One other thing working against Cabrera is the league leading number of double plays he's hit into. Cabrera is probably the most feared/respected hitter in baseball right now, but Trout is having a fantastic all around year.

it sucks that Ohio didn't get hit harder by the NCAA sanctions, but with that said, it's better for us and the big 10 to have Michigan and Ohio strong. Nothing better than beating a great Ohio team in the game. Having both teams strong and relevant nationally is needed to battle the SEC as a top footbaw conference.
And as somebody else stated above, he's flipping recruits from MSU and PSU. If he starts beating Hoke head to head for recruits consistently I'll worry, but it seems like Hoke and staff can handle their business very well so at this time, no concerns.

|3 years 40 weeks ago||We'll be a better offense and||
We'll be a better offense and team with Denard's carries going down from a sheer attempts standpoint. For lack of a better analogy I'll go with the quality over quantity meme. I'd like to see Denard refine his passing skills so that when he does carry the ball it's not solely the QB draw/dive over tackle that gets him beat up.
I'm not saying we don't run the pure QB draw any more, just saying if he's more of a passing threat the more he can exploit defenses when they drop back in coverage and he scrambles for HUGE yards.
Part of Denard being able to cut down on carries is improvement from the running game via the RB's. If Hoke's Offense can get a good down hill running game going the sky is the limit with Denard in the backfield. His personal #'s could decrease, but over all productivity of the offense would see huge gains from more balance.

Hoke needs to keep the pipelines open to TX and CA, however if he doesn't have in roads to FL he needs to get on it ASAP. There is just way to much talent down there to not recruit it.

I'd love to see at least one DT in this class. I'm not saying we don't need other positions shored up as well, but I was concerned about the lack of DT recruits under RR and I still am.
Regardless of coach or philosophy, the team that can dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball stands a better chance of winning, and I'm concerned about our D line depth over the next few years if we don't start landing some guys .

I wasn't trying to imply "rr recruited small players". I'm sure you heard Speilman's comments either in the game or rehashed here on the blog. He basically said nobody on our D would start on another Big 10 school - outside of Martin.
There was some additional comments, but the basic premise was that Michigan used to pump D talent into the NFL, and nobody currently playing on M's D was at that level.
Maybe some of the freshmen grow into that, maybe they don't, but our current talent/production was what he was speaking to, and that's what I was referencing in my post.

Based on the initial comments in this thread, I'm guessing this isn't a popular idea. I'm not sure why it would be totally shot down. Bama runs a "pro style" offense, and they had many offensive sets that utilized the pistol formation, with decent to great success.
I'm not sure it needs to be a base formation, but there's no reason not to use it as a change of pace.
Personally I'd like to see Pistol, shotgun, under center I formation, double tight end packages, etc... As long as execution is solid the more that we can throw at opposing defenses the better.

All of the "losses" that the OP notes are just standard turnover for those teams. They are all established programs at this point, especially OSU, so they simply reload. Michigan used to do this as well, going from the likes of Rob Renes, to Gabe Watson, to Alan Branch, and Lamar Woodley to Brandan Graham.
Now, we go from Brandon Graham to Greg Banks and Jibreel Black. Whether RR or Gerg stay long term, or a new regime comes in, the program has a long way to go to get back to solid footing.
Footnote - Jibreel may end up being a stud, but freshman Jibreel does not equal Jr. or Sr. B. Graham.

Only losers take offense to these type of comments. If IU didn't like getting rolled with 83 points, field a D and slow them down. But when you can't stop it, the team and the fan base should just accept it and try to learn from it, not whine and complain about it.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Yea, Denard is great and what||
Yea, Denard is great and what he's been able to accomplish in this offense is amazing. However he's still arm punting quite a bit even though that should improve.
The main problem with the team though is that there are 3 phases to a football team and Michigan is absolutely HORRIBLE in 2 of them. The D and Special Teams are plain bad. RR in his 3rd year should have a better handle on both and people still want to make excuses about attrition and bare cupboards. I'm not jumping up and down saying he needs to be fired, but I have serious doubts that he can turn this thing around and get the D going. Brandon is going to have to make a tough decision on whether or not RR can learn from his mistakes (and possibly part with some loyal D staff) to get this team back on track.

I love Shaw's blocking and straight line speed, but it seems he often dances behind the line too much if there isn't a huge hole available. In the Iowa game it seemed like RR got on him after a run like this when he kept moving laterally instead of taking the 1-2 yards available and living to fight on another down.
I'm really hoping to see more of Hopkins as well. If its the blocking assignments that are keeping him from getting more playing time, the bye week can maybe help address some of those issues. I like having a larger back to platoon in regularly to beat up the opposing teams front 7, especially since we've been dependent on longer scoring drives in Conference play (aside from the long Denard run against the Hoosiers).

