6 weeks 3 days ago hey man - i was at the ATL

hey man - i was at the ATL Final Four in 2007 - tickets/scalpers were fairly easy to comeby right up until tipoff, though the price didn't seem to drop dramatically (though that could just be my personal experience). also - it looks like the whole stadium is open for seating this year (in 07 they split the stadium in half), so there should be many more seats available. - who knows maybe even tickets would be available at the box office?

if prices don't seem to come down or if you're having difficulty finding scalpers, i'd suggest getting the stubhub app on your phone. for these big events, stubhub usually has a temporary office set up very close to the venue. keep an eye on stubhub, especially about 2 hours before tip time - the prices will just start plummeting.  i was able to get a superbowl ticket for below face this way. purchase the ticket on the phone, and you can pick up from the temp office.

if you are just looking to go to the national championship game (obviously contigent upon Michigan winning), hang outside the stadium after the semi-final games and look for dejected syracuse / loser of Louisville-Wichita State fans - they will practically give the tickets away for free.  I scored some pretty sweet Elite 8 tickets in 07 this way after Georgetown beat Vandy and I found some Vandy fans on the way out that wanted to get rid of their elite 8 tickets.

17 weeks 17 hours ago theory: this story started to

theory: this story started to implode during the runup to the heisman ceremony. i posit that the heisman committee wanted to fly in te'o's family and probably the family of his dead girlfriend for the ceremony (you often see large family contingents at these events) as it would have been a heartwarming story (especially if he had won).  committee either reaches out themselves or asks teo to get in touch. thats when everything unraveled.  the "mystery phone call" from his dead girlfriend's number on dec. 6th was probably a fabrication to deflect attention from what really caused this to come to light

30 weeks 4 days ago I don't know about college

I don't know about college football specifically, but i do work in the broadcast rights business (MLB-related) so can provide some insight. For baseball at least each broadcaster is given first choice to games based on a rotating priority system (ESPN may have top choice one week, but last choice the next.) they then choose the games they want to broadcast an then the other broadcasters choose among which games are left (it is actually much more complicated than this as there are many other factors, including how much money each broadcaster is paying for their rights, etc., but I'm just trying to make it simple for explanation purposes). I imagine something similar happens in CFB - so either BTN ha a high priority this week and choose M-MSU or ESPN passed on the game. This is just my speculation from what I've dealt with in baseball.

31 weeks 1 day ago yes, you are correct, but

yes, you are correct, but that game 7 has a very big asterisk next to it.  if JV was pitching game 1 rather than 3, you would have your best pitcher available for a game 4 or game 5 - two games which are much more likely to happen than a game 7.

in DC covering the nats/cards for work, but hoping my yanks can close this series today so we don't have to pitch sabathia tomorrow.

as for the tigers, want the tigers to pull out the victory tonight and have their rotation blown up for the ALCS.  if the yankees do make it to the LCS, I do not want anything to do with the A's... a tigers team with a messed up rotation is much more appealing.

48 weeks 6 days ago It was a trilogy. I do not

It was a trilogy. I do not speak of that failed abortion that was ressurection. And while alien 3 is questionable, the directors cut makes it a lot better.

48 weeks 6 days ago Iindelof has said if they

Iindelof has said if they make a sequel it will tangentialize even further away from the events of alien.

48 weeks 6 days ago I am so torn about this

I am so torn about this movie. The alien trilogy shaped my childhood and are among my favorite movies of all times. The instant this movie was announced I was beyond excited and have been been following everything about this movie for the past year. With Ridley directing I was so confident that he would revive a franchise that had been killed by resurrection and avp. I was going into this with really high hopes and a fanboy mentality, and I've seen it twice already.

That being said, i was extremely disappointed. Visually, the movie is stunning and worth seeing in IMAX 3D for some of the shots - this is the first movie that I think has done 3D justice. The script, however, is just god awful. Dialogue is littered with cheesy one-liners that had me wincing throughout the entire movie - this stuff can be forgiven in a mind-numbing action flick like the avengers, but Prometheus has some pretty heavy and cerebral themes that this ridiculous dialogue is so distracting and self-defeating. The subplot with vickers and the old man was totally unnecessary, and there are so many plot holes that are unfilled or tied together sloppily. Character development was so bad that trying to figure out some of the character's motivations for some of theirs actions is nearly impossible.

I blame lindelof for this train wreck. His insistence on mystery for the sake of mystery, sloppy plot holes, and terrible character development are better left for his hack work on TV with jj Abrams. Keep your polar bears and lowest-common-denominator plot devices out of my beloved alien franchise. If they do make a sequel, I sincerely hope Ridley chooses someone who can handle the material to write the treatment.

