This is what I have for this week - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeNBJ5o-b7s
|3 days 10 hours ago||I was wrong||
and it sucks. I deeply love Michigan Football. I thought they would go 10-2 this year.
some fun facts - I actually worked with a member of staff during the 2010-2013 seasons. I was there for every practice in 2010. I actually couldn't tell you anything based on practices on a week to week basis and I watch a decent amount of football every week on TV. After that, I only helped out on home gamedays only. I never attended any team/position meetings but inside Schembechler was rather mundane - it truly is just the coaches in the office most of the time. I did posit some high level analysis at one point but it was never pushed up - 'they won't read it'. The GA's are mostly doing the gruntwork on combing over scouting reports/formations/etc - this then gets passed along to the coaches. The coaches do a brief amount of scouting on their own as well, together as a group. I think the GA's read MGoBlog.
It was kinda neat being on the inside but I mostly kept to myself - I'm a pretty nerdy guy and didn't want to look out of place more than what I already was.

I see players laughing and conversing after the game. I don't get it.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||You have to look at longer||
You have to look at longer arcs of time. Notre Dame finally has stability after 20 years. Will it take that long? Who knows. But we have the one thing that can at least buy you time while you go through 5 or 6 hands over a decade or two - proud alumni with a shitload of money. Ross may be rich, but he can't subsidize 40-50K empty seats a week.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||this||
|3 weeks 2 days ago||we have different timelines||
we have different timelines then as to when we think Hoke will be let go.
we're not the ones making the decision, Brandon is. Brandon will delay until he can't. I think the rationale that Brandon will give to the regents/president will be - look, I want Hoke gone too, but I've conferred with this search firm and even they say that options we have a replacement aren't very good...Oh and I've raised a ton of money for you guys, I want this to get better but we have to stay the course because if we get this wrong, we're just going to be doing this again in 3 or 4 years, just like the span from 2007 to 2010.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||1) the pool is bad, this is||
1) the pool is bad, this is not in dispute
2) non-zero probability that the pool will be better next year
3) allows them to delay an embarassing decision
this isn't a belief, it's an observation. You're right, there is a greater probability that the coaches available next year won't meet that slam dunk hire criteria either. But for the reasons stated above, this is why the AD will decide to not fire him, unless the sub-80K attendance thing happens.
I hope I'm wrong too, but unfortunately this plays out the way I described above.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||simple||
I don't know if it's going to be deeper next year but in the absence of a solid option, they'll keep him. We have a for sure thing today (bad pool) to delay in the hope of a better pool tomorrow and it spares us the embarrassment (_their_ embarassment, the AD. The AD doesn't care how you feel, unless it impacts the money) of the firing a coach for another day. This kind of how, you know, our government works as well. Not saying this is how things _should_ be done, it's just how things are.
The AD will wait until the very last moment or if it's a complete and total collapse that brings seating down to below 80K for multiple consecutive games, like I originally said. This is the only series of events that will yield us a new coach in 2014.
It has to hit them where it hurts - money from attendance. It's already bad, but it's got to be 'stadium quarter empty even with tickets being given away bad' for something to happen.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I agree with his sentiment||
that Brandon is in self preservation mode and Hoke is a dead man walking. Doesn't mean I expect either of them to be leaving anytime soon.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||thank you||
this guy gets it.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||You guys are setting yourself up for disappointment||
Much like the post-2010 season coaching search.
Nothing happens fast and there has been _zero_ indication that the AD is willing to pay big (10 milion for head coach along with OC/DC) to get a winner. They'll get someone for 3 or 4 million, he may or may not work out.
This isn't an intellectual arguement - this has happened now, once. It's about to happen again in a year.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Absolutely nothing is going to happen||
to Brandon or Hoke until attendence dips below 80K, for multiple consecutive games. Until then you can keep dreaming. The timeline that MGoBlog and Twitter think this is all going to happen is laughable. It's going to take at least a year, at the earliest. I would say two years.
Hoke is going to be around for 2015 because the coaching talent pool is shallow and we need a slam dunk hire. If this was a good year for coaching replacements, it might happen this year, but that's not the case.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||where are you citing that from||
I'd like to read that.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Serious coaches require serious money||
We're not serious unless we actually start playing the game that the rest of the top programs are - $10 million/year for coach and the OC/DC. I am skeptical that Michigan is willing to spend that kind of money, even though the donor base is one of the few rich enough to bank roll it. They don't want to seem desperate, but they aren't flashing the cash to bring the big names in. That's another barrier we need to pass. Let's not kid ourselves here - this is a business, there is no such thing as amateur athletics anymore.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||too late||
These changes needed to made at the end of the 2013 season for there to have been any hope for Hoke. At this point though, the situation is too toxic.

