The three pronged test, the inclusion of revenue sports, ect., was formed and can be changed without specific congressional approval. In fact, I believe the Secretary of Education could change the current standards without even presidential approval.

I think the big distinction is that Nike isn't interested in Oregon being anything special; Phil Knight is the one with that interest. A quick search doesn't show that Nike has given anything significant to Oregon beyond a standard apparel deal and a few apparel exclusives that seem normal given their proximity.

Knight isn't going to be able to go to a shareholder meeting and justify pouring excessive amounts of money into endorsement deals for a twenty-five member class. Also, I doubt Clowney or Manziel would get any less interest from Nike because they play for South Carolina or TAMU.

If you want to watch a nationally elite team, softball is right there, and it's an added attraction because Hutch probably has limited seasons in the dugout and might be the best coach in Ann Arbor right now. I'm guessing Detroit wouldn't mind quadrupling their population (going from 18 to 3 in the US), doubling their tourism numbers, gaining anything like the downtown area including the tallest building in the country (is there a better downtown in America?) which has two top ten universities bookending it and quadrupling their Fortune 500 HQ's.

Also all of this hypothetically would be happening while drastically reducing crime and adding an unbelievable amount of wealth. It's obvious that any US city with maybe 2-3 exceptions would kill to be Chicago.

The Stanley Cup isn't an NHL trophy. Back in the day, those teams won Cups without playing in the NHL.

It's only since 1947 that the Stanley Cup is (by official agreement) exclusively awarded to the NHL playoff champion, although no non-NHL team had won it since 1926.

Their undergraduate engineering is ranked above Michigan's and they have the number three undergrad business school in the Big Ten.

Kevin Borseth had an absolutely amazing presser rant while he was the WBB coach at Michigan.

I did, as like a sophomore in high school because a girl I liked wanted to go. Movie was terrible and the girl was a waste of time. All around fail.

We're meeting up with another friend of hers at her apartment at Probasco and Clifton Ave, and the girlfriend's dad works within a block of there (he's in the EE-CS department at UC). I don't know if that's the area we're going to, as I can't keep up with their plans, but I'll keep that in mind if we do.

but just on principle I have to agree college is definitely more team oriented than the professional leagues. I'm sure there are plenty of examples to the contrary either way, but the team aspect is a big reason I spend almost all of my time following college sports as opposed to professional.

I give her a hard time because of how little she ever shows. Her catcher thinks her face would look the same after a perfect game or a mery rule loss, and that's definitely not the way I'm programmed in competitive situations. Probably a good attribute for a pitcher, though.

and a few other small differences, I think Driesenga and MGB look alike, style wise. Driesenga has 2-3mph and a couple inches on her, though.

Driesenga needs to bring her A game. I'd say five ASU runs is the cutoff for a good chance for Michigan to pull this out, unless Dallas Escobedo goes into serious beast mode. If that happens, M is in trouble. Thankfully she's not good about keeping balls in the park if you can actually connect with them.

I'm being told that Escobedo will rack up a lot of strikeouts but is susceptible to getting balls jacked out of the park. Hopefully Romero is licking her chops at that idea.

1-0 with their "backup" throwing a two-hitter on 3/2. Ricketts has lost one game all year, somehow losing to Louisville 5-1. After seeing Louisville live at their regional, that game makes absolutely no sense to me and I have to assume Ricketts didn't get to bed the night before or tweaked a muscle or something. They followed that loss with a 9-1 win in five innings half an hour later.

On a side note, she's a freshman and not there yet, but the Nebraska pitcher who threw the win against Oklahoma is going to be really freaking good. Emily Lockman is her name, and Michigan is going to need to keep up their hitting if they want to keep the conference streak going the next three years.

I have a bit of a different interpretation of what happened on that call, but that's neither here nor there. Taken in its entirety, this was an evenly officiated series, which is all I was saying above. Even if you say they totally blew that call, there were other totally blown calls that didn't go the right way for the Wings. I don't think they were perfect, but I thought the officiating was even all around, and they got most of the big calls right.

Shouldn't be bitching on either side, regardless of outcome (pending overtime(s), obviously).

Originally I was thinking the best call would be coincidental minors or maybe a misconduct (no call on it and it didn't look like the right call to penalize either team, at the time at least), but there's a photo out there that appears to show Filppula being slew-footed. Not cool if so, obviously.

