|17 weeks 2 days ago||Setting aside speculation on||
Setting aside speculation on whether McQueary was a victim in the past......I understand your line of reasoning, but I can't say I agree that McQueary is a victim in that situation. Except maybe in the loosest sense of the word. I'm sure what he saw scalded his eyeballs and his psyche.... bad stuff does that. All the more reason that it needed to be stopped. And I'm not saying go in there and kick the crap out of Sandusky... that's more violence the child would have experienced...I'm just saying walk in there and say "Hey what's going on?" I bet that would have halted the whole scene.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||I respect what you are saying||
I respect what you are saying about the victims of sexual trauma. They stay silent for a lot of reasons. We're not talking about the victim, we're talking about McQueary. I agree..... glad McQueary did as much as he did, he deseves credit for it..... but what he did was a bare minimum. I don't agree that qualifies as heroic. A child was raped, he could have stopped it. He didn't. No amount of whatever he did afterward changes the fact that he didn't help that child when he could have.
Was McQueary a victim of sexual trauma in his past? I can see how that would muddy his thought process right at the moment.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||There's no excuse for||
There's no excuse for McQueary's inaction. You see something like that happening to a child you do something to stop it immediately. If I were in McQueary's shoes and didn't stop it I'd feel like an accomplice. Needed time to process what he saw... blah blah bullshit. If you need to spend time thinking about what you should do in that situation there's something wrong.
I've got kids, and if something bad was happening to one of them and I wasn't around I hope someone would step in.

Biggest downer Wilton Speight? Cumong. 6-0, 11/2 TD/INT, currently 28th in the country for total QBR. Maybe cut him some slack! Rudder force wasn't too bad....I wasn't trying to maintain or manuver, just coming down hill to the airport. First engine out that was real and not training, hence the shakes I guess.
|32 weeks 3 days ago||Forgot a couple||
Had to dead stick a single engine airplane onto a gravel runway in Iliamna, Alaska. Some part of the throttle linkage had come loose....engine ran fine, just couldn't reduce power so I could slow down and land. So I shut down the engine, slowed down per Newton, and glided (glid?) her onto the runway. If the Moms say this one doesn't apply in this thread because I voluntarily killed the engine, I'm OK with it.
The right engine quit on me in a twin engine airplane about 4 or 5 miles from the airport I intended to land at, at about 4500 ft. I guess if an engine is gonna go, that's a helpful time for it to happen. Again.... Moms...maybe this one doesn't count because I don't really feel like I almost died. The thing that makes me think maybe it does count is I got the shakes a little bit after I got on the ground.

Hit a barbed wire fence late at night on a snomobile at speed. Flipped me off the back of the sled, the barbs tore the throat out of the raised collar of my coat and the neck gaiter I was wearing underneath it, and dug a trench in my helmet. I hit the ground with my hands at my neck thinking I was done...gonna bleed out on the snow. Barely got a scratch. I still don't know how when I think of that neck gaiter and my coat.
Got into a head-on collision on my way to take the SAT. I don't remember any of it from well before the accident. The car I was driving looked like Optimus Prime did a tap dance on the front of it. I was told I wasn't wearing a seat belt, and that my chest hitting the steering wheel had completely collapsed the whole steering column... had a half circle shaped bruise on my chest and that's it. Other driver wasn't hurt at all.
Numerous stories of absolutely assinine things I used to do in a car when I was a bulletproof fool. A child really, being so stupid. It embarasses and shames me while at the same time gives me goose bumps. I think about it now and pray to God that I didn't genetically transmit any of that kamikaze bullshit to my sons.

