Christianity is built on God…

Christianity is built on God's forgiveness of us.  And yes, as a Christian I am called to forgive others.  However, forgiveness does not mean you have to give someone a second chance.  For example if someone commits fraud in my business, I can personally forgive them, but that does not mean I am going to bring them back into my finance department.  Liberty clearly believes he deserves that second chance, but it looks really bad from an outsiders perspective.

This is appalling.  A school…

This is appalling.  A school that holds itself up as a Christian institution is hiring a man who knew of and covered up countless sexual assaults at a prior institution that also claims to be Christian.  Apparently winning and the almighty dollar are worth destroying the lives of a few women on campus.

I played college soccer so…

I played college soccer so not quite the same as football, but it will still give a general picture.

Schedule - We were supposed to have breakfast every morning in the dining commons, but that was not strictly enforced.  Otherwise it was class all day.  Between classes you would go to the training room, have meetings with coaches, watch film, etc...  All these things were on an as needed basis throughout the season/off-season.  Practice was from 4-? every day.  Length of practices varied based on how much film, position specific work, etc...  We had mandatory library study tables first semester freshman year.  If you were solid academically you were done after first semester.  If not, you had those your whole career.  Coaches would keep up on players who struggled academically by tracking their homework and class attendance.  After practice it was homework/video game/girlfriend time.  Bed time was midnight for everyone, but that was only enforced on nights before games.  Weekday games you went to class until you had to leave for the game.  At that point the rest of the day was about the game.  Saturday's were always game days so it was up early and full day focused on soccer.

Mental State - I had a few major injuries in my career and just like everyone else, you just kept playing.  Trainer says you need 6 weeks, you are back out there in 1.  It was not the coaches pushing us either.  Each player had that drive that they wanted to compete.  Also, most of us (including me) knew we had no chance to play professionally so we had a short 4-5 year window then our soccer careers were done.  We did not want to spend any of that time sitting out from injury.  We discussed whether we would live longer or shorter lives because we played college soccer.  We determined that we would live longer from the fitness benefits but have lower quality of lives due to the injuries sustained.

Goals - there were a few guys who were out for themselves.  They did not last long in our program as we were an average talent team who won based on teamwork and working harder than other teams.  Guys out for themselves did not fit in well with that dynamic.  We had individual goals like score x number of goals or have y number of shutouts, but we were much more focused on team goals like staying ranked, winning the conference, making nationals, etc...  Individually we had to focus on academics and life after soccer as most of us were not going pro.

Rivals - our main rival College A was 20 minutes away.  We would scrimmage them in the winter and spring.  A bunch of us went to the same church.  So we were very familiar with them.  During the game we wanted to win like when you are playing against a friend and you desperately want to beat them.  It was not a deep hatred like I have as a fan toward Ohio State.  However, College B knocked us out of our conference tournament my last 3 years.  I hated and still do hate them with a deep burning passion.  It wasn't just that they beat us.  They were absolute tools as people.  College A was good guys.  College B was...not.  So for me the hatred was developed through personal experience.  I had no feelings toward these rivals when I got to college because I had no background with them.  As a fan, I have had years to develop hatred for Ohio State.

Hopefully that provides some insight even though it is not the same as a Michigan football player.

Thanks.  I would love to…

Thanks.  I would love to take my Dad to the game.

The Eagles Nest

If you have a day to drive somewhere, I would suggest The Eagles Nest.  It is a two hour drive from Munich and offers spectacular views of the Alps.  There is also a museum there (Eagles Nest was Hitler's southern headquarters) which is informative but not as overwhelming as visiting a concentration camp.  Salzburg is also close and is an excellent city to visit for a day.

As mentioned earlier, Neuschwanstein is also spectacular and is 2 hours in the other direction.

Accountants can be athletes too

Hey, us accountants can be athletes too.  But definitely not prosecutors.

Play Calling

The play calling at the end of the game was atrocious.  The use of J'marick Woods for Metullus at various times was also questionable.  Two big plays were at least partially on him.  Otherwise, can you really blame the coaches for five turnovers and two of those inside the five?  Adjustments certainly need to be made, but I don't think a whole sale change is necessary.

