I'll answer the question for you - no charges were filed.
|4 days 18 hours ago||can we stop this bullshit||
unless charges are filed, it's her word against his. There may be some compelling evidence, but these are allegations, not charges. This is a criminal allegation, handled by police. It stayed as an allegation.No charges were brought against either of these players.
The dismissal from the team is a judgement call, made by the person making that judgement. But that does not make any sort of legal judgement, which is the judgement which matters most.
It's reprehensible that a person on the football team would even be in a situation where this was alledged, but I'm really sick of this things being thrown around without the full context of the situation (a lack of charges being brought)

Williams? Swarthmore? Pamona?
lol. And don't give me this "they're great schools!" nonsense.
These Forbe articles are nothing but an open hand from Forbes to have these smaller schools get advertisement and for Forbes to get some back door money - enrollment at small liberal art schools has been in decline since the last recession. Gee, I wonder why?
They're paying to have articles/rankings written like this so they can try and reverse the declining enrollment.

why not here, and why not now? Also, who are they lining up against that has you worried so much prior to October 17th and the last Saturday in November? Do we not have the coach that can actually take talent and develop it? Is the talent and coaching we face outside of two Saturdays really better? In my estimation, it's not.
Last time I checked, our current guy has done that better than anyone else in the country.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||tired of the defeatist bullshit here||
which is not based on any forward looking realistic projection. Yes, the past was bad. Really bad. The talent _is there_ though. The coach sucked. He was a talent and food black hole.
If you don't think there will be a marked improvement from the WR group (admitedly, it wouldn't take much) then I would love to hear your thoughts on how Harbaugh must be coachspeak bullshitter with respect to his comment on how he expects this group to compete for a national championship.

Look, there's a reason why Harbaugh said he's looking to win a national championship this year and it's not just coachspeak - the dude knows the hand he has relative to the schedule he's playing; he knows it can be done.

Rudock is good. Not great, just good. He actually limits his mistakes and has shown he can thread the needle in the few moments that Iowa asked him to that, which wasn't nearly as often as it should have been, because Iowa.

No I don't know the future, but based on what I've seen/heard, that's what I'm going with.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||I don't see the OOC part as being very tough||
Utah is missing some key personnel where we would definitely benefit from - for our passing game to work on Game 1, we definitely need some help there. And we got it - Ruddock + their two CB's graduating/replacement CB being dismissed from the program.
BYU - tough, but at home. Offense/Defense should start hitting their stride by this game.
Oregon State - win
UNLV - garbage.
Maryland - might be difficult, but we have a talent/coaching advantage.
It's the Minnesota/PSU games that are a bit tricky - playing at night in Happy Valley is never easy. But their OL (still) sucks. We can win that.
sparty - hand to hand combat
ohio state - war
if we can break through and beat sparty, this team gets a huge shot of confidence and is entirely in control of their destiny. And anything can and does happen in games against ohio state.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||lol at them thinking Michigan||
lol at them thinking Michigan won't be great this year. Uh, guys - Utah is very much looking like a win since their two CB's aren't there/new DC. msu game is the fulcrum - we win that, and it's for all the marbles when osu comes to town.

There is no argument, it's known. Adidas is just inferior from a design standpoint with respect to Michigan apparel, material composition, and overall construction- it's ugly.

It's a big deal because Adidas is 2nd best, Michigan is not. When you're wearing your teams gear/logo, and you're among the enemy in the workplace, you want to feel like you have best stuff (after wins and losses of course). Adidas made garbage - just pure garbage. Nike makes some nice stuff.

|3 weeks 5 days ago||A couple things||
1) Cotton hoodies/crewneck sweatshirts that say 'Michigan Football' in our normal font with a swoosh. It is amazing how adidas screwed up the most basic designs by trying to be edgy. Classic is timeless. It sells. Don't mess with it by adding extra stripes or other nonsense. Make high quality basic pieces, and let the kids eat up the more exotic stuff.
2) You'll notice the first word for #1 begins with 'Cotton' - I looked at Tenneesee's athletic apparel site (http://shop.utsports.com/) and was disappointed to see that many of the hoodies/crewneck sweatshirts are polyester. Polyester sucks. If I'm going to drop $60-70 on a hoodie, it better be made with at least 70% cotton.
3) These home jerseys - use the same design from the 1995 season;
Subtle, classy. Only those looking for the M could see it.
Use the 1999/2000 away jersey (but move the swoosh to the left shoulder-
Do these three things, and I could live with a 'uniformz' jersey they wear once a year during a night game.