|11 weeks 5 days ago||$55/month||
Parents have 100mbit downstream / 20mbit upstream from Comcast with Preferred TV package (probably around 300 channels) and pay $165 a month. I have a Gargoyle router that dedicates 8mbit to one Slingbox, 8mbit to another, and 2mbit of give breathing room for general internet use. They pay $165/month. I bought them a Motorola Surfboard 6141 and I own the TiVo's on each cable outlet; they are on lifetime service. They have free telephone service from Ooma, I bought and paid for the hardware.
My sister, who lives in Chicago, uses one of the Slinboxes. I live in Detroit, and use the other. We have our computers hooked up to LCD's when we want to watch TV, with more than enough bandwidth for HD streaming of live channels. I have five other housemates (it's a rennovated 4K sq mansion) and we share 50mbit downstream / 10mbit upstream service from Comcast. Our Comcast bill comes out to $65/month or $15/person.
My sister and I pay my parents $40 a month to help defer to the costs of their service. So my parents are paying $85/month after my sister and I pay them for the TV service we use, which brings my bill to $55 a month ($15 for internet service at my own residence, $40 to my parents)
I'm curious though, who is your ISP in Korea? Did they string fiber to your residence? How long ago was this?
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Uhh||
Projects like this easily run into the millions. Getting fiber backhaul to the tower is the biggest task - pulling permits to lay the fiber, digging up streets, restricting traffic. Easily runs into the millions.

this times one million. I know we pat ourselves on the back for underwriting all these non-revenue sports, but keep in mind that is underwritten by football's success, which in turn is underwritten by the school. If football falls off the tracks for an extended period of time, the school will need to step in.
Yes, while the AD manages its own budget, the school has acted as a backstop on numerous occassions. I believe the operating debt of the AD (short term financing for construction projects) has the school written in as a co-signer to lower interest rates, and I know during the 2010 season, many of the suites were 'occupied' by University organs.
like Brian said, DB is just a bro writing a check, nothing more. I will tip my cap to his fundraising ability, getting Stephen Ross to write a $100 million dollar check was impressive though.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||Re: Schedule||
|1 year 9 weeks ago||we're still a generation away||
If you combine Apple, Google, and Microsoft's market capitilizations you're either slightly north of $1 Trillion dollars, or pretty darn close.
All three have tried to negotiate a-la-carte programming deals, and failed. Even with their financial resources and technical expertise, they still haven't been able to crack a-la-carte programming.
It's just not possible at this time; everyone in the current chain of distribution (providers, content producers, etc.) is making too much money. Granted there are outliers who may be struggling, but if you're in the current basic cable distribution framework, chances are you're doing pretty well.
You're going to see an increase in the number of distribution fights like the one between CBS and Time Warner that's going on right now. As the number of video subscribers cut the cord (a small number, but growing) networks are going to fight over a smaller and smaller consumer base. The Cable/TeleCos will keep increasing prices until they can't. And then they'll start capping the monthly GB usage consumption to combat over-the-top programming coming from Netflix and other streaming services.
Physical access is still king, and always will be.
On the topic of providers, here's an interesting statistic -
"AT&T and Verizon dominate a wireless industry that is already heavily concentrated – more so than the auto, oil, or banking industries. The largest two wireless carriers control almost 70 percent of industry revenues, compared to the top two auto makers controlling 35 percent, the top two oil firms controlling 25 percent and the two largest banks controlling only 20 percent of their industry revenues. This state of affairs is bad for consumers, and it is bad for the vendors and service providers who make up the wireless ecosystem."
To combat rising access costs, I have a grandfathered unlimited data account from Verizon that I use as my primary internet connection (I tether my iPhone to a router that provides Wifi access to other devices at my residence), and a Slingbox stationed at my parent's house to sling TV to my Macbook in my apartment. I buy my phones at the unsubsidized price, off contract to retain my unlimited data account through Verizon.

I kind of anticipated this. Fortunately, there are some easy workarounds going forward.
Everyone needs to save everything that they upload. At the end of the academic calendar year, a consolidated torrent with everything that has been uploaded can be created. Everything for that season is contained within that torrent. That way multiple people have copies of the archive.
While they can take down torrents/accounts ad infinitum, the URL on MGoVideo.com will never change, since the embed to where the video is stored on YouTube can easily be altered.
Anyone know contact emails for Wolverine Devotee and Wolverine Historian? Especially for the older material, I'd like to begin consolidating and taking account of what source material we do have.

