7 hours 12 min ago Yeah, that avatar isn't about to make you popular here.

Not to say anything about your name, signature or content of your sole post.

7 hours 38 min ago And?

He's on the roster, no?

http://www.nba.com/heat/roster/2012

8 hours 34 min ago As an official...

that's honestly the worst (I'm not commenting here, though) way to officiate, although there are people with that mentality.

For this game, though, even without a horse in the race that was exciting. Good for Juwan Howard and any of the MGoHeat fans out there.

8 hours 45 min ago Damn...

Makes me regret leaving the bar, the LeBron fan I know is probably buying rounds of shots for everyone by now.

That is pretty amazing though, even as someone who doesn't watch much NBA. I'll have to get this game on ASAP.

8 hours 49 min ago Stuff has been hectic...

but last time I saw the game LeBron had 12 points. Can you share his stat line from the end of the third/fourth quarter?

8 hours 55 min ago No PM system.

Just a few people that can see the email addresses used for registration (Brian included, obviously). No idea what SixZero did in the past, but between him and M-Wolverine they can find the help they need without much difficulty.

8 hours 58 min ago Well, you're on equal footing with anyone who starts a thread.

M-Wolverine, someone with 100 points, you, someone who got bumped to 1,000,000 for a day, we all get pretty much equal mercy for a terrible post, or props for a good one.

9 hours 32 min ago For starters...

this is not to be interpreted as any type of evaluation on Glendening. I'll leave that to the guys who specialize in scouting/evaluation, and that's not the part of hockey I like to post on.

Now that this is out of the way, Charlestown Chiefs, you are hereby awarded enough points to start a thread based on a good posting history and two good reccomendations for OP's. Have fun, don't spend them all in one place (they expire in one year).

10 hours 46 min ago Either way...

it's you here. Stop.

12 hours 30 min ago All right...

I know you two have a history of going back and forth, but the personal stuff is over the line and isn't something that should get posted.

If you're interested in getting a new account and keeping your points, that's something that can be done. You can also just change your name yourself if you don't care about doing any more ~Herm posts.

19 hours 30 sec ago There might be some confusion on these...

so called "drinking fountains". Especially in Wisconsin, for some reason.

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/mgoprofile-volume-9

22 hours 26 min ago Can't decide if you're really good at setting odds...

or really bad. Ace and Heiko are already done, and I'm pretty sure RDT was Greg Mattison.

22 hours 33 min ago Oh I totally agree.

But it's not like womens looks are the only superficial thing to get comments either.

1 day 8 hours ago To be fair...

we also have like a thousand comments on any uniform changes for any random team and it's not like people kept their opinions on Anthony Davis' unique facial hair to themselves (probably among other examples).

1 day 18 hours ago As to your second point...

it's partially true either way you want to word it. The text of what was voted on in both houses and signed by the president is this:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance, except that:

and then lists a whole bunch of exceptions and specifically includes some other entities. All of the aspects of the law we know today were formed by federal bureaucrats, to use the wording above. The three pronged test, the inclusion of revenue sports, ect., was formed and can be changed without specific congressional approval. In fact, I believe the Secretary of Education could change the current standards without even presidential approval.

1 day 19 hours ago Well...

Eisenhower did beat Rutgers starting two ways. Rutgers is big time football, right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1912_Army_Cadets_football_team

1 day 19 hours ago Obviously coaches aren't nearly as important as players...

but if Nike was really interested in making Oregon the premier program in college football, why don't they have the most highly paid coaching staff right now? All of the coaches get endorsement deals, so why doesn't Nike bankroll a fifteen million dollar coaching staff at Oregon?

I think the big distinction is that Nike isn't interested in Oregon being anything special; Phil Knight is the one with that interest. A quick search doesn't show that Nike has given anything significant to Oregon beyond a standard apparel deal and a few apparel exclusives that seem normal given their proximity.

Knight isn't going to be able to go to a shareholder meeting and justify pouring excessive amounts of money into endorsement deals for a twenty-five member class. Also, I doubt Clowney or Manziel would get any less interest from Nike because they play for South Carolina or TAMU.

1 day 22 hours ago M is definitely tops of any

M is definitely tops of any program east of Oklahoma, and might be tops at any program east of Arizona (which would be inclusive of Oklahoma) if you can really stretch an argument. I must really be confused here, but how else is the original sentence getting read?

Edit: Okay, yeah. I was using Arizona as another possible geographic point, not name a possibly better program east of Oklahoma.

2 days 8 hours ago Haven't been to Alumni Field...

but Michigan is second to none east of Oklahoma (possibly Arizona if you're very good at arguing). If you want to watch a nationally elite team, softball is right there, and it's an added attraction because Hutch probably has limited seasons in the dugout and might be the best coach in Ann Arbor right now. I recognize exactly how much that statement means, by the way, and I stand by it.

2 days 8 hours ago This is our guide...

and should be the guide for anyone looking to post paywalled content.

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/meta-premium-information-policy

3 days 8 hours ago megangoblue says...

and I quote "HAHAHAHAHA you just made my night". So there's that, which is nice.

3 days 8 hours ago Seth is the Associate Editor...

the guy who does Dear Diary and Hokepoints on the front page (among other things, I've been drinking for a couple hours and can't think of them off the top of my head), and he copyedits all of the front page content. I had asked him about your potential diary since that's his job description and he did some copyediting and had a few notes.

