I think I'm missing something in your two posts here. Your last post encouraged someone like the OP to link to a site that passed off info as their own and then you point that out as the problem in your second paragraph here.
The two most important parts of Brian's policy (and the poster saying his policy is not having any moderation is dead wrong, premium info gets the mod edit treatment probably ten times more than an average post) are a) linking to the site and b) leaving value in the original site's reporting.
I don't subscribe to any of the pay sites so I can't comment on how much more info there is in the linked article, but from what I can see the OP followed MGoBlog's policy to the letter.

My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really.

|1 week 2 days ago||The NHL rulebook is different, though.||
Here's the entire entry from the NCAA rulebook:
Going by the letter of the rule, any direct contact with Lamprusso's head has to be a major and a game misconduct. I don't think the hit was dirty as much as just outside the letter of the rule, but that still means it needs to be called. I think it's a pretty interesting discussion to have unless you're not seeing any contact, especially considering that long term we need to sort out how much we're going to allow head trauma to be part of the (legal) game.
|1 week 2 days ago||This is right.||
My bad, I hadn't realized that was number three. It also escalates with each game misconduct being a two game suspension, then three, ect.
|1 week 2 days ago||Maybe...||
But Dana Holgorsen fitting into that category should surprise absolutely nobody.
|1 week 2 days ago||No.||
Game misconduct- thrown out of current game.
Game disqualification- thrown out of current game and suspended on an escalating scale (first in a career is one game, second is two, ect).
I believe anything is up for supplemental discipline but there's pretty much no way that's going to happen with Downing.

|1 week 2 days ago||One guy above said IB4 "think of the children"||
and I think this is where it crosses the line. That just sounds cruel.
|1 week 2 days ago||Thanks for the video.||
I'm a little torn here, because I didn't see any targeting and there's a big height difference, but on the other hand the way the NCAA rules are written that's Downing's problem to worry about and he's obligated to actively avoid Lampasso's head. I definitely didn't see Downing exclusively hitting Lampasso's shoulder (again, it looks like height was the issue here).
They did assess the most lenient penalty allowable for head contact; there wasn't a lesser call they could have made. Combine that with the points of emphasis all being related to head trauma and the way the letter of the rule is written and I have a tough time saying it was actually the wrong call. I'm like 51% on the side of giving the penalty they did.
I'd bet you could put this to a classroom full of officials and end up with no consensus after multiple viewings, but I don't think it's as simple as saying this was categorically incorrect.

|1 week 4 days ago||Again, a down year doesn't||
Again, a down year doesn't change the fact that the conference has four of the most storied programs in the game, plus PSU building what appears to be one of the nicest facilities anywhere. OSU sucks, I think everyone can agree with that, but the BTHC will be a nationally relevant, elite league the vast majority of the time (with a better median level of competition than the CCHA).
|1 week 4 days ago||"This conference is full of weaklings"||
Are you being sarcastic? One down year =/= weakling programs.
The BTHC has the number one and two winningest programs all time, the T1, T3, T7, T9 and T30 most Frozen Four appearances. 69/242 teams in the Frozen Four have been Big Ten teams. In other words, the BTHC averages a Frozen Four appearance (29%), and the Big Ten accounts for 22 national titles, or 33%(!) of all championships.
There have been 258 draft picks out of the Big Ten, including the #1 (Michigan) #2 (Minnesota), T4 (MSU), T4 (Wisconsin) and T26 (OSU) most drafted schools.
The odds that the Big Ten will be this bad for any significant length of time seem astronomicaly low listening to any historical evidence at all.
|1 week 4 days ago||I definitely agree with "more||
I definitely agree with "more [credit] goes to Mel than any of us ever thought possible" but I still don't see the jump from there to being more important to Michigan hockey than Red.
Another thought on the recent dropoff in Ann Arbor, I don't think it's much of a stretch to think that Red had been delegating more responsibility to Pearson before Brandon got into town and demanded head coaching experience. Michigan and Red might have been left to fill a bigger hole than anyone could have expected and Red just hasn't been up for it or found a replacement.
Hopefully we all get to see some salvaging of this season and then maybe hope for the best next year before getting to acknowledge Red at Yost while Pearson starts winning championships again.
|1 week 4 days ago||I think it's more that there||
I think it's more that there are three clicking at once than recruiting a bunch of pitchers. There are only four on the roster, two seniors, no juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. The 2005 roster had one pitcher from each class (no redshirts), which seems to be the ideal distribution roster management wise. Oklahoma with Ricketts and Gascoigne skipped two recruiting classes, but even a football team might do that if Andrew Luck and Cam Newton were both on the roster.
Also Alton, I definitely agree with you on Wagner coming in against Lipscomb because she was backing up both games. I could be wrong but in a three pitcher rotation that's the only way I've ever seen a coach set it up.
|1 week 4 days ago||Question Red all you want,||
Question Red all you want, but I'm not sure I follow how Pearson was more important to the team than Red, especially when you dial time back and Red's age isn't as big a factor. Red is responsible for every facet of the program and every facet was very good or better for a lot of years.
I don't deny we're getting validation that Pearson was more important than a lot of people believed, but I don't get how you're going from there to calling him more important than Red for all these years.