I'm taking the longview on this - your app offers a much more coherent way to sift through data than anything I've encountered. It's the future. THE FUTUREEEEE. No, but really - someone needs to do this strictly because it's the cornerstone for future crowdsourced webapps or collaboration. Small amount of non-referral traffic? Who cares.
what if I want to see every play that Denard ran against BCS teams who ran a 4-3 defense, and have all the snaps in a playlist? Eventually, we're going to compile and index the data where that's possible.
everyone has to start somewhere. I really enjoy the work you do WolverineBlue, and I hope you continue iterating on these ehanced UFR's.

not the result we were looking for, but I appreciate the effort nonetheless.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||Bingo||
I've always held that gripe. 2-3 seconds is not a long enough delay. Now granted, it's entirely dependent on our line controlling the LOS (derp) or being able to hold on that long. Can we do that against the ND front 7?

The announcers and camerawork can be sourced from FSD and syndicated over BTN's network. CBC does this for NBC at times.
BTN and FSD are employees of the same parent company.
|2 years 35 weeks ago||CCHA playoffs?||
will our CCHA playoff showing factor into PWR? sorry, I'm new to this PWR thing.
|2 years 35 weeks ago||this||
BTN can't afford to send a crew to Ann Arbor? Really?
And this is the second time they've done this for a Michigan game (first time was at Munn last Friday)
|2 years 35 weeks ago||no||
but the BTN anouncers do. they are the wurst.
|2 years 35 weeks ago||FSD or FSD+?||
did they announce as to whether the game will be on Fox Sports Detroit or Fox Sports Detroit Plus? Guide is currently saying sharty's game is on FSD during that time, so they would either kick them off (lulz) or put it on FSD+.
Edit: HALOL, they kicked sparty off of FSD and put us on there tonight instead! Confirmed by FSD on twitter.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||yes.||
there has to be a drupal module that 'mobilizes' the site, yes?
|2 years 36 weeks ago||ha||
our radio guys just said that the BTN announcers are watching/doing commentary in Chicago.
Derp. You would think they would sync the the audio/video and then deliver it to the relay. Say what you will about ESPN, but they are light years ahead of the BTN in terms of production.

where can I find the wiziwig stream? I'm not seeing it in the 'NCAA hockey' section.
|2 years 42 weeks ago||:(||
both the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings had games tonight, so our game was not broadcast on TV. I've pinged FSD's Twitter account to see they even recorded it, and if they would air a re-play of the game. Cross your fingers.

|2 years 43 weeks ago||true, most of the time||
although if you were take a stroll on the main street side box level during the 2010 season, that statement could be refuted. certain branches of the university were renting suites. little known fact right there.
I don't subscribe to the mark of a successful program being 'spend spend spend'. the rebuttal is that the nature of college althetics demands it, that competing in the tier-1 level of D1 football requires a massive amount of capital.
this only holds true if the macroeconomic conditions support it. I'm of the belief that this country will continue to experience a decreased standard of living for quite some time (BLS data and anyone over the age of 50 can tell you that).
we've turned a surplus into a sizable defecit. Glick at $27 million was reasonable, the rennovations at Schembechler are reasonable, and the scoreboards were reasonable (not an engineer, but the strucutural work done around the stadium might have been contingent for the scoreboards going on, so scratch those as well)
I think the boxes and suites were too much. my biggest fear is that if there is precipitous decline, the University will bridge-loan the AD. msu is doing this already, to a degree. But that is not how things are done here.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||dude||
great memories. I remember playing in tournaments in Grand Rapids and I was honestly more excited to play mini stick hockey than the actual games.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||we need a SarBox||
we need a Sarbones-Oxley equivalent for AD's/ President's. There's too much money floating around (recruiting), and the legal framework is way far behind.
The profit focused nature current D1 programs warrants it. Have the NCAA give players a very modest stipend, any monetary gain the player receives beyond that would jeopordize the tax exempt status of the athletic department. Watch how quickly things would then shape up.

