I meant they won't be able…

I meant they won't be able to just pay some 5-Star 500K to show up, or not show up as is the case with some NIL deals. Just more oversight that ensures things are above board as far as what is being paid, what was done, and making sure players actually get paid. Which is another NIL issue that doesn't get covered much.

You can't directly pay a…

You can't directly pay a player for nothing, and it states they are not employees, but the school can pay them for being in marketing videos and other promotional things. It will probably be very heavily monitored since it's a university and not a car dealership, but should be a good thing for ADs and players. Wonder if this means they can get a cut on jersey sales that reference their name?

Well, if Twitter is mad then…

Well, if Twitter is mad then I'm sure he'll learn his lesson. Just like everyone else who Twitter gets mad at.

I love Rich being a national…

I love Rich being a national media guy who's a complete M homer. I know some guys, like a Herbie, can't do that and still be respected in their role. But Rich sure as hell can and it's awesome.

If he doesn't light it up on…

If he doesn't light it up on his rookie deal, he's not going to get to pick his situation and go be a starter. He might be out of the league. Guys that don't pan out on their rookie deal don't just go to a great franchise, get the keys to the team, and begin to shine in a second phase. People don't even know if Justin Fields is good, average, or bad, and he got shipped to the Steelers to compete with a washed up Russ for a starting job.

The Texans are a unique case…

The Texans are a unique case too. I wouldn't say the franchise is well run, but they've had good coaching, developed DeShaun, and had good offenses. But a rookie HC is a complete unknown as to whether or not they can turn a franchise around and Ryans seems like that kind of guy. So in that situation, it seems like the timing was perfect and Stroud is now obviously an elite guy. But if Stroud had been drafted a couple years earlier when they were in their Jack Easterbey phase of life, then maybe he looks more pedestrian.

Atlanta would be a good landing spot, depending on how the coaching regime pans out. Cousins is a perfect guy to be around for JJ and the talent they have on offense is really good. But is Raheem Morris the guy to build a staff that can develop him?

Total Expert Opinion Here:I…

Total Expert Opinion Here:

I think he's a Top 5 pick if the team has good coaches in place to develop him and utilize him correctly. And at a franchise that has stability from the top down. This isn't an earth shattering insight, but I don't know if he has the experience yet, or the overall skill to just lift an entire franchise. Not many guys do. So he may not be a Top 5 guy to those teams because they want something more polished or proven.

I actually didn't think Trevor Lawrence would be the all-world QB he was advertised as, but going to the Jags and Urban in year 1 didn't help. If Mahomes goes to the Raiders or Chicago, he's probably being discussed like Herbert or Dak. Is he good or does he suck?

Where you go, who coaches you, and who is running the franchise matters so much for a guy like JJ who needs more reps, needs to be developed, but may have the most upside of anyone in the draft. So I kind of hope he isn't a top 5 pick, so he goes somewhere that has a plan that will work, and a track record with their coaches developing guys. The Top 5 teams are not in that category, so I'd love to see him go to Denver, Seattle, LA Rams, or the Steelers in the top 20.

The point is that no one…

The point is that no one knew how to navigate NIL and Michigan was not interested in participating in NIL for the first couple of years. That was not Juwan's fault. He could have done as many alumni events as possible, that money wasn't going to go to the players in the form of NIL. Warde made that very clear. So while his efforts later on can be questioned, it's also on Michigan and the AD for not being prepared and not having a plan in place to help. Juwan made a lot of mistakes. He also took his first HC gig right before the most monumental changes (NIL and Transfers) hit the sport. And he was at a university that cringed at both of those concepts, compared to most programs. Some of it is Juwan's fault, some of it is Warde and AD's fault, some of it is the university leaderships fault, and some of it is awful timing and a screwed up CBB model.

Blame Pie. Everyone gets a piece.

I do wonder what the program looks like if JB was still the coach through the start of NIL. Or  if Juwan had been HC 5 years prior to NIL and had more of a chance to establish a program and get in with recruits.

Juwan also took the job…

Juwan also took the job right before NIL, and had to deal with a program that definitely didn't have the underground NIL already in place like some places, and was slow to move on it. That's a tough period in CBB history to be starting as a first time HC. While Juwan definitely made some huge mistakes, he had little room for error compared to JB ten years earlier.

But it's not as deep with proven, talented guys as it was last year. Cam Goode was a nobody 3 star who played a lot and was decent when he was in there. This could be something similar. Any average Big10 starter you can get for DL should be an immediate take, at face value.

This is more than just…

This is more than just public criticism. The states are suing the NCAA over this. And if the past court cases tell us anything, it's that the NCAA will be getting the backfire. This is just PR to let boosters know the school isn't going to put up with this while it works out in the courts. Too bad M doesn't have the chutzpah to do this.

The incident I was referring…

The incident I was referring to was the previous one at Tenn, which was under Pruitt. Tenn had already received "sanctions" but instead of the mandatory post-season ban, they paid a fine. They should have had a much worse punishment but the AG threatened a suit and the NCAA rolled over.

