2 years 5 weeks ago 5'9"?

LOL!

But seriously.  I would like to go down to the game tomorrow night!!  How much are tickets going for?

2 years 19 weeks ago None

He did recruit the players (almost all of which are less than 2 years from high school)

He did chose the offense.  It will work.  Great young talent.

He did chose the defense.  Shouldn't have.  Still lots of young talent.  Even younger than the offense.

He does own the results.  Getting better.  New it wouldn't happen overnight.  Most of his first group of guys have at least 2 years of eligibility left and are the best players on the team.

2 years 19 weeks ago Don't just look at 1 aspect

You cannot look at one aspect of anything and get a complete picture!

As far as the offense is concerned:

They are still quite young.  The only skill players on the roster that are in their 4th year removed from high school are: Junior Hemingway, Martell Webb, and Kelvin Grady (who played basketball for 2 years)!  Everyone else is either a true junior or younger.

They are much improved from 2009, and I don't want to think about the year before (after losing Long, Henne, Hart, Manningham, Arrington, etc.).  Yes, they did not put up a ton of points in the last 3 games.  However, you cannot simply look at points as the metric of an offenses effectiveness.  Nor, am I saying, that you could simply look at yardage...or any other single metric.  However, in a different situation, we could definitely have put up more points in the bowl game (or OSU or Wisconsin).  We missed a field goal from the red zone.  We got in to the red zone a couple other times...and being down had to go for big plays rather than running the offense, and eventually failed on 4th down.  I agree with you that the offense is not GREAT yet, but they are clearly on their way.

Help from special teams and defense would be obviously helpful!  Special teams is the easiest of the two to turn around.  Rich has received a committment from a well regarded kicker (let's not forget that Gibbons was well regarded as well).  Hagerup seems decent (save frustrating block) and was a true frosh.  The defense is bad.  Although I do see potential.  All the freshmen that we are playing is semi-encouraging...

also, in my epinion, I thought they played pretty well in many games this year, including the bowl.  You can yell at me all you want (52 POINTS OMG), but they really didn't play THAT terribly.  They simply need to make a couple plays on 3rd down (and when they do make that play, make another one on 4th).  With the exception of the 80some yard dump-off, I thought they played hard and decent.  I see potential...

Now, go look at the schedule next year...

2 years 19 weeks ago Agreed

I like Rich Rod a lot, and do think (given the opportunity) that he could definitely turn us into a national championship contender year in and year out.  However, there is simply no way that we can keep him now.  We have backed ourselves into a corner with holding out the decision until now.  I thought we should have come out and given him resounding support and assurance a month ago.  We didn't.

DB simply cannot bring him back without losing credibility, even if it would be the best decision.  If RR came back, it would be extremely tough sledding on the recruiting trail...and we could easily be in the same situation next year (even though I do see a SUCCESSFUL 2011 if RR was coach).

All in all, Rich did not get a fair shake.  He ran into a bad situation, without adequate support.  Unfortunately, he has to go.

2 years 20 weeks ago 2007

Those two years followed a SEVERELY dissappointing season (8-4) with guys like Mike Hart, Chad Henne, JAKE LONG, Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington, etc...

I feel like the transition was more difficult with Threet, Mathews, Ferrara, and an injured Molk...

2 years 20 weeks ago ahhh

I hope you are right, but it doesn't seem like a good way to rally the fanbase around the guy.  RR definitely deserves better than he has received in the last 3 years...

2 years 20 weeks ago Midwest

Are we really all that concerned with midwest recruiting?  There isn't traditionally a whole lot of talent (save Ohio) in the region, especially for a RR offense.  I would say he has done very well recruiting talent-rich areas like Florida...

2 years 22 weeks ago Right

Yes.  I am not saying that he isn't good by any means.  Quite the contrary.  He is about as perfect of a defensemen as humanly possible!  The guy has done everything asked of him for almost 20 years (after being a 3rd round draft pick!).  I was also not saying that he doesn't put up any numbers, I was just mentioning his goal totals are not CRAZY and it isn't all that surprising that he hasn't had a hat trick in his amazing career.  I was saying "scoring defenseman" as in goal-scoring.  You used "scoring defenseman" as in point-scoring.