1 year 9 weeks ago i went to the final four in

i went to the final four in 2007 when i was a senior at georgetown and we were matched up against ohio state.  taking the bus down from DC with other (drunken) students and the excitement leading up to the game and the agonizing nervousness are unlike anything i have experienced before in sports - i went to all six games of the world series as my yankees clinched in '09 and stormed the field my freshman year at michigan (i transferred to gtown after that year) when we beat OSU in 03 but nothing compared to those heartpounding 40 minutes in atlanta, despite the loss.  it hurt quite a bit to lose that one, not just because it was the final four but we just had to lose to fucking ohio state.  i was miserable the rest of my time in atlanta and while i went to the final and saw Florida beat up on OSU, I kept imagining what it would be like to have my team in the final for one of these games now that i'm old enough to appreciate it.

really hope i can see gtown win one these things and michigan to do the same in football though i'd have to have a difibrulator ready should it ever happen.

i dont know about michigan basketball tickets, but i live in NYC and when I go to yankee games i usually buy my tickets 2-3 hours before game time on stubhub and print them out at home as the prices will drop dramatically.  you can end up saving a bunch of money this way.

even at the superbowl this year in indy, tickets on stubhub were going for about 2400 during the week of the superbowl but then crashed to face value (900) about an hour before kickoff.

If you are looking to find cheap tickets, its best to wait until this firesale period.  Stubhub usually cuts off their ticket sales about 2 hours before game time in NY.  I am not sure what sort of policy they may have in ann arbor, so it might be worth calling their offices to find out.  good luck.

1 year 17 weeks ago saw this comment on the NY

saw this comment on the NY Times article and really liked it. thought i would share:

"The people backing this bill are the same people who told us the VCR would make it impossible to make money with movies and that the audio cassette would be the end of recorded music. iTunes and Netflix show that people are willing to pay for content if you make it convenient, and lots of people would rather pay for a high-quality, consistent product than brave the internet backwaters to obtain pirated content. Sadly, it's still difficult to get a lot of media legally even if you are willing to pay, because the entertainment industry would rather drag their feet than embrace the future. Now they want the government to step in and fix it for them, breaking the internet in the process. If the MPAA and RIAA put the money they've spent lobbying for this bill toward innovating and creating a compelling digital product or a reasonable distribution model, then the music and film industries would be thriving. Instead they've doomed themselves to obsolescence while Apple and Netflix eat their lunches. I can understand why record companies and movie studios are scared, but we've all known the shift to digital distribution was coming for some time and this situation is very much their own making."

EDIT: I'm a new yorker and have already contacted my senators and congressman.  urge everyone to do the same

We do something similar at Georgetown - a few of the early season games are played at McDonough Arena, which is a much smaller, but is actually on campus (unlike Verizon center) - makes it easier for students to get to the game and can get noisy when it fills u. For this reason I think games at Yost would be a great idea.

Hoya Saxa! Can't be happier with this Georgetown team - after losing so many star players and seniors last year, everyone had us pegged for a rebuilding year with 10 freshman and sophomores on the team. Two victories over Memphis, and beating both Alabama and Louisville in their home courts has me thinking we could be on track for a great year, at the very least they've already exceeded my expectations. Hope they can keep the momentum going!

1 year 21 weeks ago i visited North Korea last

i visited North Korea last year and wrote a diary about it on here.  after that experience of seeing just how important Kim Jong Il was to the fabric and (relative) political stability of that country, his death is certainly not good news.  from what I have read, this is much sooner than had been anticipated, and his son has yet to gather the support of the military (and the rest of his family) to make for a smooth transition (Kim Jong Un is still in his twenties, and many generals who fought alongside Kim Il Sung are not pleased that some spoiled kid with no experience could legitimately take power).  I seriously think this siutation is prime for a coup by the miltary, and it could get pretty ugly pretty fast.  this is bad not only for North Korea, but for its regional neighbors as well - ROK, PRC, and Japan.  I would be very nervous if I was over there - the threat of civil war (god forbid even nuclear) is certainly looming in the background.  i certinaly hope this gets resolved quickly and smoothly - the sudden collapse of the North is much more dangerous than many may think.

