the three years before covid…

the three years before covid were 8-5, 10-3, 9-4. add in the covid year and you can snapshot four years and point to a clearly “emerging trend.” snapshotting two years is a very low sample size for me to make a confident decision about a coach, especially when he has two previous trips to the sweet sixteen and elite eight immediately before that.

Beilein’s first four years…

Beilein’s first four years were just as bumpy with much lower peaks (a second round loss to blake griffin and oklahoma).

Basketball teams turn over a…

Basketball teams turn over a lot quicker than football teams. It’s not like Howard’s elite eight run that was a shot away from a final four was Beilein’s team or anything. If there were no off court issues involved, i’d say give another year, Harbaugh went 2-4 in 2020 and look at football now.

My question - what NCAA rule…

My question - what NCAA rule / guideline that was associated with Advanced Scouting was broken?

I can’t believe we’re still doing this. The guy was an active analyst dressed up in a disguise on the opponent sideline of future opponent. There’s no fake news witch hunt here, it’s overblown, but there were very clearly rules violated.

He has an NOA for a level I…

He has an NOA for a level I investigation with a 4+ game suspension outstanding and very clearly another one pending. I think there’s a good chance the NCAA backs down but there’s no reasonable view that looks at the NCAA and calls a year+ suspension an “extreme long shot.”

there’s no point in signing…

there’s no point in signing a deal when the other party requires a “get out of deal free” clause for the next month.

is this a negotiation? i’m…

is this a negotiation? i’m sure a bunch of people were asking the regents what they were doing. it’s not like he’s tweeting “i’ll only sign harbaugh if agrees to let us fire him if he gets a show cause.” he’s just issuing a statement that he does not plan to comment at all on the contract. pretty standard.

honestly, the more absurd…

honestly, the more absurd request i thought was basically asking for the contract to have a “get out of contract free” clause for another month. that defeats the entire purpose of the renewal. it’s not like michigan is trying to sign him, he’s already under contract. if michigan were to give him an extension, they would want something in return, namely that he would not immediately go and sign somewhere else. michigan has absolutely zero reason now to sign anything with that provision in it, because he can just leave anyways. so just wait until that date.

Harbaugh is looking for…

Harbaugh is looking for Michigan to have some skin in the game on these bullshit violations.  Michigan can address this easily by defining cause very narrowly and then create a specific buyout if NCAA ban's Harbaugh for more than a season-  for instance, this scenario could trigger a specific buyout of 2 or 3 years salary.

Are you at all sure the university hasn’t tried this and Jim just said no?

It’s abundantly clear that…

It’s abundantly clear that Michigan is at the most plan B for harbaugh right now, and there’s openly articles each day about interviews he’s taking. Given this, if Harbaugh truly cares about the program, can he reasonably expect Michigan to just sit around dick in hand and not have a contingency plan?

Stallions was literally on…

Stallions was literally on camera in disguise on the opponent sideline of a future conference opponent just months before the game while employed by UM. I would be very surprised if anyone with a modicum of responsibility knew about this, but if they did, it would certainly be fireable.

I love harbaugh but risking…

I love harbaugh but risking 9 digits guaranteed on the whims of the NCAA could very reasonably be a nonstarter to the university. I don’t know that I see this as reasonable.

I hate to break it to you,…

I hate to break it to you, but stallions was on TV in disguise on the opponent sideline of a future michigan opponent. There’s no reasonable view out there that somehow will manage to tell you “this is a giant witch hunt and no one did anything wrong.” Stallions broke a rule, and will not be back in the NCAA anytime in the near future.

