I don’t think it’s just…

I don’t think it’s just player developent. Michigan has a “type” when recruiting. They like guys who play multiple sports. They like guys who were captains. They like guys who are just good at football, not necessarily how they perform in T-shirt and shorts. They like guys with certain physical traits. It’s not about recruiting rankings.

That’s how you flip a Mason Graham from Boise State. That’s how you get a 3* Kenneth Grant and call them gifts from the football gods as true freshmen. That’s not development, that’s having a system and doing it better than the recruiting sites do it.

Michigan is certainly good at player development, and there’s no reason to believe that’s going to change. But I’d argue Michigan has really excelled at talent identification.  If you’re looking down on Michigan’s 23 and 24 classes, you’re not paying close enough attention to the details.

I don’t think “Assistant…

I don’t think “Assistant Director of Recruiting” is going to move the needle much either way

To be honest I’d be way more…

To be honest I’d be way more concerned about Calipari than taking a shot on May. Calipari hasn’t done anything the last 5 or 6 years despite having elite talent at Kentucky… talent that won’t be available to him at Michigan.

As an in-game coach, it really looks like the game has passed Calipari by. Tremendous career, but he’s won just a single NCAA Tournament game in the last 5 years with the crazy talent Kentucky brings in. Id have a really hard time seeing him translate to Michigan.

How exactly was this a mess…

How exactly was this a mess of his own making? Last I checked, Juwan cratered the program, not Warde.

Beilein left incredibly late in the cycle, meaning all of the top college candidates were off the board. Juwan Howard was universally lauded as the top candidate. Years of experience as an NBA player, considered a fast rising coach among the NBA ranks and cut his teeth as an assistant under arguably the best coach in the league.

Juwan was the right hire at the time and the success was there initially as well. Now that it’s not, Warde moved on from him in a timely manner.

I mean, what more could the…

I mean, what more could the guy do here to get you to applaud the job he did? Honestly, it seems like AD’s get all the blame when things go wrong and none of the credit when they go well.

The questions surrounding…

The questions surrounding May have always been centered around sustainability. His first four years were pretty “meh.” Excellent by FAU standards but not exactly something that would earn you consideration at a top job. Now there are reasons the success was middling in those four seasons, but the results are what they are.

The last two years have obviously been the type of years that WILL get you that consideration. But with just two of those seasons there are valid questions surrounding whether that success is sustainable. Especially with this past season bringing everyone back from the Final Four team.

Compared with other candidates, Niko Medved took over Furman and went from 9 wins to 23 by year 4. At Colorado State he went 12-20 in year 1 and has won 20 games twice and 25 games twice in the 5 seasons since, making the NCAA tournament twice. DeVries took over a .500 Drake team (ironically from Medved, who was there one season) and aside from a 20 win season in Year 2, has won 24+ in each of his other 5 seasons with three NCAA tournament appearances.

So there were some other candidates with longer track records of success that I think many fans found attractive in comparison to May. I think the signs were there for May that he was building a team that could consistently compete for NCAA appearances, but it’s also fair for the question to be raised after two years.

Star receivers would rather…

Star receivers would rather go to an offense that’s going to feature them as part of the offense and put up big numbers and get drafted high. Most years our top receiver has like 600 yards and nobody else cracks 500.

Star WRs don’t really care if you won a national title last year. They want to get the ball and get drafted. Not block for your running back so the team can win. That’s the reality. Anyone worth a damn entering the portal will be doing so to showcase their skills and increase draft stock. Easier to do that in a pass heavy offense than at Michigan

It’s not really his fault…

It’s not really his fault players have transferred and/or switched positions.

Recruited since 2020 and no longer on the team:

Henning, transfer. Dennis, position switch and now transfer. Anthony, transfer. Dixon, position switch. Clemons, transfer. Walker, position switch and transfer. Now English.

Add in Wilson going to the NFL, and holding onto Moore, Morgan and Morris and the incoming freshmen, and that’s WR recruiting. We simply haven’t brought in transfers at WR to replace the departures, but it’s also very difficult to get quality transfer receivers to come play in this offense.