Met Mrs. Circle K in a class at Michigan. She says she knew right away. I believe her but I still sometimes think uh....really? I did not know right away. I was careless and immature, she was too much under Momma and Daddy's thumb. We broke up when I moved to Alaska for a job. Six years later and much water under the bridge we reconnected....under some really horrible circumstances actually. But I was no longer careless and immature (well maybe still a little immature), and she had grown into being her own person. I still didn't know she was "the one". My beliefs say God helped us get it right....what that means is when the little blue "+" sign popped up we made it official. I know that sounds kinda "oh shit" horrible... I did say "oh shit" and I did feel horrible.... but really I was just a special kind of idiot when it came to marriage type commitments....needed the boot in the ass I guess. We've been married 9 years now and there are no words that can adequately express how thankful I am for her. I would not change or trade one second of it. In 50 years when I'm getting ready to move off this mortal coil I know I'll still feel the same.

I've had a 20' Four Winns bow rider since 2004. I've used her on Lake St. Clair. Take her up to the channels near Algonac... if the wind isn't out of the south it's just like lake water in the channels in terms of chop. She's a great inland lake boat, does OK on St. Clair, can trailer it where ever, whenever. Easy to store, easy to work on. If I could only have one boat, I'd pick this one because it fits more situations, isn't stuck in a boat well, can pull tubers/skiiers. I wouldn't want to go any smaller on Lake St. Clair though.
So... all that being said... the family outgrew the bow rider, and I did get a little sick of pounding the waves on St. Clair. Bought a 30' Sea Ray Sundancer in March. Can't speak to it directly because I haven't had her out yet, but it's certain she's more suited to the big lakes. And plus now my wife can stop carping about there being no bathroom. I bought used, older model... no need to spend big money. Good boats can be found in the off season.
Co-sign on the "get a survey". It will cost you $400, but it is well spent money. Also co-sign on the two engines....see sawing the wheel in the Four Winns out on a bigger lake gets old. Co-sign yet again on "maintenance the hell out of it in the off season". YouTube, Google, etc. is a major help here. If you are handy at all you can reduce the cost of ownership, learn a lot, and it is satisfying to maintain her yourself.
Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship has tons of information.... I think it is in it's 67th edition. Good resource for any boater, noob or not.
Never once have I ever regretted a single dime spent boating. That old saw about the two best days, buying then selling....whatever. Dude should have bought a camper I guess.

My comments weren't intended to be exciting. A fellow MGoUser asked for clarification, so I gave it.
Not that I require confirmation from others to validate what I'm saying about my own game day experience, but the issues i talked about are far from unique. Many other Michigan fans feel the same about those things. Some don't... those people are serious too. Your implication that the ordinary nature of my points detracts from validity makes no sense.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||A few gameday things: Trying||
A few gameday things:
Trying to create "traditions" as opposed to traditions forming and/or continuing on their own. The uniformz money grab in all of it's guises (alternates, un-retiring numbers, messing with the helmet). Advertising in the concourse areas. The seat cushion farce. Gimmicky halftime "shows". I'll throw in the faint rumblings about a mascot, and the abomination that was the halo. People messing with pagentry and traditions that do not need to be messed with, let alone messing with them for the sake of making more money.
One example from this past Saturday.... my son and I step out at halftime to get a pretzel and something to drink. There's a TV above the concessions area, and on it is nothing but advertising. No game stats, no highlights, no footage of the halftime show (which... on this Saturday was probably a good thing... my 6 yr old son.."Dad, why does that lady sound like that?").
Throw in escalating ticket prices juxtaposed with weak non-conference opponents, the wasteland that will be our home schedule every other year now, and the ticket games going on between the AD and the students (both in football and basketball), and it just looks more and more like the AD wants to bank on our love and loyalty to Michigan, but doesn't want to give any back to us in return.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||I never thought it would||
I never thought it would cross my mind, but this year for the first time I've actually thought about not renewing my season tickets. It isn't much about the money (although it doesn't help paying thousands for the home slate we'll be getting), it is more about the feel of the game day experience now. The way the AD is running things, it doesn't feel like they care about us. Maybe they never did, and it's just now becoming more apparent in the "business model, branding" environment.
Memories of attending games with my brother while in school, and attending now with my son, and making new memories tailgating with friends made at football games over the years are a huge part of the reason I keep my season tickets. The AD has nothing to do with that stuff, so it will be enough to keep me around... but for how long?? Don't know.
My situation obviously isn't unique. Could be that it is becoming wide spread. Pretty sure that is a good sign that the AD is doing it wrong. If we were winning games this conversation wouldn't be happening, you say? You might be right that the conversation wouldn't be happening out in the open, but I bet long time season ticket holders would still be quietly letting their seats go as the corporate branded world increases it's hold on what used to feel like an experience about the game, not about the money to be made from the game.