I was at work and couldn't watch, but Betsa taking the top job seems fairly surprising. She looked shaky in Tampa for the opener and I would have put money on Wagner getting the vast majority of the starts. Even so, if she's actually looking better than Wagner and Dresenga I'd say that's a very good development since they're both talented seniors in their own right.
Also just for general info for those that don't know, Lipscomb is a solid mid-major program. While wins over USF, WKU and Lipscomb aren't exactly softball Muppets wins I'd think all should be better than the bottom half of the Big Ten.
|1 week 4 days ago||I'm with you in a general||
I'm with you in a general sense, but I don't think it's any different than any other job, especially in the entertainment industry.
To change gears a little bit, if Wall Street got together and ranked the top 300 prospects coming out of undergrad, is it inconceivable that a guy with a domestic violence charge or a solicitation charge would be invited to their "combine"? Doing a quick search, Chris Brown has sold over two million albums in the US alone after his Rihanna related arrest. Roman Polanski directed The Pianist, won an Oscar and grossed $120m while unable to leave France due to his legal situation arising from drugging and raping a thirteen year old girl in 1977.
I agree it's frustrating, but I don't think the NFL or professional sports has a monopoly on having assholes and/or people who have done messed up things in their life being welcomed with open arms and given multi-million dollar paydays.

At the end of the article the author gets into what he thinks an appropriate punishment would be, and his idea (wind sprints, public apology) revolved around the football team meting out most of the punishment. Shouldn't this be a university issue? As in, if this was a random student government type or fraternity brother, would those organizations be given the power to punish a student for this type of behavior, or would it fall to the university itself?
IMO they need to be referred to whatever campus disciplinary authority Auburn has and let their punishment be handled that way. Maybe banning them from certain buildings or common areas while this woman finishes her degree and whatever other standard probation there is for code of conduct offenders.

Even with a few terrible years recently, he's still winning at an above average rate for Iowa (.575 to .530), and brought Iowa their first win in a BCS bowl since 1959. He also took them to 12 of their 26 bowl games, had three consecutive top ten finishes (which Fry never accomplished) and was national coach of the year at one point.
I'm not saying Ferentz should be a model of 21st century football strategy or that Iowa shouldn't fire him, but he's got a much better resume than Beckman (and a lot of other coaches out there).

|2 weeks 3 days ago||The comment above is the current MLB rule.||
A rule like that couldn't come from the NCAA side, it would need to come from the NBA/NFL.
Without getting into how big of a cut the players deserve, I do think the NBA adopting either the MLB model (three years or right out of high school) or the NHL model (drafting rights for a future contract and not requiring an agent to be drafted) would help both the college and pro games. As far as the NFL goes, I'm not sure there's a big problem with their draft rules, although the guys that go early should have scholarships waiting for them if they decide to come back to school later, IMO.

The old system was one referee and two linseman, the new system added a referee.
I really disagree that it's too much for an NHL game. One set of eyes to call penalties and get every goal and every pulled goalie is not enough with the transition speed the modern NHL has. Sticking with one referee also devalues good referee qualities in favor of someone with extremely high end skating ability (that's already a necessity in hockey that's not there in football, basketball or baseball). If you're interested here's a USA Hockey manual on the four official system with some diagrams I believe back up my view.

You're right on the major points, just elaborating. Florida had two runners on and sent in a freshman pinch hitter who hit a home run. The press box put the music on and the tractors were coming on the field and Florida is celebrating but Hutch is talking to the umpire. Turns out she didn't report correctly so that gives Florida two outs with runners on second and third, Wagner sent in a high pitch that tipped off the top of the catchers mitt and allowed Florida to steal home.
Extremely odd ending all around.

