I haven't commented in two years, but I logged on to say thank you Seth. These words...
I can't remember how sports became such a part of my life any more than I remember how my dad entered it.
My sentiments exactly.
Thank you Seth for these words. I have also had my dad for 34 years and found out today he is now cancer free.
May God grant you peace and people to carry you through.

I picked a bad year to start
|2 years 46 weeks ago||yes||
Which is why using a predictive tool to select my brackets was as rational of a choice as flipping a coin. There are years when Kenpom's projections would win a pool, and years (like last year) when using it would mean last place. This is why I don't think you refer to it in looking at Michigan's tournament potential - as Brian did in this post.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||Kenpom||
I am a huge fan of Kenpom and effeciency stats, and watch entirely too much college basketball for a man my age. Having said that, the Pomeroy ratings are a wonderful tool, but can also be generally useless in March.
Last season I decided to use Kenpom and Kenpom only to determine my selections in my bracket...this did not end well.
As long as we're mentioning teams that are "better than Michigan" in Kenpom world - let's not leave out the Memphis Tigers whom Michigan soundly beat by 12, the Wisconsin Badgers whom Michigan pounded by 18 and of course you can't forget Rick Majerus and the Saint Louis Bilikens
Kenpom should be used in moderation, and is useful for many things...just not predicting the success of Michigan's tournament run. Perhaps a few days of not looking at kenpom.com would do Brian some good

I know I should have expected disappointment but I was hoping for...
* Stories from the 1997 team
* Stories from actual games in the rivalry
* Something resembling analysis of tomorrow's game
Instead we got an hour of glorified elementary school level arguing - good times
Still love Marcus Ray though, an important member of the greatest Michigan defense I will probably ever see. Hope for the best for him
|3 years 14 weeks ago||both expected||
Marcus being arrogant and callers sounding like morons is exactly what I expected

yes, yes, a thousand times yes

I was going to post the same thing...man you're quick
I thought I saw this as well, making it the only thing worthwhile about the BTN preview show.
I have been hoping for the speed option desperately since hearing of the new regime.
Because of this I wondered if I just imagined it or dreamed it being on the BTN.
I tend to imagine and dream a lot of things about Michigan football this close to the first game

When I first visited Mgoblog I was stunned by the quality of your recruiting update.
Thanks for everything and good luck to you

I still have my Michigan Basketball #54 T-Shirt that I bought because of how much I loved watching Tractor Traylor play. Such sad news

This post is top-notch...full of information, caters to the layman (me), and specific to this fall's season prospects. Thanks Craig

I am feeling very Fred Jackson-like in my assessment of Thomas Rawls... a shorter version of the A-Train
|3 years 51 weeks ago||agreed||
But there are good reads and bad reads on every play in football as well. Ultimately Brian is evaluating results more than process. But process is considered as well...
At any rate, if you were doing the final full possession for UofM, you would have to give Darius a good read (+1) and Stu's shot would probably qualify as something like a +eleventy billion.
mgoblog has taught me more about football than any other source, but I know what Coach Beilein is trying to accomplish on any given offensive possession: spacing, openings due to defensive underplay/overplay, dribble penetration and execute. I was just disappointed with the evaluation of the offense in this post. UMhoops does an excellent job and Brian has said as much before so I'm done whining now
|3 years 51 weeks ago||Can be done||
Don't evaluate players by potential reads, but by actual possession by possession performance... +/- players based on execution, individual battles, and give Coach B credit in the RPS department for good play calls offensively and defensively
Having said that, I'm not literally asking Brian (or anyone for that matter) to do UFR for Basketball. I just think the comparison to the Amaker offensive philosophy is laughable at best
|3 years 51 weeks ago||UFR||
If you did UFR for Basketball you would come out with a different conclusion about this team's offensive execution. Add experience to Hardaway, Smotrycz, and Morgan and this will improve dramatically next year. Comparison to the Amaker offense is like saying Debord and Rodriguez were both good offensive minds

It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!

There are so many great statistics to analyze, but all I keep thinking is

Stu has ice-water in his veins
Novak did everything a leader needs to do
D-Mo played all 40 minutes - 17 pts, 8 assists, 4 reb
Michigan out-rebounded MSU at the Bres...

If Sam's gut feeling turns out to be true, I'd say that was a pretty productive initial hosting for the new staff

what a totally rational time to evaluate Hoke's recruiting abilities.
|4 years 6 days ago||mine too||
|4 years 1 week ago||Coordinators||
Hiring excellent coordinators is such an underrated part of evaluating a good head coach. The fact that Borges and Mattison speak so well of Hoke, even though both have been in the game for much longer is a major credit to Hoke.
Yesterday I kept thinking about Greg Robinson and how they kept showing him again and again throughout the Gator Bowl. This hire makes me very happy

Just a guess here, but I don't think Mattison is coming in to run the 3-3-5

Brian's coming around...each post has a small percentage less vitriol toward the Hokester. Brian loves him so Hoke!
