I'd probably use better/different praise than "great" but after everything else plus the excerpt from 247 that Don posted a couple days ago I'm completely on board with psychotic. LSA and I were talkng about JH today and "lunatic", "unhinged", and "not all there" were used in glorious contexts.
I literally cannot contain my excitement, friends that have no interest in Harbaugh/Michigan have been hearing from me and they're probably sick of it.
|7 hours 15 min ago||I'm not taking away from the||
I'm not taking away from the job the Stanford coaching staff did, and I agree to an extent about Gardner, but Luck deserves a huge amount of credit for what Stanford was offensively his junior and senior years. My comment was also meant as at least a little tounge in cheek; a player like him makes a staff looks good, which should be pretty obvious with Denard or Woodson or Long or any other exceptional, All-America type talent M has had over the years.
Luck being a four star is a gigantic failure for the scouting sights, but I do agree Gardner has five star physical attributes.
|7 hours 27 min ago||You're right, but only||
You're right, but only because you're using a correct definition and not whatever ridiculous co-opted version led to 360 degree entitlement. If Harbaugh was hired because of his diploma and playing career there would be a revolt; him growing up living and breathing maize and blue and being an all time M great as a player is just a bonus on top of him being one of the best coaches in the game.
Harbaugh will display excellence in every facet of his job and love Michigan, which is pretty spot on to describe the phrase that Yost and Bo used (I'm sure along with many other Michigan Men).
|7 hours 36 min ago||So what you're saying...||
is we need upperclass Andrew Luck? If so I agree.
(All credit to Harbaugh and Roman and the rest of the staff for recruiting and coaching him but he was an extraordinary talent that was going to lead a monster offense somewhere.)

I really hope nobody takes this as political or saying anything about the war, but if you look Baghdad Bob up he's got a kind of crazy life story where he went from low level party guy to being on TV in front of who knows how many people almost instantly. The US captured him and released him almost immediately because nobody thought he had any insider info and he ended up working as a talking head for a big news outlet in the middle east a couple years later.

Also, Dwight did say all of those things but at different times. He said "I never get sick. And I don't celebrate any major holidays" in 3/12 Traveling Salesman and used "jackhammer" as an adjective to describe himself in 3/14 The Return.
Drunk recency bias applies times one hundred but I'd go with a Harbaugh quote or "all I've got is beef with those that violate me, I shall annihilate thee" as the tagline, although Harbaugh is coming back from Cali Cali.

|1 day 12 hours ago||You did say recent, and 1994 isn't all that recent.||
Yost was the most successful coach in M history and didn't use winged helmets, Crisler invented them and didn't put stickers on his player's helmets. 2/3 Heisman winners didn't have helmet stickers and neither did 11/11 national championship teams. No disrespect to Bo, but I wouldn't say helmet stickers were vital to M success and I wouldn't call Moeller's teams recent.
My dislike is just aesthetics so I won't pretend to tell anyone how to think, but I love seeing the wings, stickers not so much.
Also, not that it's important but the Denard picture was taken at the Sugar Bowl in Hoke's first season.

|2 days 7 hours ago||But emotional ties to college||
But emotional ties to college are just as personal as "winning at the highest level" and anything in the NFL's favor. The only two nearly objective factors are job description and salary, and in a situation where M is looking to write a big enough check those two are a wash (assuming he would get a lot of personnel control in an NFL deal). There's not a way to quantify "coaching Tom Brady" vs "office in Schembechler Hall" or any of the other choices a coach with offers from both would need to consider.
If all we're talking about is why there's a perception that NFL is a step up then I agree with what you're saying in this comment, but that's not what was being argued everywhere in the thread.
|2 days 16 hours ago||My point is that with equal||
My point is that with equal job titles and equal pay, there's nothing objectively better about being an NFL coach than there is being a college coach. I definitely understand the widespread perception that one job is superior to another, but without knowing how Harbaugh thinks that's not really relevant.
To put it another way, I'd be living a completely different life than Warren Buffet if I had his resume and bank account, but good luck explaining how a Manhattan penthouse and an island in the Caribbean are objectively superior to his place in Omaha if that's what he enjoys.
|2 days 16 hours ago||I don't think it's obvious at||
I don't think it's obvious at all. He'll have, for all intents and purposes, the same job description (assuming the rumors about him wanting more front office control are true) in either place next year and it looks like Michigan has offered him more money than an NFL franchise will.
Anything beyond that is 100% personal preference and there are arguments to be made either way, none of which make a difference unless we know what Harbaugh thinks.

I've had two bottles of his Sauvignon Blanc (2012, 2013) and gifted the Cabernet Sauvignon (2009) to my best friend over the summer, but he hasn't opened it up yet. The Sauvignon Blanc is the best I've had from California, although I don't pretend to be a wine expert and I almost always go for a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand anyway, and generally prefer Chilean before buying from California.
I know you're in/close to Ann Arbor, they have the Sauvignon Blanc at Plum Market for twenty bucks (the Cabernet retails at $112 but I supposedly got the last bottle in Ann Arbor in March for $99). Definitely worth a try, it was great with shallots and also just with cheese, olives and bread another night.

