“He was on the other side of the court, screaming: ‘Good shot, Kev!’” Durant said, shaking his head in delight. “I’m thinking, this guy’s an All-American type of teammate right there.”

Watching the McNeese Nebraska game made me think Nebraska is just as vulnerable as we are.
Sparty held on vs. Oregon for the first half, and shit the bed in the second half. In their other games (Even considering their competiton) they have looked pretty darn good. Defense has taken a step back, offense has taken a step forward.

Genius. I see the Dayton in your name, but do you know where can I grab me a bulgogi burrito in the metro Detroit area?

I want carries split pretty evenly. maybe 16 Smith to 12 Green.
I imagine Green could have have a higher ypc by the end of the year, but I also feel Smith will have a higher median ypc, which is huge.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I disagree||
I have to imagine Glasgow is going to be in the lineup next week, and I think it's a 50:50 chance Cole or Miller comes out. Cole did a fine job against App St., but they listed his size as 275 lbs on tv(I know I've seen him listed as heavy as 292, but I think that's grossly inflated). I don't think 275 lbs is going to hold up against the more talented DEs our LT could be facing.
I don't feel it's a wasted red shirt, because he could be our 6th man, who will probably see time down the schedule.

I'm outraged that Funchess is only 72nd rated on some espn list.
Outraged. He should've cracked the top 50. Sure, he was 107th in receiving yards last year, and tied for 97th in TD catches, but our fanbases' preseason hype means more than that.

Is it possible that because they're high school kids and don't have collegiate or nfl size yet, their 40 times will be faster now?

That's the point OP was trying to make. 87 isn't unique to tight ends, a bunch of them wear it. 19 is much more unique, Funchess wore it.

I understand and appreciate what you're trying to do with this post: lighten the mood on a very depressed board as of late.
I think some people are too pissed off to enjoy the levity though.

He took a lot of hits last year. A lot. He played on a broken foot. I don't think anyone should question his toughness. Given the beating he took, I wouldn't be surprised to see anyone sit on the bench trying to take 'er easy until the next drive.

But what I think Kalis means is you never knew which of the 100 plays would be called next. There were a ton of different formations, and a ton of different plays.
You are referring to opposing defensive coordinators or players knowing if we were going to pass or run based on what formations we lined up in.

They're building a light rail to connect the two. Should be completed pretty soon, and should make the commute pretty easy.
|27 weeks 2 hours ago||Summarizing this thread||
There have been a lot of arguments made in this thread, and I feel like people are trying to get in their .02 with disregarding what has been said.
A coach doesn't have to have played a position to be able to coach it.
This is true. I don't know anyone that would make this arguement. It may help to have played the position, especially with a QB coach, but it's not necessary, and there are a ton of examples where this is true as posters have pointed out.
If a coach is a good coach, then they can coach wherever.
To a point this is true. All good coaches should have similar skill sets. I think we could summarize those skills/abilities to: motivate kids, teach them proper technique, teach them their assignments, correct their mistakes, and really get the best out of them.
But technique is not always technique. Blocking is different for WRs, RBs, FBs, and OL. I don't think I've ever seen a RB kick step, for them it's more striking and driving, or cutting.
If someone has really coached 7 position groups, great. But I feel it takes a coach some time to really develop the expertise to know everything they're supposed to correct, and the ability to have the athletes correct those mistakes, even if it's a bad habit they've developed. That's where it may not be good to have a coach bounce around between a half dozen position groups, and most coaches resumes dont reflect those kinds of movements.
NCAA or NFL coaching career:
Meyer is the only coach to coach on both sides, but it was only for one year as an OLB coach. Coaches seem to have a specialty, either offense or defense, and they stay there.
Now, to the thread title: Why Roy Manning is the New CB Coach
Would they move manning to CB coach because of the rapport he developed with prospective athletes, who haven't played a down of Michigan football yet? I don't think so.
I do think Hoke put it best when he said something to the effect of dividing the coaches up a little more based on how many athletes/position group are on the field at one time. When we go into nickel there are 5 DBs on the field with 2 coaches, and a front 6 with 2 coaches. In our base 4-3 package every coach has at least 2 athletes.
Last year, we had a linebackers coach, Mark Smith, and we had an outside linebackers coach, Roy Manning. So in our base package there were 2 coaches for 3 positions. For our nickel package there were 2 coaches for 2 positions.
Overall I wouldn't worry too much about moving Manning to CB coach. I know not everyone agrees with me, but I really like Mallory as a DB coach, and I think if Manning has any issues, Mallory can help guide him.

He's been coaching since '92 me thinks. The change to Carr, to Rodriguez, and to Hoke.
|28 weeks 6 days ago||Consistency||
We saw Michigan have a few good games last year against a couple top 30 defenses - ND, OSU. We've seen what they can do. Nothing we lost on offense is completely unreplaceable. The loss of Gallon can be mitigated with the stable or receivers we now have. Lewan hurts the most. Lewan is going to be hard to find a replacement for, but replacing both tackles is a lot easier than replacing all 3 interior linemen.
"The one thing that needs to be done isn't an easy fix - and the bodies and experience at the position aren't improving a whole lot."
The bodies can improve quite a bit. What makes you say they aren't improving a whole lot?
There is no question we still have a lot of youth on the offensive line. We have no juniors or seniors at tackle or guard. I don't know another NCAA team that can say that. But we have plenty of bodies there, and I think the competition is going to be good for everyone. To me, the starting lineup looks like it has a little experience and a lot of talent. Mags - Bosch - Glasgow/Kugler - Kalis - Braden. (Assuming Mags fully comes back from his shoulder injury)
Mags, Bosch, Glasgow, and Kalis all had meaningful snaps last year. I would make the argument that offensive linemen make their biggest jump from their first year in gametime - as long as they take enough snaps - to their second year. Their position coach really can go through their tape witih them from the previous year, and work on whatever errors they had. The bodies we have there are capable, and hopefully they had enough mistakes on film from last year for Funk to correct with them.
About half a year until they need to play.

|31 weeks 4 days ago||Can't be a roster management move||
Definitely not a roster management move. SIgning day was a bit ago, and we didn't oversign; we actually banked a scholarship. If you wanted to make the argument that it opened up a scholarship for the 2015 class, I still don't know if I'd be able to see that. Bryant is a RS Junior. After this season, if the staff didn't really want him on the team, they may have parted ways with him graduating after 4 years, and he could've played somewhere on a grad school schollie.
Saban's medicals upset me because his players will still transfer to other good schools and are competetive. Saban has all sorts of creative ways to free up scholarships.
|35 weeks 4 days ago||Walk-on scholarships||
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought when walk-ons are given scholarships, they're typically one-year scholarships. It wouldn't be pulling his scholarship, it would be not awarding him another one-year scholarship.
|36 weeks 1 day ago||Last I heard||
Last I heard about quality control coaches were from the Rich Rod era. IIRC, they were the ones overseeing summer practice sessions that got us in trouble with the NCAA with number of coaches that can attend summer events... or something to that effect.
Haven't heard about them in the Hoke era, but I imagine there were some in place.