The important thing is putting it in context - universities break rules all the time. They’re assessed based on impact and punished accordingly.

disagree. especially with…

disagree. especially with the “far more likely.” rich rod started 3-9, 5-7. no program is immortal, but unless a meteor strikes tuscaloosa, it’s hard to see that as a possibility any time soon.

i feel like the most likely outcome here is a sec-version of ryan day. keep the elite recruiting and performance, but a regression to average in big program wins. he’s gonna be feeling heat if he can’t win a title in the first three years though.

disappointing lack of strip…

warning sign for me on these…

warning sign for me on these are that everyone i’ve talked to seems to be assuming they’ll drop. if everyone is waiting for a drop, the actual market behavior is likely to be opposite. that being said, the amount available is probably a good proxy, the moment that starts to drop even a little is probably the time to buy. hard to see these dropping more than a couple hundred bucks from where they are now anyways.

posted this below too but…

posted this below too but there are a bunch of people waiting on the allotment to see if they’ll get tickets who aren’t buying right now. if they end up not getting tickets, they’ll all rush to the secondary market to buy, which might actually shoot the prices up if there isn’t also a big chunk of people that get the tickets just to sell them.

one thing to note about…

one thing to note about ticket allotment - a lot of people are pointing to the release of the school tickets as a point where tickets will drop. devils advocate - there are a lot of fans who want to go that are waiting on the ticket drop to see if they get tickets. when tickets are released, all that don’t qualify will be rushing to the market to buy secondary tickets. if there are a bunch more people that run to the market to buy than claim tickets just to sell (which wouldn’t be surprising), you could actually see a big jump in get in price.

I did this for the rose bowl…

I did this for the rose bowl and the best answer is just to pick the big sites and look at all. Every site now gives you an option to view the price after fees by checking a box, so it’s really not very time consuming to compare. one site i found that surprisingly was cheaper than others for the rose bowl was looking at ticketmaster’s verified resale section. but at the end of the day, i would just switch between ticketmaster, stubhub, gametime, vivid seats, and ticketiq (an mgoblog sponsor). at the point, just pick what’s cheapest, there’s zero benefit really to having loyalty to any specific site.

the step down was definitely…

the step down was definitely fake, but plenty of real smoke from program insiders suggesting something happened. if it happened, fire juwan immediately, and if it happened before this game, fire warde into the sun for not doing anything. guy is fully useless at this point.

We need to take care of… We need to take care of business against Iowa. I don’t doubt a loss against iowa would get us jumped by an undefeated FSU CC, Pac-12 CC, SEC CC, and Texas if they win, which would leave us at 5. We will though.
Louisville is garbage. FSU…

Louisville is garbage. FSU is already favored by 5.5. I don’t think they’re a lock, but no way do i think there’s even a good chance they lose.

yeah i don’t think…

yeah i don’t think louisville losing meant a damn thing. no way they were putting in a 1 loss louisville over literally any other one loss team, let alone an sec team. but yes, if fsu loses, either uga or bama (or maybe both) will deservedly be in.

I would imagine this is the…

I would imagine this is the playoff committee’s nightmare scenario. For the sake of discussion, if it was oregon that won the pac 12, i could see the playoff committee jumping bama over oregon (both 1-loss conf. champs). I could also see them jumping bama over texas and saying that head to head is not the end all tiebreaker. But i agree that no matter what the playoff committee decides, there’s going to be a very angry 5th team with a very good case.

more interesting scenario is…

more interesting scenario is with a texas loss. ohio state is not in a good place, but they’re going to have an argument if it comes down to them v a 1 loss washington or them v a 1 loss acc champ fsu. i actually think they would almost certainly be 4 if michigan uga UW win, fsu loses out, and texas loses to ok st. a texas win next week and osu is dead. but a loss and they’ve got hope like it or not.

I’m sure CMU effectively…

I’m sure CMU effectively knows it’s stallions but his name isn’t registered, and he’s not talking to CMU, so unless CMU finds someone on their staff who confirms to them they gave the pass to him, there’s 0 chance they positively identify someone without 100% proof.

That guy’s “sources” was… That guy’s “sources” was just some guy quoting the big ten rulebook. Notably absent were any “sources” on what anybody at the Big Ten who has a modicum of influence thinks. Writers have just honed their game to get the most clicks out of nothing.

unless she’s a virtual nurse, I’m gonna guess the nurse part is about the highest risk factor you could imagine for coming into contact with covid

that’s not believed, it just…

that’s not believed, it just hasn’t been proven definitely that you don’t. Big difference. The lack of testing of something does not imply the opposite is true.

