Defend Hoke all you want, but is there anyone stupid enough to think that Gibbons had an actual injury for the Ohio game? Hoke is a good man, but he handled this wrong. And as far as not having anythiing to do with the team. Are you all crazy? The team I pay to go see every fall, the program who I donate money to, the school whose gear I shell out hundreds to wear lied to me about one of the players being found guilty of sexually assaulting a fellow student and fellow Wolverine because it was easier for them and better fo the program I am assuming.
Gibbons had some undiclosed muscle pull so he couldn't pay against Ohio? I'm not buying that for one second and neither should anybody who supports U of M athletics. And if by chance it comes out they knew of the verdict before the Iowa game and played Gibbons anyway...
This all stinks to high heaven and Hoke and the administration behaved like they thought it was never going to come out. If not for a leaked document, we all just would have went on thinking Gibbons had pulled a muscle and had to miss the last 2 games of his career.

The article is one guy's opinion. I don't remember anyone else saying that about the TE helping Lewan the whole season and there were a ton of knowledgeable guys watching.
|1 week 2 days ago||It's an interesting year. I||
It's an interesting year. I know we all like to buy the hype, but I think we all need to be realistic.
Any win @MSU, OSU, or ND would be considered an upset win for us.
Sure, I think we should win most of the rest of our games, but we barely beat NW, lost to PSU, and Maryland has more returning than we do and they were just as good as we were last year. Utah is also a game we should win, but it is no gimme, they beat Stanford last year. So while we could easily be no worse than 9-3, a couple of close losses and 7-5 is possible too.
We lost a heck of a lot on offense and we've installed a brand new offense. That's a recipe for trouble on any team. And we somehow will have a much younger O line than our worst line in team history.
Defense is pretty stacked, but we do lose some key contributors in our DTs and the Gordons. Still, the defense has the potential to be fantastic and it's why I think we are more likely to be at that 9-3 or possibly even 10-2 than that 7-5.
Either way, Hoke has a tall task and if he can get these youngsters to win 8 or 9 games, I think he's done a good job. If we only win 7, but a couple of the losses were well played nail biters, I also think he's done a good job.

Why is he transferring in the 1st place? Is he good enough to start here if he's not good enough at Alabama? We actually have a decent center IMO in Glasgow.
Seems like a big to do about a former 3 start recruit who's been a career backup.

The depth chart will change.
Like everyone else here, Kugler and Thomas are puzzling to me. Kugler may have been hurt, but Thomas is supposed to be a 5 star and he played last year, I expect him to contribute and push to start as a sophomore.
|1 week 5 days ago||It was one scrimmage, we||
It was one scrimmage, we can't blow it out of proportion.
That being said, it was obvious we are installing a new offense and I don't care if they say they've installed 85% of it, we saw hopefully only 30% of it Saturday. The skilled players 100% looked like they were in the early stages of learning a new offense. From what we saw, it seems like we're going to be a little more vanilla on offense, less spreading the defense out and less misdirection plays. Going to be more smash mouth football. That might take a while to take hold, but I think it's high time we found an identity and stuck with it 100%. If I see read option more than once or twice, it would tell me we're still searching for an identity on offense.
Canteen looked very good for a kid who's still supposed to be in high school. The O line looked bad, worse than last year so far. It seems to me a zone blocking scheme is going to require the RB to make the 1st guy miss, if he can do that, then he can gain big yards. Hayes obviously looked the best of the RBs. Smith looked OK. Green? Wow, he looks lost out there, I thought we'd see a better Derrick Green, he's got a long way to go to get to 2nd string IMO. Extremely disappointing. We get excited about 5-7 yard runs now, that used to be the norm and then we'd get excited about someone busting off a 20+ run.
We desparately need Butt to come back, we have no TE threat without him, none. The lack of offensive weapons is disconcerting. You cannot compete for a B1G title with 1 or 2 threats on offense, we need 5 or 6 playmakers. Fuchess and Gardner didn't have their timing down, but that will improve as they learn the offense, lots of work to do.
Defensively, we looked good. The D line is doing a good job of eating blocks and the LBs are running down hill. Love that our DBs seem more aggressive. Only concern I have is a lack of team speed on defense, but it's spring, so guys aren't playing a fast as they will.
I am thankful for the easy schedule, because we could have a tough adjustment to the losses we've had on offense and to the new system. My heart says 10-2 is possible, my head says 8-4 is much more likely. This team is still 1 year away, 2014 needs to be the season we define what we want to be, I want to see the staff stick with an offense even if it costs us a game or two, I'd rather finish 7-6 again and know for sure what we are trying to become than finish 10-3 and still not be sure if we're a spread team or a power team.
Oh, and Hoke gets a pass this year IMO. Just too many losses on offense, not enough upperclassmen, and a brand new offense, this is a rebuilding year and he needs to get it right for the future.