I was in section 121, row 25. Maybe five rows up there was a guy who looked like The Dude, with an extra 20 lbs, sunglasses, block M hat, and shorts. Constantly taunting msu fans and calling them the Tartans (green & gold = Wayne state) not even the msu brah's would challenge this guy. The entire second half he stood there with an unlit cigarette in his mouth, defiant until the end.

historically, universities have been accessible to the extremely industrious, gifted, or wealthy.
Only within the last 50-60 years has it been accessible to the broader public. unfortunately, I believe we will revert back (and depending on how bloated the org structure is, this can be quite painful).

thx. hopefully the ESPNU or BTN HD replay has the first minute and a half and so I can stitch the missing segment in.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||yeah||
I was wondering about that...was the first 1:12 being shown live on ESPN/2 at the time? do any of the upcoming scheduled replays have the game in its entirety?
Not a huge deal, but 100 years from now when the historians are trading rare copies of games, would be nice to have the whole broadcast.
(for those of you who were at the game - ABC didn't start broadcasting until after the Auburn vs. MSU game was finished)

Don't want to jinx it but if we go into that game with a certain record, it will be a 3:30 start. Good storyline for ABC to sell.

|3 years 9 weeks ago||Update||
So based on the feedback I received, I think I'm going to write a tutorial on how to setup OpenVPN on Amazon EC2 availability zones in US West/Europe. There's a few reasons why I think this route would be best (although I understand that not everyone's needs will be met by this, I think it's the optimal solution)
1) You'll be watching the games on ESPN3. Every Michigan game will be available then if you're using a West Coast/EU VPN. Even if you live in Michigan and are under the blackout, you'd be able sidestep it with this
2) For games on the BTN, I believe you can stream these games with their new BTN2Go service. You'd need to connect to the EU zone.
More details coming in the next few days.
|3 years 9 weeks ago||Bingo||
OSU will claim that they told Sarniak to get lost.
But the broader issue here is that too much money is being made, the players/parents know it, and those who intend to make money during 'the process', do make money.
So what now?
|3 years 9 weeks ago||fork||
I thought I'd fork it off from that thread for the purpose of discussing ramifications to the NCAA. Quite a bit of that thread is copy/paste from the article along with some dicussion on broader NCAA implications.
I thought the NCAA part might deserve its own thread. The content of the piece certainly did.

|3 years 10 weeks ago||just ordered NFL gamepass||
just ordered NFL gamepass (signed up with US billing address, it worked. nice call)
here is the million dollar question though - I have a desktop with a 100mbit connection to the internet (does 12.5mb/s all day, both up and down) and two network cards sitting in the machine (I can plug in ethernet from the switch into each jack, no problem)
I'm going to need to connect to the VPN in order to tap into Gamepass...But would it be possible with Windows (has to be Mac/Windows, more below) to have two seperate IP addresses?The second network connection would be screengrabbing Gamepass using Adobe FMLE to create a Flash stream of what's on the screen.
Adobe FMLE is only for OS X/Windows, so no Linux.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||ah, the force is strong with||
ah, the force is strong with this one :)
how would I go about creating a VPN (L2TP/IPSec) with a micro EC2 instance? I'm aware of what EC2 is/does, but my Linux skills are lacking.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||VPN's route all traffic||
VPN's route all traffic (including streams), proxies do not. Fundamental difference.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||not that simple. when you||
not that simple. when you connect to the (live) streaming video, you will need to have an IP address outside North America, or the stream fails to start.
the proxy workaround for the signup process also doesn't circument the requirement of having an EU billing address on your credit card ;)
|3 years 10 weeks ago||no .CA||
pretty sure they restrict Canadian users as well. You need to be somewhere outside North America.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||eh||
you get what you pay for - I pay $20/month for Goldenfrog. It works on my iPhone/iPad;, when they release the NFL Gamepass apps, I will be able to use those as well.
I get 4Mbit downstream/ 1Mbit upstream from the VPN. You need at least 3.5Mbit downstream to take advantage of the HD stream you're paying for from the NFL.
You aren't going to get those speeds for cheaper than $20/month (I did my homework on this)
|3 years 10 weeks ago||This||
I typically go with the 'the truth is somewhere in in the middle', but with this case, one of two things will happen -
1) OSU gets off free, there is such an uproar that systemic change to the NCAA occurs or
2) OSU gets hammered to the wall.
The NCAA moves at a glacial pace, so 2 looks more likely than 1.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||most likely answer||

If you could do a quick and dirty prototype with RoR, you might find some people interested in lending a hand. You'd probably have to pour 100 hours (most of which would be parsing data) into this to get something really rough that is production ready, but it would be a start.
