Domestic …

Favorite airports

  • Domestic - LGA - Terminal C (Delta) and DTW (McNamara)
    • LGA: High ceilings, spacious, great Delta lounge. Main downside is minimal public transportation links
    • DTW: Very simple design, high ceilings, and pretty decent food options.
  • International - SIN and ICN
    • SIN (Singapore) - The most efficient airport I've been to, high levels of automation. Lots of amenities (e.g. movie theater) and great food
    • ICN (Seoul) - Very spacious and tons of dining options. Main downside is how far away it is from Seoul itself.

Least favorite

  • KUL specifically the LCC terminal, you have to go through a giant shopping mall before even getting to any gates

1. I've had success with…

1. I've had success with this video walkthrough, it requires some effort and won't work on the Apple TV via YTTV App.

2. My understanding is by logging into the "home" region of the account, YTTV thinks that you're still based there but the channels you are shown are based on your current location. I'm not sure about the "start" component but live should be based on where YTTV thinks you are currently at.

3. I think so, worst case, you do it for a month or two while they think the other account is traveling and if they hard block, you can cancel.

Additional notes:

  • You can log into the network's app (e.g. Fox for any game on BTN or Fox) and you should be able to watch Michigan games in Portland. They aren't nearly as strict as the NFL is about regional broadcasts which is why you can't watch the Jets when YTTV thinks you're in Portland since the local broadcast network (e.g. Fox and CBS) is highly unlikely to show a Jets game unless they're playing the Seahawks or Niners.
  • I've also had success using VPN via a web browser to watch NFL games. For example, all UMich alumni are given access to a VPN network which places you in Michigan. For Lions games, this tricks Fox into think I'm back in Michigan and with a YTTV log-in, I can watch the Lions. You'll need to find a VPN that let's you choose a state specific IP address though to ensure you can reliably be placed in the NY/NJ region. It's been a while since I've done this so I can't guarantee it'll work, it's possible they may have found a way to find your true location. EDIT - It's not just alumni, I meant it as an example. The full list includes staff, faculty, students, sponsored affiliates, alumni, and retirees.
  • If your cell phone carrier is Verizon you may want to consider this deal where customers on certain unlimited plans will get free Sunday ticket. Personally I decided against it because my current (now discontinued) Verizon plan is a better deal but perhaps the tradeoff is worth it for you.
I currently have Youtube TV …

I currently have Youtube TV (YTTV) and am a big fan, despite the recent price hike. It's a good product and is pretty reliable. I have not used Sling or Hulu live so I can't comment on them.

That being said, there are some restrictions such as zip code and a max of 3 concurrent streams with YTTV. You can avoid them by logging in to the network provider apps (e.g. the fox sports or ESPN app) so if you wanted to get crafty and share with friends you could. The app is also nice workaround because some games may be regional and the apps generally provide full coverage. For example, the second game vs. UNLV is on CBS, I don't think they'll broadcast that nationally but their app should have it.

However, for the first game against ECU, you'll need to get a separate peacock subscription to watch that game. If you have the American Express Platinum card, you can use your monthly digital entertainment credit towards Peacock.

Agreed with the Macbook Air…

Agreed with the Macbook Air recommendations. Unless your daughter needs advanced computing, the Macbook Air will be able to handle all of her use cases without any issues. It's a well built machine and the Magsafe-3 charger will help avoid costly repairs.

I also recommend you check out the UMich tech shop which gives you access to Apple's education pricing or going through Apple's back to school store will also get you up to a $150 gift card depending on what computer you end up buying.

Few things of note:

1. Should your daughter need access to high performance computing, UMich has great cloud computing tools that will allow you to run computationally intensive software on servers instead of on her laptop.

2. There are two Macbook Airs for sale right now, one with a M1 and the other with an M2 processor. It goes without saying that the newer one costs more but based on the differences, it's worth the $200 premium.

3. Make sure you get at least 16GB of RAM.

Yup totally agree. Now that…

Yup totally agree. Now that delta dynamically prices their domestic trips I’ve been burning miles that way since the yield is usually pretty good.

Cash back is solid if you…

Cash back is solid if you want simplicity but the yield is definitely higher for the travel cards. In the case of domestic flights most airlines are dynamically pricing their tickets so you usually get more than the 1 cent per point value and it helps you hedge against devaluation.

I would be cautious about…

I would be cautious about churn and burn, Chase has what’s known as a 5/24 rule where they start to lock down if you’ve opened 5 or more cards across all banks in the past 24 months.

In some cases you can only get a sign up bonus once per card per lifetime so if the bonus isn’t good it may be worth waiting

I recommend starting with…

I recommend starting with your spending habits and whether or not you're tied into an airline (e.g. Delta) as each "travel" card optimizes for spend differently and has various perks that provide some value (e.g Chase Sapphire Reserve gives 10% back on all Lyft rides).