I've been to Fenway numerous times clad in Yankee gear, but nothing compares to those three games at citizen's bank park. Philly fans are the scum of the earth. 2 years 34 weeks ago If you had read my post

If you had read my post closely, you will see i was referring to the situation in the Korean Peninsula, not North Korea post-war.  The regime "installed" by the US was the ROK, commonly referred to as South Korea.  Only until about the 1990's the dictatorships in ROK were almost as total and uncomprimisng as their counterparts in the North.  The real tragedy is that the Koreans (North & South alike) were never allowed to decide their own fate after the war.  The Koreas became expendable pawns in the climate of the Cold War, as both Russia (as well as the PRC) and the US immediately moved in andsupported brutal regimes in both countries in order to secure their spheres of influence in Asia after the collapse of the Japanese empire.  Russia and the US's stuborness to agree on nationwide elections resulted in the Korean War and hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths (If there had been an actual election, many historians believe Kim Il Sung would have swept the elections nationwide, as many of the politicians the US propped up in the south were collaborators with the Japanese during the war and generally despised by the public - meanwhile Kim Il Sung was a famous anti-japanese gureilla during the occupation and his name was known throughout the peninsula).  The war brought untold destruction to both North and South Korea and set them back in terms of economic development by decades.  To say that the US (and Russia, and China) did no evil in Korea is a laughable statement by anyone who has studied and understood the situation.  Even most South Koreans despise the fact that American troops are still in the country and see them as the biggest hinderance to reunification.

To your other point, I have read plenty of literature by North Korean defectors, and while many of their stories are credible and heartbreaking, you must realize that many of these defectors have since become official mouthpieces for the ROK, which sent all of those who defected to SK to special schools to help reimmerse and reeducate North Koreans and have been encouraged to embellish or exaggerate their stories.  However, I do not doubt for any second the viciousness and brutality of the Kim regime, and would like nothing better than for North Korea to come clean on its human rights abuses and work internally (through democratic processes or grassroots protests) to give its citizens the rights people in most democratic nations enjoy.  This is a very difficult task, however, and not as cut and dry as it may sound.

I tried to make this original post as apolitical as possible since I think politics is not a reasonable topic of discussion on a sports blog.  I just wanted to share my experiences at the Mass Games in the largest stadium on earth with people on the blog who might be interested in that aspect/sports tourism alone.  By merely mentioning the the "serious, if not catostrophic human rights situation in the country" I am thrusting an opinion on people which  would have opened that political can of worms and is why I opted not too.

If its clarification of any sort that you desire, and I've mentioned this several times in some of my follow-up posts, North Korea is one of the most oppressive nations on earth and I believe it has one of the worst human-rights records of any modern nation.

2 years 34 weeks ago Yes, I did make it onto the

Yes, I did make it onto the USS Pueblo, and they made sure to show us this ridiculous propoganda video about the event.  While I think a lof of the claims that the DPRK made about the boat's transgressions were ridiculous, it is fairly certain that the boat WAS in north korean waters and was clearly involved in espionage activities.  Robert McNamara in Fog of War is even says that he believes the boat was in DPRK waters.

2 years 34 weeks ago Thanks Rasmus.  You are

Thanks Rasmus.  You are totally correct - I was a Japanese major in college and lived there for four years, so my interest in the Korean situation stemmed from that (I detailed my exact reasons in a post above), and the main incentive of visiting the North was to help create my own opinions on the country.

As for Aquariums of Pyongyang, that is also a great book on the DPRK, although the credibility of the defector's story has been called into question, it is still a great read and gives some great insight on the numerous gulags in the North.

2 years 34 weeks ago in total, including my

in total, including my roundtrip flight to beijing (all tours to the DPRK originate from China), it ended up costing me about 4000 USD.  The trip to North Korea was 1440 Euros, and that included meals, lodging, flights to and from pyongyang, transportation, the guides, and admission to everything except the mass games which cost me an additional 80 euros.

as for my reasons , i lived in Asia for four years, minored in Korean studies, so I have always been fascinated with the Korean peninsula/situation.  Made it to South Korea over 10 times, but had always been interested in the "other half", and after reading extensively about the country (if you're interested - Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader by Bradley Martin and The Cleanest Race - How North Koreans See Themselves and Why It Matters by BR Myers are fantastic books on DPRK), finally made the decision to just go.

While i certainly believe that the current regime in Pyongyang has not done much to help its people and is the cause for much of the suffering and poverty in the northern half of the peninsula, I really wanted to make my own opinion about the north rather than just relying on what a bunch of western, non-korean scholars and journalists have to say about it.  I came away from the trip still convinced that the regime has really held the country and people back, but at the same time I believe there is a sincere desire for reunification on both sides, and really makes one lament what happened in Korea right after the war... and I think the US and Russia deserve at least part of the blame for dividing and installing such polarizing regimes.  For the most part people there were very nice and friendly and much more open-minded than I had expected.  It was a great trip, and if you are interested in Korean history/culture and are willing to be open-minded about the situation, I think it is definitly a trip worth taking.

