Adrian Martinez for K-State…

Adrian Martinez for K-State now.

Seems like was at Nebraska forever for some reason.

Just an aside, anyone know…

Just an aside, anyone know why MSU was able to kick with a tee after their safety? The ball even rolled off twice, I thought refs would notice, but apparently not.

I wouldn't say that they had

I wouldn't say that they had no effect. Bad reffing or not, I felt like our guys all of a sudden were afraid of playing defense, blocking out, etc. because everything was being called a foul. Villanova got a ton of offensive rebounds that I don't think they would have if the team could have played normal defense.

There were a ton of calls against Villanova on the same end in the second half. I think maybe that one of the refs was more call happy. I was kind of hoping that we would just drive it and try to draw as many fouls as possible in the second half; would have been great if we could get them on their only hot handed player, but oh well.

I forgot about Tate Schanski!

I forgot about Tate Schanski! His mom was a teacher at my school in elementary and I always thought it was super cool to know the mom of a Michigan football player. #Nerdy3rdGraderLife

I'm having flashbacks of

I'm having flashbacks of Navarre getting sacked about 9 times during the Rose Bowl. Oh, the horror.

Did anyone notice the weird chain measurement?

It happened about 3-4 mins to go before the end of the 3rd. They measured from the middle of the sticks, so about 5 yards was taught. Is this allowed?

Ignoring the blatant racism in the Wilbon Article...

ESPN is bad at stats.

Remember this?

A few things:

How would the new fumble rule affect things like high snaps, pitches, and more? And the bit about tackling, it would be interseting to note how many tackles would be voided in a few case studies of games to see if this is truly viable.

Secondly, I've heard getting rid of hardshell helmets, but I would rather see a soft/hard/soft helmet design. If I understand correctly the hard layer allows force to be distributed to a larger area, more evenly, yet, because it allows elastic collisions is a problem itself.

Slightly similar...

Slight segue while we're on this topic. Did anyone see the targeting call in the game day game last week? Basically a player made a tackle and the hit itself caused a helmet to helmet contact. Upon review it was deemed targeting even though it seemed really benign.

However the thing was that ESPN's rules expert claimed they could only review whether there was helmet to helmet contact (even though I swear I have seen instances where this is not the case). This seems like the reason why Bolden's targeting was not overturned.

This, x10000.

This, x10000.

Whew.

Whew.

Fluky crap for huge yards.

Fluky crap for huge yards. You would think that overall it won't hold up. Anyways watching Countess make plays for Auburn earlier really makes me miss him.

Like last week when it

Like last week when it tropical stormed for exaclty 4 plays of Nebraska's possession.

And we can't get a ball to stop bouncing into the opponents hands.

Looked to me like we jumped

Looked to me like we jumped and came back, but they flinched, and then we came across the line again. I think that was the right call.

I am agreeing with MaizeHaze

I am agreeing with MaizeHaze on this one. Anything can happen in rivalry games. They are going to come to Ann Arbor amped up and prepared. This MSU team might not be a #2, but they may be a pretty good team anyway.

For what it's worth Oregon had their top QB against MSU, something Utah didn't have to deal with much. They looked like they had some tough spots against lesser opponents but there are a few more things to consider. Some good defensive turnovers have shortened their fields, so overall yards is a little skewed. The play style doesn't exactly yield high output either, despite what they may have done last year.

And I look back to last year and see comparisons. Don't count on early struggles to mean much. Last year I thought they "struggled" with some teams early, despite the score line. Wyoming gashed them for several 40+ yard plays before eventually flopping in a scoreless second half. Despite a 56-14 Sparty win, giving up huge plays like that against a team that would go 4-8 isn't particularly convincing. But they ended the year well and looked pretty dominant after their few opening games. We can always win, but it is not going to be easy at all.

Mine shifts from year to year

Mine shifts from year to year but now, 40% reserved for the SEC. Why? I am not fully sure. Maybe for their propensity to recruit seemingly Aaron Hernandez types and for their "national recognition." Some I think is deserved, other times it's b.s.

1% Arkansas Punt Returner Reggie Fish. Sad that one person draws specific ire, but one damn muffed punt may be the catalyst for SEC mania/Tim Tebow mania and a Michigan National Championship bid.

30% OSU. Because: duh.

1% Oklahoma. Way to have the most boring fight song in college football.

10% Notre Dame. Speaking of fight songs, sing The Victors over theirs and see if it sounds good/similar. Yes, their fight song came second.

18% Michigan State. So smug lately. And I hate when I hear about Dantonio's "discipline" and zero tolerance policy. But to him, "zero tolerance does not mean automatic dismissal." Which he obviously wholeheartedly believes after all we saw with Chris Rucker, Glenn Winston, Max Bullough, Brian Linthicum, etc. Insert Princess Bride quote here.

I think Hawthorne looks solid

Posted this in the other spring game forum, but I think Hawthorne looked good there near the end. Big hit, one handed interception, goaline tackle. Looked solid even with one arm wrapped up. RBs look good. Wile made a medium length field goal, but what can you really say with so few attempts?

I thought our front 7 on D didn't play so well early on, but it got a little better as the game progressed. We need better snap exchanges; two on the ground today is bad. We didn't get to see much of the WRs. Gibbons push that one field goal wide, again just one play, doesn't mean this is necessarily a problem.

I agree,

Burlon has been solid, even in previous years.

Wait...

What is this talk about Scooter flirting with being on the second line? Haven't the first two lines been typically something like this--

Rust, Hagelin, Lynch

Louie, Wohlberg, Brown?

And I agree Glendenning isn't super amazing, but he's pretty good for what he is. He doesn't make mistakes, he skates hard, etc. Isn't that basically what we want in a 3rd liner?

Secondly our defense is disappointing. Red hasn't riden one goalie like he normally does. Hunwick at his best is pretty good and Hunwick performed well when we needed him to last year. However we need to focus on Hogan. Goalie is a position where the player needs to be consistent rather than amazing in short periods. There was a reason Hogan was our starting goalie, and why he had so many consecutive starts. Secondly the graduation of Kampfer and Summers was tough, and our defense is really thin. I would consider easily Burlon and Patteryn as our best defensive defensemen. Langlais is decent offensively, and his skillset is there, he just makes so many mistakes. Moffie is like Langlais without the upside. Llewellyn is okay.

Thank God the Big Ten didn't...

Thank God the Big Ten didn't push for 9 conference games in 2012 as well. This is looks to be one of the toughest schedules already.