Lead goes back and forth all game, but we get down a couple possessions late, have to foul, IU ends up winning by 7. I would be happy to be wrong.
Michigan fouls less than anyone in college basketball. It will be interesting to see how that plays out at Assembly Hall. Really it's a shame because IU is a great team without getting a free throw advantage. Would be nice if we could just watch these two teams go at it. If you take the refs out it's a toss up.
|4 years 3 weeks ago||Has IU played a team with as||
Has IU played a team with as many offensive weapons as we have? Sorry, dumb question, no one has as many weapons as we do. Whatever the matchups, say IU takes away two options, we still have three other players that can rack 20, especially if you look at McGary and Horford as McGarford. If Burke can't score on Oladipo, he can impact the game by taking care of the ball and distributing. I think he is a mature enough player to recognize that situation and play well without pressing to score.
I wouldn't be surprised if Morgan gets into the game. Wouldn't be Morgan at 100%, but that's 5 more fouls to throw at Zeller and the homie refs. If McGarford gets in early foul trouble, maybe we see Morgan.... Morgarford. Our bigs can prolong their availability with respect to fouls if they will just accept Zeller is going to get his, and just try to contain him some, not shut him down. We don't need to shut him down to win.
Our 2 (or 3) bigs D on Zeller, Hardaway on Oladipo. Burke +10 assists. Lite Rob, Canadian Bacon, and Morgarford combine for 50-55 points. Run Horse. Win.

I don't tend to use the terms myself, and I'm not saying I'm overly fond of them. I was just saying I get sick of people complaining about them, when I feel pretty sure the people complaining about them agree with the premise that underlies the term. Kind of hypocritical.
Regarding the non-rhetorical question..... as you say, moderators is an answer. Also, the mod function available to all of us is an answer. Since the answer is not Brian, I don't take negging posts to be support for your claim that the terms are prohibited on MGoBlog.

|4 years 4 weeks ago||Sure, that's possible. I'm||
Sure, that's possible. I'm just saying I don't think it's likely. Plus, remember the context: crying in response to Green committing.
I never have been part of the process, but I wonder if you're overblowing the relationship part a bit. How can the coaches become that bonded to kids when a large portion of them don't even end up coming here? They'd be an emotional wreck. Some detachment would be a good thing, I'd think. And how much time do they really spend with these kids before they get on the team? I don't really know the answer, but when it comes to forming some kind of heart wrenching bond I'm guessing that kind of time doesn't get spent until they are on the team.
As far as the process being over... yeah looks like it is over for Green, but I don't think recruiting is ever over for a college football coach.
So what if Hoke did cry? I don't think less of the guy. I'm just saying I don't think he really did.

I understand what you're saying, but let's not over state what this really is. As of right now, a highly regarded high school football player is coming to the University of Michigan to play football. That is awesome, I'm stoked, but right now that is all it is. And Brady knows that way better than any of us do.
Green is coming to a position of need, but he isn't coming to a program that needs saving, or a team that doesn't have any other options at the position. He isn't coming to a coaching staff on the hot seat. If Green hadn't come to Michigan, I don't think Brady Hoke would have shed a single tear.
I hope Green blows up, leads our team to a ton of wins, and blows the doors off all the record books. After that, or even after a less storied career where Green leaves as a senior who left it all out on the field every game.... maybe then Brady Hoke might shed some tears, but for totally different reasons than crying before the guy ever puts on the uniform.

