This ultimately comes down to opinion once you break everything down to an elite group. Funch has a ways to go, but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up in the discussion. Go out and do your thing against the rivals in big wins and the sky's the limit.

I don't blame Joey. He had to sit through a Michigan blowout and it probably reminded him of the beatdowns Michigan put on him. Kind of like PTSD for Ohio players.

Hoke is probably a great guy and genuine. Hate me if you want, but I'd like to see some more wins.

Did he not have to take a year off? Or did he transfer without me knowing a couple years ago?
|3 days 21 hours ago||Brian,||
The job you and the others do on this site is irreplaceable. No one else in the blogosphere is even close. No matter what happens this year, never get down about how this site is run. Yes, there have been many faction battles over the years, but it is a sad day when I don't check mgoblog half a dozen times for new content, often sadly refreshing until the early morning hours, waiting for new articles the next day.

You don't think there was anyone more pissed off than Spielman!? How about anyone who cared about Michigan. Yeesh.
|5 days 18 hours ago||The thing about that loss is||
The thing about that loss is that the expectations were so high. It makes me physically sick that Henne, Hart and Long never beat Ohio. My son was about 4 months old and he vomited all over the maize shirt I was wearing. I don't know where that shirt is, and I don't care. Like Dan Dierdorf, I just want Michigan to be "back" again, which for me is winning Big 10 titles and beating our rivals most of the time. As has been said ad nauseum, it's been awhile since Michigan football was anything resembling fun, although we did get a taste in 2011.

Ugh. Here's hoping they stretch defenses horizontally and utilize the short passing game to keep things as honest as possible for the run game....

Yes. Play action is a sort of constraint, but PA builds off successfully running the ball. Another frustration with Al was his inability/refusal to have PA off of the veer play that Michigan ran with different degrees of success for three seasons.

Dan wants Michigan football to get back to where it used to be? I think you're speaking for the entire fanbase, Dan. Hopefully this is the year.

So, if Michigan blows them out they look like a bully? Give me that reputation any day of the week and twice on Saturday. Yeesh. I attended whatever the hell that Akron thing was last year. I hope the O-line goes into bully mode and never stops until there is a heap of corpses in Columbus (figuratively speaking).

Great piece as usual. I think I'm in Brian's camp when I say that I think last year was worse than 2008. In 2008, even though it should never have been that bad, I had a feeling that it would be a rough year and things would get better. Offensively UM steadily became a machine while every shred of defensive competency fled. The frustration (for me) with 2011-13 was that while Mattison and Hoke revitalized the defense, the coaching staff scoffed at the very offensive formula that would have brought them more success.
There are different degrees of pain, and I will never insult another fan who hated the Rod years more than the more recent past, but for me it is torture to see a team that had the talent to do more and were so close only to see (in my opinion) the coaches fail them. Michigan isn't alone in this. Coaches on one side of the ball or the other are often guilty of putting square pegs in round holes. It just has seemed more extreme in our case as Michigan fans since 08. Anyone with eyes can recognize that playing Craig Roh at LB is literally one of the dumbest things ever. The same can be said for seeing Denard Robinson try to impersonate a pro style QB.
Personally I think whatever happens these next 2-3 years is all on Hoke. Borges was fired. Nuss appears competent. If the offense doesn't get better everyday from last spring practice on we just may have to face the fact that this might be the new normal. I don't think Michigan can handle another transition unless an obvious elite coach becomes available and the administration is willing to accept that coach if he isn't a "Michigan Man." I lean towards liking Hoke but he completely dropped the ball on the Gibbons fiasco. No more excuses. Put up or shut up.

I don't disagree. I think of "This is Michigan" as a statement of setting the bar high and refusal to settle. Like you said, nothing is given and nothing should be taken for granted, but even though Michigan hasn't met their own standards in a long time, that doesn't mean the AD, coaches, players and fans should lower what the standard is.

Just another symptom of a storyline driven culture. Good leadership isn't necessarily reflected in the win column. I think coaching and talent win games/championships. Just look at certain players judgement. If you think leadership has been a problem, you haven't been watching Devin Gardner keep getting up, even to the point of playing on a broken foot. Leadership can't change a bad play call. People would just rather blame something intangible than face reality.

Truly insightful stuff! Sounds like it takes a little longer to learn the inside zone style in contrast to the outside "spread style" zone. I hope the guys learn quick this year....

Ah, Colin Cowherd, who loves win at all cost coaches despite their moral questionability. He claims Ohio is still a 10 win team which isn't impossible but claims Michigan is "done." I think it's amazing how analysts look at the previous year in their predictions even though many of the teams have high turnover. Let's just say I won't be surprised to see Ohio take a step back offensively and State take a step back defensively. If Michigan can become great defensively and the offense progresses over the year it could be a special season.

|1 week 4 days ago||The last thing I'm worried||
The last thing I'm worried about is basketball recruiting. Belein is an elite identifier of under the radar talent and I think you would be hard pressed to find any other coach who could've gotten the results Coach B did last year after losing what he did. Everyone is expecting the team to have a more difficult time this year, but if anyone can get this team on a run, it's Belein.

I was just thinking that if they ID the mike blatantly they could risk tipping their plays. Is there a benefit to IDing the mike on run plays other than to not tip off the defense?

Man, this makes me sick. I don't mind admitting I'm liberal for the most part, but the temptation of a few bucks has crapped all over tradition when it comes to uniforms. I'm glad the players like it, because someone's got to. I expect this from the traditionless like Sparty, but does anyone remember the glory of playing Ohio when they actually wore their traditionals? And their alternates are far from the worst. Yeesh.
|2 weeks 5 hours ago||Am I the only one who thinks||
Am I the only one who thinks the sports media is delusional at times? A young line, no Hyde, most likely no Miller and Ohio still a top 15 team? I guess I forgot how brilliant Urbz was without Timmy down south. Yes, I know this is different, but I'm not buying that they're not going to struggle quite a bit until I see it. Look at Michigan in Denard's senior year. If he had stayed healthy I think Michigan has a great shot to win the Big 10. Bellomy incident aside, DG was a unique talent. This Barrett kid may be talented, but I think he suffers some growing pains.

What amazes me is that ND fans have an amazing ability to wear blue and gold blinders no matter what recent history shows. I know every fan base has optimists, but I've heard ND insiders predict a 1 or 2 loss season consistently leading up to the season. The return of Golson will supposedly jump start the offense, but according to my memory it was Tommy Rees who bailed them out in Golson's freshman year repeatedly. Of course, according to the Irish fans "turnover Tommy" couldn't leave fast enough, but I remember Golson doing a whole lot of nothing against a Michigan team trying its best to hand them the game. I really don't know how ND gets to 7 wins let alone 8 with this schedule, but that's just me.