The only place we were not allowed to take pictures was during the 2.5 hour drive down to the border with North Korea.

as someone who works in the sports industry,  i can tell you that jobs like those do not come along that often or that easy, that if you are interested in pursuing a career in sports, my best advice would be to take that job... like two weeks ago.  high profile jobs in sports (working for a team like Ohio State) are some of the most sought after in the industry and they pretty much only come about based on who you know (in this case Mrs. Tressel), that it would be absolutely foolish to turn it down.  Most people who want to break into the sports industry would kill for a job like that.  furthermore, the sports world is so small that working at a place like OSU will not only look great for jobs down the line but it would just be worth it for the amount of key people you would meet.  so if you can swallow your pride for a few years, so many doors will be open for you when you are ready to move on.

I dont know, this honestly seems like a fairly good reaction so far from the parents. I've been to Korea many times and dated a few Korean girls, and from my understanding the reaction could have been a lot worse. I was with a friend and his korean girlfriend on the Seoul subway who were innocently holding hands only to have some old korean come up and start screaming in the girls face that she is tarnishing the reputation of koreans by dating a foreigner and is bringing great shame to her family. According to my friend at the time, this was not an isolated incident. The fact that the father hasn't yet killed you, or taken their daughter out of school should be a sign that they are more open than you may think. i think if you look closely at that pic, you can see the vague outline of "michigan" coming through from the other side of the shirt - looks like the spanish is on the back and a black and white "michigan" is on the front.

maybe this has already been mentioned... but can't they get some sort of removable astroturf (or whatever it is..) boards to go over the sandpit whenever the football team is not using it? I know thats what the Miami Dolphins do to deal with sand from the Florida Marlins' infield when the Baseball and Football seasons overlap...???

i was at that game, seated amongst a sea of blue and orange. one of the best games i have ever seen, outside of the 2004 m/state game... needless to say i had no fingernails by the end of that one. great to see some highlights on tape.

concur. something like that irishenvy one would be great. this is the best site for michigan news in my opinion, and would be even greater with a message board facelift.

4 years 24 weeks ago Its still way too early, and

Its still way too early, and one impressive win over a top ten team isn't enough to break Michigan into the top 25. If Michigan can keep on winning the games it should win, and throwing in a few upsets here and there, I would not be surprised to see Michigan jump into the rankings. But at this point a.) its too early b.) there are too many other "better" teams out there that havent lost any games they shouldn't and c.) and as mad magician said anyway, its basketball - who cares - the tourney will sort everything out in the end.

I hope michigan makes it to the tourney. I would kill for a Georgetown/Michigan matchup.

And Michigan should be able to take care of Maryland. What a shitty school in a shitty state.

4 years 24 weeks ago whether this is fact or not,

whether this is fact or not, i would think even the slightest mention of this possibility in the mainstream media cannot help us in recruiting. if you were a recruit considering michigan and then heard this, it would have to make you waver a bit. maybe im wrong, I hope I am wrong, but this is not good - even if its completely false.

4 years 25 weeks ago Slippery Rock

what about delaware? i have no idea if they are open or not, but wasn't there some chatter about them trying to schedule a game with delaware? would be cool to see two winged helmet teams going at it. princeton maybe?

or for throwback sake, how about slippery rock?

Georgetown. Because it's the greatest school on earth, has one of the longest college fight songs, is in America's safest city, and the Patriot League boasts some of the greatest offenses in the country (Fordham, Lafayette).

thanks for the info... wasn't quite sure about the broadcasting situation (I guess I could have looked it up...), but I'm a bit more relieved knowing that its going to air on ABC now.  Praying to god I get that game, or my Japanese neighbors are going to be in for quite a surpirse at 2 am when I am screaming like a mad hen at my computer in profane english.

4 years 37 weeks ago re: Japan

I have been living in Japan the past three years, and getting any sort of college football out here is TOUGH. As far as bars in Tokyo goes, your best bet is Legends Sports Bar in Roppongi, right next to Hobgoblin. They do show college football games, but most of them are not live, with the exception of a few. They weren't even playing the rose bowl game live when I went a few years back.

Your other option is ESPN Gameplan online, which offers some (but not all) of the Michigan games (though I'm not sure how thats going to change with the Big Ten Network). The quality is actually pretty good (much much better than slingbox or sopcast, and it is what i have been using the past two years to watch games live). Its about 130 dollars for the entire season, and last season they had about four UM games live, including Michigan vs. Ohio State. When you sign up, make sure to sign up as an International User. The format has kind of changed this year so I'd be interested to see what games will be up there. Link here: http://proxy.espn.go.com/ncf/gameplan/index?status=viewpage

However, as Brian said, the single best way to get UM games over here is via MGoVideo. While you won't get to watch the game live, you can download beautiful HD broadcasts and then burn them onto DVD and watch them on your TV. The site does not give away any scores or results, so if you can manage to keep away from the internet or friends who may spoil it for you, you can download them game from them without knowing the result and watch it almost as if it were a live game.

Anyway, hope that helps.