3 days 9 hours ago I'm pretty sure...

when I was playing nobody even kept track of hits, so I'm probably not your guy here. If I had a CenterIce bat signal I would put it up, but sadly I don't.

Also I wanted to tell you how sorry I was about the emails we exchanged a while back. I definitely thought I had replied to you with everything, but it doesn't look like it. I did do the stuff you had wanted, and Seth chimed in as well, but I guess the reply got lost in the shuffle. You'll have a reply by tomorrow night. Again, sorry for the non-response.

3 days 9 hours ago Seguin...

beautiful pass, and Paille took advantage. That play was just amazing, nothing else to say.

3 days 9 hours ago Thank you for that.

Seriously, about to start it. The girlfriend just told me she's heard that it's totally different than his previous stuff and is a bit on the odd side, so I'm pretty excited to listen to this right now. Completely agree with your comment in the last music thread, Kanye is a douche but he's definitely a great musician (same tone as the general talking about Mel Gibson in Imaginationland).

3 days 9 hours ago I'm sure Simba the pineapple has done this before...

but I'm sure you'll appreciate the cups I made at the end of May.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/971166_10151573656987621_1277820128_n.jpg

3 days 22 hours ago Yeah...

I'm guessing Detroit wouldn't mind quadrupling their population (going from 18 to 3 in the US), doubling their tourism numbers, gaining anything like the downtown area including the tallest building in the country (is there a better downtown in America?) which has two top ten universities bookending it and quadrupling their Fortune 500 HQ's.

Also all of this hypothetically would be happening while drastically reducing crime and adding an unbelievable amount of wealth. It's obvious that any US city with maybe 2-3 exceptions would kill to be Chicago.

4 days 10 hours ago Cheap leftovers at the apartment...

and probably cheap specials at the bar, but there's live music, good food and pool, so not bad for a post-celebration of the girlfriend's 21st.

Wishing I had some of the Pappy Van Winkle 20 that is sitting in my uncle's house in A2, though.

4 days 19 hours ago That's incorrect.

The rule is five years to play four. Morris could use a redshirt year as an academic freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.

4 days 19 hours ago Assuming the facilities in your particular sport are okay...

can you imagine a better recruiting pitch for a women's/non-revenue athlete? Especially in Pac 12-centric sports, I really don't know how they lose a whole lot of recruiting battles, even to UCLA or Cal.

4 days 19 hours ago There's a new account.

If the new account breaks the same rules, it will be deleted. Until then, having parody accounts of other board members is just a recipe for a terrible posting environment for everybody, and we're not going to judge who might "deserve it" or not.

Edit: How did this get placed above WolvinLA2's comment? Weird.

5 days 8 hours ago As much as certain posters were attached to him...

parody accounts of other MGoUsers have always been a no-no.

5 days 8 hours ago On the sidebar...

I turned the game off for like two hours in addition, in case the apathy wasn't clear there either. I will say last night's game was good enough to make tomorrow something to get excited about, though. Say what you will about either team, that's just good hockey right there.

Mainbar, I could go either way. Got a fraternity brother I'm close to that's a big Spurs fan, but Howard getting another ring (even playing like three minutes in the series) would be a cool story line.

6 days 7 hours ago Don't really care one way or another...

but wouldn't it be more like Lidstrom taking over Calgary for the 2013 season? Manning is a low-level guy on the staff who still has three years experience as a coach before being a position coach at M. Hart is going on two years experience as a coach and is still a position coach at a MAC program.

6 days 8 hours ago I thought Boston would take it in regulation...

but I will say that the Bolland goal to cut it to 3-2 was some of the prettiest play I've seen this playoff season, absolutely perfect ten seconds or so. Also the Hawks lucked out on the Oduya goal, although it's not like Boston can't catch a break either.

6 days 8 hours ago Yeah I saw that through the RW Twitter feed.

When it comes to casual sports watching, though, getting it on the cable box is a must. I'll watch soccer I don't care much about on TV (no knock on it, just not in my usual programming) before putting hockey I don't care much about on the computer.

They have a better deal than M hockey, though, free streaming of every game through a legit website.

Edit: Well apparently I was an idiot for turning this game off at the end of regulation. Anyone else watching Chicago v. Boston in 3OT?

6 days 9 hours ago Good regulation game in Chicago...

turned it off in the OT intermission because whatever.

Wish someone would televise the AHL playoffs or even just the finals. It would cost like six dollars for the rights and it's not like this is the busiest season for sports.

6 days 17 hours ago OT: Things that should not be talked about with kids?

Obviously political.

6 days 18 hours ago Hockey quirk.

The Stanley Cup isn't an NHL trophy. Back in the day, those teams won Cups without playing in the NHL.

It's only since 1947 that the Stanley Cup is (by official agreement) exclusively awarded to the NHL playoff champion, although no non-NHL team had won it since 1926.

6 days 18 hours ago That New York dot...

would look hilariously different if their lineup was: Jets, Rangers, Mets and Knicks. Any combination not including the Yankees would work, though.

6 days 19 hours ago Why the Illinois hate?

Their undergraduate engineering is ranked above Michigan's and they have the number three undergrad business school in the Big Ten.

Also it's obviously not an all-inclusive list, but I think you're missing a few from your 1a and 3 lists. USMA, USNA, USAFA, MIT, Caltech, Chicago for starters.

1 week 10 hours ago On the USA kick in the air...

right on the left side of Panama's goal, would the US player have been better off putting that on the ground despite the defender not far behind, or should that always get taken in the air despite it seeming like a lower percentage shot? Also curious why the home team is listed first.