Was very pleaswed with what I saw. Line looked like they could get a good push, LBs filled holes and tackled well. DBs covered well.
Only area of concern from what I saw was a possible lack of team speed on the defense.

@kjstallworth: I rode to UofM just to hang with my teammates I'm #Spartandawgs all day everyday! End of discussion
Well, he was on campus though so who knows. Anything can happen. I honestly think that if we have a good season this Fall and MSU falters a little that we'll go right back to dominating the state in recruiting.

Awesome news on Canteen. Too bad on Harris. He's missing a toof football for a hamstring injury. Would like to be able to redshirt more guys, can't keep playing so many freshman, it hurts you in the long run. Need to have a team with a bunch of 5th year guys to compete for the crown.

Sparty slappies are reporting he signed a B1G tender on national signing day, basically meaning any other B1G school was off the board because he'd have to sit out a year then.
What the heck? Why the heck were we still wasting our time on him? And what the heck was Sam Webb talking about? If he did sign the tender with Sparty, there was zero chance he was going to another B1G school. That would explain why FSU was in it late. Seems like some supposed recruiting experts completely dropped the ball on this.
Doesn't suck too much because we knew he wanted to go to MSu since December. But on the other hand it sucks really hard since he was a lock to Michigan for the better part of 2 years before that. Even when we lost hand, I was somewhat OK with it knowing that Malik was still coming here. Really a thin class on the D line. We basically have taken Taco Charlton as our only pure DE commit in 2 classes.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Good Luck||
Good Luck to the young man. He showed some character in holding strong to what he wanted. Honestly, if it would have been the other way around and this kid stayed strong to Michigan when his mother was dead set on him attendiing Ohio and was so vocal against us he would be immediately a cult hero in Ann Arbor.
Normally I would be upset to lose a 5 star recruit that we were the huge favorite for going back a couple years. And to lose him to MSU would be doubly hard, but this was a done deal back in December so I wasn't counting on him. Good to see he and his mother came to some agreement and he's getting to pursue his dreams at the school of his choice. Wish him the best in life, hope he is a total bust on the football field.
Damn, he would have looked so good in Maize and Blue, the exact type of huge athlete Hoke has been trying to build both lines around.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||The kid should be allowed to||
The kid should be allowed to play football where he wants. MSU is where he wants to be. His mother is actually harming his chances to play as a freshman now, there is no reason for it anymore.
If he had ended up at Michigan, I would have cheered for him and welcomed him, but that would have been really sad to see a kid forced into something he didn't want.