Well there are risks with…

Well there are risks with every coach. I’m merely stating how there are concerns with a guy that went 66-56 through his first four seasons and whether he can create sustained success. That’s a fair concern for someone with such a short track record of success. Especially considering he returned the whole team that went to the final four and lost in the first round to Northwestern.

I’m not looking too much into that specific game or downplaying him as a candidate, but I see validity in the concerns and a desire for someone who has shown a bit more sustained success.

People were already turned…

People were already turned on from his entire body of work at Colorado State (Furman as well), the Virginia game certainly helped, but it wasn’t the only source of the hype nor the origin of it.

He was mentioned as a top candidate well before that Virginia game

I would do a lot of things…

I would do a lot of things for $500k+ per year

Similarly, many people are…

Similarly, many people are turned off to Medved after their game against Texas. Wild how many people will look to individual games to evaluate the candidacy of a coach.

Their run in the tournament…

Their run in the tournament was special, but they really didn’t beat anyone of note IN season. Best win in non-conference looks like a 2 point win over a Florida Gators squad that finished below .500 and then ran through a pretty weak C-USA. 35 wins is still incredible but it was a pretty easy schedule as well.

He then returned virtually the entire team from last year and they had a worse season. The rest of his career has been mediocre at best, and I think there’s some valid concerns with a candidate with such a short track record of success.

Yes because it’s the…

Yes because it’s the hypothetical based on the criteria that you set out. Make the tournament, pull an upset. That’s enough to be a candidate in your eyes, regardless of the entire body of work

So again, you want to ignore…

So again, you want to ignore the entire body of work based on the outcome of a select few individual games… yeah that’s ridiculous. A coach with a losing record would be a candidate in your eyes because of the outcome of two games.

Your logic isn’t sound at…

Your logic isn’t sound at all. Brown could have easily fit your criteria with a losing record. You didn’t touch a nerve at all, it’s just a ridiculous take.

Hence why I said “Either he…

Hence why I said “Either he’s a candidate for his whole body of work, or he’s not.”

The original comment was that he made the tournament and won a game so he should be a candidate. That’s an absolutely insane way to evaluate coaching candidates. He quite literally said he’s fine with every coach with an upset win being a candidate. Ridiculous

Literally just have to win…

Literally just have to win your conference. Which 13-18 Brown was also in position to do and WOULD have done if not for missing those two free throws and a last second shot by Yale. So yeah, it absolutely can come down to winning a single random game or two.

So, by your logic, had Brown won that game to go 14-17 and upset someone in the tournament, that would be enough to consider their coach for the Michigan job… you see how ridiculous that sounds?

Is it also skill to be in…

Is it also skill to be in position to lose your conference championship to a 13-18 team in the first place? It’s incredibly short-sighted to sit there and evaluate someone’s candidacy on the outcome of single games.

Either he’s a candidate for his whole body of work, or he’s not. Winning a random game or two isn’t relevant to coaching ability or running a program

Seems random and unwise to…

Seems random and unwise to consider candidates solely for winning a weak conference and winning a single game in the tournament.

You’re effectively saying that he should be a candidate because 13-18 Brown missed two free throws to ice the game and Yale made a last second jumper to win th Ivy League and make the tournament… Brown makes those free throws, Yale doesn’t even make the tournament and you never hear this guy’s name brought up.

We’re really sitting here talking about a future doctor or lawyer missing a couple free throws determining who our coaching candidates are.

Possibly, but I also think…

Possibly, but I also think Michigan has some selling points with some candidates.

First and foremost, the opportunity to coach THIS defensive line is a great opportunity. It’s an upgrade for virtually every DL coach in the country.

Now, for Ryan Osborn specifically, Michigan could easily double (or more) his salary. He’s making $260k as Charlotte’s DC right now. He has familiarity with the scheme and some of the players already so it would be a generally smooth transition for him.

Zero % chance Moore gets…

Zero % chance Moore gets this far into his first spring practice as HC without already all but knowing who his QB is.

They’ve had like three practices… this is an insane take. You’re giving zero time for any of the QBs to show what they can do or any improvements they make. which would mean Tuttle IS starting. Because he was better than Orji and Denegal last season.

