Not enough five-stars, this list sucks.

As I Duke fan, I say, RIP Dean Smith. You were a hell of a coach and a really nice dude, and this is a super cool thing that you did.

Yeah he's shooting .370 from the field and .322 from three, both worse than last year. His assist numbers are down from 5.0 to 4.4. And his FT shooting has tanked, from .903 to .761. What's going on, Trey?
EDIT: and now this, a freak neck injury. Shit.

The Sugar Bowl unis are good except for the skinny numbers, which look awful. I'm cool with maize outline but the numbers should be bold.

A big fat NO to the yellow apron strings, as someone called them on the forum.

you're right, huggy bear was the coach through beasley's senior year of high school. frank martin took over that fall. i stand corrected.

I do declare, I believe I saw AJ Williams winning a block. Harbaugh.

Yep, and add "personality of coaches" to the things I have a hard time getting worked up about. I don't know the guy personally and therefore I give approximately zero fucks whether he is nice or not. He has led my team to four national championships, two of which I was old enough to truly appreciate. Therefore, he is Polish Jesus, and praise be unto his name.
Jim Harbaugh doesn't have a reputation as a sweetheart, either, and you won't see anyone getting upset about it. Hell, we laugh at the story about him ruining a ten-year-old's day. If we win the B1G this year he can piss on my house and I'll still give him a hug after he zips up.
OTOH, K is a defender of the college-athlete plantation system, as are most coaches, so fuck him for that.

"apron strings" is the best description of that abomination that i've yet seen. i don't mind the yellow outline of the numbers, although i think the plain blue a la desmond also looks great. but the piping is heinous and should never have seen the light of day.
design in general, and jersey design in specific, should be simple and unfucked-with. road unis should have maize pants with a block M on the top of the left thigh, white jerseys with bold blue numbers front, back and shoulder pads; bold blue names; and either a blue block M above the name or (ideally but unrealistically) a small blue MICHIGAN above the front number in place of the manufacturer's logo. home jerseys the same but with blue shirts and yellow type. clean, badass.
wild jerseys can be fun -- i count myself among the rare fans of maryland's flag jerseys, although the failure to reverse the emblems on the helmet so that they were opposite those on the shoulders was pretty epic -- but michigan doesn't need it. the jerseys are iconic on their own, the helmet is iconic on its own. leave it be.

Duke fan here. (Yeah, yeah, fuck me.) I'd be shocked if you're wrong, Krzyzewski has probably overnotseen plenty of shenanigans in his day.
I have a hard time getting outraged about paying recruits and all that jazz because, while it's cheating and it's unfair and it exploits children, it's an obvious response to a terrible, corrupt system that deprives players of the right to earn money from their skills.
|2 days 21 hours ago||Yeah lots of coaches look the||
Yeah lots of coaches look the other way with recruiting shenanigans, not to say actively encourage it. Calipari is just the most obvious example right now because his teams are so successful and he gets such a laughably huge proportion of elite HS players. But I don't think he's "dirtier" than any number of other coaches. Frank Martin is a good addition to the list, I'd bet my bottom dollar that Michael Beasley got paid good money to leave Baltimore for Manhattan. I don't think allowing or encouraging recruiting violations makes a coach especially dirty, just normally dirty.
You need some extra-special dirt to stand out. Dana Kirk had it.
It's a different kind of dirtiness, but John Chaney was a fucking asshole who intentionally had his guys maul players on opposing teams.

Not relevant and I'm honestly not sure why this bothers me so much, but by god this is terrible writing: "If Wooden was the father figure of UCLA basketball, Gilbert was its shadowy one."
Gilbert was its shadowy one what? Shadowy figure? Shadowy father? Shadowy father figure. If the latter, then why doesn't Wooden also get a qualifier on father figure? Shouldn't he be its "sainted" father figure or something?

I came to a similar decision recently about contemporary players, when I realized that many of the players whose jerseys I would once have liked to wear are younger than I am. In some cases, younger than my younger brothers.
Only vintage jerseys for me now, thank you. I'm still on the hunt for a Chris Webber Bullets jersey.

Pickup ultimate frisbee game in Santiago, Chile, my junior year of college. I was chasing my guy downfield on a long throw, leapt up and over his shoulder as he was also jumping, and D'd the disc in the end zone. Without a doubt the greatest play of my life in terms of pure athleticism*. I wish I had it on film.
After I knocked the pass away, I hit the guy's shoulder, tumbled forward and landed on my shoulder. The pain was mild right off the bat but when I stood up and tried to pick up the disc to put it back in play for my team, I realized that I couldn't lift my arm. I trotted off the field and waited out the rest of the game on the sidelines (it was almost over). Somebody helped me put my jacket and backpack on and I took the metro home. The pain increased in severity as I was riding and then walking back to my host family's house, and by the time I got back, probably 45 minutes or an hour after the injury, I was in mild shock.
I opened the front door of the house and before I'd even said hello my host mom's eyes got huge and she said, What happened? Apparently I was white and shaking slightly. I said I'd hurt my shoulder and was going to bed, and if it still hurt in the morning I should maybe go to the hospital. She said, Hell no, we're going right now.
I had to have multiple rounds of x-rays on both the injured and normal shoulders because the emergency doctors and the radiologist on call could not make sense of them. I was given a script for some serious painkillers and a sling and told they would call me in the morning, after they'd had a chance to consult with a senior radiologist.
Turns out I'd separated my shoulder backward, i.e. that my collarbone, instead of popping out and away from my chest, had somehow popped back in toward my scapula. None of the doctors had ever seen such a thing.
Arm in a sling, more painkillers, and much care not to bang into anything for three months. Also my first real beard because I couldn't shave. Good times.
*I am not a great athlete.
|1 week 1 day ago||My reading is that review||
My reading is that review would be taken out of the hands of coaches altogether -- if all penalties are reviewed then there's no need for a challenge.
Still an atrocious idea unless it comes with a time cap on the review. That should exist anyway. If the reviewing ref can't see in 45 seconds that the call was wrong, then the video evidence is probably not indisputable. No more four-minute reviews, please god.