I don't feel as though I'm ignoring the reality of the situation at all. I just refuse to think of it as an acceptable situation for Michigan football to be in.
There are a long list of excuses for this staff, but they've had 3 years and and we're still seeing the same product in conference play. I hope that they use the bye week and right the ship, but I have no reason to believe that this team is any different than last years based on what we've seen to date.
|4 years 6 days ago||all the players were admitted||
all the players were admitted to Michigan, so I'm guessing they don't have a learning disability. Which unfortunately means their coach is the one that's clueless...
|4 years 6 days ago||I'm stating that in 3 years||
I'm stating that in 3 years he hasn't fielded a competent team that plays sound fundamental football. I'm not inferring anything, proof is in front of a national tv audience on Saturdays in the fall.
|4 years 6 days ago||Some will take the positives||
Some will take the positives out of any loss. However, the things that beat this team today were TO's and penalties. Both are attributable to poor coaching.
Not to mention that half of our defense can't tackle without grabbing the opposing teams facemask. How many 3rd and 9+ will we give up this year? No improvement from last year, and anyone who says differently needs to remove the tinted glasses and look objectively at the product on the field.
|4 years 6 days ago||How many of those yards are||
How many of those yards are attributable to Iowa being content to work the clock? Regardless of your thoughts on that question, an L is an L, and this team looks the same as last years. Big games, big moments, against good teams, and they shit the bed...
I guess we'd be undefeated in the MAC or Big East, but there are good teams in the Big 11 and we don't measure up.

Decent Defenses are forcing Mich to work it down the field, and without the big play RR's offense seems to stall.
Not to mention the fact that he seems to constantly go away from things that work, like pulling hopkins for smith. Also on D, Demens was in for first 2 series, then in comes Obi getting pancaked in the hole by a pulling guard.
It's so frustrating watching Michigan football not even be competitive with the upper echelon of the Big 10 (which now includes Sparty).

Michigan is a poorly coached team. Nobody knows to cover a blocked FG? How many penalties? Also, apparently our coaches teach our players to tackle via grabbing the opposing teams facemask.
2010 is looking a lot like 2009. Bring on the Harbaugh rumors and another 3 year rebuilding effort.

If Michigan's D could understand how to defend a 3rd and 16 as comprehensively as I understand the points system, I'd feel better about today's matchup.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say neither...
Need to outscore everyone this year - that's the only way we're going to beat anyone.

Please - no 1-AA schools. We don't need that level of letdown after the team is jacked to play Bama (on national tv) then come home to a similar team as UMASS was this year.

I'm excited about adding Bama to the schedule, but 2012 is shaping up to be a BRUTAL schedule:
Hope Michigan can figure out how to play Defense by 2012 or it will be a painful season.

Is it really considered depth if they're all just mediocre? I'm saying mediocre because some players are just not great, others have high potential but need develop.
Hope I'm wrong in my assessment, but I'm thinking it's going to be another rough year.

It's great to hear he's taking accountability for the mistakes - he's just a sophomore QB and a bad game was due. A true leader backs up his words though, so we'll see how he handles things against Iowa. I'm expecting their D to pose more problems than MSU's, so he's going to have to be on top of his game.

Would be interesting to see if they could get a JUCO through the admissions office. Michigan hasn't been able to go the JUCO route very often.

A LB that Bama is recruiting? If he's good enough for Bama's D, he could probably start on ours right now.
In all seriousness though, RR needs to get in on more impact players on D, as has been rehashed here on the blog frequently.

I'll be worried the entire Big 10 schedule because our Defense is putrid. Gerg needs to perform magic to make me believe he's earning his paycheck. If we see progress from a tackling, gap responsibility, and coverage standpoint I can deal with the breakdowns. However, I've seen nothing to date that alleviates the puckering of my arse every time the other team has the ball....

Why would you want Michigan to get a good to great record beating up on the likes of Minnesota? I am hopeful they can make major strides this year and make a bowl, but in all seriousness if they don't start beating the likes of Wisconsin, Iowa, Sparty, and most importantly OSU, then who cares what the overall record is...???

Was that 2-way player Marecic? Great article on him in SI this week. Plays fullback and MLB for the Cardinal. Sounds like a guy that any program would be proud of having.

Not specific to this play, but I noticed in this game that WVU is using the huddle, as opposed to the RR no huddle spread. With the tools at his disposal (Noel Devine, etc...) why change Offensive philosophy?