I'm sure both of those questions are dumb, sorry.

1 week 1 day ago Formatting...

Give this a try, see if it clears things up:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/pretty-posts-sticky

Also I hate when people link to their own posts, you'd have to be a real ass to do that.

1 week 1 day ago It won't be getting out of hand.

Given the MGoObsession with Kate Upton, there are going to be some threads worthy of posting especially in the long off season, but the full blown proliferation of bewbs threads isn't anything to worry about.

As for this particular thread, Brian chimed in about something similar for the Official mgoblog Pet Peeve List:

Arguments about hot chicks are always welcome as long as denoted in the subject title and the specific purpose of a thread. Also exempt are pictures of Scarlett Johansson.

Also since this was written 8+(!?!?!) years ago and a whole lot has changed, the current policy needs to begin with the word "occasional".

1 week 1 day ago If you're going to get into other sports...

Kevin Borseth had an absolutely amazing presser rant while he was the WBB coach at Michigan.

1 week 1 day ago I could be wrong here...

but I think you're overestimating the time Brian puts into reading the board and the willingness to write the code for a fix that will only matter briefly, before MGo3.0 or whatever is released. It's been confirmed that points are coming back, but tripling the amount of comments in a thread probably wouldn't do anything other than serve as a minor headache for people trying to read those threads.

1 week 1 day ago Ugh.

I did, as like a sophomore in high school because a girl I liked wanted to go. Movie was terrible and the girl was a waste of time. All around fail.

1 week 1 day ago Well, here we go.
  1. I get off the grid for two days, come back to find everything is haunted. That sucks.
  2. [See above comment by Brian]
  3. We had a thread that turned into "worst movies ever" and not one movie from Matthew McConaughey's filmography was featured. Failure to Launch absolutely had to get mentioned at some point; honestly, people, that movie was one of the most terrible things I have ever seen with a script and some kind of studio backing.
  4. Those NCAA commercials claiming they're there at every stop of an athlete's life after college. They're not out planting seeds in Pahokee, they're not out there scouring websites in search of a job for the walkons and non-revenue athletes. Actually do the stuff you're claiming or STFU; both would be preferable, though.
1 week 3 days ago Wow, yeah.

We're meeting up with another friend of hers at her apartment at Probasco and Clifton Ave, and the girlfriend's dad works within a block of there (he's in the EE-CS department at UC). I don't know if that's the area we're going to, as I can't keep up with their plans, but I'll keep that in mind if we do.

1 week 3 days ago We're going there tomorrow.

Tonight with the limited timeframe we're just going to stay in Clifton, since pretty much everyone we're going out with is a student at UC. Tomorrow is some German restaurant in Mt. Adams and then some kind of nicer bar/club afterwards.

1 week 3 days ago Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Last call in Cincinnati is 2:00AM, so I think I'll just have a beer or two before hitting the bar and playing it by ear from there, doubt I'll way overdo it in two hours if I don't pregame.

I'll bet there are some crazy stories on here from 21st (or 18th if you go back far enough) birthdays. Hopefully tonight is just as wild.

Or was it the new ownership group making a change on their own? Seems like a ton of "free" advertising for Disney in exchange for letting them keep the old name and logo. Speaking of Disney, Dallas should just stick with this:

1 week 6 days ago Sorry about restarting the thread...

The bottom was all blocked out from comments. I would have moved comments if that was possible, but that's pretty much not an option for moderators. If anyone really wants a particular comment reposted, leave a comment here and I'll make sure that happens, but individually I'd say it would take about 45-60 minutes to repost the entire thread.

Again, sorry. If someone has a better idea for fixing the original I will gladly listen and see what's possible for this or for the future.

In the spirit of the thread, is there a school in the US that does anything to the tune of Auld Lang Syne? I think that would be pretty cool for whatever random reason.

1 week 6 days ago My understanding...

is that most private schools don't allow early graduation, and it just happens that a big percentage of private schools are Catholic. The people I know who went to Catholic schools largely have a hard time believing that it was technically possible to graduate from my public high school in three years (although I kind of doubt the administration would let that happen, it could theoretically).

2 weeks 12 hours ago I don't have any comment on the Miami Heat...

but just on principle I have to agree college is definitely more team oriented than the professional leagues. I'm sure there are plenty of examples to the contrary either way, but the team aspect is a big reason I spend almost all of my time following college sports as opposed to professional.

That's the press release from the conference announcing it, dated today.

Edit: Story about the press release, but still.

2 weeks 2 days ago SIAP: more to the David Perkins, O$U LB transfer story

We hit the jackpot on frowned upon posting behavior. For future reference, a comment on a website alleging criminal activity from a college athlete isn't enough to come here and post. OP's points down to zero for a month as a reminder to get a good source (and maybe leave the O$U and Urban Liar at MLive).

2 weeks 2 days ago That might be different, then.

I give her a hard time because of how little she ever shows. Her catcher thinks her face would look the same after a perfect game or a mery rule loss, and that's definitely not the way I'm programmed in competitive situations. Probably a good attribute for a pitcher, though.

2 weeks 2 days ago Yep.

They both have excellent drops, Driesenga's curve is better than MGB's changeup, though, and that probably amplifies the deeper in the arsenal you go (which is part of the reason Driesenga is pitching in OKC right now). Both get a lot of outs and let up few runs without a huge number of strikeouts, and from what I've seen they both show little/no emotion while pitching.