I would be bet my life the Athletic Director and the AG were in communication about this. So no, Warde isn't the AG. My point is, Warde and the university can do a lot of things, and leverage a lot of power, to fight both the NCAA and the Big 10. They chose not to. The NCAA COI threw out the offered settlement of a four game suspension in 2024, that tells you these weren't people acting in good faith, and any other big time program would have never let it get to that point over a lunch during COVID.  If they had, they sure as hell wouldn't have had the coach take a self-imposed three game suspension over it. To think there weren't ways to fight this, or have a Plan B, is foolish. There were options, Michigan chose not to pursue them. That's the fact. You can say you're okay with the University not doing anything and rolling over. Or you can say you're not okay with the University rolling over. But you can't say there weren't other options.

He's having subs and thinks…

He's having subs and thinks it's awesome. No way he comes back.

Well, Tennessee threatened…

Well, Tennessee's AG threatened to sue the NCAA and because of that, the COI immediately went against their own rules by deciding not to give Tenn a post-season ban. So yeah, Michigan could have done a lot of things that other programs do to the NCAA that have proven effective at keeping them at bay.

Look at Kansas and the FBI having proof of what they did. Nothing happened. So the endgame could have been stall, treat them like crap, threaten to sue, actually sue, and do anything you can to keep an over-bloated, ineffective bureaucracy from arbitrarily ruining a football program. It's what every other big-boy program does.

I think everyone knows this…

I think everyone knows this isn't entirely on Warde, and that Jim has some culpability. But Warde Manuel can be replaced in about 90 seconds. Jim Harbaugh can't. So Warde needs Jim more than Jim needs Warde, and that's on Warde to fix.

I don't think the article does a bad job of pointing out the facts, but acting like these are two sides with the same leverage is not true. This statement rings a little hollow for me:

"While other schools might pull the plug from fatigue if their coach flirted with the NFL every offseason looking for an upgrade, Manuel has remained patient because he knows he has a proven winner."

No other school would pull the plug on a coach with Jim previous three seasons. Not a single one. So Warde doesn't have a choice but to be patient with Jim.

Does correcting that make you the Czar of the Semantics Overlords?

The funny thing was I typed Michigan, then was editing before I posted and just put University in there at the end not thinking. And now I get all the downvotes. But I should have known better than to assume everyone would look for substance over pedantry.

I never really thought the…

I never really thought the binder would do much other than be a petty collection of grievances M has collected, with maybe a few juicy nuggets from past recruiting battles. But the way the media talked about it (or at least how it was portrayed on here and WTKA) was that they were going to start slinging mud everywhere if the Big 10 went forward with it.

Agree with everything you said. Just surprised that the binder, along with a bunch of other claims people in the media made, were all for not. I'm not surprised they rolled over, I'm more surprised they acted like they weren't going to, and either bungled that or never intended to. Either way it was just a weird look for the University and media side and I haven't seen much follow up since.

I didn't say the stories…

I didn't say the stories were false. I don't know what was true and what wasn't. My point was, that it seemed like no one in the media knew either, and yet it was reported constantly for weeks that M would come out swinging. Then they didn't, and there's been no follow up about anything since. I was just asking if anyone knew why that was, and if people think there is going to be more to come after the season. Or is the Michigan Media, and the University, hoping it all goes away because they all have some egg on their face.

This, and what happens…

This, and what happens between Petitti and UofM is what I'm curious about. Has the conference or Petitti met with the university to try an figure out a way forward or do we expect that to come in the off-season.

I'm sure by now most of the media is focused on the Rose Bowl but it felt like after the OSU game until now, there's been nothing.

Apologies to the Semantics…

Apologies to the Semantics Overlords of MGoBoard.

Agreed, there wasn't "no…

Agreed, there wasn't "no resistance" but after hearing about the sound and fury the administration was going to bring down on the conference and other members, we basically got a wet fart.

And since then there's been nothing about what happens next, and what happened during those weeks.

The NCAA cheeseburger thing is a separate deal altogether since it's already in process and the events happened in the past. Could be a bigger story if there's a show-cause, but it will play out.

And maybe that's the answer…

And maybe that's the answer. No one in the media knew anything, and everyone just reported rumors.

I do agree about the NCAA thing with Jim potentially leaving. Why fight it if he's gone. But I was referring more to the Big10 and a fight with them. I don't think M is leaving the conference over this, but there has to be some more to what's going on between M and the conference right now. Maybe it will all come out and no one wants the distraction, but it feels like everyone in the media is hoping no one brings up how wrong everyone was about this.

Again, I'm not online for…

Again, I'm not online for Michigan news besides this site, so I don't see it all. But Balas, Webb, Hole, and even Brian, all seemed to have bad info they were reporting. I know it's about clicks, but in a niche market like UofM athletics, I'd think the major outlets need to be more correct than this.

I get the evolution of a…

I get the evolution of a story like this, but there were a lot of long-time insiders who were adamant Michigan was going to fight this, and put evidence out to smear other schools. Maybe that all comes from their sources and everything changed overnight, and if that's the case, then the school clearly got out over their skis in what they were saying. But I haven't seen anyone from M media talk about that aspect or a timeline of what happened that caused so many of them to be wrong about a lot of it.