If the wings needed him to score 30 goals a year (a.k.a. Mike Green) while reducing his role in the aspects I described above, then I have no doubt he could serve that role.  Especially in the late '90's.

2 years 22 weeks ago Double edit

Apparently I did read it correctly, and it was now edited?

2 years 22 weeks ago Big Chill

Big Chill hasn't made the list?

EDIT: Just read the post, not the Subject.  It does say "football" up there...but Big Chill could still be included "Big House"!

2 years 22 weeks ago Agreed

That was pretty sick, even though I thought he was going to be caught (not possible)!

Also liked 75 yards to Roundtree on opening play of the game...

2 years 22 weeks ago Can't help it

Cannot help but be optimistic for these guys.  I was expecting a miserable season coming into it, with no 4th year player on the team (and no center or true big).  They have been very impressive thus far, and I hope they continue to progress!

2 years 22 weeks ago Surprising

This one is surprising.  A guy with his talent, in his 9th year in the league and typically scores in the neighborhood of 30 goals a year would usually have a hat trick (in the regular season) under his belt.

2 years 22 weeks ago Nick

It isn't really all that surprising.  I mean the guy is a defenseman.  He has only scored 20 goals over an entire season once.  He has never been about gaudy statistics...he just does everything right.  I am sure if his team needed him to take on the role of a scoring defenseman, he could have done it.  However, the wings just need him to be a leader, puck mover, shut-down d' man, and power play quarterback.

2 years 26 weeks ago Denard vs. Pat White

REGULAR SEASON NUMBERS:

Denard through 10 (semi-injured) games in 2010:

1990 Pass Yds, 1417 Rush Yds (6.9/attempt), 26 total TD's

Pat White (college) career highs:

1842 Pass Yds (2008), 1335 Rush Yds (2007), 31 total TD's (2006)

Pat White (sophomore-senior) Season Averages:

12.33 GP, 1740 Pass Yds, 1176 Rush Yds, 29.3 total TD's

2 years 31 weeks ago House

That house is like 400 yards away!

2 years 32 weeks ago Notable Residents

Anyone else notice under the "Notable Residents" section that names like Martavious Odoms and Vincent Smith appeared, but not one Denard Robinson?

2 years 33 weeks ago No

At least not in the NFL.  It is a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (or at least was): See Joe Gibbs 2007.

Is it allowed in college?  I have never noticed it happen before.

2 years 33 weeks ago Thank You

Thank you for a helpful response!

Can you find anything on this?  The rule for the NFL or something that says there is one in the NFL, but not in the NCAA?

2 years 33 weeks ago NFL vs. NCAA

Is there a rule in the NFL then that is not in the NCAA?

I remember a few years back that Joe Gibbs got a bunch of flack for getting penalized after calling a second consecutive time-out and the Redskins lost the game.

I assumed a rule like that would be the same for NFL and NCAA?

2 years 37 weeks ago Problem

The problem with Maize Outs is that we do not have Maize Jerseys.  Many people that own a nice replica jersey wish to wear it to the games they go to.  However, most of these would be blue, and not contribute to a Maize Out.

2 years 37 weeks ago Intentional?

I don't know if you intentionally switched the names up or not?  But, Kelvin is the slot ninja (/cornerback [fingers crossed]), and Kevin has moved on...

2 years 37 weeks ago Rumors

There were rumors of him moving to cornerback, just a couple days ago?  I guess those were untrue...

2 years 37 weeks ago It would still be overall

It would still be overall conference record that would seed the teams in each division, not record just in games within the division.

Head-To-Head would be the first TIE-BREAKER

Michigan vs. OSU would still be extremely important if it was a cross-over game, but I am all for them being in the same division, playing once a year, on the last game of the regular season.  Most seasons, this should basically (hopefully, puts a lot on the game) be a play in to the Big 10 Championship game...

2 years 37 weeks ago Arby's

Why the hell would they put the Arby's logo right on the center of the front of the shirt?  It is such a nuisance there!