I was also wondering where a debate would go on this. Michigan has a lot more money and a more successful athletic department than Minnesota or BC, but to use one anecdotal example Minnesota is getting student season football tickets sold because they're tying them to hockey season tickets; that idea wouldn't even be proposed at a Dave Brandon "what's the stupidest promotional idea you can come up with" meeting at Michigan and it apparently worked for Minnesota.
I'm definitely not pretending to be a be-all-end-all expert but I'd put Michigan in the top three jobs and leave it at that. In football is Texas really a better job than USC, or vice versa?

Maybe the wording wasn't the best, but I thought it flowed enough with the second point. I don't think it's automatic that the next coach is an upgrade over Red. I wouldn't say "no, I'd rather keep Red and go .500 than win the conference and go to two Frozen Fours with a new guy". Underperforming would be relative to Red's standard of performance.
That said, if there was a binary choice between firing Red and winning a couple more games or not firing him and losing a couple more, the equation is more than wins per season and should include more intangible variables like what he's meant and what it would mean to have a happy Red around after he retires.

There's a rumor out there that the BTN is paying out $2m to the six BTHC members (Michigan, MSU, OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota). If that's anywhere near true Nebraska could get a team up and running and add the womens scholarships they needed for something in the ballpark of $1m in the red each season, but only because their shiny new basketball arena was built with space for a refrigeration unit. If the team was successful they could definitely get to a point where they made Nebraska money.
For the schools that don't have a way to convert an existing stadium they would need a donation like Penn State got (their arena cost $88m and change) for it to be an option because the startup costs are huge. I don't know what the deal is in the Pac 12 though, there might be a couple schools with basketball arenas that could house refrigeration units or nearby pro teams with existing stadiums.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Some numbers:||
Michigan spends $1.2m on hockey athletes (that's 500k less than basketball but five times what mens soccer costs), and that doesn't include a recruiting budget, coaches salaries, ect. There's the equivalent of 18 full rides to give out each season.
To get a program started the biggest expense is an arena, obviously. I haven't seen anything about ASU but Penn State took $102m to build an arena and get mens and womens hockey started at a D1 level.

Unless you have some sort of inside info I could just as easily state that he needs to stay to make a comfortable environment for a lot of people and quell factions in the AD.
Hoke shouldn't be meddling in the football program after he's gone but it would be a giant failure all around if he wants to stay involved at Michigan and is kicked to the curb.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Jim & John Harbaugh (Sales Pitch)||
It did work at Dunder Mifflin for a while. Will John or Jim want to build tube city? Who will run the Bullets, Bourbon, and Belles game when the AD runs into liquidity problems? So many questions...

I want Harbaugh as much as the next guy, but he's not in the same galaxy of career accomplishments as Babcock. Even for the people thinking he'll come, Babcock is more like hockey Belichick than hockey Harbaugh.

Appalachian State. They hired Red Berenson, Jim Harbaugh, John Beilein and Rich Rodriguez as coaches and the Yost family is allowing them the exclusive right to name their stadium after Fielding Yost.
In related news, the USNTDP is moving to Boone and ASU will be visiting Ann Arbor for the 2015 home opener.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||That's only about a years||
That's only about a years base salary for Berenson and about half his total compensation. I'd bet the AD would either pay Tech the whole buyout or at least front it for him if they think Pearson is the guy.

As for Hoke, jobwise I don't know what the incentive is for him to be a coach somewhere else. He's at his dream job right now and if he loses it he'll have enough money that he doesn't have to work again.
I know he puts a lot of emphasis on helping mold young men, but maybe Michigan could give him an outlet for that through the AD at some point.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||I don't think this is really||
I don't think this is really a "devils advocate" piece. Clark being responsible for his current situation shouldn't strip him of his humanity, and recognizing that doesn't diminish what his victims went through in the slightest.
That's what I got out of it at least, and I wholeheartedly agree.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||F. Clark the final nail in B. Hoke's coffin?||
Poster Bergs was right on the money, so I'll just quote him/her.
This situation is truly terrible, but Hoke made the right/only choice and did it very quickly. Another thing to remember, domestic violence is not a football issue. Sadly this is something Schlissel will need to deal with or prepare to deal with in every facet of the university.

There's a process that would have to play out and Clark would be a part of it. It's also possible he's able to keep his scholarship for the rest of the academic year, I believe they would need to go through another process to revoke the grant in aid agreement he signed before the school year started.

At the risk of sounding preachy or overly obvious I think it's natural and appropriate to feel sympathy for Clark. Regardless of what he's done (and the allegations are very, very serious) he's a person just like everyone else. I feel horrible for the victims and hope they never experience something like this again, but I'm not cheering because a person is facing jail time and career altering consequences either.
|6 weeks 10 hours ago||The Gibbons criminal||
The Gibbons criminal investigation was wrapped up months before Hoke was named coach and Lewan was allowed to play a bowl game while the legal system played out (on a relatively run of the mill charge). Stonum was dismissed in 2011, York was dismissed in 2014.
Hoke gets a bad rap on here for his comments about Gibbons, but his discipline record leaves pretty much no doubt that Clark will be gone if the report has pictures and third party testimony.

