| 17 hours 7 min ago | Part one of the rule... |
says that it's interference if the attacking player's presence impairs the goaltender's ability to defend his goal. I was surprised they called it, but I think the call was the right one in the technical sense. |
| 17 hours 54 min ago | I do agree that technically the call was correct. |
But that's not the way people are used to seeing the rule applied. He was screening Howard with both feet squarely inside the crease (at least for a second, which I'm sure is when the referee went from looking at the action within the circle over to Howard and the slot), so it's tough to feel sorry for him, but I doubt very much that even the Wings on the ice felt they would get that call. |
| 18 hours 55 min ago | I feel like there's an NFL |
I feel like there's an NFL replacement referee joke to be had there somewhere, or at least would have been ten months ago. |
| 18 hours 58 min ago | I think it was too. |
But only seeing it twice and not seeing the referees head/back referees position is going to make me hedge a bit on saying anything for certain. Again, I agree (and maybe "questionable" was the wrong word) like I said above, Franzen was almost defenitely "defenseless" by the common interpretation and boarding was probably the correct call. |
| 19 hours 6 min ago | The no-call there was questionable. |
With the way they've been calling stuff, Franzen almost definitely fits the "defenseless" critera in the boarding rule. I don't know why NBC is assuming people are confused about the no-whistle, but calling boarding in that situation was probably the correct thing to do. |
| 1 day 9 hours ago | This should be a posbanged post. |
ULL is one of the better mid-majors of the past decade; them beating LSU is probably more impressive than Michigan beating Cal with Henderson hurt. I didn't get to see much of the Ann Arbor or Baton Rouge regionals, but I'm hoping to catch up in the next few days. |
| 1 day 21 hours ago | UCLA decided this time yesterday... |
that they were interested in winning the regional. The difference in their batters between game one v. UAB and the first five innings of the IPFW game and the last two in addition to their last two games is completely absurd. They had scored five runs and given up six in their first 13 innings. They've scored 31 and given up four in the last 16 they've played. |
| 3 days 40 min ago | Toronto is definitely first in that group. |
But it's pretty much the Wings and Canadiens and then the other four. Not winning a cup in the expansion era is a big knock on their tradition relative to Detroit and Montreal. What does Boston have? Two Cups in the seventies? Orr>Hull? |
| 3 days 1 hour ago | Maybe. |
But it's not like five of the Original Six have been excellent since 1942 and they're the outlier. If they have less tradition than Boston, NYR, and Toronto, it isn't by much. |
| 3 days 1 hour ago | I have nothing but respect... |
For the Blackhawks as an organization, and "lacking tradition" is pretty ridiculous, but the United Center was damn near impossible to fill, at least the times our teams needed to sell 300 section blocks. Unless the Blues or Wings were in town, you pretty much ate the cost of the seats. I'd also add that there are a ton of fair weather fans that all claim to be lifelong fans despite lacking basic knowledge about team history or hockey in general. The real question is whether there are more than other "long dormant" teams recently finding success, and I have no way of knowing that. |
| 3 days 2 hours ago | Good to hear. |
Without Henderson, Cal isn't a very good team, none of the other pitchers on staff are good enough to give Michigan and their excellent lineup much trouble. I'd be watching but I'm currently at the Louisville regional wandering around their campus until four. No bars within walking distance of athletic campus is bad form, Louisville. |
| 4 days 17 hours ago | Derp. |
That was his IIHF Word Championship title, and I hadn't even considered that he would be older than 19 since I started by looking at another table...Long story, but anyway, anyone on Canada's roster for both tournaments would have won both, but obviously Sakic wouldn't have been on both rosters. To atone with some more, anyone on both Czech Republic's rosters in 2001 would have it. Same with 1989 USSR and 1978 and 1979 USSR. 1997 Canada would also fit the bill. |
| 4 days 17 hours ago | Pam redeemed herself. |
I didn't like where her character was going at all this season, but her exit interview and the surprise for Jim brought her back around, I thought. Still upstaged by Jim's last interview, although that could very well just be gender differences and ease of identification talking. Agree on Michael. Creed and Erin were perfect for the finale, and for some reason I loved Dwight's line about allowing Jim and Pam to stay in his barn. All in all, it was a finale, and wasn't as good as Michael's sendoff after the Dundies, but then again that was one of the better sendoffs I can think of. They seemed to promise nothing more or less than "satisfying" and I thought they hit that, for sure. |
| 4 days 22 hours ago | Two player of the year candidates in Ann Arbor... |
in Romero and Henderson, who were named to the semifinal, top-ten list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Those two might very well be the most interesting individual matchup in any of the sixteen regionals. |
| 4 days 22 hours ago | From what I can see... |
Magnus copy/pastes but doesn't use the link button when posting the thread. That works for me, although I'm usually on my browser on my phone, and I don't know that a majority do it either way. That's possibly the difference, though. |
| 4 days 23 hours ago | Fetisov... |
and any of the other (similarly aged) USSR players in at least 1978 did it, as did Sakic and Canada in 1994 (at least, I didn't check back further than that team). No American could have done it, since the USA hasn't won an IIHF World Championship since 1960 and the World Junior's didn't start up until 1978. |