2 weeks 2 days ago Other than a different second pitch...

and a few other small differences, I think Driesenga and MGB look alike, style wise. Driesenga has 2-3mph and a couple inches on her, though.

2 weeks 2 days ago Yeah.

I haven't been paying 100% attention to the game, but from what I've seen she's probably been hitting the spots they want, and I believe she's throwing a fraction faster than she was last night as well.

Her job is almost certainly "keep it close enough that the top of our order can win" and she's definitely doing that.

2 weeks 3 days ago Haill!!!

And I'm so excited about the win this morning, but I'll also clarify that she's like my fourth favorite pitcher (top at M). Time to beat Washington and move on.

2 weeks 3 days ago Yay-a.

Awesome play.

2 weeks 3 days ago Driesenga...

2 weeks 3 days ago YES

Perfect to get us out of that!!!

2 weeks 3 days ago Awesome.

Let's get out of this jam, right after this intentional walk.

2 weeks 3 days ago Driesenga is pitching very well.

Hopefully she can get out of this inning with the lead.

2 weeks 3 days ago OKC.

Oklahoma.

2 weeks 3 days ago Girlfriend is a D1 pitcher, this is all from her...

She says business as usual and will throw another game without a big effect. 200 back to back is a problem after the fact, probably needing two days of rest. At an NCAA D1 practice they max at around 200, although the bigger the girl, the more she can handle (as a general rule).

2 weeks 3 days ago I should clarify.

I don't have a grudge against Crosby and think he's a great player, but as a Penguin and Canadian I've never had a reason to cheer for him. He was funny tonight trying to make Chara think he was going to start something, though. That's just physics, and I don't think it was lost on anyone at Consol Energy Center, either.

2 weeks 3 days ago I would have paid cash money...

to see Crosby punch Chara. I was actually cheering out loud for Crosby in my living room...a first.

2 weeks 3 days ago I think it can be done.

But it's a tall order, especially after getting completely shut down by Ricketts last game.

2 weeks 3 days ago Thirty minutes after Nebraska v. Florida...

on ESPN. They're in the seventh (final excepting extras) inning now.

2 weeks 3 days ago Vegas has M +1.5. O/U is 10.5.

Driesenga needs to bring her A game. I'd say five ASU runs is the cutoff for a good chance for Michigan to pull this out, unless Dallas Escobedo goes into serious beast mode. If that happens, M is in trouble. Thankfully she's not good about keeping balls in the park if you can actually connect with them.

2 weeks 3 days ago Comedy of errors:
  • Pitcher fields bunt, makes iffy throw
  • 2B misses the catch
  • RF comes in for backup, misses the ball off the wall
  • Ball bounces fairly deep into right field
  • Meanwhile, the girl who bunted was fast (<12s around the bases)
2 weeks 3 days ago Also...

I'm being told that Escobedo will rack up a lot of strikeouts but is susceptible to getting balls jacked out of the park. Hopefully Romero is licking her chops at that idea.

2 weeks 3 days ago Vegas has M +1.5.

Dallas Escobedo (ASU pitcher) isn't on Ricketts level, but she's at least equal to anyone else they've faced. M is 1-0 against ASU this year, Escobedo giving up 5H 5R 5ER 2BB and 10SO. The real concern is that Wagner might not be ready to go. ASU is a great hitting team, and these were the stat lines for the pitchers earlier this year:

Wagner-    4.2IP 10H 4R 4ER 1BB 3SO
Driesenga- 2.1IP 4H 0R 0ER 0BB 2SO

Wagner was pulled in the fourth and brought back in for the seventh. If Driesenga can hold them under five or so (the hits in that box score don't look promising) I think M has a good chance. That's not going to be easy to do, though.

2 weeks 3 days ago Wow.

Yeah, that's getting edited. Oops.

2 weeks 3 days ago Listening to anything new in the hip hop genre?

Loved the stuff you steered me to before.

2 weeks 4 days ago I did it.

It's Vincent Smith's account; if a guy like Smith wants to post and can be verified as real he doesn't go through the same waiting game to post like you or I did, and 500 is the minimum that allows you to do everything possible as a poster.

It's not common, but it does happen occasionally. Same goes if someone posted awesome original content without enough points to post it as a forum topic or diary.

2 weeks 4 days ago It's not the NCAA rules at play...

it's the individual professional leagues. If the NFL wants to change its draft rules to allow drafted players to come out of high school or keep playing in college, that's on them, not the NCAA. Same goes with the NBA.

The only thing the NCAA says is that you cannot hire an agent and you cannot sign a professional contract. Since the NFL and NBA require agents to enter the draft, those players become ineligible.

2 weeks 4 days ago My mistake.

I misspoke on baseball above, which is especially dumb since I applied it correctly when thinking about basketball going to that system.

2 weeks 4 days ago The NBA at least...

and I'm pretty certain the NFL as well, require hiring an agent to enter the draft which is against NCAA rules. Not sure of the rules for baseball, but hockey all you need to do is tell the NHL that you're interested in being drafted. As long as you don't sign a contract or hire an agent, you're allowed to play. Another distinction is that NBA and NFL draft rights only exist for one year, while MLB and NHL rules have provisions for longer than that.

I think football, hockey and baseball are more or less fine. A modified version of the baseball rules would probably help NCAA basketball and the NBA, IMO.

2 weeks 4 days ago MLive says 6-8 weeks from game two in Anaheim.

I'm assuming he'd be a stretch for the finals, but who knows, especially with the way pro athletes can come back these days.