BR is frowned upon, but I've never heard a word from Brian on it, and Seth hasn't said anything to me that hasn't been posted on the board. Pretty much the only "strict orders" we're ever under are after Seth posts a warning about Ace Williams on the board or in the mod sticky.

There's a lot of stupid crap posted on their site and a lot of plagiarism (or as close as you can possibly get to plagiarism without it being "plagiarism").

I played everything from house to AA to HS hockey, fourteen years in all. In my experience the best players on the team aren't usually the wealthiest, and I've heard some crazy stories about AAA level youth clubs and what gets the 2-3rd line guys onto teams.

The converse of that is what would happen if, say, the Trouba family didn't have a ton of money. From what I've heard, they'll offer dues cuts that scale to income to allow great players to play for their club without paying what the bottom few players pay. That doesn't cover five new Synergy's and the Marriot room in Toronto, but it still allows for a family with relatively lower resources to afford a spot on the same team.

Maybe lacrosse? I wonder about skiing or fencing.

Hockey has to be up there, but I agree M couldn't fund the team privately. Maybe some of the smaller schools on the east coast could, though.

Growing up playing hockey in Illinois (where the state championship is the Blackhawk Cup) with a bunch of Blackhawk fans, sons of Hawks players and practically no Wings fans, there were like four of us '89's who were die hard Wings fans and for some reason this is the series that got us all talking again after about five years. Hoping for a win tonight so we can have some good times at the expense of all the guys predicting that the Wings "would be lucky to get to five" this series.

Not that Oklahoma can't lose, but it would be a shock in the softball world to see them coming out of the losers bracket. Ricketts is 29-1 this year, their pitching staff is easily the best 1/2 tandem in recent memory and they're scoring more runs than anyone in the country. The closest game they've played this postseason was still a five run victory.

Bought the supplies for tacos and caribou lou out of cups made of pineapples at the pool a few days ago, and now that looks like a dumb decision. OTOH tacos and liquor are rarely a bad combination, and I've always wanted to drink something out of a pineapple.

Michigan pays Hoke a base salary of $300,000 with total compensation at $2.2m, so it stands to reason that Kelly is making a significant amount more than what ND reports as his base salary. I'm sure the sports networks and Adidas pay Kelly right about what they pay Hoke, which is where most of the money in a coaches contract comes from anyway.

But that's not the way people are used to seeing the rule applied. He was screening Howard with both feet squarely inside the crease (at least for a second, which I'm sure is when the referee went from looking at the action within the circle over to Howard and the slot), so it's tough to feel sorry for him, but I doubt very much that even the Wings on the ice felt they would get that call.

But only seeing it twice and not seeing the referees head/back referees position is going to make me hedge a bit on saying anything for certain. Again, I agree (and maybe "questionable" was the wrong word) like I said above, Franzen was almost defenitely "defenseless" by the common interpretation and boarding was probably the correct call.

ULL is one of the better mid-majors of the past decade; them beating LSU is probably more impressive than Michigan beating Cal with Henderson hurt. I didn't get to see much of the Ann Arbor or Baton Rouge regionals, but I'm hoping to catch up in the next few days.

For the Blackhawks as an organization, and "lacking tradition" is pretty ridiculous, but the United Center was damn near impossible to fill, at least the times our teams needed to sell 300 section blocks. Unless the Blues or Wings were in town, you pretty much ate the cost of the seats.

I'd also add that there are a ton of fair weather fans that all claim to be lifelong fans despite lacking basic knowledge about team history or hockey in general. The real question is whether there are more than other "long dormant" teams recently finding success, and I have no way of knowing that.

To atone with some more, anyone on both Czech Republic's rosters in 2001 would have it. Same with 1989 USSR and 1978 and 1979 USSR. 1997 Canada would also fit the bill.

in Romero and Henderson, who were named to the semifinal, top-ten list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Those two might very well be the most interesting individual matchup in any of the sixteen regionals.

No American could have done it, since the USA hasn't won an IIHF World Championship since 1960 and the World Junior's didn't start up until 1978.

They're a good team (though not without their issues) with all but two returning from last year's 45 win team that was one game away from the tournament. They have two very good pitchers by Summit League standards, a solid slapping corps and two girls with a lot of power.

I like the Louisville matchup a lot better than a hypothetical Michigan matchup, and if the pitching comes to play they can stay in a game with Louisville, UCLA or UAB. Headed down to Louisville for the first time this Friday, and I'm probably more excited than I would be for any other sporting event, Rose Bowl and a Stanley Cup final included.
