|2 weeks 46 min ago||Thank you Seth||
I haven't commented in two years, but I logged on to say thank you Seth. These words...
I can't remember how sports became such a part of my life any more than I remember how my dad entered it.
My sentiments exactly.
Thank you Seth for these words. I have also had my dad for 34 years and found out today he is now cancer free.
May God grant you peace and people to carry you through.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||hmmm||
I picked a bad year to start
|2 years 20 weeks ago||yes||
Which is why using a predictive tool to select my brackets was as rational of a choice as flipping a coin. There are years when Kenpom's projections would win a pool, and years (like last year) when using it would mean last place. This is why I don't think you refer to it in looking at Michigan's tournament potential - as Brian did in this post.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Kenpom||
I am a huge fan of Kenpom and effeciency stats, and watch entirely too much college basketball for a man my age. Having said that, the Pomeroy ratings are a wonderful tool, but can also be generally useless in March.
Last season I decided to use Kenpom and Kenpom only to determine my selections in my bracket...this did not end well.
As long as we're mentioning teams that are "better than Michigan" in Kenpom world - let's not leave out the Memphis Tigers whom Michigan soundly beat by 12, the Wisconsin Badgers whom Michigan pounded by 18 and of course you can't forget Rick Majerus and the Saint Louis Bilikens
Kenpom should be used in moderation, and is useful for many things...just not predicting the success of Michigan's tournament run. Perhaps a few days of not looking at kenpom.com would do Brian some good

I know I should have expected disappointment but I was hoping for...
* Stories from the 1997 team
* Stories from actual games in the rivalry
* Something resembling analysis of tomorrow's game
Instead we got an hour of glorified elementary school level arguing - good times
Still love Marcus Ray though, an important member of the greatest Michigan defense I will probably ever see. Hope for the best for him

I thought I saw this as well, making it the only thing worthwhile about the BTN preview show.
I have been hoping for the speed option desperately since hearing of the new regime.
Because of this I wondered if I just imagined it or dreamed it being on the BTN.
I tend to imagine and dream a lot of things about Michigan football this close to the first game

I am feeling very Fred Jackson-like in my assessment of Thomas Rawls... a shorter version of the A-Train
|3 years 26 weeks ago||agreed||
But there are good reads and bad reads on every play in football as well. Ultimately Brian is evaluating results more than process. But process is considered as well...
At any rate, if you were doing the final full possession for UofM, you would have to give Darius a good read (+1) and Stu's shot would probably qualify as something like a +eleventy billion.
mgoblog has taught me more about football than any other source, but I know what Coach Beilein is trying to accomplish on any given offensive possession: spacing, openings due to defensive underplay/overplay, dribble penetration and execute. I was just disappointed with the evaluation of the offense in this post. UMhoops does an excellent job and Brian has said as much before so I'm done whining now
|3 years 26 weeks ago||Can be done||
Don't evaluate players by potential reads, but by actual possession by possession performance... +/- players based on execution, individual battles, and give Coach B credit in the RPS department for good play calls offensively and defensively
Having said that, I'm not literally asking Brian (or anyone for that matter) to do UFR for Basketball. I just think the comparison to the Amaker offensive philosophy is laughable at best
|3 years 26 weeks ago||UFR||
If you did UFR for Basketball you would come out with a different conclusion about this team's offensive execution. Add experience to Hardaway, Smotrycz, and Morgan and this will improve dramatically next year. Comparison to the Amaker offense is like saying Debord and Rodriguez were both good offensive minds

|3 years 27 weeks ago||mine too||
|3 years 27 weeks ago||Coordinators||
Hiring excellent coordinators is such an underrated part of evaluating a good head coach. The fact that Borges and Mattison speak so well of Hoke, even though both have been in the game for much longer is a major credit to Hoke.
Yesterday I kept thinking about Greg Robinson and how they kept showing him again and again throughout the Gator Bowl. This hire makes me very happy

This has been coming since the second half of the Wisconsin game - I never thought I'd see the team in blue get pushed around like that in the Big House.
I fully subscribe to the theory that college coaches ought to have the opportunity to graduate at least one class before judgment is rendered, especially when accompanied by radical philiosphy changes.
It is a certain shame how Coach Rod will be remembered for his tenure here (he would have been better off without mandatory press conferences). However, if he needed a signature win to save his job, then the inverse would be true: the Wisconsin game is the signature loss that ushered in the end of this era.
If Rodriguez is leading the team next fall I will be excited and uber-confident in a successful year. If Harbaugh is leading the team next fall I will be exicted and uber-confident in a successful year. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't get any other approach.