The frustration isn't on Dekeyser, just thinking that something so small can sideline someone so big (I'm aware than an ACL or MCL is tiny too) sucks.

2 weeks 4 days ago Not sure what's up this weekend.

Will be watching some of the WCWS for sure, drinking something good for sure, but beyond that I have no idea. This is probably the first viable swimming weekend if the storms hold off during the day, so the pool/hot tub while grilling would be awesome.

2 weeks 4 days ago Really could have used Dekeyser the whole series.

Of all the things to sideline a player, a finger is excessively frustrating for some reason.

2 weeks 5 days ago Yeah.

1-0 with their "backup" throwing a two-hitter on 3/2. Ricketts has lost one game all year, somehow losing to Louisville 5-1. After seeing Louisville live at their regional, that game makes absolutely no sense to me and I have to assume Ricketts didn't get to bed the night before or tweaked a muscle or something. They followed that loss with a 9-1 win in five innings half an hour later.

On a side note, she's a freshman and not there yet, but the Nebraska pitcher who threw the win against Oklahoma is going to be really freaking good. Emily Lockman is her name, and Michigan is going to need to keep up their hitting if they want to keep the conference streak going the next three years.

2 weeks 5 days ago This Oklahoma team isn't losing.

As context for anyone who doesn't follow softball closely, M was third in the nation in scoring as of 10:00 tonight, and Ricketts just threw like a 92 pitch no-hitter. She's unbelievable, her backup is probably 90% as good, and their hitting has been on fire lately.

2 weeks 5 days ago Jeez.

M isn't even playing poorly; this Oklahoma team is something else. It still isn't over though, definitely possible to get back into this.

the dropoff from Ricketts to Gascoigne isn't a whole lot. They're easily the best pitchers left in the tournament and they're both wearing Oklahoma jersies.

2 weeks 5 days ago Vegas has...

M+4.5, O/U 9.5 (NTO/U). Going by Brian's football method the MGoPrediction would probably be 7-2, them.

M needs to make this a shootout to win, IMO. Thankfully Michigan is probably the second best offense in the country, so anything could be possible.

2 weeks 5 days ago $150 for all of them.

They wouldn't shut up about it in Louisville, and I'm sure it was the same in Ann Arbor.

2 weeks 5 days ago If...

(and I do think it's a pretty big if) M can win tonight they just might be able to go all the way. Oklahoma is a very, very scary team, although that's not to say Michigan is a pushover or anything.

ASU v. Texas first pitch just thrown on ESPN2. Winners of this game and the Michigan v. Oklahoma play, losers of the two games play an elimination game.

2 weeks 5 days ago Apparently you're working on two levels now.

So congrats with that.

2 weeks 5 days ago If you go by time/place, then I agree.

But both the boarding no-call that led to a Kane goal and the goaltender interference call in game four were game changing, potentially series changing decisions. I didn't see a good video of it and using a single photograph to judge something like that would be a terrible idea, but if it was a slewfoot that injured Filppula that was huge as well. Also the decision to call or not call a penalty shot probably decided whether game six went into overtime or not.

In principle, I disagree about referees deciding games. If something is illegal, it's their job to call it whether there's :30 on the clock in game seven or it's a peewee scrimmage in California. I don't want them leaning one way or another, but you have to make a call if you see it.

Definiely agree about the playoff run. The Hawks were obviously the more talented team, and the Wings played some great hockey to beat Anaheim. Sucks to be on the bad end of it, but that's sports I guess.

2 weeks 5 days ago You know there are other websites available...

where this kind of post is within their rules, correct? Either way, it's not appropriate for this Michigan sports blog. Return flight is in one month.

2 weeks 5 days ago I didn't say they were perfect.

I have a bit of a different interpretation of what happened on that call, but that's neither here nor there. Taken in its entirety, this was an evenly officiated series, which is all I was saying above. Even if you say they totally blew that call, there were other totally blown calls that didn't go the right way for the Wings. I don't think they were perfect, but I thought the officiating was even all around, and they got most of the big calls right.

2 weeks 6 days ago It has nothing to do with chance.

The referees have been about as good as you can ask this series, at least as far as penalties go. These guys are the best of the best, just like the players.

Fine with criticism for that, but that's an area I pay a lot of attention to and I'd say I've come down enough on either side to have a bit of respect for impartiality.

2 weeks 6 days ago The series has been pretty even.

Shouldn't be bitching on either side, regardless of outcome (pending overtime(s), obviously).

2 weeks 6 days ago Penalty behind the play.

It wasn't anything in the attacking zone, it was the two roughing calls along the boards in the neutral zone.

2 weeks 6 days ago Shenanigans.

Some dumb shit in front of the Wings bench. Originally I was thinking the best call would be coincidental minors or maybe a misconduct (no call on it and it didn't look like the right call to penalize either team, at the time at least), but there's a photo out there that appears to show Filppula being slew-footed. Not cool if so, obviously.

2 weeks 6 days ago OT- Historians on the board: Criteria for celebrating people in

Definitely political. Taking a look at differing views on historical figures like Christopher Columbus might be a start, for a Michigan connection there are plenty of people who are outspoken about what Yost's legacy should be.

3 weeks 11 hours ago Just to clarify.

BR is frowned upon, but I've never heard a word from Brian on it, and Seth hasn't said anything to me that hasn't been posted on the board. Pretty much the only "strict orders" we're ever under are after Seth posts a warning about Ace Williams on the board or in the mod sticky.