Overall I generally prefer the Chase ecosystem for a few reasons:

  • Their perks are pretty generous and are in categories that I generally benefit from. You definitely get good bang for your buck from both the Sapphire Reserve and Preferred.
  • Sapphire reserve are currently running a promo where you can redeem your points at a 1.5cent/point value on various categories such as restaurants which basically means any yield you get you can multiply by 1.5 (e.g. 3X on flights is really 4.5X). I think sapphire preferred is 1.25
  • It's tied in with United which is part of Star Alliance and has a stronger global network. I am a loyal delta flyer though and only plan on using the points for trips and airfare I normally would not spend money on (e.g. business class tickets)

As a benchmark, you want to get at least 1.4 cents/mile when redeeming points for an airfare. I don't recommend redeeming your card rewards for hotels as they are generally less valuable.

Below is a breakdown of the AMEX and Chase ecosystems and the cards that I have looked at fairly closely and view as the better values. They all have miscellaneous sign-up bonuses and I recommend browsing in incognito mode as you'll sometimes get better deals (I got 150K for the AMEX platinum vs. the standard 100k). Reddit also has a plethora of refer a friend links where you can get better sign-up bonuses instead of the standard offer. I may have some as well if you're interested, I'd have to check, feel free to DM me.

Please note that I only really fly Delta so I haven't paid much attention to what United, American, Southwest, etc have to offer. I'm sure they have cards that are similar to what I've listed below.

AMEX Ecosystem

  • Transfer partners can be found here, just note that there is a $0.006/mile transfer fee.

Delta AMEX Platinum -

  • 1 buy one get one free on delta per year (after your first year)
  • 3X on delta and hotels, 2X on restaurants and groceries
  • Free checked bags and discounted lounge access
  • $250/year

AMEX Gold -

  • 4X on restaurants, groceries, 3X on flights
  • $120 dining credit (specific restaurnts)
  • $120 on Uber
  • $250 annual fee (but net $10 if you use the credits correctly)

AMEX Platinum -

  • 5X on flights, 1X everything else
  • Lounge access to Delta and AMEX Centurion
  • Various other random perks that are too long to list here but are explained on the AMEX Platinum page
  • Annual Fee - $695, but $175 total for up to three additional cards which can also use many of the benefits that the primary card member gets (e.g. lounges)

Chase

  • Transfer partners can be found here, no transfer fee to my knowledge.

Chase Sapphire Reserve -

  • 3x air, hotel, any travel
  • $300 travel credit (good as cash)
  • $550 annual fee (net $250 after the travel credit)

Chase Sapphire Preferred -

  • 3X grocery, dining, and streaming services, 2X on travel
  • $95 annual fee

Hope this helps!

I recommend checking out…

I recommend checking out rtings.com, they're one of the better review sites out there.

I have a LG CX OLED and have been very happy with the purchase.

The key advantages of OLED are: (source)

  • Infinite contrast ratio because it can turn off individual pixels (good for content with dark scenes)
  • Wider viewing angles
  • Picture quality is more consistent across OLED brands whereas QLED tends to have a wider range of quality.

Key disadvantages

  • Brightness, OLED can't get as bright as other TVs (e.g. QLED)
  • Small but existent burn-in risk. I personally haven't had any issues (nor do any of my friends who have an OLED) but if you plan on keeping it on for hours at a time on a channel that has a static image (e.g. logos) there is some risk but it's minimal.
  • Price. I haven't seen a 70" OLED for <$1.5k

4K is pretty much a must have at this point (1080p only TVs are rare). 8K is a nice to have but with very limited content out there it's not a must have. Next-gen gaming consoles do support 8K but I'm not aware of any games that currently do so and your plan is to use antiquated video game consoles so it's really a moot point.

If you do end up using a next-gen console for this TV, make sure the TV you buy supports HDMI 2.1. It's a standard that supports higher bandwidth which unlocks 4k/120Hz gaming.

I recommend sticking with one of the major brands (e.g. LG, Sony, Samsung, etc). Having embedded apps in the TV is nice (bigger brands tend to offer more support) and allows you to avoid having to supplement it with another streaming device (e.g. fire stick, apple tv, chromecast, etc).

If you have a chase freedom card, you can get 5% off Amazon this quarter.

You bet, happy to help. Best…

You bet, happy to help. Best of luck with the search.

1.  Who is your carrier and…

1.  Who is your carrier and what type of plan do you have - how many GB's/month, what cost, etc?  Do you use all the GB's you get?  Would you recommend it to others or is it more of 'I dunno, we've just had it for a while'?