There's also about a two month stretch where softball is the only ongoing sport that gets any coverage at all. The Final Four is eight weeks away and then we're in for a really slow period before football opens camp.
Personally I wouldn't start an open thread for a run of the mill softball game, but come late April when the March Madness and Spring Game dissections are over it's not like they'll be taking up needed space. There's not even an Olympics or World Cup or anything this summer.

A letter of intent doesn't give the student athlete anything, though. It's only binding on the student athlete, not the school. The financial aid paperwork can't be sent out until July(?) and that's what actually guarantees a scholarship.
To the OP, no, I don't know why a recruit that has the leverage that a Jadeveon Clowney or Terelle Pryor type has would sign a LOI. Obviously it gets more complicated as you move down the scale and I definitely see the benefits for a guy like Russell Bellomy or Berkeley Edwards.

Maybe I used the wrong phrasing and/or source (it was one I grabbed quickly), but Syracuse and Michigan seem like teams that will end the regular season with fairly similar resumes.
Michigan is 68 in RPI, Syracuse is 69. Last week they were 71 and 74, respectivally. I don't think it's much of a reach to say no Syracuse could make a difference for Michigan in the postseason, even if it's just NIT seeding or schedule.

Why did Louisville accept his committment, then? Petrino sat down and offered the kid a spot in this class and the kid accepted.

The Big Ten allows a recruiting class size of up to 28 if you backdate three early enrolees. The issue isn't that the 2015 class is too big, it's that they'll be four scholarships above the total cap of 85.

I'm with you that kids and parents need to do a better job of due diligence, no doubt. I don't think that's mutually exclusive from trying to stop unethical coaching staffs from taking advantage of teenagers though.
Reforms like making the LOI binding on both parties and figuring out a way to cap scholarships based on class sizes or having players that leave count against a scholarship cap in certain cases would go a long way towards making a better situation for the players and to rewarding programs that actually give a shit about their student athletes.

No, I don't think Tom Brady seeks out a highly stressful job with long hours after football, with the possible exception of politics if that's his thing.

I'm not a lawyer either and don't know how much M could save by claiming cause and trying to settle, but that would be a really awful look for the U (maybe not if they fired him right after Minnesota). The PR hit alone would almost definitely cost more than $3m, not to mention it'd be completely outside the norm for coaching fires and would be a pretty shitty thing to do to a guy who was as devoted to Michigan as Hoke was. It could easily affect M's ability to ink good coaches in every sport.
Imagine what the current roster would think if they saw Michigan trying to get out of paying Hoke what he's owed, not to mention the program alums that he had big time support from. It's not a fight worth fighting, even using the most ruthless calculus.

Calderone needs to avoid the hit (and is reminded to in the plainest possible language in the rulebook), I didn't see that as 50/50 or anything other than a reckless hit that warranted a major, although I do agree with calling it boarding and avoiding a mandatory game misconduct/disqualification by calling it hitting from behind. Awful decision that has already cost M one.

|5 weeks 4 days ago||It's pretty simple, really.||
It's pretty simple, really. The demographics in elite hockey skew towards very well off, educated families, especially outside of Michigan, Minnesota and Massachusetts (although it's generally the case in those places as well). An awful lot of elite youth hockey players come from an upper middle class background where tutors and SAT coaches and parents who have been through the education system are common, not to mention all of the other demographic predictors on their side.
There are AAA clubs where it can run $15,000 per year for a U14 or U16 team, and some teams/places it can get significantly more expensive than that. Those dues aren't even factoring in equipment or time commitment from the parents, and most players are playing in spring leagues, going to summer camps and getting at least semi-private coaching in the offseason.
This definitely isn't every elite hockey player, but it's the same reason any sport that costs a lot of money to play will generally be successful at top notch schools.

The United Center is already significantly farther away and harder to get to from Evanston than Allstate is, and the Sears Centre (while even farther away) is probably a much better fit for Northwestern than a 20k+ seat NHL stadium.
As for using their practice facility, I'd bet a lot that the current facility the Blackhawks use (The Edge in Bensenville) has more seating than this new one will. They'll use the new rink to host youth leagues and maybe some Blackhawks Alumni Association backed tournaments and showcases; it won't be a place to play high level games.
