Actually I strongly support free speech no mater whether I agree with it or not. Whether that be from the far left or the far right, it is the basis for a healthy democracy. Unfortunately it's become very extreme on both sides, I really wish we as a nation could tone down the rhetoric, compromise and get things done. There is a line though, condoning violence, that both sides should not encroach upon.
True, but in all honesty, I feel a bit mislead by the article. I feel they should have more prominently posted President Ono's original e-mail, not buried it under "condemned".
I abstain from almost all social media, as a matter of mental health preservation. In this case, it was less about feeling the need to be the first to react angrily and more from a deep conviction of the importance of the right to free speech and the right to protest.
Shame on me for not realizing the level that passes for "journalism" today.
I guess I had a hair-trigger response to what I felt was yet another assault on Democracy in this country and a tarnishing of the university I love.
Thank you for the e-mail link Indy-Pete, as that certainly changes the narrative. That as written, seems level headed and an appropriate response. LOL, now I have to consider sending a 2nd e-mail to President Ono acknowledging my first one was sent with incomplete information.
Oh, I agree. But if you read the link it is almost a blanket ban on protesting. Regardless of place and/or time. That, I hope most will agree, is a very dangerous slippery slope.
I so far have been a BIG supporter of you and your leadership, but I feel you have TOTALLY missed the boat with your recent e-mail restricting protester's rights.
The University of Michigan has always been known for its Student Activism and support of Free Speech (no mater how unpleasant), it is one of the things that makes it the greatest university in the world.
In my days on campus, I protested with chants of "No Cops, No Guns, No Code" and occupied the Administrative Building. Standing up for what I believed in and taking a stand is one of the most important things I learned during my time here.
While I agree that protests are disruptive (almost by definition), and in some cases crosses the line, I would MUCH rather error on the side of protecting free speech.... the bed rock of Democracy and higher learning.
I am sending you this e-mail to officially voice my concerns and dissatisfaction with a VERY broad and VERY punitive (including expulsion and firing) policy set forth without ANY input from staff or students. If your policy was in place while I was a student, I would have been at risk of expulsion.
This is NOT what the world leading University of Michigan stands for but rather the exact opposite. I implore you to reconsider your stance regarding this fundamental issue.
There is not a more perfect person to lead Michigan football right now and to continue advocating for what you feel is right. While I CERTAINLY will respect your desire to scratch that Super Bowel itch if you leave, I feel there is SO MUCH good you can offer to the young men coming through our program. There is not a more important legacy you could ask for, then to turn out a generation of Michigan Men. America would be better for it.

Dear President Ono,
It seems that the article I read, prompting my response below, was not entirely accurate and at the very least incomplete.
https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/06/university-michigan-restrict-campus-protests
While they linked your e-mail under "condemned", it was not apparent at all that this was an original e-mail by you.
If not for a fellow eagle-eyed MgoBlog poster, I would have missed it.
Upon reading your original e-mail
https://president.umich.edu/news-communications/messages-to-the-community/statement-on-disruptions-to-university-events-and-operations/
I find it level headed and an appropriate response.
Please forgive my quick-to-react first e-mail.
However, my passion for protecting free speech and the right to protest stands.

I have not seen any e-mails, but from what I gather that second e-mail was only in response to the blow-back he got from the first one.

That added content is their rationale supporting it, not the news itself mate.
