe to assume UM has the same if not more support practices).
3. Because of the attention paid to him by the athletic department I'm sure he worked up quite a reputation for himself amongst the faculty who I'm sure don't like to give breaks to athletes, so he was on double watch.
4. He then proceeded not to go to class, do any homework, not show up for tests, and ignore any advances from his teachers (if there were any). This would have the effect of his teachers giving him straight F's (or E's as we do at UM) instead of incompletes which would help facilitate his transfers much easier.
5. He therefore must of been lying to his mentor, teachers, and coaches about his schoolwork and burnt every last bridge at UM.
6. Talk to any regular student who has had similar academic trouble with UM and they can tell you they can be rather vindictive to students who burn bridges and make it hard for them to find a new school.
7. Add this all up and Tate has dug himself a very deep hole which his athletic ability will not help him get out of, and he has put himself in this position.
8. Finally if UH denied him so quickly he must have serious issues, this the same school who took in Colt Brennan who had much more serious problems AFTER he went to a JC so it seems like Tate has few other options if any.
I've been watching the tour since the late 90's from the days of Richard Virenque and Jan Ulrich, I even watched the tour when Marco Pantani was doped out of his mind to dominate the race, and this year has been somewhat unispiring. I've mostly enjoyed Thor Hushovd hanging around the top of the GC which is uncommon for such a big sprinter. I have to agree that Contador's hurting from the Giro but the lack of PED's has most likely played a part. This is all gonna come down to Alp D'Huez and the individual TT which I think are back to back before they head to Paris.
From my experience the bast two climbs the tour goes through are Alp D'Huez and Mon Venteux, both sites of great Lance rides, and as I said they go up Alp D.Huez just before they head to Paris so that will seperate the men from the boys. I'm pulling for Andy Schleck for the main win and hope Mark Cavendish holds on to the Green Jersey unless Thor can pull through in the TT.
Voekler has been one of my favorite riders since he pulled off that massive breakaway a few years back. Other than Lance, my favorite rider was Erik Zabel who dominated the Green Jersey for a number of years and its good to see they increase the amount of sprints through the mountains so sprinters just can't slack through the high climbs.
One of my favorite things to do in AA is run through the arb at night while its snowing, that eeire red glow lights your way and is one of my best experiences at college, some of the paths ice over so its best to go just as it starts to snow, the complete silence and the sight of the snow falling is just too awesome not to experience
while getting giddy myself over the start of the season in a few weeks, I started worrying over certain things which are common before the season, but more so this year, so I ask every true blue faithful to utter this prayer every night before you sleep to aide in our quest:

Pretty much all modern day music sucks, its either Justin Bieber disney propaganda, or some rapper with lil' in front of his name so that makes him cool, or whiny ass singers like cold play or Linkin Park. I hate most country music but it really bothers me that there's a popular band called Lady Antebellum, as any history major knows, the term "antebellum" is a euphemism for describing the South under slavery, so their name should be "Lady Slavery," but I guess their fans like that sort of thinking.
agree completely with Maximinus above, but at least dave matthews actually plays instruments, still don't like him. I think Red Hot Chilli Peppers was the last good band to really do anything, just look at the highest grossing tour acts for the past few years, Bon Jovi and U2 still lead the way..