Pass.

A friend of mine…

Pass.

A friend of mine is loosely connected to the MSU program and from what he’s told me, the guy was regularly late to work/meetings. His strength is working 1-on-1 with guys to develop their skillsets, but struggled in the team setting, with film study, and installing the scheme. The other side of that is his strength lies entirely as a pass rush specialist. So you’re not even encompassing the whole role of a DL.

It’s third hand information so who knows, but it’s probably pretty telling that he’s in an off-field role at OSU and no longer in the NFL or a position coach elsewhere in college.

What is interesting to me is that because he’s not in a countable coaching role, he’s not actually allowed instruction time with players. So while on staff at OSU, he’s not allowed to train OSU’s DL.

He had one in college, then…

He had one in college, then one in his first or second year in the NFL which was dropped to reckless driving in a plea deal

I don’t know that I’d equate…

I don’t know that I’d equate being a position coach with being a head coach

There’s really no reason for…

There’s really no reason for him to take wildcat snaps as long as Orji is on the roster

It’s very well within reason…

It’s very well within reason that you can drink responsibly and still blow a .08

A couple glasses of wine with dinner could put you over the limit, though I doubt many would call that irresponsible drinking.

I think we need some details before calling the guy irresponsible

Someone edited his Wikipedia…

Someone edited his Wikipedia page, he’s currently coaching the “Greater LA Adult League Team.” Hopefully his buyout isn’t too large

Okay but here’s the thing…

Okay but here’s the thing. Basketball is profitable. It makes sense for a school to invest heavily in a sport where the return is a larger profit. There’s a reason Gonzaga chose to invest in basketball and not baseball

It took a fan base and alumni group

Yeah, we also do not have that when it comes to baseball. Once again, you’re making an apples to oranges comparison.

Football's success and our schools power + cash isnt a detriment to Baseball and its potential

It’s not. Michigan’s geography, recruiting base and concerence are a detriment to baseball and its potential. Because of that, it doesn’t make sense for Michigan to spend a boatload of money there.

“Not the same guy” doesn’t…

“Not the same guy” doesn’t imply he’s QB1 material. Nor do I expect a coach to publicly rip a player’s abilities anyway. What did you expect Campbell to say?

They rotated scout team QBs…

They rotated scout team QBs throughout the year to fit the style of play of the other QB. Orji simulated Milroe because they had similar styles of play. I believe it was Warren or Denegal simulating Penix and McCord iirc.

I don’t know where you think…

I don’t know where you think a top-tier starter is going to enter the portal from or why they would join an offense like Michigan’s if they did.

I don’t really think…

I don’t really think basketball, which essentially IS the national identity of Gonzaga, really compares to baseball here.

Calling Dillon Gabriel just…

Calling Dillon Gabriel just a high floor QB is weird. The guy has 15,000 passing yards, 125 TDs and 26 picks at 8.9 YPA. He’s an electric QB with a ton of talent.

Dante Moore isn’t improving enough in one offseason to surpass that.

Well it’s more than just…

Well it’s more than just high school stats that give the impression that he can’t throw. We’ve seen him in spring games, it wasn’t pretty. We had four QBs attempt a pass last season, he was not one of them.  There’s far more data saying the kid struggles as a passer than there is saying he’s competent in that area.

They put Orji in games. He wouldn't have gotten time in the playoffs if he was not considered as part of the present and future of the program

Okay but none of that points to him being a starting QB. He was put into games because he’s 240 lbs and freakishly athletic. He was put on the field to use that athleticism and size as a runner. Nobody said he’s not part of the present or future of the program. There are plenty of roles he can fill that don’t include being QB1.

Now obviously he can develop the arm and learn to be an all-around QB. But nothing we’ve seen has suggested he’s close to that point.

Don’t get too caught up with…

Don’t get too caught up with the rankings as far as predicting matchups, the committee will alter opponents/regionals to fit geography and avoid inter-conference matchups in opening games, so all we really know for sure is that we’ll be a 3 seed

That’s not true at all…

That’s not true at all. People metabolize alcohol at different rates and alcohol tolerance plays a part as well. For someone who regularly drinks alcohol, their body becomes accustomed to having alcohol in the system and it would take more alcohol to affect the system.