If the police report contains what this story says it does Clark will be off the team as soon as Hoke sees it.

I would assume Schlissel has the sense to know that domestic violence isn't a football player issue, recent NFL headlines nonwithstanding. I completely agree, and remember that we don't even know what Clark is alleged to have done yet, let alone whether he'll be convicted of it/plea to it. It's very possible Hoke has had some conversations like this with Brandon/Hackett. All the anger and vitriol aside, I think the smartest thing to do with Hoke is let him exit in a way that would allow him to stay connected to Michigan after he's no longer the football coach.
I know nobody is happy with him as a head coach but it seems crazy to ruin any chance for him to stay active with the school/AD in a constructive way moving forward. I think he could have a lot to offer, and that would be flushed with a public mid-week firing with two weeks left in the season.

I doubt it would help much even at a MAC school but once you get to the tier below that just being a competent copy editor and having a decent vocabulary for making these releases would probably help land a job within an AD.
Reading recaps out of the OVC, Summit League, MVC, ect. is downright painful, and it seems like those duties are only one aspect of another job in those AD's most of the time.

If most of the stories out there are even partially true, they deserve whatever realistic punishment is headed their way.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||FWIW...||
Pro sports are allowable OT, it's just assumed Detroit-centric stories are more relevant/worthwhile for taking up space on the sideboard than another city without a good reason. The big pro sports stories are posted regardless of whether they're about the Lions/Tigers/Pistons/Wings. Also a little food for thought, there's a vocal minority of Canadians that post on the site, so anything Team USA might feel a little like a non-Detroit fan seeing Detroit stories, but Olympic and national team stories get posted when there's news.

Gene Chizik's is 24-38 as a head coach without paying sixty grand to Cam Newton's father. He had never won a single coaching award before or after 2010 and his only two head coaching jobs were at a Big XII and SEC school.
He also managed to completely lose control of his team and I'll assume Hoke's graduation rate is much higher unless someone wants to show otherwise.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||He won two coach of the year||
He won two coach of the year awards before coming to Michigan, he had Ball State ranked number 12 and took them to the fifth and sixth bowls in their 82 year history during his six years there. He then went to SDSU and put up a far better W/L record than they had since the early 1990's and won their first bowl game since 1969.
Even if you give him zero credit for 2011 at Michigan he definitely didn't mess up a great season and was awarded coach of the year at the end of the season.

There is still*. A Lack Of Talent to play out.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||I don't doubt Hoke will get||
I don't doubt Hoke will get offers from lower tier conferences. Regardless of what's happened at Michigan he has three conference coach of the year awards, graduates players and can recruit better than anyone else a MAC/C-USA or maybe Mountain West type program will be realistically able to get. He's also the type of genuinely good guy that everyone wants out of the face of their program.
The more interesting thing to me is what Hoke wants to do if/when he's fired. If I were fired from my dream job and didn't have to find another to keep food on the table I don't know how enticing hundred hour weeks and spending all that time on the road would be.

the 8% guaranteed for endowments figure was something I remembered hearing from a poster that's really involved with fundraising for scholarships. I don't know if that's true all the time or if I'm confusing a few different things.
I do agree the number would have to be larger. Expenses are probably a shade north of $2m and the combined revenue of all womens sports (minus basketball) is $971k. Even if the vast majority of that is softball there's still a shortfall of something like $1.25 million when it's all said and done.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||This isn't an exact answer||
This isn't an exact answer but remember that the Ivy's don't allow athletic scholarships, so that takes a huge expense off the books of the AD and either turns it into cash for the school or a financial aid expenditure.
The Ivy's also endow head coaching positions like crazy (I believe 8/8 head football coaches are endowed), which is another way to keep expenses down.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Few things to sort out I guess.||
Is your reply to me in particular or is it to a chain of mod comments?
I'm also a little vague on what standards were violated by a mod, not trying to dismiss your post out of hand, I think all of us welcome thoughtful feedback.
BiSB took down a diary he believed wasn't up to diary standards (I agree with him, FWIW) and posted a reason why in the mod sticky, the author put a similar post up with a freedom of speech tag and it was removed again, and then this thread happened. BIGBLUEWORLD can still post, he didn't have his points taken away or other material unpublished and BiSB didn't make a thread to ridicule him or anything else out of the ordinary. If every mod gave a warning or had a private discussion before taking down every post, this would be a full time gig and the board would be double and triple posts and snowflakes 24/7.
The general rule is to reply to his post in the mod sticky with some reasoning about why the mod's actions weren't correct and BiSB has a long history of being willing to show what his reasoning is and being clear about what the problem is and nothing he's done has been contrary to that.

Basically football players get injured (seek medical attention and are out for at least one day following) at a rate of 37.9/1000 exposures (games participated in). There are also numbers for 14 other sports and practices included, with data from 1988-2004.