perfectly valid question. i have a few t-shirts with with holes in them, but i'll be damned if I spend another dollar on adidas.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||not as far fetched as you may think||
The current deal with Adidas (somewhere between 4-5 mil?) is rumored to be what Nike is willing pay us. Essentially matching what we're currently getting. So to terminate the adidas deal and forgo adidas paying us for the 2015-2016 season, and having nike pay us instead for the 2015-2016 season; there would be no intreruption in cash flow in this scenario.
Of course this would all be contingent on adidas willfully opting out of the contract as well - I don't see that happening. They are going to milk sales for all its worth this last year if Michigan Football/Basketball have big years. That is they see fans holding off on purchasing gear when it's announced (please god let it happen) that Michigan will be going back to Nike.

|10 weeks 5 days ago||Nike is in the business of making money||
you understand how contracts work, right?
Just have it written in the contract that Michigan has to first approve any and all apparel designs/branding with the AD first.
Preferablay someone in the AD with taste.
Tennessee wasn't paying attention, Nike wanted to quickly get a return on the money they are now paying Tennessee, and switched things up without first consulting Tennessee(because that would slow down sales, and because it wasn't probably written into their contract) and now Tennessee is not happy? Nike is just trying to make money asap since they just dropped a few million to outfit Tennessee.
This is a basic business/life skill - pay attention to your assets (your brand/images/logos/whatever) and have ultimate control of what represents your University.
It's fine that Nike is trying to make money on the deal - just have ultimate say over the Nike designs so it doesn't embarass you.
This is actually a good lesson for Michigan. Requires competent administration though, in many different departments/silos.

|11 weeks 3 days ago||It can and will change very quickly||
Right now they can sell the results. The truth is the national draw of sparty is about as powerful as Oregon State, if Orgeon State had the same record.
Who grows up wanting to play for Oregon State? No one. When sparty reverts to the mean when Michigan starts winning this Fall, no one will care. Because sparty doesn't have the history, tradition, and money that Michigan does. Those three things carry you through the lean times. They have no reserves to carry them through those lean times when both Michigan and Ohio State are at full throttle. I tip their hat to them in that they have very much taken advantage of Michigan's downturn.
But Michigan has a limited window to right the ship before we start (and already have begun to encounter) a generation of kids who do not know of Michigan's successes prior to 2003.
Fortunately we have just the Michigan Man for the job.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||just be sure to run the projection correctly||
it's not all about the guranteed money, it's also about the potential increase in sales when we switch back to Nike.
Nike only needs to offer somewhere between $3-4 million. There is _millions_ of dollars waiting in wallets for them to switch back to Nike apparel, more than enough in future sales to cover the hypothetical loss we will take fielding a lower offer from Nike.

On the road and with family today so I will have to re-visit this in a follow up post, but Troy is a great place to live.
Blah blah blah, go away hipers with your 'sterile suburban enviroment' - Troy is safe (one of the safest cities in the country), has some of the best high schools in Michigan (second only to the International Academy), is diverse (over 50 languages spoken by families in Troy), and financially healthy.
Birmingham is 10 minutes away (I'm at 18 and Crooks), Ferndale is 20 min down Woodward, and Detroit is 25 minutes away (down 75) with no traffic. Troy intra-city traffic is reasonable, the roads could use some work but they are putting $4 million into some repairs this summer.
With some of those other cities mentioned above, they are inundated with traffic during the commute home, and depending how far you are from the downtown area, you get a lot of cross town traffic coming into your city. Clawson//Rochester/Rochester Hills are good alternatives.
Troy is a great place to live! Let me know if you have any questions.

