I really liked the insight about the linebackers watching a pulling guard and sucking up thinking run because of it. I know about play action of course but I don't think I had ever been looking for the O-line to fool the defense like that.

We are beating Ohio State. We faced an absolutely loaded team last year while employing a terrible defensive gameplan and we still hung with them for a half. This year we get a middle of reloading team....a team who will probably be a monster next year. Yep, they have a season to improve, but so do we. Look at our team from Utah to Florida last year and it's night and day. Be afraid of us. Excuse me while I run through this wall.

Where was Tom Brady then when I needed him as a positive hair model?!

I almost always hedge my bets when talking about Michigan.....and I'm saying we go 12-0 this year.
I feel we HAVE to win in Columbus this year because I don't know if I see it happening again anytime in the near future with the ridiculous talent they are bringing in and how much they lost in a year.
Nice to see your predictions though.

This is not a big deal. If we have the season we have the potential to have players as good or better will come back, hopefully including these ones.

Exactly! This makes it a much tougher decision for me. Not everyone can train in an Olympic pool but anyone can run. For Bolt to be the fastest person at running for 12 years is incredible. I still probably say Phelps but it's close.

A best and worst column?? Must be my birthday!
Neither MSU or OSU is going off a cliff.....but they just HAVE to be worse right? I just do not believe you can lose that much talent and be as good. I think we might be underestimating the talent of the players these teams lost due to being shell shocked from getting relatively hammered by both schools in the last ten years (especially in years we were supposed to improve!).
Connor Cook is the best Michigan State QB ever. EVER. Burbride is a pretty great WR too. All that talent lost from the trenches. Barring a near miraculously bad play by Michigan we BEAT a team with those players. A team we played to an even game got worse and we should be better.
And Ohio State I get it. They reload. But no one reloads that much that fast. They have the least returning starters in the country! I'm expecting a sophomore Tim Tebow at Florida season from them. Ridiculous young talent all over the place not quite ready for that big jump yet (and luckily they were also a team that lost to Michigan, woot). Ezekiel Elliott is a punishing force we no longer have to see. Joey GD Bosa is gone. Hell, like half of their starters were drafted.
JT Barrett is worrisome and I will get nervous if they can find a RB close to Elliott. And always playing them late in the year when they have had a chance to gel is tough...but this is Harbaugh and staff coaching. This is the year we appreciate how good this staff is because they make progress with the returning players unlike the regression under Hoke.

Lots of great answers so far so I'm going recent.
Unless I'm mistaken, didn't Alabama have a few years back Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, and Eddie Lacy?
They haven't had quite the success in the NFL, but that's an incredible trio for college.

Every year I get so stupidly angry about pundits and coaches solely judging last year for this year. It's infuriating how often the national championship contenders/winners of the biggest bowls of last year are ranked at the top of next year's preseason polls regardless of who they bring back.
I get it a bit if they bring back a big QB because that does cover up a lot of holes but....Alabama! I firmly believe this year we have the kind of talent and depth they have had in years when Bama did not bring back their starting QB and won the national championship.
Cannot wait for football to get here and see who is right.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||If you are using the criteria||
If you are using the criteria you seem to want to use to include Carmelo on this list then you cannot include Biles. So far, Biles has won team all around and individual all around gold and that's it. Yeah if she adds in something crazy like a gold sweep of all the rest of the events she is in I get it. HOWEVA, if you are saying she's been the best gymnast ever including her world championship gold dominance then....yes?
....but then you have to take off Carmelo from this list. Scoring the most points in Olympic basketball is a great feat but I probably would not include Carmelo in a list of the top ten basketball players right now. That cannot equal GOAT Olympic status.

I strongly disagree about the conference championship game not giving a clear benefit besides the money. I think last year Oklahoma making it in the fashion they did was more the deviation than the trend.
In a tie break, the number of games played is going to be a huge factor. If the other four conferences all have an undefeated winner, they are going to go over an undefeated Big 12 team because the number of games played. Not only that, the Big 12 team will put itself at risk of being passed up by Notre Dame which almost always plays a tougher schedule than anyone and maybe an undefeated team from a non power 5 conference if the Big 12 winner has one loss.
Yes, it has not happened yet, but it's the easiest and most sensible out for the committee to say.....well yeah you have the same amount of losses but you played one less game.
Don't forget the recency bias that plagues wayyyy too many people. A win in the last game of the season over a high quality opponent is counts (though it shouldn't) much than an early season win over that same team. With a conference championship game you are guaranteed a quality opponent in the season finale.
|12 weeks 13 hours ago||Okay I guess. Notre Dame is||
Okay I guess. Notre Dame is take it or leave it for me if we can replace with a similar quality opponent.
Notre Dame's fans are probably my least favorite in the entire country (God's on their side!!) so getting a break from talking to them has been nice.