I can understand them wanting the logo on the shirt, but seriously, right there?

2 years 37 weeks ago Divisions

The major problem without divisions is tie-breakers.

With 12 teams in a conference, and 8 conference games (for now), that means that there are 3 teams each year that a certain team will not play, the teams will have to rotate on and off the schedule similar to the way they do now...but this means that each team is not playing a quarter of the conference.

Ties at the top of the conference at the end of the season will be a mess.  Nobody wants to be in or out of the Conference Championship game due to the number of penalty yards they obtained over the conference schedule (or some other dumb tie-break rule).  When the teams are split into divisions, then each team would play the other 5 in their division every year, and play 3 cross-over games that would rotate each year.

That way, if there is a tie at the top of a division, the only tie-breaker you need is head-to-head.  Then it is clear who goes to the championship game.

2 years 37 weeks ago Overrated?

If you think tradition is overrated, than you are a fan of the wrong team, in the wrong sport.  College football in general is packed with tradition, and the University of Michigan is the school most loaded in tradition!

Also, I think you are missing the main point of the argument.  It isn't that we wouldn't watch, because we most definitely would!  It is the fact that the heart would be ripped out because most of us would not BE THERE to watch it.  There would not be 100,000+ rabid fans packed into the Big House or that other stadium...with large/crazy student bodies, a neutral site game would not have the same atmosphere.

I really hope they keep Michigan and OSU in the same division.  They play once a year in late November...and the winner plays PSU/Wisc./Iowa/Nebraska in the Big 10 Championship.

2 years 38 weeks ago Who is your post directed towards?

Me?

2 years 38 weeks ago +1

To you, sir!  Got done reminiscing during my own post, and I read yours.  Great quote!  Very relevant and motivational...from a great source!

2 years 38 weeks ago For me...

Grew up a Michigan fan (especially Charles Woodson), I had a lot of family that went to the University...

As I got older, guys like Lloyd Carr, Jake Long, Mike Hart, Chad Henne, and Mario Manningham really started to make me love the program...

Decided on M as the right school for me, began to follow the program even closer...

First game as a student, ranked #5, all studs returning, National Championship hopes, HORROR!!!...

Really began following recruiting...

Happened upon mgoblog...

Obsession since...

so I wouldn't say it was necessarily the struggles of the last few years, that made me a bigger diehard.  I feel that it was my natural progression to eventually become fully captivated by Michigan Football, but who knows?

2 years 38 weeks ago Agreed

Let me start off by saying, I am not completely sure how the athletic divisions are set up (whether it is by enrollment, competitive advantage, combinations of factors, etc.), but I hate playing I-AA teams in general.

I do not wish to play any more of them, no matter how accomplished they may be.  If App St. moved up to I-A because they had been dominating I-AA for so long, there may be some merit in a revenge game to kick the living shit out of them...however, until that happens, STAY AWAY from I-AA!

2 years 38 weeks ago Classy Guy

I have a buddy that works for the Penn State football team.  He has met and talked with many of the Big Ten coaches.  He told me that Pat Fitzgerald was his hands-down favorite coach.  Said he was a very classy, enthusiastic, and genuine individual.

If your son cannot earn a high level athletic scholarship...I think a program headed by Pat Fitzgerald (coming with a very well respected degree from Northwestern) would be a great opportunity to help a lot in his development as a football player and a person.

2 years 38 weeks ago Elliott

It will be a great moment for the whole Mealer (and Michigan) Family.  I have watched the E60 segment on Elliott on several different occassions, and get emotional every single time.  I hope that kid earns some playing time this year.  The chills when Brock leads the team out of that tunnel...

2 years 38 weeks ago Preseason

I feel like the preseason would for sure have to be the busiest time of year for this blog.

I know I am not alone in checking the blog every 5-10 minutes around this time of year.  The anticipation of the upcoming season and the new developments in the recruiting cycle (visits, etc.) keep Michigan football on my mind 24/7.  Brian does a great job feeding my hunger for all things blue.

As for the slowest time of the year, I would probably say the couple weeks after everyone has read the bowl game recap (Hopefully we get back to the time when there is a bowl game recap) until the couple of weeks leading up to signing day.

