I don't have a 100% non-biased answer, but I don't think getting a nomination is based on anything more intrinsically noble than what you mention here, and making it a partisan election means one of two candidates will win virtually every single time.
Best case, you get six candidates or whatever and they campaign and people listen, worst case the election is decided by an arbitrary factor other than party affiliation, which I believe has little to do with being a regent in the first place.
|1 week 3 days ago||I don't disagree, but my||
I don't disagree, but my point was that going through a regents voting record or sitting in on a library board meeting is unlikely to yield much insight into the person's politics and that's what makes a partisan election so utterly ridiculous.
At the very least if there's a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian and Green Party candidate for judge I can see where their allegance will inform their rulings.
|1 week 3 days ago||Please no :(||
In all seriousness, there are way too many positions decided by partisan elections. I'd venture a guess that the average Michigan citizen's opinion on a state party platform isn't meaningfully correlated with their opinion on how the university ought to be run. Even that doesn't take into account the massive group of people where party affiliation is based on national politics, even further removed from what a regent does.
There are municipalities where a library board election is partisan. Ridiculous, IMO.

|1 week 4 days ago||You're conflating a lot of||
You're conflating a lot of things here. Lying (or misleading if you want to be generous) to the media about taking your next job is not at all the same thing as lying five times in an official investigation into your team and your conduct as head coach, so Saban, Meyer and Graham aren't in Tressel's category and I think they could/would meet the standard Michigan has.
There's a lot of smoke around Miles and how truthful or not he is recruiting players, but a lot of his worst alleged practices would be illegal by Big Ten rules. I'd defer to an obviously more knowledgeable AD to make the call on how ethical Miles is or isn't.
I 100% wouldn't want Petrino or Franklin, I don't know O'Leary and Price's stories well enough to give an opinion on the spot, and I'll admit I've forgotten what Carroll did or didn't know which would be the deciding factor for him.
I'm pretty sure Leach was cleared of any wrongdoing and almost definitely got the short end of the stick with an entitled parent and spoiled kid on his team. Assuming that's anywhere near true I'd hire Mike Leach if both sides thought he could win here.
|1 week 4 days ago||It's not moralizing elitism||
It's not moralizing elitism to say a head coach at M needs to have character that's beyond reproach as a prerequisite to for the job. I don't think Tressel is beyond redemption in coaching, I just don't think Michigan should be a place where a dishonest coach comes to redeem himself.
A leader doesn't lie, the best can't be all about wins and losses, and if you ask me you're not very heroic or valiant if you're ignoring and then lying about a major part of your job.
Just for the record I'm all for paying whatever a top coach can demand, I don't consider myself emo and I think Mike Hart earned the right to say just about anything he wants after four big games vs MSU.

Can you imagine Denard's press conferences as AD? He could get up there and talk in detail about concession sales at Alumni Field and everyone with an account here would be watching and nodding their heads furiously.
Even better, imagine Denard joining a team at an NCAA tournament. We saw the enthusiasm level for regular season hockey and basketball, but being that fired up in a suit at a field hockey tournament would be a whole new level of awesome.

MBB gets 13 full rides with 5 starting positions, football gets 85 and 15-20 guys are redshirting every year. Hockey dresses 22 and most of them will play or are the backup goalie, I'd say 24 full rides would be more fair and in Michigan's case that would cost about ten percent of the profit the team put into AD coffers.
I agree about baseball, places like Texas or Vandy or whatever shouldn't have a majority of their baseball team paying to attend.

At least for any one institution. The NCAA has scholarship limits set up both for competitive reasons and to make Title IX compliance easier. Michigan couldn't just start making every sport a "head count" (NCAA term for one full ride being one counted scholarship) sport because it would be against Big Ten and NCAA rules and would most likely find the Michigan AD under investigation by the Department of Education.
I agree there should be more scholarship money- most especially for hockey and baseball where those sports make money- but it's a much bigger issue than Michigan choosing to do one thing or another.
|1 week 6 days ago||I don't think that's where||
I don't think that's where the vast majority of the disagreement comes from, though. I think there are people out there who think threads like this cross the line from "reasonable football related criticism" to "let's tar and feather a man because he lost too many games".
The vindictivness has gone over the top. Hoke's not an idiot. Hoke can coach. Hoke has failed at Michigan. All three of those are true; the guy doesn't have to be the worst coach Bo ever saw two point oh to justify wanting him gone.