I stopped buying Michigan gear from Adidas a few ago - I bought my basic ('Michigan Football / Michigan Basketball') t-shirts in 09. They are probably due to be replaced but I am over adidas and the whole era from the 07'-'14 seasons.
UA is a solid entrance into the apparel game, but they are no Nike, with respect to NIke's solid construction across their entire portfolio. Nike is a way different company now than what they were 10 years ago, they have really upped their game with respect to customer satisfation, having law abiding/safe manufacturing practices and facilities, and investing in new material research and development.
Their stock is at an all time high - there is too much at stake for them to cut corners, and they don't want to mess up a good thing. They are printing money at this point, pretty much at the top of their game.
Please, please let us go back to Nike. I would buy at least $300-400 worth of replacement Michigan gear (t-shirts, hoodies, pullovers, polos, etc.)
In the conversations I've had with fellow alums, I know there is a lot of pent up demand/money waiting for Nike to come back.
Key point - We do not need to have the biggest $ deal in CFB. We only need 75% (4.5mil?) of what we had with adidas, and the increase in apparel sales will make up the rest for the AD's revenue.

Yes, I realize Nike puts out a ton of polyester stuff, too. But the shoes are a night and day difference, and Nike's high-end cotton stuff is well made.
With the handful of fans I've talked to this about, they are waiting to purchase replacement apparel until we switch back to Nike.
Apparel sales are down, I leave it to the board to dilineate how much of that is the on-field product, and how much of that is dissatisfaction with Adidas. If Nike could give us 4 million (just below FSU's contract), I think the increase in sales from the pent-up demand could more than make up the difference.

Okay, let me send this report to Bolivia - I can't say too much but let's just say I supported the war effort from 2010-2013.
Internally, the team uses a piece of software called XOS Thunder, which combines the two endzone shots and 50yd line shot for each and every play. The team uses this in position/team meetings - 99% of college football teams also use this same piece of software.
Outside of Schembechler Hall the players have access to a service called Hudl - Hudl is available on iOS/Android, although most players use this on their laptops. It takes the same video ingested into XOS and makes it available through the web via a modern (IE11/Chrome/Safari) browser. The same video is available for the players to review on their own time, outside of the football building.
Although Hudl on iOS/Android is a great app (Hudl itself was founded by some Nebraska software guys and a former Microsoft executive from Nebraska), the web interface on a laptop is 100x better. This is why the players don't have iPads.

You want to hire AD's that emphasize balance and have a football team that goes 7-5/8-4 every year? Good luck getting above 80K at a game then. What do you see in the college football landscape that suggests balance in any form? We are at full tilt at this point.
I have a feeling that Schissel is annoyed with all fuss coming from athletics. He said all the right things last Friday, but the feeling get coming from is 'this is a huge waste of time'. The guy is no dummy though, he understands that the current and future donors come from a share culutural bond through athletics. Here's the thing though - I don't think he _believes_ it, like you and the other alums do. He believes over the course of 25-30 years they can maintain fundraising while athletics slowly becomes mediocre over the course of natural reasons (bad hires/things not panning out). Northwestern still has a ~$8 billion endowment without athletics being such a big deal. That's what they're aiming for.
Again though, the stadium saves us - in order to keep that thing from being below 80K, they need a decent product.

|40 weeks 5 days ago||I was wrong||
and it sucks. I deeply love Michigan Football. I thought they would go 10-2 this year.
some fun facts - I actually worked with a member of staff during the 2010-2013 seasons. I was there for every practice in 2010. I actually couldn't tell you anything based on practices on a week to week basis and I watch a decent amount of football every week on TV. After that, I only helped out on home gamedays only. I never attended any team/position meetings but inside Schembechler was rather mundane - it truly is just the coaches in the office most of the time. I did posit some high level analysis at one point but it was never pushed up - 'they won't read it'. The GA's are mostly doing the gruntwork on combing over scouting reports/formations/etc - this then gets passed along to the coaches. The coaches do a brief amount of scouting on their own as well, together as a group. I think the GA's read MGoBlog.
It was kinda neat being on the inside but I mostly kept to myself - I'm a pretty nerdy guy and didn't want to look out of place more than what I already was.