Done with Lewan. Good luck to him in the pros.
What can you say anymore? Too many issues, and anyone who knows people on campus still knows there were other incidents that never hit the press. He's a little immature and got into some trouble, hopefully he grows up and makes us proud from here on out because it's certainly been difficult to root for him at times.
|8 weeks 13 hours ago||Encouraging? We have a long||
Encouraging? We have a long way to go until encouragin is a word I'd use to describe our O line situation. What we're brining back on the offensive line I would deem discouraging. We are much less proven going into 2014 than we were going into 2013.
What did the interior of our O line prove last year? That they were the worst in the history of the school? That's about it.
I may be in the minority, but I would be more encouraged if none of the guys who started last year start this year, it will mean that we have better options than the worst group of O linemen in school history.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Don't like all the talk of||
Don't like all the talk of getting bigger at LB, we need more speed at LB IMO. But, to that end, Ryan is faster than Morgan, Ross is very fast, and Gedeon is big and fast, so maybe this makes us faster as well as bigger. I am warming up to this. The negative is that we're moving our best defensive player to a new and totally different position. That's an unknown. The positive is that this might make us both bigger and faster at LB overall.
Beyer belongs at DE IMO, not athletic enough to play LB.
Hey, this is a make or break year for a lot of players and coaches, no excuses in 2014. These guys need to perform or wholesale changes are needed.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||1 or 2 years ago if Hoke||
1 or 2 years ago if Hoke would have made the move with Ryan, there would have been zero questions even though at face value I don't like it. I would have just said, "In Hoke I trust."
Now, I just don't like the move, period. Ryan's athleticism is ideal for holding the edge and making plays, he's played the position his whol career and shown All American ability there. Mike is a totally different position that requires a totally differet skill set.
We'll see, maybe I'm wrong, I surely don't know as much about the position and about Ryan as our coaches do.

Hopefully they used up all their shooting, 17 3s for Sparty.
They also have 25 assists on 27 baskets, that worries me more than their hot shooting.
|9 weeks 11 hours ago||This story is not going away||
This story is not going away and that stinks. The fact of the matter is the administration is going to have to tell the public more about this or it's just going to foster more suspicion. We really don't know what happened as far as the program goes. Maybe they screwed up, maybe they didn't, I don't know because they don't think they caan talk about it.

All I care about is winning on the road Tuesday night. Drop that game and I don't see us winning the B1G title.
|10 weeks 14 hours ago||He obviously can play SDE||
He obviously can play SDE IMO, he's big enough right now. He'll put on some weight, but hopefully not too much, Taco is athletic and fast at about 265 lbs, keeping that athleticism and speed is more important in my opinion than bulking up to 285+. Speed and athleticism kills at the DE position, not bulk.

Didn't have much hope. Seems like a good kid, his folks seem a little overbearing and too publicly involved in his recruitment.
Glad he's not going to MSU, but man, sure seems like his parents don't want the kid to go where he wants to go, and thaat's never a good thing IMO.

I had heard the rumors before, but to think the University took 3 years to do anything about this is disgusting to me. I don't want to hear about a rule change, this was wrong.
And I also don't appreciate this being kept hush hush when he was missing the Bowl game.

McDowell is in fact visiting Sparty this weekend and he did in fact eliminate Ohio State too. Not been looking good for us for a while IMO.
Mone looked very good to me, but I guess he struggled mightily in practice at the UA AA game. One week of practice means nothing IMO, this kid is going to be great, I'm no less excited about him now than I was a few weeks ago.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||20 recruits count towards||
20 recruits count towards team rankings. So even if a school has 25 recruits, only 20 of them go towards the teams score. We still have a small class, I think it's a good class, npot what we've been used to in the last couple years, but still great for as small as it is.
And I'll take Peppers over any player in the country.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||Hopefully he comes back into||
Hopefully he comes back into the fold. Borges was the primary reason he committed to us, he had a very good relationship with him. I don't think we are out of this, but we have to rebuilda relationship with Harris and his family.
Damn, talk about ruining my Tuesday.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||LOL!||
Closet Sparty? Not a chance. Call it like I see it though, and I would be shocked at this point if we landed McDowell.
I'm basing this off this week's quote from McDowell himself, "I'm just liking Michigan State a lot right now," McDowell said. "It's all the coaches and there's a good chance I can come in and play early. Plus I like the type of weather here because it's cold. I like that." For a kid who has been extraordinarily tight lipped throughout the process, he's certainly sounding like MSu is his favorite.
Coupled with the fact that Dantonio will have an in home with he and his folks today and it's likely Malik is taking an official to MSU this weekend rather than LSU. He also talked about OSU being off his list now.
I think McDowell is an important recruiit for us. He fits what we are trying to build perfectly, but I just don't see him coming here.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||Thought McDowell was off the||
Thought McDowell was off the table for us now. He's visiting MSU next weekend instead of LSU. Would love to get back in it with the state's #1 recruit in McDowell, but it seems like he's made up his mind he is not going to Michigan.