3 weeks 11 hours ago Pitchers are special people on a softball diamond.

Coaches don't want their pitchers hurt from sliding, since one great pitcher is enough for a national championship run (or whatever goals your team has). Also I'm almost positive there isn't a baseball team in the country that only carries 3-4 pitchers, which is the norm in softball, so that magnifies the importance of keeping any one of them healthy. Not saying it's a good or bad rule, but that's got to be the reasoning.

The real dumbest thing in softball is calling the designated hitter the "designated player". That's both stupid and redundant. That and allowing organized cheering the entire game, I hate that too.

3 weeks 11 hours ago Start with this post from Seth.

-GO BLUE!!!!!

3 weeks 17 hours ago Yeah, I'm familiar.

I played everything from house to AA to HS hockey, fourteen years in all. In my experience the best players on the team aren't usually the wealthiest, and I've heard some crazy stories about AAA level youth clubs and what gets the 2-3rd line guys onto teams.

The converse of that is what would happen if, say, the Trouba family didn't have a ton of money. From what I've heard, they'll offer dues cuts that scale to income to allow great players to play for their club without paying what the bottom few players pay. That doesn't cover five new Synergy's and the Marriot room in Toronto, but it still allows for a family with relatively lower resources to afford a spot on the same team.

3 weeks 18 hours ago With hockey...

Demographically, I don't think you could put together a team of future pros on their own dime. A freak player like JMFJ or even Trouba doesn't need to have (a lot of) money in their family to make it as far as they have, but once you start getting to the second and third tier of players a lot of it can come down to coaching and what club dues a family could afford to pay to see good competition and just keep the player on the ice.

I think you could build a team at Yale or wherever that would compete, and they might even get a deep roster, but they would definitely have problems getting to a NC caliber (I'm thinking specifically goalies).

Didn't consider tennis, but anything that needs a lot of individual lessons will probably trend to higher income brackets. I'd bet pitchers on baseball and softball teams tend to be above average for the team, for example.

3 weeks 19 hours ago Crew and equestrian (non-NCAA, though).

Maybe lacrosse? I wonder about skiing or fencing.

Hockey has to be up there, but I agree M couldn't fund the team privately. Maybe some of the smaller schools on the east coast could, though.

3 weeks 20 hours ago Longest thread ever:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/outback-bowl-open-thread-0

As far as this thread, take a look on the sideboard. A conference semifinal game six for the Wings had more comments than this before the timestamp was changed. The last few basketball games averaged 500-650 per half, and I wouldn't be shocked to see a non-college football, non-Wings, non-Lions thread hit 500 at some point this summer.

3 weeks 1 day ago Not funny...

but "one of those strange things" that too many men basically exists in mites and squirts and then disappears until you're playing with NHL caliber players. Logically it makes sense, but still odd thinking about it in those terms.

3 weeks 1 day ago Not smart, Franzen.

Seriously, the Wings cannot win with a lot of penalty kills.

3 weeks 1 day ago Cool story bro disclaimer.

Growing up playing hockey in Illinois (where the state championship is the Blackhawk Cup) with a bunch of Blackhawk fans, sons of Hawks players and practically no Wings fans, there were like four of us '89's who were die hard Wings fans and for some reason this is the series that got us all talking again after about five years. Hoping for a win tonight so we can have some good times at the expense of all the guys predicting that the Wings "would be lucky to get to five" this series.

3 weeks 1 day ago There's a handle...

that updates with every post, not just stories on the front page but forum topics and diaries too. Can't remember what it's called, though.

3 weeks 1 day ago I really doubt there's a Michigan v. Oklahoma final.

Not that Oklahoma can't lose, but it would be a shock in the softball world to see them coming out of the losers bracket. Ricketts is 29-1 this year, their pitching staff is easily the best 1/2 tandem in recent memory and they're scoring more runs than anyone in the country. The closest game they've played this postseason was still a five run victory.

3 weeks 1 day ago You can redshirt at any time.

The rule is five years to play four, with a few exeptions for hardship or medical reasons.

3 weeks 2 days ago Yeah.

That's a ban every time. Apologies for letting it stay as long as it did, it's a busy weekend here.

3 weeks 2 days ago What?

I'd think a super regional game is more of a "moment to shine" than announcing a college decision. Unfortunate scheduling by Peppers, but softball has been scheduled for this time and date on ESPNU for at least a year.

3 weeks 3 days ago Would it make a difference to you...

if you knew the OP was a primary source of photographs for the site (the main page)?

3 weeks 3 days ago Defensive assignments...

so I'm not sure where he falls on the very good/elite/all-time scale, but ULL's pitcher is probably the top mid-major pitcher. However, she would actually be third on the depth chart for the team Michigan faces if they win their super regional, and would probably be at or near the bottom of WCWS pitching talent if they were to make it.

Bottom line, all the pitchers are good by this time of year, but she's not anything special to go against in a super regional.

3 weeks 4 days ago Not as of about three years ago.

Bought both trilogies so I'd finally have my own copies, and it's still there. Yes, I realize my placement of IV and V is weird. Whatever.

3 weeks 5 days ago That's just from Notre Dame, though.

Michigan pays Hoke a base salary of $300,000 with total compensation at $2.2m, so it stands to reason that Kelly is making a significant amount more than what ND reports as his base salary. I'm sure the sports networks and Adidas pay Kelly right about what they pay Hoke, which is where most of the money in a coaches contract comes from anyway.