I see players laughing and conversing after the game. I don't get it.
|43 weeks 5 hours ago||You have to look at longer||
You have to look at longer arcs of time. Notre Dame finally has stability after 20 years. Will it take that long? Who knows. But we have the one thing that can at least buy you time while you go through 5 or 6 hands over a decade or two - proud alumni with a shitload of money. Ross may be rich, but he can't subsidize 40-50K empty seats a week.
|43 weeks 8 hours ago||this||
|43 weeks 4 days ago||we have different timelines||
we have different timelines then as to when we think Hoke will be let go.
we're not the ones making the decision, Brandon is. Brandon will delay until he can't. I think the rationale that Brandon will give to the regents/president will be - look, I want Hoke gone too, but I've conferred with this search firm and even they say that options we have a replacement aren't very good...Oh and I've raised a ton of money for you guys, I want this to get better but we have to stay the course because if we get this wrong, we're just going to be doing this again in 3 or 4 years, just like the span from 2007 to 2010.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||1) the pool is bad, this is||
1) the pool is bad, this is not in dispute
2) non-zero probability that the pool will be better next year
3) allows them to delay an embarassing decision
this isn't a belief, it's an observation. You're right, there is a greater probability that the coaches available next year won't meet that slam dunk hire criteria either. But for the reasons stated above, this is why the AD will decide to not fire him, unless the sub-80K attendance thing happens.
I hope I'm wrong too, but unfortunately this plays out the way I described above.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||simple||
I don't know if it's going to be deeper next year but in the absence of a solid option, they'll keep him. We have a for sure thing today (bad pool) to delay in the hope of a better pool tomorrow and it spares us the embarrassment (_their_ embarassment, the AD. The AD doesn't care how you feel, unless it impacts the money) of the firing a coach for another day. This kind of how, you know, our government works as well. Not saying this is how things _should_ be done, it's just how things are.
The AD will wait until the very last moment or if it's a complete and total collapse that brings seating down to below 80K for multiple consecutive games, like I originally said. This is the only series of events that will yield us a new coach in 2014.
It has to hit them where it hurts - money from attendance. It's already bad, but it's got to be 'stadium quarter empty even with tickets being given away bad' for something to happen.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||I agree with his sentiment||
that Brandon is in self preservation mode and Hoke is a dead man walking. Doesn't mean I expect either of them to be leaving anytime soon.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||thank you||
this guy gets it.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||You guys are setting yourself up for disappointment||
Much like the post-2010 season coaching search.
Nothing happens fast and there has been _zero_ indication that the AD is willing to pay big (10 milion for head coach along with OC/DC) to get a winner. They'll get someone for 3 or 4 million, he may or may not work out.
This isn't an intellectual arguement - this has happened now, once. It's about to happen again in a year.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||Absolutely nothing is going to happen||
to Brandon or Hoke until attendence dips below 80K, for multiple consecutive games. Until then you can keep dreaming. The timeline that MGoBlog and Twitter think this is all going to happen is laughable. It's going to take at least a year, at the earliest. I would say two years.
Hoke is going to be around for 2015 because the coaching talent pool is shallow and we need a slam dunk hire. If this was a good year for coaching replacements, it might happen this year, but that's not the case.
|43 weeks 5 days ago||where are you citing that from||
I'd like to read that.
|43 weeks 6 days ago||Serious coaches require serious money||
We're not serious unless we actually start playing the game that the rest of the top programs are - $10 million/year for coach and the OC/DC. I am skeptical that Michigan is willing to spend that kind of money, even though the donor base is one of the few rich enough to bank roll it. They don't want to seem desperate, but they aren't flashing the cash to bring the big names in. That's another barrier we need to pass. Let's not kid ourselves here - this is a business, there is no such thing as amateur athletics anymore.
|43 weeks 6 days ago||too late||
These changes needed to made at the end of the 2013 season for there to have been any hope for Hoke. At this point though, the situation is too toxic.