Probably a little slow after signing day has come and gone also...

2 years 38 weeks ago Crazy Game

That game was CRAZY!

The first half, we played probably the worst half of Division I College Football that I had ever seen.  Fortunately, Wisconsin played the newest worst half of Division I College Football that I have ever seen.

I think the crowd helped close that game out as well (see: two point conversion and late offsides)

Notre Dame last year was awesome and loud!  Matthews touchdown!

Even Denard's first play in college, against WMU, had the crowd rocking!

2 years 38 weeks ago Excited

I am so excited for Brock to lead the 2010 Michigan team through that tunnel and onto the field!  This moment will mean much more than football!

Between this, the stadium re-dedication, and the revenge for the last couple years...the team and the 110,000 fans should be rocking all season with no excuse!

Right off the foot, you could track it directly to the back of her head...lol

2 years 38 weeks ago Redshirt

I would hope that they wouldn't burn his redshirt to have him play in a few "scrub-time" situations.  This obviously assumes that Tate and Denard don't get more than dinged up, and that neither struggles mightily.  Unless, Devin can give us a much improved chance of winning a game (which I do not think that he will this year vs. two quarterbacks with experience from last year), I hope they do not throw him out there.

2 years 38 weeks ago Interesting...

That Taylor Lewan singled out JT Floyd and the secondary as the better performers in practice...hopefully a sign of good things to come.  I am still confident about our team heading into the UCONN game.  Hope Christian, Rogers, etc. take the challenge and run with it!

2 years 38 weeks ago Still...

It's not like he was going to continue making less than a million dollars a season.  He was going to get paid.  I still think it is pretty selfish...especially to be the highest paid player in the league at the position.  I agree that he is probably in the top couple corners right now, but taking $15M a year on a decent team doesn't seem as good to me as taking $10M a year on a true Super Bowl contender.

2 years 38 weeks ago WOW

What was the original contract that the Jets were willing to offer?  I know he simply wanted to be the highest paid player at his position...I am just wondering how far the team had to come off their number to get this deal done.

Also, anybody have a clue on the incentives that need to be completed for him to get the other $80M

  Assuming games played/started, etc.?

2 years 38 weeks ago Well Done

Well done, sir.  I can appreciate that sarcastic back-handed comment!  I actually clicked the link to see why they wrote something about UM

2 years 38 weeks ago One of the all time greats

It was a pleasure to watch BG play for the maize 'n' blue as a student!  He is right at the top of my list of favorite Wolverine players (next to childhood hero Mr. Woodson and Mr. Hart)!  Here is to a long and successful NFL career!

3 years 5 weeks ago Why lose/lose?

I am all for scheduling tougher out of conference teams. I hate playing bottom level MAC teams and Division I-FCS powerhouses. The argument that we are too good of a program to schedule good teams OOC is ridiculous. I would obviously love to win a National Championship! However, I would struggle to say a Rose Bowl birth/victory is a failed season. So what if we drop a couple OOC games in the process (granted I will hate them at the time...), but these games mean nothing to the team's number one goal year in and year out, and that is a Big Ten Championship. We should definitely schedule nationally respected opponents. I am not saying bring in USC, Florida, Texas, and the like every season (once in a while would be great!), but why not a Boise St. or a mid-level SEC, Big XII, or Pac 10 team or two each year. There is something to be gained from playing quality competition, and I think Michigan should now more than ever, get down off its high horse, and schedule some meaningful OOC games.

3 years 7 weeks ago Hottest Goalie

The hottest goalie in the NHL right now would be Brian Elliott of the Ottawa Senators. His last four games he is 4-0 with 2 shutouts and a .983 saves%. He has cemented Ottawa into the playoff picture similarly to Howard for the Wings. Will not argue with Howard's 11-2-1 record since the break, or his performance in the shootout tonight. He seems to be developing into the franchise goalie they thought they drafted in 2003.

3 years 38 weeks ago Awesome!

I have been reading this blog for the last two years. This is the first time I have logged in to post. That's how much I liked this video. Very well done.