3 weeks 5 days ago My fault.

About the thread, I originally thought the thread title referenced M playing. OTOH I came back to the apartment today and passed out for quite a while, so I was pretty groggy when I read it the first time. An open thread for M wouldn't have made much sense, but like I said above, question withdrawn if this had been the title the whole time.

3 weeks 5 days ago Yeah I agree.

Close game, you take the point, even with whatever tiny amount of time there was left. If a team pulls the goalie they're operating under the premise that they could come back, and there's no reason for the attacking player to act differently.

3 weeks 5 days ago Is this real life?

3 weeks 5 days ago I didn't believe it either.

Just looked it up and apparently it's listed as a line somewhere. Given that you would have to triple the last score to hit the over, I'm guessing this sportsbook will just be lucky if there isn't much action taken (which I have to guess will be the case).

3 weeks 5 days ago OT - Etymological Voracity

A typo in a transcript is not threadworthy, nor should anyone attempt to make anything the White House says or does with the tiniest relation to MGoBlog into a thread.

3 weeks 5 days ago I'm confused as well.

2:00 ESPNU tomorrow, then Saturday 12:00 ESPN. What's the thread tonight for, MGoSoftball?

Edit: Was the title always just "Softball Super Regionals Open Thread"? Withdraw the question if so, I just didn't think it was.

3 weeks 6 days ago "I don't feel anything...you are so weak."

3 weeks 6 days ago We had at least one track meet in HS...

that had some crazy events tacked on at the end, including a 4*4 restricted to shotputters. That was always an awesome race to watch.

3 weeks 6 days ago Never really got into watching all star games.

But I like seeing the NHL skills competition, and the dunk competition is the only NBA I make a point of watching in a given year (although the three point contest is also very cool). I imagine the home run derby is great for baseball fans also, but it's not like football is really set up to do anything like the best of those other three. If you want to watch guys run 40's or bench press the combine seems a lot easier to care about than guys already on a team.

Yes, I'm aware none of this is about the actual Pro Bowl or the proposed changes.

3 weeks 6 days ago HEY!!!!!

You can't talk about Moleskyn like that, he's spent more time on the site than you have.

4 weeks 14 hours ago Gotcha.

I'm on Android and rarely use the app (I lose my modding buttons) even there, although I do have it installed. Just linking should still be an option, but if it's Facebook the link needs to be to the picture itself and not the picture in the profile.

4 weeks 14 hours ago Congrats!

To load a picture, link to it from an image hosting site (Facebook, Flikr, TinyPic) using the "image" button on the far right in a comment or in your OP. Just click the button and paste the link, I don't know if this will work from the iPhone app or if you need an actual browser to do it.

4 weeks 1 day ago Part one of the rule...

says that it's interference if the attacking player's presence impairs the goaltender's ability to defend his goal. I was surprised they called it, but I think the call was the right one in the technical sense.

4 weeks 1 day ago I do agree that technically the call was correct.

But that's not the way people are used to seeing the rule applied. He was screening Howard with both feet squarely inside the crease (at least for a second, which I'm sure is when the referee went from looking at the action within the circle over to Howard and the slot), so it's tough to feel sorry for him, but I doubt very much that even the Wings on the ice felt they would get that call.

4 weeks 1 day ago I feel like there's an NFL

I feel like there's an NFL replacement referee joke to be had there somewhere, or at least would have been ten months ago.

4 weeks 1 day ago I think it was too.

But only seeing it twice and not seeing the referees head/back referees position is going to make me hedge a bit on saying anything for certain. Again, I agree (and maybe "questionable" was the wrong word) like I said above, Franzen was almost defenitely "defenseless" by the common interpretation and boarding was probably the correct call.

4 weeks 1 day ago The no-call there was questionable.

With the way they've been calling stuff, Franzen almost definitely fits the "defenseless" critera in the boarding rule. I don't know why NBC is assuming people are confused about the no-whistle, but calling boarding in that situation was probably the correct thing to do.

4 weeks 2 days ago This should be a posbanged post.

ULL is one of the better mid-majors of the past decade; them beating LSU is probably more impressive than Michigan beating Cal with Henderson hurt. I didn't get to see much of the Ann Arbor or Baton Rouge regionals, but I'm hoping to catch up in the next few days.

4 weeks 2 days ago UCLA decided this time yesterday...

that they were interested in winning the regional. The difference in their batters between game one v. UAB and the first five innings of the IPFW game and the last two in addition to their last two games is completely absurd. They had scored five runs and given up six in their first 13 innings. They've scored 31 and given up four in the last 16 they've played.

4 weeks 3 days ago Toronto is definitely first in that group.

But it's pretty much the Wings and Canadiens and then the other four. Not winning a cup in the expansion era is a big knock on their tradition relative to Detroit and Montreal.

What does Boston have? Two Cups in the seventies? Orr>Hull?

4 weeks 3 days ago Maybe.

But it's not like five of the Original Six have been excellent since 1942 and they're the outlier. If they have less tradition than Boston, NYR, and Toronto, it isn't by much.

4 weeks 3 days ago I have nothing but respect...

For the Blackhawks as an organization, and "lacking tradition" is pretty ridiculous, but the United Center was damn near impossible to fill, at least the times our teams needed to sell 300 section blocks. Unless the Blues or Wings were in town, you pretty much ate the cost of the seats.

I'd also add that there are a ton of fair weather fans that all claim to be lifelong fans despite lacking basic knowledge about team history or hockey in general. The real question is whether there are more than other "long dormant" teams recently finding success, and I have no way of knowing that.