Tribe has spoken. FWIW I didn't get the humor either, and with 190 views in about a year on YouTube, I'm guessing a sizeable percentage of views in the last year came from this post. |
| 5 days 20 hours ago | I have a problem that... |
he's a very good player not in a Red Wings jersey, but it is really disingenuous to say he's a sellout when the Wings got him on a one year deal, from another elite team no less. Holland couldn't offer Hossa as much as Chicago did, and Hossa went to Chicago. That's what free agents do. |
| 1 week 23 hours ago | Was that in the DII days or more recently? |
They're a good team (though not without their issues) with all but two returning from last year's 45 win team that was one game away from the tournament. They have two very good pitchers by Summit League standards, a solid slapping corps and two girls with a lot of power. I like the Louisville matchup a lot better than a hypothetical Michigan matchup, and if the pitching comes to play they can stay in a game with Louisville, UCLA or UAB. Headed down to Louisville for the first time this Friday, and I'm probably more excited than I would be for any other sporting event, Rose Bowl and a Stanley Cup final included. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | I completely agree with your last paragraph. |
That's how I was looking at it, and I think that's the right way to look at a regional. If the question had been "is this a tough regional for Michigan" then I would completely agree about Cal being the most important factor. Henderson is healthy now, by all accounts, and will be a really tough draw. She gave an interview last year that will stick with me for a long time, funny stuff. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | OT- What is this guy thinking? |
Bad idea for a thread, dropped the OP to zero for a month for thread starting purposes, put a poster in the negative for calling the president names. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | I don't think AA is bad at all... |
Cal is a good team, but Valpo is pretty much terrible (one of Detroit's five wins was Valpo) and CMU is a generic MAC tournament champion that Michigan already beat 11-0 earlier this season. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | There with... |
Louisville UAB Some bigger names. Can't wait to see the scouting reports and maybe some tape from this year to see how the matchups look. |

at IPFW. Can't wait to see what happens tonight. Hope for a good draw for the Mastodons and a top eight seed for M. |

or small theater on campus I won't complain at all, they shouldn't get faulted for that. Howeva, apparantly there was some talk about getting a room at Buffalo Wild Wings, which...yeah. If they're not here because they're at a glorified bar, that wouldn't be so cool. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | They're not back yet. |
And now their coach is thinking about stopping somewhere to watch the show, which kind of makes my two hour round trip up to a Michigan party store kind of a big waste of gas and cash. |

Maybe nothing later, maybe a lot, I have no idea. |
| 1 week 2 days ago | Congrats (on the last part). |
That really is awesome. |
| 1 week 2 days ago | I even bought it once. |
Especially stupid because it was for making Old Fashioned's, where you really can just use a small sugar cube and a few drops of water. That was just after my 21st though; I bought a whole bunch of weird shit I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. |