The mods will take down a diary or send it to the board if there was an error or there's something really obviously wrong with leaving it up, but LSA and I leave all of the editorial judgements abot diaries to Seth, and from what I remember BiSB is also really hands off there. That said, I agree with moving it to the board (whoever did, it wasn't me or LSA). Generally speaking a diary needs to contain some new information and be significant to understanding a subject, and anything that doesn't should probably be a forum topic. There's a reminder about that when you click to create a diary.

Is there something specific you would do with the money not spent on all the facilities (or cut ticket prices below equilibrium, 2014 nonwithstanding)? I agree about all those facilities being ongoing expenses and needing to be sure bills can get paid in 2024 and 2034 before breaking ground, but in practical terms what's the best use of all this cash the AD is bringing in?
My thinking is if you either keep the cash in the AD or write a (in relative terms) fairly small check to the general fund the better move is to spend it within the department, and unless you can get hockey head count scholarships or spend more on football/basketball/hockey players you're left with academic centers and expensive non-revenue facilities.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Brand identity.||
I remember seeing a story, or maybe a WD comment, about how after Brandon took over a previously uncoordinated group of social media pages for various teams almost immediately all had the same format of name and the same block-M avatar/profile picture.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||Brandon's experience as a||
Brandon's experience as a player ended in 1974, and you're probably looking at the same timetable for every AD candidate. I'd say whether he was a starter is about as relevant to being a successful athletic director as his GPA was to being CEO at Domino's. Someone who came up through athletics would be an ideal candidate -and coaching is a good place to start- but coaching doesn't have much to do with how good of an athlete you are. (Beilein played at a DII school with 1,200 undergrads, and Wayne Gretzky has a career losing record as a coach, for two easy anecdotes.)
Brandon having his Bo cred on the first line of his bio says a lot more about his outsized ego, Bo's place in the culture of Michigan athletics, and Brandon's lack of directly relevant experience than anything else.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I don't think it's the same as the football coach.||
I just don't think whether or not Brandon was a starter forty years ago is relevant to how good he is at his job today.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||DB's athletic career.||
Taking a shot like this really weakens a legit argument that Brandon hasn't been a good AD. Do you actually think a faster 40 time along with an extra inch and ten pounds when he was 18-22 would make Brandon a better AD than he is today?
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I don't think there's any||
I don't think there's any disagreeing with your third paragraph. The officials need to make sure that they have those cameras placed correctly and that there are enough angles on the ball that they won't miss anything, especially something obvious like this incomplete pass.
I wouldn't ever advocate intentionally calling something incorrectly, what I would say is that they should need a very high degree of certainty before stopping a player from running into the end zone along with erring on the side of caution. In this case the ball bounced twice and I would have no problem with the official blowing his whistle here, but not at the expense of getting it wrong in the other direction somewhere down the line.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I agree with you in this||
I agree with you in this case, but I think they should be really cautious about blowing a play dead in that scenario. If letting this obvious one slide is a symptom of them taking that approach I think they have it right in the big picture.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I actually think that's the better call.||
If there's any chance it's an interception they should let it play out when you've got one guy running to the end zone. If it's actually an interception you then either have a TD or a M ball on the fifty (or whatever the spot was) with the play blown dead because of the possibility PSU had thrown an incomplete pass.
With the review system in place they should eliminate a scenario where M actually did intercept but didn't get a TD out of it.

