“The player development is the main thing I like (about Michigan),” Williams said. “You can see that they develop their players. They get them in the gym and they work them hard. And their hard work pays off.”

Me neither, except he's on the PUP list at the moment. Hope it's minor and he can strap on his rocket boots again soon.

Why would the university have trouble enforcing participation in classes? Compensation could be additional to scholarship, so that everyone gets the same base-level thing they get now (full cost of tuition and room and board paid) and anything extra for better players is on top of that. Whole package is contingent on maintaining eligibility. That wouldn't prevent the same sort of UNC-style athlete coddling shenanigans that are going on all over the place but that's not the problem we're talking about right now.
I agree with you about the appeal of college sports being in large part tied to the idea that the kids are fellow students. However tenuously, we had the same relationship to the university as each other -- in some ways they really were my peers while I was at UM: we took the same classes, ate the same crappy dorm cafeteria food, bought weed from the same dealers, etc.
Compensation has to happen, as I think most MGoBlog people agree. But if the link is severed altogether - if football/basketball become another minor league - I think my fandom would fade.

What are you, some kind of wizard? How did you know that I would sigh?

Maybe, but the MGoBloggers have demonstrated over and over (and/or linked to others who have demonstrated) that recruiting rankings are predictive of individual and team success. For a quick position-by-position review, I thought this method was great.
Want to take a crack at that finer-grained breakdown? ;-)

Welcome to Michigan, kid. May your meals be full, your time in the weight room productive, and may the naturally-occuring steroid muscle bath of puberty continue for years to come.

They're consistently in the top 30-40 or so of the Directors' Cup. Peaks in the top 20. Well above average for a D1 program overall.

Haha, definitely second the bit about his wardrobe. The guy would literally wear five or six zip hoodies to class instead of a jacket.

So interesting, I loved Andy Markovits. One of my two or three favorite teachers at UM. I couldn't disagree more about his having an obnoxious ego -- not that you're wrong at all or that your opinion is invalid or anything, just that my experience of him was as a really engaged and engaging professor. Really fun to talk to in office hours, too.
On reflection, maybe I just have a thing for egotistical professors? I loved Ashu Varshney, too (who's now moved on to Brown), and that dude's ego was big-time. Same with Juan Cole. But I never got the impression that Markovits was like them. Varshney and Markovits both liked me (both offered to write me recommendation letters for grad school), which I guess probably colored my view of them.

By the time Denard and RGIII are on the field together, I doubt it. It's only a matter of time before they change it, I think. Chainsaw Dan will never do it of his own free will but I do wonder if Goodell will force him to.
On the other hand, this isn't the first time in my relatively young life (I'm 27) that there's been a surge of protest at the name.
But wait, we were talking about Denard!
EDIT: Apparently I can't embed gifs, so here's a pic instead:

WHY WOULD YOU WANT DENARD TO BE ON TV THIS FALL?!?! That would mean something had gone horribly wrong, like a career-ending injury. I would like Denard to be on TV in 14 years, after a long and productive NFL career in which he is traded to the Washington NFL franchise and we subsequently win the Super Bowl with Denard and RGIII as an unstoppable backfield duo.

Assuming football and basketball are the only sports in the black*, there are about 98 total athletes in profit-making sports at Michigan (85 scholarship football players, 13 scholarship MBB players). That means an average of $153K/year in profit per kid. Jesus.
*Does anyone know if any other teams turn a profit? I doubt it but am curious.

Why? Serious question. I'm genuinely curious why you care or think it's important at all which teams a kid was interested in playing for other than Michigan if that kid ends up a Wolverine. Skill or ability to contribute completely notwithstanding.
It's not like he's going to show up and be like, "Man this place isn't as cool as USC, think I'll dog it."

Buffalo Billiards is a major bar for football Saturdays -- literally hundreds of UM people there for ND, MSU and OSU and a good crowd on any given game weekend. Wouldn't say it's a "Michigan" bar, though, at least not in the way that Kangaroo Boxing Club is. KBC was founded by Michigan alums; their staff shirts say "Michigan Drinking and Yelling." Good barbecue, too.
That's if you want to come into DC, though. Not sure what the scene is like in Fairfax.

Ignorant question: Does this mean the coaches stop recruiting the other QBs that we've offered and that might have more upside? E.g., Kyle Kearns and Sheriron Jones. Or do we pack it up and move on.
Not to take anything away from Malzone, obviously -- if the coaches offered then they think he can be great for us and he is clearly excited to be a Wolverine, so three cheers all around -- just asking.
ETA: I just reached 100 MGoPoints and now I can upvote/downvote. Like magic. I may have become slightly erect. I love this site.

Cam Gordon also to the Pats. I feel like getting signed by the Pats is like getting drafted by the Thunder or Spurs in the NBA: sure it's nice to go first overall but then you're probably on a shit team with bad coaching and management. Going to the Pats seems like a good landing place if you can make the team. So godspeed, Cam.
Eastern Michigan had almost as many players taken on as undrafted free agents as we did: two to our three. Staee had eight.
Congrats also to the excellently-named Zurlon Tipton, Central Michigan's lone undrafted free agent to be picked up.