What that DOESN’T do is alter the BAC levels. .08 is the legal limit regardless of the effects it has on that particular individual. But not every individual will experience the same effects at that level and plenty of people function the exact same after 2-3 beers as they do without alcohol. Hell, some alcoholics get to the point where they actually need alcohol in their system or they get uncontrollable shakes.

I think a lot of people…

I think a lot of people clutching their pearls right now don’t really understand how easy it is to reach a .08 and how functional many people still are. I’d wager many of us have reached that threshold and had no clue. It is a very low threshold and many people aren’t affected by alcohol at that low of a level.

Alas, if Scruggs was out late, that's probably not what happened here. He likely had more than a light buzz on

But that’s speculation, and it isn’t really fair for us to sit here and call for a guys job on speculation. That’s why I’ve been sitting here saying we need to wait for the details.

Scruggs had to be pulled over somehow, which suggests that he was driving erratically.

He was also out driving at 3am on a bar holiday weekend in a college town. Safe to say a completely sober driver would have caught the attention of the police. I’ve been pulled over twice in Ann Arbor simply for being out around 2:30 on a weekend. Could he have been driving erratically? Yup, but it’s completely speculation at this point.

That’s not any more…

That’s not any more effective though. He was charged with drunk driving, taking a test in a courthouse the next day or an at home test isn’t going to prove he was drinking and driving.

Unless your implication is that he’s completely barred from drinking, it is ineffective and an overreach. Barring him from drinking entirely, would also be a massive overreach.

For all those saying "We don…

For all those saying "We don't know what he blew," it doesn't matter.

Okay but it DOES matter. Nobody is saying he shouldn’t be punished. He should. He broke the law and it’s a repeated offense for him. But there’s a vast difference in what that punishment should be based on what he blew and the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

He should not receive the same punishment for blowing a .09 and complying with officers as he should for blowing a .24 and being belligerent and uncooperative. Not to mention the unreliability of breathalyzer tests to begin with. That’s why “we don’t know what he blew” is being brought up.

Well for starters, he was…

Well for starters, he was only convicted of one DUI. He pled not guilty to a second and accepted a reckless driving charge.

The DUI he was convicted of occurred over a decade ago while he was in college. How long do you think a dumb decision a college kid makes should be held against him in the employment world? Keeping in mind how notorious college kids are for doing dumb shit.

I mean I don’t have an issue…

I mean I don’t have an issue with removing a drunk driving charge that occurred in college from someone in their mid 30’s. Dumb kids do dumb things and I don’t think a non-violent charge should follow you to the grave.

Well if you set the limit to…

Well if you set the limit to .5, the drinker would be dead… and that’s over 6x the current legal limit…

Nowhere did I claim what day…

Nowhere did I claim what day of the year it was made it right or wrong. Simply that the guy was out drinking on a holiday weekend known for drinking and we don’t even know what his BAC was or the circumstances of his arrest.

.08 is pretty low, yet still illegal, and there are many people who experience zero adverse effects from a BAC content that low. You can have a glass or two of wine with dinner and blow a .08.

It is crazy to me how much…

It is crazy to me how much it costs a team to move up a few slots in the draft, and then the same players taken in those slots are worth nothing on the trade market.

Michigan actually has a time…

Michigan actually has a time frame where violations are wiped off your record. This will be treated as a first-time offense

B) what is he doing out at…

B) what is he doing out at 3AM during his first week on the job

It was a Friday night and he’s a grown man.

I don’t know what state you…

I don’t know what state you live in, but Michigan has more severe penalties for individuals who blow twice the legal limit (.17+)

This seems ineffective.

This seems ineffective and an overreach. He’s not drinking on the job.

When is he being tested? You gonna put him on house arrest after you test him every day?

Sorry about your friend, but…

Sorry about your friend, but that doesn’t overrule science or the law. Both of which say there’s a world of difference based on your BAC. Harsher legal penalties with higher BAC, and more severe functional impairments with a higher BAC.

So… yeah there’s a difference. Capisce?