|3 weeks 2 days ago||Hoke might not get any Power||
Hoke might not get any Power 5 offers but I definitely think a lower tier program would love to have Hoke as their coach. He's had success at Ball State and SDSU and being a former Michigan coach would probably be a help, no matter what happened with his records here.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoke hang it up because at this point he's already achieved his career goal (HC at Michigan) but I don't think his best option after this season would be Michigan's DL coach.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I agree.||
If he doesn't have a lot of interest in trying to resurrect another program I honestly hope they can find a home for him in the athletic department. Depending on who the next coach is that might have to wait, but I would hope the AD could find something that fit his strengths and allowed him to keep up a relationship with Michigan.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||100% speculation here...||
If Schlissel really is the disinterested-in-sports academic, I have to think the smart move for him is to get someone the regents/donors want and who doesn't make athletics an issue he needs to be constantly involved in. I know it's not even close to the issue, but I have to imagine that somewhere along the line the hiring committee would have made sure he was okay with a non-Ivy AD and I'm sure it's something that he has seen first hand so far as well.
TL;DR version: If I'm Schlissel and don't want to be bothered with athletics I hire someone the people who are engaged in athletics want and let him run athletics.

There's no way to establish what's going on in players minds, especially something like this that probably wouldn't even be a conscious thought anyway.
I also believe that there are about a thousand more relevant issues than Hoke's weight, and that it gets dangerously close to an ad hominem as opposed to discussing anything we see on the field or from behind a podium.

Other than getting the CC: Random Guy posts/repeats in check and doing some quality control, people have been free to post what they want.
Personally, I don't think the boycott is a good idea, and my reasoning isn't centered on supporting players. It's just that I don't think boycotting a kickoff will accomplish anything. I also think it could backfire if it's not widespread enough, especially after the press it seems to be getting in Ann Arbor.

I ran cross for eight years and I could barely get excited to watch the girls team or even my own team if I had come down with a boo-boo that week. Very fun to be a part of, but spectating is a whole other thing.
Still, though, love the sport and I'm obviously happy when Michigan is doing well.

I don't know who banned you or why- it wasn't me and there isn't a way to see- but I've never banned someone over a position they take (that's not just blateltly offensive), and I haven't ever been pressured to make decisions based on that either.
It'll probably be limited to the million "this guy should be the next coach" threads, but I can tell that some of the things brought up here are being listened to.

|3 weeks 5 days ago||I think a couple ideas you||
I think a couple ideas you noted above and we've thought of in the past are good, but this is more about keeping the sideboard clear than keeping every bit of news in a predetermined thread.
There don't need to be eight posts a day giving pros and cons of whatever coach because it pushes threads with more info off the front page (for example the Morris c/o 13 thread or 10 men punt thread). A piece of recruiting news or a new quote from Hoke or Brandon should absolutely get their own threads.

Was planning on doing something similar in the morning. If anyone thinks they have a good suggestion we'll gladly listen in this thread.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||I don't think the NCAA recap||
I don't think the NCAA recap rule is right, although it could definitely be a Big Ten rule or an agreememnt Michigan makes/made with Kentucky.
The other thing about these being exhibitions is that these don't count for a potential redshirt. Redshirting in womens sports isn't as common as, say, football, but it is a good way to evaluate freshman with a semi-real opponent and no risk of burning it.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||The best thing for people||
The best thing for people looking to talk football to do is to create a thread talking about football.
If we end up with a situation where an OL dissection thread turns into a "best way to protest DB" discussion then we'll deal with it as mods, but I think the redundant threads about new coaches or firing everyone are already getting taken down.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Expenses.||
Michigan Football- 110 athletes, $5,303,376 in operating expenses for an average of $48,213 per athlete. Head coach earns in excess of $4,000,000.
Michigan women's track- 122 athletes, $554,490 in operating expenses for an average of $3,577 per athlete. Head coach earns less than $200,000.
There is not a single thing money can buy that's useful to recruiting or winning games that Michigan football goes without for the sake of women's track.

