was at the hockey game earlier tonight (had to leave early for a meeting at school), and the vitriol aimed at brandon permeated the student section - resounding chants of 'fire dave' came often, particularly when ads played on the video board. even more encouraging of my beleif that student fans would get behind this protest.

im going to talk to some people I know at CSG tomorrow to see if they are willing to help us in any way. if there are any other student volunteers who want to help me champion this cause, shoot me an email at email@example.com
also shoot me an email if you have any other ideas about how we can make this a reality. i'm certainly open to suggestions and to calibrating our strategy to make this work effectively.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||if we start campaigning now||
if we start campaigning now and making the seeds of this protest visible amongst the michigan community, we can get in front of the message and everyone in that stadium will know exactly why we aren't there for kickoff - to demonstrate our discontent with brandon's incompetence as athletic director.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||fair point, but i really||
fair point, but i really don't think the football team can be embarassed any further. we keep talking about how disgruntled the students are about ticket prices, lackluster home schedules, etc., but all i hear are complaints and no action. A rally will get quick notice from fans and the media, but we need something more than 500 students milling around the diag. brandon has to go, and he's been clever to craft these protests as abberations and deflect public outrage at the handling of concussion gate by countering that it not an indicative baromoter by which to gauge support for him and his policies. and even if you think this may 'embarass the team', we should not embarass ourselves by reinforcing brandon's own discordant beliefs about his relationship with students, and his piss poor treatment of a very VERY serious health issue. instead of taking the lead (promoting research at the university, testing concussion sensors, etc.) on this concussion issue, brandon has decided that giving the trainers walkie talkies (why didn't they have them before?!) is going to prevent further miscommunications. something needs to be done to effect change around here, and signs and rallys aren't going to cut it. i strongly believe that if the message of this protest is molded correctly and publicized pervasively, it will NOT be construed by anyone - fans, players, announcers, etc - as a slight against the players and the team itself. this is about brandon's mismanagement and stupefying rationalizations for his despicable behavior.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||re: concerns||
it sounds like people are concerned that no one will notice if we are not in our seats just before kickoff. if we are succesful and the student section is empty, it will be MUCH more noticable than some of the poor student showings earlier this year.
But more important than that, is the publicity. If the campus and media, etc. are AWARE of this protest prior to the game, the story will write itself. That's why to make this work we have publicize this as best we can and get as many students on board. If it gets as much attention as say the rally did, media outlets will be talking about it well before the game, and - if the broadcasters are aware - may even mention it beforehand.
I'm up for extending this to regular ticket holders, but that's probably going to be difficult to organize effectively. The student section is small(ish) and manageable in that regard. But if you want to protest with the rest of us then by all means join us!
And finally, I understand that this can be construed as disrespectful to the players. But if we are serious about change in the AD we need to make a statement and I believe this is the best possible option. Everyone is going to filter back to their seats after kickoff (there will likely be a TV timeout anyway, giving more time for the student section to fill back up). We can also help mitigate this perception if we publicize this and get our message and intentions across before the demonstration itself, and emphasize that this is not a slight to the players, but is aimed squarely at the AD.
If this is managed right, it will work.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||i think the subsequent rallys||
i think the subsequent rallys at the regents meeting or whatever are a great idea, but its likely to have only about 1000 students (at most) and brandon, the regents, etc will likely treat this as just another abberation; not representative of the collective opinion of all michigan students. and another rally, while great, will be seen as a bit stale - we NEED something more creative, somehting more impressionable.
the optics for such a campaign to oust Brandon need to be right. nothing will be more attention grabbing than a boycott of kickoff at PSU. with those overhead shots the image will be burned into the eyeballs of television audiences everywhere and is likely to be replyed on sportscenter and other news programs. the announcers will likely start talking about and will be a running conversation throughout the game. the regents will have no choice after that game but to fire brandon.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||i dont think the logistics of||
i dont think the logistics of a boycott of kickoff at PSU would actually be that hard. if we publicize, through this blog and elsewhere (remember, the national media is already looking at mgoblog and the forums! and things are definitely bound to heat up this week), I think most students would be aware of the protest. For those that arent, thanks to the bottleneck at the section entrances, it would be very easy to voice our intent to those who didn't get the memo - im thinking having 'volunteers' stand outside each section with large signs imploring students not to enter the stadium until after kickoff. We can also have same volunteers run down the stands right before the game kicks off and round those up who want to partake in the protest. This. could. work.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||i think a campaign to have||
i think a campaign to have students show up 20-30 minutes late for the PSU night game would be devastating for brandon. imagine a completely empty student section at kickoff, the aerial shots that will dominate the opening of the game would be the death knell for brandon - he has kept saying that his relationship with the students is "outstanding" based on the fact of the success of the the UTL games. Nothing will hurt more if we don't show for the PSU game.
Now I know that there are going to be quite a few vacancies in the student section regardless, but if we can effectively organize the students to not enter the student section until after kickoff... my god. it would be brilliant.
And by not boycotting the game completely, the students can't be called out for not supporting the team. If we were to boycott the game in its entirety it could be construed in the media and elsewhere that hte fans are turning their backs on the team. This will hit brandon where it hurts (his baby, the UTL games) while foreclosing any argument that the students have given up on the team and players.
the more i think about it the more this HAS to happen.

victim would not cooperate. for criminal charges the DA would need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. without the testimony of the victim, all evidence is either extremely circumstantial or hearsay, which is not admissible in court. DA or perhaps even the PD recognized that there was no way they would have a shot at a conviction without the cooperation of the victim, and decided not to puruse charges.

i got there at 7am to get front row seats in the student section. could have showed up at 11 as seats were empty from four rows behind me until about 11:30 and i would have been about as close. it was a pathetic sight.
when they let the queue of students who had lined up in the waiting area into the stadium at 9am, i would say there were only about 75 of us there, probably less.