Over 100 million vaccine…

Over 100 million vaccine doses have been given out, and the act of traveling (whether by car or plane - plane a little worse than car obviously) hasn’t shown to be a significant covid spreader. Most of the extremely high risk population has been vaccinated. Plus anyone who got covid in the last few months has natural immunity, and now you’re looking at a significant chunk of the population. Not much of a difference in “selfishness” if you’re socially distancing in Nevada or California or Michigan.

The science guys tracking this virus and examining the makeup of the samples of infected Americans currently have us at 2-3% of the population infected or recovered, even after accounting for the significant undertesting. We still have much longer to go unfortunately.

While Washington did…

While Washington did eventually get charged with a crime, that was not until significantly after the ESPN article. The fact that in this case, the person question eventually went on to get charged and plead to a reduced crime doesn’t really make it better for me. This kid was barely even qualified as a public figure, he was an unknown walk-on. It left a weird taste in my mouth when a site as big and supposably reputable as ESPN is releasing unredacted names of uncharged walk-ons. Any time articles like these appear, nearly all news stations keep names quiet until charges. Sure, they leak on internet message boards and the like, but should ESPN really be held to the same standards of reporting as an internet message board? What happens when they do this to someone who never gets charged? You get your name plastered on google searches in an ESPN article that of course won’t get deleted, even if they were wrong.

This is the same “journalist…

This is the same “journalist” who outed a student (specifically named in a report) who was never even charged with a crime, and spent multiple articles worth of real estate shitposting vague “previously unreleased information” that had already been reported on by quality local news sources like the lansing state journal and, surprise, ended up leading to nothing.

A 3000 word article in which only a small fraction is spent talking about the actual headline, which uses the implication of witness tampering to what was even mentioned in the MSUPD report as Izzo just checking on Smith, almost a godson to him, to make sure he was okay and that he needed to cooperate with any investigation, and that sentiment is according the Smith, the witness in question, isn’t exactly striking me as a bastion of journalistic integrity.

Izzo likely broke a rule here, but you can report on it without the misleading clickbait titles suggesting things that are pretty clearly not there. They know the only thing most people read is the headline anyways.

It pains me having to do something even close to “defending” izzo, but this is stuff that ESPN has proven we need to stick to local news sources for. I’ll look again when the LSJ says something.

Not sure what the skepticism…

Not sure what the skepticism is about, I think the post was pretty reasonable. We're the 11th best Kenpom team when we've had Livers, elite 8 is plenty a reasonable goal if the team stays healthy.

Beilein has never had a non…

Beilein has never had a non-head position in his life, I'd say there's a better chance he's sticks with the cavs next year than that happening (and that's about 0%).

Yep, I'm with you here…

Yep, I'm with you here. Definitely sucked to see him leave but at the moment, I'm ready to move on with Howard.

I know I'm on a college…

I know I'm on a college-centric site, but for a general basketball fan, I didn't think it was really all that bizarre. The NBA is just a different level than college, and it doesn't surprise me someone would want to test the NBA stage given the opportunity. Shame it didn't work out though.

I doubt this dude actually…

I doubt this dude actually has a source, but to play contrarian, if his source is from the Howard camp and has confirmed Howard doesn’t want yaklich back/is firing him, then amy yaklich wouldn’t really have any say in that. This dudes a hack tho.

I mean, this isn't making…

I mean, this isn't making bowls more meaningful, it's just increasing the size of the playoff. Currently, playoff games are very meaningful, and non-playoff bowl games aren't. Increasing the size of the playoff will just mean more meaningful playoff games, and actually make non-playoff bowl games even less meaningful, since it'll be easier to make the playoffs and more teams will make it. I think we should stop pretending playoff games are bowl games, because no one sees them as such, you can call it whatever you want, but alabama oklahoma was a playoff semifinal, not the orange bowl.
