Could not agree more!
Kalis has been less than great here, I don't care about stars, put the best players on the field. If Burzinski is better, play him. Now I think Kalis is banged up, along with Pipkins.
We should be excited that we have lower ranked guys working hard and passing higher ranked guys. It shows our coaches also know how to find some diamonds in the rough.

People need to chill out. Pipkins is not 100% yet or he would be starting, Kalis is banged up too. Ryan an OR with Morgan is no big thing IMO, Morgan has been a starter and it's a new position for JMFR.
Looks like Royce Jenkins had a great camp, we know Ross is a stud so it's excellent news that Royce Jenkins is right there with him. Chesson played well last season and is a starter, that's a good thing.
Peppers is going to get plenty of playing time. Why are people freaking out at this?

37? Seems a little low. With our defense and Nussmeier calling plays on offense, there is zero chance we finish the season out if the top 25.

Does anyone know off hand if Funk has experience with a zone blocking scheme? It seems we brought in a new offense, but kept the same weak link from the previous offense, unless Funk has had some success in the past coaching zone blocking schmes I don't see the logic in keeping him this past off season.
At this level, it's the little things that make the difference. You cannot be learning on the fly and expect to not miss the details, those details are often the difference between winning and losing. Championship teams generally have a system installed for years, they may tweek it betweeen seasons and even change some staff, but wholesale chanes take time. I think our D tweeked some things, but kept the same general defense, I think the offense is gong through wholesale changes, it's going to take time to have a championship level offense.

I still have big concerns aout our D line. Weren't we last in the conference in sacks? What makes people think we're going to go from the worst pass rush in te league to the top 3rd of the league? Clark is a good player, Henry showed some flashes, Taco could be a good player this year, none strike me as All B1G type players this year. I also think we are thin at DT with Pipkins still being brought back slowly. Will Pipkins even play more than a few snaps a game at this point if at all?
Again, I like our talent at D line, but just have yet to see a doiminant D line or something close to it. Which is what makes this tough. We are going to play some of the better D lines in the nation this year, ones that are clearly much better than ours, how is our O line going to look versus Michigan State or Ohio? Those are probably two of the top 5 D lines in the country, we're going to need to use a lot of Max protection to keep Gardner from getting killed. And without any run blocking again, defenses are just going to pin their ears back and come after our QB.
The defense is going to be good, no doubt. I suppose after losing both Lewan and Schofield we should have expected this from the O line. I hope I am wrong and we do have a totally dominant D line, that would be great for the development of the O line, to play against a top unit in practice every week.
Absolutely love Mason Cole and think he could be one of the greats here, but considering the guys on the roster, it's alarming that a true freshman could come in and not only get playing time, but start at left tackle and frankly look like our best O lineman. That's a scary thought.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||I've said it before,||
I've said it before, recruiting O line is very difficult. Just so much growing to do yet, really is the most unpredictable position to recruit.
I know we have a very good back 7, but are people forgetting that our D line hasn't been all that good? Like our talent there, but I have been very disappointed with their production. There is still no reason to think we have a dominant D Line, because we haven't had one in years. I'm afraid the O Line is just that bad. We have two weeks to get it sorted out. The team is built to run the ball, if we don't have an O line to make that possible it's a house of cards, might as well run the spread.

Hoke needs to dismiss York from the team immediately, if he plays for Michigan again it will be a travesty. After being kicked off the team, not only the legal process throught the courts should occur, but whatever disciplinary process the school can take to remove York from the University all together needs to happen. He assaulted and seriously injured a fellow student athlete.
And Jones? He was part of this too, he set the guy up, knew what was about to happen and I believe should face discipline too. Jones knew York was winding up, doesn't a decent human being try to at least stop their teammate from making a terrible mistake like this? And how about helping the victim who may have been laying their on the ground dying. His jaw was broke in 3 places, he lost a tooth, and suffered a serious concussion. He will likely be dealing with the effects of this attack for months if not years.
York is a gutless thug and Jones is a coward. I will never cheer for either if they ever see the field for us.