4 weeks 3 days ago Good to hear.

Without Henderson, Cal isn't a very good team, none of the other pitchers on staff are good enough to give Michigan and their excellent lineup much trouble. I'd be watching but I'm currently at the Louisville regional wandering around their campus until four. No bars within walking distance of athletic campus is bad form, Louisville.

4 weeks 5 days ago Derp.

That was his IIHF Word Championship title, and I hadn't even considered that he would be older than 19 since I started by looking at another table...Long story, but anyway, anyone on Canada's roster for both tournaments would have won both, but obviously Sakic wouldn't have been on both rosters.

To atone with some more, anyone on both Czech Republic's rosters in 2001 would have it. Same with 1989 USSR and 1978 and 1979 USSR. 1997 Canada would also fit the bill.

4 weeks 5 days ago Pam redeemed herself.

I didn't like where her character was going at all this season, but her exit interview and the surprise for Jim brought her back around, I thought. Still upstaged by Jim's last interview, although that could very well just be gender differences and ease of identification talking.

Agree on Michael. Creed and Erin were perfect for the finale, and for some reason I loved Dwight's line about allowing Jim and Pam to stay in his barn.

All in all, it was a finale, and wasn't as good as Michael's sendoff after the Dundies, but then again that was one of the better sendoffs I can think of. They seemed to promise nothing more or less than "satisfying" and I thought they hit that, for sure.

4 weeks 5 days ago Two player of the year candidates in Ann Arbor...

in Romero and Henderson, who were named to the semifinal, top-ten list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Those two might very well be the most interesting individual matchup in any of the sixteen regionals.

4 weeks 5 days ago From what I can see...

Magnus copy/pastes but doesn't use the link button when posting the thread. That works for me, although I'm usually on my browser on my phone, and I don't know that a majority do it either way. That's possibly the difference, though.

4 weeks 5 days ago Fetisov...

and any of the other (similarly aged) USSR players in at least 1978 did it, as did Sakic and Canada in 1994 (at least, I didn't check back further than that team). No American could have done it, since the USA hasn't won an IIHF World Championship since 1960 and the World Junior's didn't start up until 1978.

4 weeks 5 days ago The creator is a guy named...

machoalex31. I couldn't find it in a search by title, though.

4 weeks 5 days ago OT: LIQUID DREAM - Greatest short film of all time

Tribe has spoken. FWIW I didn't get the humor either, and with 190 views in about a year on YouTube, I'm guessing a sizeable percentage of views in the last year came from this post.

4 weeks 6 days ago I have a problem that...

he's a very good player not in a Red Wings jersey, but it is really disingenuous to say he's a sellout when the Wings got him on a one year deal, from another elite team no less. Holland couldn't offer Hossa as much as Chicago did, and Hossa went to Chicago. That's what free agents do.

5 weeks 1 day ago Was that in the DII days or more recently?

They're a good team (though not without their issues) with all but two returning from last year's 45 win team that was one game away from the tournament. They have two very good pitchers by Summit League standards, a solid slapping corps and two girls with a lot of power.

I like the Louisville matchup a lot better than a hypothetical Michigan matchup, and if the pitching comes to play they can stay in a game with Louisville, UCLA or UAB. Headed down to Louisville for the first time this Friday, and I'm probably more excited than I would be for any other sporting event, Rose Bowl and a Stanley Cup final included.

5 weeks 1 day ago I completely agree with your last paragraph.

That's how I was looking at it, and I think that's the right way to look at a regional. If the question had been "is this a tough regional for Michigan" then I would completely agree about Cal being the most important factor.

Henderson is healthy now, by all accounts, and will be a really tough draw. She gave an interview last year that will stick with me for a long time, funny stuff.

5 weeks 1 day ago OT- What is this guy thinking?

Bad idea for a thread, dropped the OP to zero for a month for thread starting purposes, put a poster in the negative for calling the president names.

5 weeks 1 day ago I don't think AA is bad at all...

Cal is a good team, but Valpo is pretty much terrible (one of Detroit's five wins was Valpo) and CMU is a generic MAC tournament champion that Michigan already beat 11-0 earlier this season.

5 weeks 2 days ago There with...

Louisville
IPFW

UAB
UCLA

Some bigger names. Can't wait to see the scouting reports and maybe some tape from this year to see how the matchups look.

5 weeks 2 days ago I'm at the Selection Show party...

at IPFW. Can't wait to see what happens tonight. Hope for a good draw for the Mastodons and a top eight seed for M.

5 weeks 2 days ago If they do it in a film room...

or small theater on campus I won't complain at all, they shouldn't get faulted for that. Howeva, apparantly there was some talk about getting a room at Buffalo Wild Wings, which...yeah. If they're not here because they're at a glorified bar, that wouldn't be so cool.

5 weeks 2 days ago They're not back yet.

And now their coach is thinking about stopping somewhere to watch the show, which kind of makes my two hour round trip up to a Michigan party store kind of a big waste of gas and cash.

5 weeks 2 days ago Orange/pineapple juice right now.

Maybe nothing later, maybe a lot, I have no idea.

5 weeks 2 days ago Congrats (on the last part).

That really is awesome.

5 weeks 3 days ago I even bought it once.

Especially stupid because it was for making Old Fashioned's, where you really can just use a small sugar cube and a few drops of water. That was just after my 21st though; I bought a whole bunch of weird shit I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