Harbaugh's offense requires solid QB play.  Without it, the offense does not work.  If we cannot find a QB next year, it doesn't matter what coaching changes are made.

Roos

I am hoping Roos can make a contribution this year.  He had a great freshman year at CC playing mostly on the first line.  He then disappeared for his final years.  Hopefully Roos' talent just got lost in the tire fire that has been CC hockey since Scott Owens left.

Roos

I was a season ticket holder at CC when I live in Colorado.  My last year out there was Alex's freshman year.  He had a ton of potential splitting time between CC's first and second lines.  He socred some pretty impressive goals including an OT winner in the conference tourney against UND and a late game winner against rival DU.  CC switched coaches between his freshman and sophomore years so maybe that played a role in his reduced stats/playing time.  Hopefully some of that potential is still in there and can be drawn out by Mel.

There is one way for Michigan

There is one way for Michigan to look good in this situation.  The President should make a statement that student safety is the university's number 1 prioritiy and due to putting a student at risk, Hoke is fired.  Due to Brandon not taking care of this matter within his own department, he is fired.  Michigan takes a hard stance on student safety and looks good.  Also, Hoke and Brandon are gone and the fan/donor base is satisfied.  Seems like a win win to me.

Nussmeier Saw It

1.  After Morris almost collapsed, Nussmeier was 10 yards on the field yelling at Morris to go down.  Morris didn't because he obviously wants to keep playing, not his fault at all.  Nussmeier then left Morris in the game.  Did anyone see what Nussmeier did next?  Did he go and tell Hoke to get Morris out or call a timeout so he could be evaluated?  If Nussmeier did nothing after obviously seeing the whole thing, he is just as liable as Hoke and should also be fired.

2.  If Hoke didn't see it as he says he didn't, someone on the sidelines should have told him to get Morris out or call a timeout.  If no one did this or if someone did and Hoke did nothing, it shows the dictatorship that Hoke is running.  What he says goes, period.  No matter what else someone tells him.  That is not a remotely healthy way to run a program.

3.  There is one way Hoke should not be fired and that is if in the next press conference he says he made a mistake and apologizes for it.  Anything else, and he should be fired.

4.  Brandon should already be fired due to the athletic departments offical press release which was a straight up lie.

Saw DU a few times this year

As a Colorado College season ticket holder, I watched DU in person twice this year, and also viewed them numerous times on TV throughout the year.  Here are a few things I noticed.

  1. Dirty – DU is a very dirty team.  They frequently hit after the whistle and throw cheap shots throughout the game.  Against CC especially, they made a concerted effort to hit the goalie during play or after the whistle any time they were close to him.  The dirty play was amplified against CC as they are rivals, but even against Minnesota, they were very dirty.
  2. Goalie platoon – Brittain has been excellent in the two games I have seen him play.  Olkinuora has been streaky.  I have seen him play really well in one game and then give up a couple real easy goals in the next.  The past couple weeks the two goalies have been switching every other game.   If the pattern continues, Brittain is Ferris, and Olkinuora is Michigan.
  3. Offense – the majority of the offense develops around the Shore brothers and Zucker (all graduates of Pioneer, fyi).  All three are very quick with great vision and puck handling abilities.  As a team, they crash the net hard after shots and (as mentioned earlier) are not afraid to take out the goalie in the process.
Saw Cornell twice this year

I am a Michigan transplant in Colorado Springs and a Colorado College season ticket holder.  I saw Cornell play CC twice this year.  Here is what I noticed.

1. Size.  Cornell was noticeably bigger than CC. Not just height, but wide bodies.  They were not very fast but were excellent at using their strength to knock CC off the puck.

2. Fitness.  Granted, the games were in the altitude, but CC skated circles around Cornell the third period of both games.  The fast play (and altitude) wore down Cornell, and allowing CC to dominate late in the games.  (This was in January, so their fitness could have changed by this point in the season)

3. Goalie.  Iles played out of his mind.  CC looked like the better team in both games, but Iles was spectacular, especially late in the games when Cornell was sucking wind.  He is the major reason they got any points that weekend.