If you haven't read "Death to the BCS," I would highly recommend it. I always knew there was an inordinate amount of depth to the reason I hated the BCS system, and now I know why.

Improvement, Progression, Increased Basketball IQ - all non-existent under previous Michigan coaches. I honestly believe Coach B is one of the best teachers in the game today. What they have done with Morgan in such a short time would have worked wonders with a player like Courtney Sims. There will be some rough nights, but it will be a lot of fun watching this team get better. With the addition of the practice facility and upgrades to Crisler, things are looking bright for hoops in Ann Arbor.

Watching this team vs. last year's team is very different thus far. It's hard not to get excited about where this team will be next year - Novak and Douglass providing senior leadership, another year of development for the 3 bigs, with Burke and Brundidge into the mix. I'm fully confident in Coach B.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||high hopes||
Not cool Brian, your totally rational and statistically based analysis has caused me to begin to build my hopes up. Hope is a many dreaded thing.
The main difference is that a loss will only cause me to say "7-5 is what I expected" over and over as well. Which sure beats that dark place that 5-6 took me to after losing to Wiscy last fall.

I think at one point Griese was actually frustrated with Denard and Tate as he talked about their "aversion" to taking the tight end on the roll-outs. This had to be a little annoying to Brian as we know that in his playing days he displayed no such aversion. Any chance the Big Ten Network would consider offering Griese Chris Martin's job?

I was definitely a little bummed when Davies name did not appear on the pre-lim...having said that, I really hope Buddle travels to South Africa. |4 years 24 weeks ago||Fun Friday Game||
Interesting stuff jamiemac
Darius Morris: Over - It's too bad it has taken this long, but we're starting to see why this kid was so highly touted. He will be on the floor for 35-38 minutes a game next year, and shooting a lot of free throws. I think that equates to approx 12-13 ppg
Jordan Morgan: Is "I have no idea" a valid answer? No? Ok, I'll take the under. I do think, however, he is an upgrade over Gibby - certainly not in scoring ability but in rebounding, defense, and hopefully basketball IQ
METRICS: Evan's production will be so impacted by other factors: Manny's decision, Trey's decision, Horford's decision... because I'm always an optimist I'll take the under assuming Manny will be back and Horford will be getting some opportunities as well. Nevertheless, I think we're going to love this kid
If Zeigler and Horford turn blue...It would certainly rival if not surpass the 02-03 classes but that is a reasonable comparison (well played AC 1997)
BONUS ROUND: OVER/UNDER Morris assists next season: 6.5

wasn't the first question, but repeating it twice and then compounding the issue by offering to re-read some proof-texted quote from the Feagin issue. His "just doing my job," retort to TomVH (via twitter) felt quite misplaced, like he had just stepped off the set of some semi-dramatic cop show like "Castle," or the like.
Here's a hint - reporting includes respect. If the man isn't going to answer the question, don't go with the "smartest guy in the room" routine.

to be honest i dont know why i wasnt playing... my coach told me he felt i wasnt ready yet
With the state of our safety play in 09...this one left me a little unsettled
|4 years 26 weeks ago||ahh hindsight...||
Jimmy King was actually considered by some to be the second best talent in the fab five coming out of high school - even when the team could have been his to lead he underachieved...don't get me wrong I love those guys - and I know he's been disappointing of late - but Manny Harris starts on that team
|4 years 26 weeks ago||simple is good||
initials and allegiance...
|4 years 28 weeks ago||the offense||
The offense did seem to run smoother with better spacing without Harris on the floor last night. I wonder if the younger players deferring to him causes the offense to sputter at times. When the offense is flowing with him in the game (NCAA first round vs. Clemson) they become a very difficult team to stop.
Darius Morris is improving very quickly, giving hope that next year's drop-off won't be nearly as severe as some project. A lot of that depends on the capability of Metrics and hopefully Horford coming in and contributing.
Still holding out hope for this year...a boy can dream