I am concerned like every other Michigan fan, but what can we do, we'll just have to wait and see what they put on the filed.
Anyone think that maybe not having an elite D line has hurt our O line's develoment? Really haven't seen an elite or even a good D line here the last couple seasons. These are the guys our O line practices against, they step it uyp and our O line will be forced to step it up. There were times last season when our O line looked totally overmatched and shell shocked, that doesn't happen if they are practicing against a top tier D line all year.
|3 weeks 12 hours ago||No idea why some fans get so||
No idea why some fans get so worked up over depth charts. Green and Kalis have to earn it just like everyone else does. Maybe Green is having a decent camp, but he's justy not as talented as the guys ahead of him? I know, I know, recruiting stars be damned, but sometimes lower ranked guys turn out to be more talented than higher ranked guys. Doesn't bother me at all that SMith and Johnson have possibly outperformed Green, in fact, that probably means we have some real depth because Green certainly looked like he was going to be at least a decent Big Ten RB last season.
Kalis is a little more troubling since he started last year, but then again I've always thought ranking high schoolo linemen is nearly impossible, too mcuh growing to do yet. It's why quite often top NFL draft picks on the O line will come from schools like Central Michigan, it's just extremely hard to project that one 6-5, 285 lb 17 year old is going to be better than another 6-5, 285 lb 17 year old 3 years down the road.
Overall, I'm glad our 5 star recruits are having to earn it, it's a good sign IMO. There have been times in the past where I wasn't so sure that guys weren't being named front runners for spots in part based on recruiting profile.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I think this year's defense||
I think this year's defense will be better, but top 10? WOuld be thrilled, but that would be a huge improvement from #41. Hoping for top 15, expecting top 20-25.
We'll miss some of the guys we lost, just because I relly like some of the guys coming in doesn't mean we won't miss Black, Washington, Gordon, Gordon, and Avery. DT is especially conerning for me as Pipkins has just now started precticing again so I don't expect him to be much of a force for half the season.
Love our LBs and love our DBs. Need to see more from our D line.

Terrible news because a Michigan Hockey player was seriously insured you dolt!!! Some of us root for more than two sports. And I could give a crap how it effects the depth chart, I care about how it reflects on our football program.

Terrible news, hope the victim is OK and back playing hocky for us this Winter.
I was really hoping Hoke could go several months without having another player in trouble. Michigan Football has been in the news for the wrong things far too many times in recent years.
York was at a bar, he's onl 20, hope he wasn't drinking.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||The change had to be made,||
The change had to be made, but I don't remember too many of us complaining after the IU game last year when we were 6-1 had just rolled up 750 yards and were on pace to break records.
Borges was a good coach, but for some reason he lost his mind for several games. I also think the MSU game robbed the offense of any confidence they had. Nussmeier has a nice pedigree and I'm anxious to see what he has in store, love his record with QBs.

Good post. Feel the same. Begrudgingly I have to give some respect to their program. Still cannot tolerate their fans though, it's been unbearable.