Verizon unlimited family plan, each line is on either 5G play more or 5G do more. They each come with 50GB of "premium" data meaning 5G (UWB and mid-band)/4G LTE and then throttled after that. It also comes with 25GB of mobile hot spot. None of us have come close to using that much Even pre-covid I would barely break 6GB in a month, partially because I had access to WiFi most of the time. We each pay $40/month before taxes (includes $10/month autopay + paperless discount). I think all-in it's around $45 or so/month. As other posters have noted, "family" plan economics work very favorably once you get to 4/5 lines per "family".

I recommend the plan when folks ask what I'm on and have been happily with Verizon for well over 10 years at this point. Their customer service is solid and coverage is usually not an issue in urban centers. Verizon isn't as great in rural areas vs. ATT but it's seldomly an issue for me.

Bonus perks are that the 5G play more comes with the Disney+ bundle which includes ESPN+, Hulu standard, and Disney+. It's been one of the more useful perks that I've come across. It also looks like ATT is giving away HBO max for their highest tier plan. Carriers are competing heavily to lock in subscribers and perks like this are a good way of keeping folks locked in and also boost subscriber numbers for their partner streaming services.

2.  What type of phone do you have and is it good/bad/mediocre?  I will add that we have bought used phones from 'swappa.com' and have had very good luck getting pretty recent equipment that functions just fine, at steep discounts.  If you have 5G service, will your older phones still function with it?

I currently have an iPhone XS Max so have been unable to take advantage of the recent 5G rollouts but I also don't use services that need that much bandwidth to begin with. I'm happy with the phone but do plan on upgrading to the iPhone 14 when it's launched in the fall. For the iPhone 13 rollout, carriers gave some very generous subsidies for trade-ins. For example, Verizon was offering $800 for a phone you could buy on swappa for $100. It's an option worth exploring if you want a nicer phone without breaking the bank. There is a very sizeable arbitrage opportunity provided you're willing to stick with a carrier for a while. It does look like AT&T still has some of the higher trade-in values now so that may be worth looking into.

I also recommend reading the tech specs on any 5G phone that you're interested in. 5G has way more variants (grouped into ultra-wide band (UWB), mid-band, and low-band) than 4G LTE, each is a balance between coverage and bandwidth.

Not all 5G phones are created the same so it's good to double check before you commit. Each phone should list the frequencies it supports and you can overlay it with what 5G frequencies your carrier has. ATT/Verzion are more heavily invested in UWB + mid-band whereas T-Mobile has biased towards low-band.

For the average person it probably doesn't matter too much as long as the phone has a 5G modem but for those who want the best coverage, it's worth doing some research especially as 5G becomes more widespread.

Depends on the specific…

Depends on the specific unlimited tier that you have. Full list below

Michigan charges more for the

Michigan charges more for the first credit and a flat fee per credit for any subsequent credits below full time status (12 credits)

I'm not sure what status you would fall under but let's just assume LS&A

1st credit = $870

2nd - 4th credit = $510/each

Total = $2,400 + school fees

*The tuition and fees will likely go up as they are for the Fall 2013 term and not Fall 2014

I went to the Ann Arbor Public School system and my friends in high school had their tuition covered for taking Calc III (Math 215/255/285) during their senior year in high school so you may not have to pay anything. I believe one of the other posters mentioned this as well.

One of the advantages/disadvantges between taking Calc III at UMich and other places is that I think the grade you get at UMich is moved to your actual transcript if you decide to come to UMich for your undergraduate degree. If you take the class at a different institution you'll get the credit but not the grade.

Hope this helps

VPN

Here's the link to VPN access:

http://www.itcom.itd.umich.edu/vpn/

Steps: (Windows, I don't have a MAC and cant' remember the exact process)

1. Select Windows

2. Log-in using your kerberos account

3. Select 32-bit or 64-bit VPN client. You can verify which bit version by doing the following (right click on My Computer and select "Properties", on the window that pops up will show you which bit version you have).

4. Download and install the VPN client.

5. At the bottom of the page after you log-in using your kerberos account is a link that says "Download the UMVPN - All Traffic profile". Download it

6. Open  this profile by selecting "Import" on the VPN client. This will allow you to access non-umich websites when connected via VPN.

7. On the VPN client it will ask you to log-in when you double click on the "UMVPN - All Traffic" link. The username and password are your uniqname and kerberos password

8. If successfully connected the window will dissapear and on the bottom right hand corner of your screen in the taskbar area will be a yellow pad lock that is in a "locked" position

I didn't have any luck using an alumni account a while back but I know it works for current students (and I would guess it works current faculty and staff but I haven't verified that it does)

VPN

If you're lucky enough to still have access to your UMICH kerberos account you can use Michigan's VPN network to get espn3 which has today's game on it.
