Including, you have to imagine, every last drop of joy and happiness that HE got out of the program. Can't be fun getting your dream job and fucking it up with such royal completeness. So long, Brady. May you have happier days somewhere far, far away from Michigan Stadium.

After watching Duke-MSU and then Kentucky-KU last night, I woke up this morning and my first conscious thought was, "Jesus Christ, Kentucky is tall as shit."

|1 week 4 days ago||Thanks for this. Can you do||
Thanks for this. Can you do the analysis for past years? It always seemed to me like M's injury rate was higher under Barwis than other teams', as it does now for Wellman. That might just be proximity bias because I obviously pay more attention to Michigan than to other teams, but this is starting to confirm that vague suspicion.
For further reading: "Prediction of Sports Injuries by Mathematical Models" (free full text):
"Sports injuries are most commonly caused by poor training methods; structural abnormalities; weakness in muscles, tendons, ligaments; and unsafe exercising environments. ... The most common cause of sports injuries is improper training whether from a technical or tactical point of view or simply training that is poorly planned and executed (Shaffer, 2006). The athlete exposes him or herself to possible sports injuries without adequate preparation for: exposure to potential danger, the playing position or type of activity, the duration of the competition or league, competition level, time dedicated to training and to rest. These variables can be quantified and turned into predictive factors (Ferrara, 2007)."
That statement doesn't prove anything, of course. Just food for thought.

Coming in here a day late (I was in transit yesterday so missed the game) to congratulate both the punter and the counterpunter for being so close to the actual score in their guesses. Good job, gentlemen.
Not a game I'm especially sad to have missed.

Heading home from Kabul, gettin' ready to spend 33 hours in transit. Will miss Michigan's devastation of our even sadder Northwestern cousins. But on the other end...bacon. And in the meantime, this incredibly hypnotic gif.

When I saw this the first thing that popped into my head was literally "Ode to Joy." Even before I saw that the Beaker version is on the front page. That one is great but the full choir captures the feeling in my heart a bit better.
So, go listen to "Ode to Joy" and share my, our, the world's, well, joy.
Bye Dave, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Here is my contribution to this wonderful idea. The masses to the left and right of the shield are wolverines, god help me.
If someone cleans this up and makes a shirt of it I'd drop $20 on it, no problem.

+1000. This really was one of the most remarkable moment of the whole business. For two reasons:
1. This was in the course of him trying to describe how his feelings were hurt by people saying out loud that he should be fired. He was trying to say something like, "I've got feelings, you know."
2. Yes you are, Dave. That's the entire fucking point. Your tone deafness is truly breathtaking in its completeness.

He knows they won't bench him? What the hell are you talking about? They DID bench him. Remember, just the other week, when Shane Morris started and then got his ankle fucked up and then got concussed, and only then did they put Gardner back in?

I never saw any evidence that Barwis was a good S&C coach, and in fact, apart from his extremely impressive hype machine, the only knowledgeable commentary I ever saw on his methods -- from Charlie Francis and the various S&C coaches on his forum* -- was derisive. The kitchen-sink, yelling-and-screaming approach may help motivate kids to work hard in the gym but that's really only a small part of the S&C coach's responsibility. Helping ensure proper rest and nutrition, using appropriate methods and volumes to improve measurable qualities that enable kids to play better without interfering with their ability to have high-quality practices, and building a strong physical foundation so that kids are less likely to get injured are much more important.
It's disheartening to have so many soft-tissue injuries, and while to some extent those are fluky and Just Happen in a sport like football, it's the S&C staff's job to prevent them as much as possible. The fact that we have so many makes me skeptical that what Wellman et al. are doing is really effective or optimal. In S&C there may be many ways to skin a cat, but there are many more ways to skin a cat messily while also slicing off part of your thumb.
*FWIW, they also had little respect for his predecessor, Gary Moeller.

Same reason Duke fans barely acknowledge Maryland fans:* Because when your main rival is someone else, but their main rival is you, it's much more fun to lord over them and condescend to them than to bring them up to your level by treating them the same way you treat Rival Numero Uno.
Nothing makes Sparty madder than that Michigan talks down to them.
*Yes, I know this is dead now. And, as a Duke fan** who grew up down the street from College Park, it saddens my heart.
**Shut up, my mom went to Duke and my dad went to UNC and I just had to pick when I was little, okay?

Speaking as if DB is already out the door is dangerous from a possible-future-disappointment perspective. It's totally possible that this ass-covering will work. As many others have pointed out, he's got backing from at least the school's highest-profile donor, and probably a bunch of other rich assholes besides. And shake-ups suck for bureaucracies. The Regents may well decide to ride out the storm, force him to be a bit nicer, and then go about their business.
I hope not, just saying maybe let's not get our hopes up too high.

|5 weeks 4 days ago||My senior year, I sat (stood)||
My senior year, I sat (stood) right behind a guy who would show up absolutely blasted every game, usually decked out in M gear (he even had a maize cape with blue block-Ms on it, or maybe it was a blanket that he tied around his neck). He would scream bloody murder for about three quarters and then kind of fade and just stand there, swaying, until the game was over.
Currently, I sit next to my girlfriend on the couch or at the bar. If the game is exciting and going well, she watches with some enjoyment and cowers when I jump around and high-five everyone in the vicinity after big plays. If the game is boring or going badly, she does something else while I sit, absorbed and unable to pay attention to her.