NSD 2016 is a long way off, but this still stings a little, not because I don't think we'll get our share of stud receivers, but because it appears MSU is now in on more national recruits than ever before. They've gotten lucky with some 2 and 3 stars, don't want to think about them if they start getting talent closer to what we get.
Chambers is exactly the type of player we are looking for, wish him luck no matter where he goes, except for one weekend a year.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||Not true, but I get your||
Not true, but I get your point, the services look at offers.
Kaleel Gaines, CB from Florida, offers from Bama, Auburn, Florida State, Ohio State, ND, Nebraska, TN, MSU, Penn State etc Kid is barely a 3 star recruit, 5.5 on Rivals, 84 on 247. I think some kids they totally whiff on and then they're almost too pridefull to admit it and rank him accordingly.
In the case of Gaines, it sickens me to say it, but Dantonio and Saban are probably the best defensive back talent evaluators at any level in all of football, wherever this kid goes, he's going to be a stud most likely. Unfortunately it will likely be for MSU and we'll all be wondering where the heck this kid came from in a few years when he's All-B1G.
What I find is extremely telling with the services is what they'll rank a previously unranked player who commits to one of the premier schools. Saw a zero star, unevaluated player debut as a 4 star a couple days after committing to Georgia. WTF? You're telling me the services just happened to evaluate him the same week he committed to Georgia? Not a chance, they looked at his height and weight, probably read a blurb about him, and maybe watched a 60 seconds of film on him and then said, "well, he looks the part, and he committed the Georgia, so, low 4 star!" Now the services know almost nothing about this recruit, but he's suddenly a 4 star and no matter how he performs his senior season in high school, 4 star will be his baseline. Kid could end up being terrible or he could end up being great, but there was zero reason other than where he committed for him to get 4 stars.
And I've seen it with guys who commit here too, I take it with a grain of salt.
I also think position matters too, some positions are much harder to evaluate than others. defensive back is tough, there are only a few good coaches in all of college at evaluating DBs. O linemen is also tough because of the huge size disparity between a top level lineman and who he is playing, you also can't predict accuratley how a big kid will grow into his body.
I feel we are getting some great players and we have some coaches who obviously have a ton of experience evaluating talent. But I don't get too excited about rankings.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||School is more important and||
School is more important and I think that they give stars out based on school the majority of the time, that's the only way the rankings have much predictive value. Certain schools are going to produce NFL players no matter what, a huge part of rankings is looking at those schools and ranking accordingly.
Plus, I think it's harder and harder to separate the top 500 players or more, sure, the top 50 are clearly a cut above most of the time, but with the internet you have more players with access to the best training methods, more high school coaches learning the best coaching methods, and access to the types of diets you need to have. There are absolute elite level athletes all across the country who get overlooked. The large number of great athletes makes it tougher and tougher to predict who will be great in college. There are more elite athletes that are ranked as 2 stars than ever before, some coaches excel at finding them.
And high school film is almost pointless to watch for us fans and likely most people who work for the services. Any mid to high level college recruit basically looks like a man among boys in high school. That goes double for linemen, what can you really tell about a 4 star offensive lineman who is pancaking guys that he outweighs by 70 lbs all game? I don't put much more faith in the services ability to evaluate high school film than I do myself, and that's almost none. You really have to be a skilled football coach to be able to correctly evaluate talent based on film, and even the best get it wrong a lot.
Furthermore, the camps give a different look, it's elite talent against elite talent, but I find it amazing how different the guys from the services take will be from the coaches who are actually running the camps and putting these guys through the drills up close. It's like the guys in the stands think they know more than the coaches on the field.
We're always going to get our share of highly starred recruits, it's making sure we get the right ones and then fitting them into our system and developing them that will make the difference. But as for the recruiting rankings, it's more of a crapshoot than at an y other time in history.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||Well, that's a little||
Well, that's a little disconcerting. MSU has definitely stepped up their recruiting, and why wouldn't they after the season they had last year, but this hurts us in the loing run if they can pull some top talent from Ohio, it leaves Ohio State to go after other players we want badly (Harris).
The only instate player that is a must get for us is Brian Cole IMO.
Anyone else get the feeling that a lot of recruits are waiting to see how our season goes? Get things back on track and I think we land several of our top targets, struggle and we could see Cole, Weber, and Thompson go to Sparty as well as maybe some other guys already committed decommit.
This season is so damned important, not just for recruiting, but for Hoke's job, for Michigan's image nationwide, and for the future of this program.

Weber coming here would be great! Kid is a shorter back, but is explosive.
The only thing that really concerns me is he and his father's relationship with Curtis Blackwell, they are reportedly extremely tight, more like family than just close friends. Weber has said he's known Blackwell as like an uncle all his life.
Unfortunately, I don't think we're getting Harris, but oddly enough, most of the Ohio fans on the web seem to like this Scott better than Harris, maybe because he's the local kid. Either way, little brother seems to have gotten a decent player, wouldn't take him above Harris, Isaac, or Derrick Green, but he and Weber are near to the same level of player.

“@TomVH: ESPN 300 DB Shaun Crawford did say last night he is no longer a Michigan commit. Still considering Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Miami”
Suckola. Recruiting is such a painful process and an inexact science to boot. The trend of kids decommitting though is a bad one and we've missed out on some locks(Hand, McDowell) in the lasdt cycle that were even more painful than these decommitts(Harris, Campbell, Crawford).
All 5 of these guys were supposed to be wearing Maize and Blue. McDowell was a lock for over a year, Hand favored us until the last few days before his decision, Campbell no longer seems like a remote possibility, and Crawford and Harris are now long shots probably. What gives? We'll always get our share of talent, but these near misses are killing me.
|14 weeks 2 days ago||It's also a question of||
It's also a question of whether we're better than we were last season.
We lost our #1 WR and both tackles as well as some depth guys on offense. Butt is also coming off a knee. Love the Nussmeier hire, but will our players struggle to learn yet another new offense, there will be a learning curve, how much of one?
Defense should be better, but let's face it, the defense was mediocre at best last year. One of the worst scoring defenses in school history. Lots of talent, but we did lose both DTs and the Gordons who made some plays for us. Also, it seems like there's a ton of shuffling of positions for players, and a total reshuffling of the position coaches on defense. This could all work out great, or it could all work out poorly, there are some onknowns on defense.
This coaching staff hasn't demonstrated that enough of our players are improving year after year. This is year 4, I feel like we've got more talent, but less proven talent than ever before. It's one thing to be a high school star, it's another to have shown that talent on the field in college. Just not a lot of proven performers, we need to have at least 10 players who haven't been great for us take a hiuge step forward this year in order to compete for the B1G title. Players like Kalis, oesch, Green, Smith, Darboroh, Pipkens, Lewis, and a few others.
On a good team in a good program, you get big steps forward every season from 10+ players. Just have not seen that under Hoke so far. We've had a few guys progress here and there, but not the wholesale dramatic improvement that we need to see each season to start competing for titles.