I've been on the Michigan hype train for this year and I usually temper any expectations I have.
The schedule and rest of the roster just sets up so nicely for both the linebackers and the quarterback to get acclimated. They probably won't have to do too much for a while and now that I have seen Harbaugh and this coaching staff work I know that means they will get the players to improve.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||I thought I would miss Notre||
I thought I would miss Notre Dame more than I actually do. I'd be more excited to play new opponents for a while and bring back Notre Dame occasionally.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||I admit I'm rooting for the||
I admit I'm rooting for the Warriors, but it's getting ridiculous with the no calls. I mean if you are a ref and miss that foul on Iguodala at the end of the half with no other players around you should be embarrassed. Instead of possibly a 2 or 3 point deficit it's going to turn into a 6 point Cavs lead.
Also frustrating to watch all the Cavs offensive rebounding. The effort plays I think deserve to be rewarded for them but when they shoot a terrible shot and it bangs way off the rim back to their players it's hard to watch.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||I guess it depends how you||
I guess it depends how you mean worse.
It makes the Warriors look much worse that they got blasted and outplayed for two games. If they go out before the finals which is looking like a probably that's worse for the history books.
If you are talking about more gut wrenching though it's the Patriots. They were a few plays away from winning the Super Bowl and completing that perfect season. It would only be worse for the Warriors if they manage to make the next round and go out
|18 weeks 2 days ago||That Michigan running attack||
That Michigan running attack against Florida in the bowl game was nothing that I had seen from the team the entire year. Remember that Florida was a top ten defensive team too! Even if our yards per carry wasn't elite...adjusted for the defense we were up against it was excellent. We return most of that offensive line.
We got out schemed for sure against Ohio State because Durkin was too busy thinking about his Maryland head coaching responsibilities and stayed with what had worked against most other teams. Don Brown is not going to let that happen again.
Linebacker is a definite weakness that we have shored up a bit by adding Peppers there. Still, worry about injuries.
Our secondary is all back and should be elite. Almost everyone from the defensive line is back and should be elite...even before you add in the number one recruit in the nation Rashan Gary.
Almost our entire offense is back except quarterback but I fully trust in Harbaugh there who refilled the bare cupboard so we would have a capable starter back there. The quarterback will have a lot of veteran talent to help him get acclimated and a manageable early schedule.
No one can replace as much talent as Ohio State needs to replace and be as good. Something like 16 out of 24 starters?? Still dangerous of course but if you were going to pick a year to beat them in Columbus this is the one.
Michigan State lost a lot from both its offensive and defensive line, their star quarterback, and star wide receiver....and we had them beaten last year despite refs seemingly having it out for us and save for one bad play at the end.
I'm very much looking forward to this season.

Then the prevailing attitude where you were at is nonsense. Seriously, why wouldn't you want to have the greatest regular season of all time AND win the championship? Those two aren't mutually exclusive. If they were I would definitely agree with you.

I am also surprised at any Golden State dislike. Curry and Thompson are both very likeable to me. I don't see them bragging about being the best or being the champs or anything like that. You almost forget that they won it all last year. The "just a 3 point shooter" tag some have tried to offer up does not apply to either of them. The whole team plays unselfish basketball and good defense. I find myself really appreciating bench guys like Shaun Livingston and Mo Speights. Steve Kerr is great too. Draymond Green is the only player I could see some disliking but even he isn't so bad...especially for a Sparty.
Nothing is for sure, but I like the Warriors chances to get the record. They also are getting Andre Iguodala back by the playoffs which could be huge if only for his Lebron defense assuming they both make it that far. It's very hard to see the Warriors losing 4 out of 7 games to a team especially when one of those will have to be at their place.

I have some surprisingly great hops (probably two platforms less than Devin) but I'm jealous of DPJ making that height look so easy. Hope that's a good sign those two are hanging out!
After last year, I still am not understanding why we are not having our pick of the litter on TEs unless it's geographical reasons. How could you not want to play in the Harbaughfense from that position (or fullback too)?