|52 weeks 19 hours ago||$55/month||
Parents have 100mbit downstream / 20mbit upstream from Comcast with Preferred TV package (probably around 300 channels) and pay $165 a month. I have a Gargoyle router that dedicates 8mbit to one Slingbox, 8mbit to another, and 2mbit of give breathing room for general internet use. They pay $165/month. I bought them a Motorola Surfboard 6141 and I own the TiVo's on each cable outlet; they are on lifetime service. They have free telephone service from Ooma, I bought and paid for the hardware.
My sister, who lives in Chicago, uses one of the Slinboxes. I live in Detroit, and use the other. We have our computers hooked up to LCD's when we want to watch TV, with more than enough bandwidth for HD streaming of live channels. I have five other housemates (it's a rennovated 4K sq mansion) and we share 50mbit downstream / 10mbit upstream service from Comcast. Our Comcast bill comes out to $65/month or $15/person.
My sister and I pay my parents $40 a month to help defer to the costs of their service. So my parents are paying $85/month after my sister and I pay them for the TV service we use, which brings my bill to $55 a month ($15 for internet service at my own residence, $40 to my parents)
I'm curious though, who is your ISP in Korea? Did they string fiber to your residence? How long ago was this?
|52 weeks 20 hours ago||Uhh||
Projects like this easily run into the millions. Getting fiber backhaul to the tower is the biggest task - pulling permits to lay the fiber, digging up streets, restricting traffic. Easily runs into the millions.
|52 weeks 20 hours ago||Density matters||
I kind of laugh when people overseas brag about the monthly rate for the services they're getting - the residential composition is no where close to analogous to the US.

this times one million. I know we pat ourselves on the back for underwriting all these non-revenue sports, but keep in mind that is underwritten by football's success, which in turn is underwritten by the school. If football falls off the tracks for an extended period of time, the school will need to step in.
Yes, while the AD manages its own budget, the school has acted as a backstop on numerous occassions. I believe the operating debt of the AD (short term financing for construction projects) has the school written in as a co-signer to lower interest rates, and I know during the 2010 season, many of the suites were 'occupied' by University organs.
like Brian said, DB is just a bro writing a check, nothing more. I will tip my cap to his fundraising ability, getting Stephen Ross to write a $100 million dollar check was impressive though.
|1 year 15 weeks ago||Re: Schedule||
|1 year 50 weeks ago||we're still a generation away||
If you combine Apple, Google, and Microsoft's market capitilizations you're either slightly north of $1 Trillion dollars, or pretty darn close.
All three have tried to negotiate a-la-carte programming deals, and failed. Even with their financial resources and technical expertise, they still haven't been able to crack a-la-carte programming.
It's just not possible at this time; everyone in the current chain of distribution (providers, content producers, etc.) is making too much money. Granted there are outliers who may be struggling, but if you're in the current basic cable distribution framework, chances are you're doing pretty well.
You're going to see an increase in the number of distribution fights like the one between CBS and Time Warner that's going on right now. As the number of video subscribers cut the cord (a small number, but growing) networks are going to fight over a smaller and smaller consumer base. The Cable/TeleCos will keep increasing prices until they can't. And then they'll start capping the monthly GB usage consumption to combat over-the-top programming coming from Netflix and other streaming services.
Physical access is still king, and always will be.
On the topic of providers, here's an interesting statistic -
"AT&T and Verizon dominate a wireless industry that is already heavily concentrated – more so than the auto, oil, or banking industries. The largest two wireless carriers control almost 70 percent of industry revenues, compared to the top two auto makers controlling 35 percent, the top two oil firms controlling 25 percent and the two largest banks controlling only 20 percent of their industry revenues. This state of affairs is bad for consumers, and it is bad for the vendors and service providers who make up the wireless ecosystem."
To combat rising access costs, I have a grandfathered unlimited data account from Verizon that I use as my primary internet connection (I tether my iPhone to a router that provides Wifi access to other devices at my residence), and a Slingbox stationed at my parent's house to sling TV to my Macbook in my apartment. I buy my phones at the unsubsidized price, off contract to retain my unlimited data account through Verizon.