Maryland had just as good of a season as we did last year and returns more starters than we do. They had road wins @West Virginia and @ Va Tech, also a couple other good win. Maryland is a good team and will give us all we can handle. If it was at Maryland we would be a clear underdog.

Staee was at 9.5 and Ohio was at 10.5 FWIW. Those teams are pretty close IMO, State's out of conference trip to Oregon is why they are different.
|14 weeks 3 days ago||I am pragmatic, but I think||
I am pragmatic, but I think the over is a good bet. 8 or 9 wins.
Like I said, I see some tossup games, tossup being less than 60% chance of win either way IMO, but having underrated Maryland and Utah teams come into the Big House makes them wins IMO. Penn State at the Big House in a revenge game I count as a win too. Northwestern is a tossup on the road. IU could be a tough game on the road. ND, MSU, and Ohio State all on the road is very tough, but I think we win 1 of 3 at least. I just see 9-3 or 8-4, I would be very disappointed with 7-5. That would likely mean that either Maryland or Utah beat us at the Big House.
Maryland is under rated, we cannot overlook them, they return their team intact and had some real good road wins last season.
|14 weeks 3 days ago||I think it's a fair||
I think it's a fair assessment, but I think we can easily outperform it. We have several games that are tossups, if we can improve significantly from last year we can easily sweep those tossups and end up 10-2 or 9-3. If we don't improve all that much it could be a long year.
9-3 and 10-2 predictions are fine and I think we have a real chance at that, but the reality is that 8-4 would be a pretty good season at this stage given our youth and our schedule.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||Hope we land Harris still||
Hope we land Harris still because I would be shocked if Weber came here considering his family's relationship with Blackwell.
|15 weeks 15 hours ago||I don't get excited about||
I don't get excited about landing or potentially losing a recruit. If we win on the field everything else will take care of itself. If we don't win on the field this season it's not because of lack of starry recruits it's because our coaches aren't developing starry recruits properly.
That being said, the negative recruiting is starting to piss me off. Urban is the most notorious negative recruiter in college football and he''s behind a lot of what you are hearing and seeing. And it's not always to try to get a player to sign with Ohio, he knows that getting a player to not go to Michigan is important too. If he can get a stud corner to not go to Michigan it's a win for his team. The gloves are off, Hoke and company need to hit back.
|15 weeks 4 days ago||Not sure what you're looking||
Not sure what you're looking at for stats, but we were 32nd in the country in total defense in 2013. Ohio was 57th though.
That is below average for a Michigan team and far from where we need to be. Where we really fell down though was scoring defense, 61st in the country and one of the worst scoring defenses in school history. Ohio State was 33rd in scoring defense.
I think the two teams had comparable defenses, we were a little better in total defense, while they were better in scoring defense.
I think Mattison deserved a lot more criticism than he got, it was a bad Michigan defense and one of the worst we've ever had in terms of surrendering points. People got it in their heads that Borges was the devil though even though half way through the season we were having a historical year offensively and were poised to rewrite the school record book. We got beat up in East Lansing and our offense didn't do squat most of the rest of the season and Borges took the fall for it, but IMO Mattison coached one of the poorest non Rich Rod defenses that Michigan has had in my lifetime and skated away free of any tough criticism.
I know RR lowered the bar, but since when is 32nd overall and 61st in scoring defense acceptable here?

Sometimes you take the local kid who wants to be a Wolverine. Seems we are neglecting instate recruiting, that is not smart IMO.
Also, Josh Alabi named his top 3, MSU, Wisconsin, and Tennessee. We didn't make the cut and reportedly this kid's whole family was pushing him here.