While that is the politically correct thing to say, we've already beaten two B1G teams by over 20, and another one by 15. MSU is better than any of those three, but I can see us running them over on our court and theirs. Our guys will be focused and ready to light it up. I'd gladly take a one point win at Breslin too, but I think beating them by 10 or more isn't far fetched.

|4 years 8 weeks ago||The results on the field are||
The results on the field are an acceptable way of judging a coaches performance with respect to an individual game.
B- for Borges because I thought he could have done a better job of being creative about getting Denard the ball in space, and because we lost.
I agree the players make (or don't make) the plays. Coaches have to put players in the best position to make plays. Mattison chose to be aggressive, I would have done the same thing. The results for the D were half good, half bad: front played pretty well but ultimately needed to make one or two more plays and didn't, and the secondary got lit up. Sounds like a C to me.
|4 years 8 weeks ago||- Al Borges..... I'll give||
- Al Borges..... I'll give him a B-. First two drives an F, but he came out of it. I would have preferred more plays to get the ball to Denard in space. And I wonder why Funchess was bascially non existant.
- Lewan.... Great job against Clowney. Wish he could stay another year, but CHA CHING is pretty loud.
- Gardner..... made some great throws, and some great plays with his feet. He missed 6 wide open receivers, at least two of those on 3rd down plays that would have resulted in 1st downs. Felt like he hung on to the ball too long at times. Looking forward to seeing what he can do next year with full focus on being a QB.
- Gallon.... slot ninja turned into stud. Played fantastic.
- Mattison....I'll give him a C because his secondary got lit up, and at the end of the day that's on him. Pick your poison though: blitz and hope your guys get there in time, or sit back and get nickle/dimed. I was glad he was aggressive. Our D line crashed in on the QB a lot, and almost made enough plays at the end to win.
- D Rob.... looked good as a RB. Wish they'd have got him the ball out in space more. Would have been interesting to see him return a kick. Love that kid, miss him already. I hope he goes to a good team that can use his talents, probably situationally. Hard to see him being an every down player, but he has been proving people wrong his whole career.

One might argue Michigan is the 2nd most profitable brand in spite of David Brandon, and not because of. Certainly there was a lot to work with there before he showed up. One might also argue some things are worth more than money. That a program could reach a point at which incremental profits don't mean a whole lot. Lastly, one might argue that plans for improvements to the facilities predate David Brandon.

Burke has been awesome, Stauskas lights out, GRIII living up to his hype, and the three headed Morgan/Horford/McGary monster is definitely getting the job done. Hardaway has been great at times, mediocre other times. Defense sometimes seems lacking..... I don't have stats for it, just from the eyeball test.

|4 years 10 weeks ago||I've got nothing against||
I've got nothing against night games.... love 'em. UTL the First was awesome....but more because of the spontaneuous things that happened on the football field than for anything else. I've got nothing against honoring Tom Harmon....Michigan football icon, appropriate to honor him. My own opinion is having no one wear his jersey number ever again is more of an honor to Harmon. Letting someone wear the number is more an honor to whoever gets to wear it.
What makes me angry is the mentality behind this statement:
We have more in store for this game than the initial night game and will work hard to create many WOW moments.
How could anything scripted ever qualify as "more in store" than the way UTL 1 unfolded on its own? And working hard to create wow moments is just plain working too hard. Those things happen on their own, or they don't. I understand traditions evolve. I have no problem with that when the evolution is organic.
|4 years 10 weeks ago||That might be true. Or it||
That might be true. Or it might be true that some of us on here have experienced tons of wow moments that were purely spontaneous, and know the difference. Some on here might remember decades of Michigan football tradition that arrived on its own because of what it inherrently was. Not because it was managed, scripted, sculpted, produced, put in front of a test group, and then stuffed in your face. Michigan football tradition is genuine because it is the opposite of those things. I'm not an old guy, but the artificial base of this type of stuff pisses me off because it is so fake and so unnecessary.
|4 years 10 weeks ago||Why does the man who holds||
Why does the man who holds the highest position in our athletic department need to be told that WOW moments are not something you manufacture? They just happen. We don't need to try so hard to artificially make something that happens on its own in our stadium every year.