It's also a bit of a funny anachronism/meta joke. In October 2010 the board was overwhelmingly pro keeping RR. As people started changing their minds the CC tag became a "thing" to keep some peace. Hoke has virtually no support here on the board and it's not nearly as controversial to play "who should be the next coach" as it was in 2010.

Are there really many people out there that sincerely doubt Hoke's good intentions and caring for his players? With the shady stuff going on in a lot of places, knowing that my hypothetical son was actually cared for by a staff would be priority one for me too.

I have no idea if this has been considered before (maybe it has and I'm just clueless) but couldn't you give the doctor on either side some way to notify officials that a player needs to come out, kind of like the replay booth does for a replay?

I said there were plenty of easy ways to not give every reporter looking for blood the headline they want.
Brandon more or less wrote a negative story when he could have said a million other, less gas to fire things. That's the issue I have, not that the story wasn't spun to hang someone out to dry other than Hoke.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||You know who else called people Nazi's?||

Hoke is paid the seventh highest salary nationally, Mattison is the fourth highest paid assistant, Nuss is number six nationally and Michigan as a whole is spending the fourteenth most nationally on a football staff.

The team neurologist is Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, and from everything I've ever seen he's a big deal in the field. He's head of the NeuroSports program at M and was the neurologist Team USA took to Sochi. I do think the medical staff messed up somewhere along the line here and I think that's pretty obvious.
But, and it's a big but (lol), Brandon gave every headline writer in the country a prewritten story about lack of accountability at Michigan when he had several other easy options that would make it appear as if someone in the AD were taking some sort of responsibility for an incident that happened at a Michigan athletic event.

I think you're misunderstanding what he's saying. "I doubt that the powers that be would let you get to a point where you're on the ballot" sounds more about getting a party endorsement than anything affecting a sitting regent.
I don't think Brian getting the nod from either major party is particularly likely though, and as an independent the only people he'd be answering to are voters.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||The vast, vast majority of||
The vast, vast majority of people inside an athletic department are going to view things differently than fans do. Football players seem to love their coach that Brandon hired. Every athlete has DB catering to them, because it's his job, with sparkling new facilities and their academics/life being a concern, because it's his job and because he's probably a fairly normal human being.
Brandon needs to go because he's out of touch and mismanages every semi-tough issue that his core base cares about. There is zero confidence that his reputation will enable him to hire a first rate football coach and less confidence that he'd know one if that coach slapped him in the face.
That doesn't change the fact that most of the softball players remember huddling in a tornado shelter in Oklahoma with him and his wife while deadly tornados circled or mean that he's some monster that hasn't ever contributed anything positive to athletes at Michigan.

|4 weeks 2 days ago||I agree with you and it's||
I agree with you and it's definitely a Title IX issue, but it's not something the Big Ten can do on its own. If they just unilaterally say that your sport is now getting 28 head count scholarships instead of 7 equivalency scholarships the NCAA isn't going to let them compete in tournaments and other conferences aren't going to schedule games either.
Again, I agree with you, but realistically this is either an NCAA or maybe Power Five solution at the minimum. The Big Ten can't realistically go it alone on scholarship numbers.

I do think there need to be ways in the US to prosecute egregious cases unrelated to playing the game (like how BC convicted Todd Bertuzzi) but this isn't even close to that malicious. On top of that, there's no way a court doesn't see this as a "football play".
I do think the Big Ten needs to rule on it though. He should have been ejected when it happened and a suspension is probably warranted.

I'd like to see video of a single time Devin took a flagged personal foul hit to the head, left the field and then was brought back in before being cleared by medical staff. If that has happened, that's as bad as what Morris was put through this afternoon.
I've seen every snap Gardner has taken as a Michigan QB and I can't think of one instance like we saw with Morris today.

Comparing a broken foot to a concussion? Seriously?
I'd be interested in seeing video of these "plenty of head shots" like Morris took tonight where Devin was allowed to return before being cleared by the medical staff. If they do exist that's absolutely damming for Hoke and he should be relieved of the authority to make personnel calls tonight.
