I don't know which sport you're talking about, but take a look at coachhuey.com (it's football). I'd go to the youth section and post your question there. They also have some threads on offense and defense at the youth level if you are coaching football (seems young for football, but idk).
I will tell you that your job as coach is basically to make sure that you have the proper number of players on the field. I've never coached, but I have reffed kids before, and it's a blast, but those kids have no idea what is going on. There is a ball on the field and they are going to try to do something to that ball, but that's about as much as you can expect out of that age group. I got into reffing for the same reasons that you listed and I think that's the right direction for you to go at that age level.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Lacrosse took care of this a||
Lacrosse took care of this a few years ago by making contact to the head or neck a mandatory penalty as well as also making certain situations like hitting defenseless players a severe penalty. The helmets now serve the purpose of protecting incidental contact and you get hit hard with penalties if they are made to be used for anything more than that.
I know they've done this for certain situations for football, but they don't enforce them often enough and the situations don't include enough of the game. If they made helmet to helmet contact illegal for linemen and leading with the helmet illegal for ball carriers, they could remove a lot of use of the head. However, that won't happen because "it would turn into flag football". Sure the game would change to more spread and less action in the pits, but you'd see a significant decrease in concussions and long-term brain damage.

Whose fault is that? These threads have been around for the last few seasons and it is obvious that there are going to be spoilers. If you are googling the books, then that's on you too. |5 weeks 3 days ago||"but this isn't late night||
"but this isn't late night porno’s on skin-i-max, its suppose to be a TV show, there is at least 1-2 sex scenes an episode now"
People have sex. It is counter-intuitive to hide it. Really this stems from the American culture where sex and nudity are taboo which is just odd if you think about it. In America, things get adult ratings for nudity and swearing too much. In other parts of the world, things get adult ratings for violence and gore, but I have never heard anyone talk about complain about how much gore is in the TV show.
Now, I do agree that some of the scenes are pointless. Loras' scene is the obvious one, although they did have some conversation about their plans going forward. Pod's brothel scene was another, although that led to some comic relief. Missandei's scene last season and the scene where the unsullied was killed are obviously there to build something between her and Grey Worm. A lot of these scenes are there for the transformation process of certain characters, so having them in the show rather than just alluded to is better way to go about the character development, IMO.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||The other thing about this is||
The other thing about this is that I think book 6 will end up being like book 3, where the dominoes fall, and book 7 will be bringing the series to its logical conclusion from there. GRRM writes the stories by character line, not chonologically, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is almost writing both together, then cutting them off each storyline where it makes sense. If that's the case, book 7 could happen relatively quickly after book 6 and, even if something were to happen to him, I would expect there to be enough there where someone could finish the story for him.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||So, here's the thing about||
So, here's the thing about the OL. If we have 7-8 guys that could potentially start, splitting them up for the spring game means that you likely have 3-4 guys on either team that are potential starters. That means you have 1-2 that probably won't and shouldn't see the field come fall. So, now you have 1-2 spots that are completely overmatched by our (what looks like it will be) very good defense. I think that if we had gone O1s and D2s vs. O2s and D1s so that your starting OL was in tact, we would have had a consistent run game and we'd all have a much better idea of how good we will end up being next year.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||I'm not going to say that||
I'm not going to say that this advice applies to every scenario, so you'll have to crunch your own numbers, but generally the taxes aren't going to make a big difference.
1) You have to itemize to deduct and you may not even meet the standard deduction in order to get any additional money back.
2) That cuts both ways. I could take the deduction money and put it all toward the principal of the 15-year loan and start investing in the full house payment in the market sooner.
Like I said, you'll have to crunch your own numbers, but the thing that might make a huge difference is where the money gets placed in the end, e.g. tax-advantaged accounts or not. Let's say we're talking $3000 instead of $1000. That's 36k that would be available for investment. If you were to invest all of that, you're talking 18k for a 401k, 11k for two IRAs, and 7k left over to go in a taxable account, which can make a big difference. 7k x 15 years is 105k that is now taxed at your marginal rate (say 25% for OP). Investing a little bit each year allows you to place more money in tax-advantaged accounts. The shelter from the 25% is huge because, when you pull the taxes out during retirement, the tax rate is your effective tax rate of ~10% instead of 25% so you get to keep more of that money.
Another thing that makes things difficult to calculate is when you're planning to retire. If you're planning to retire 20 years after purchasing the house, then the 30-year mortgage allows you to invest a little bit whereas the 15-year plan barely lets you invest anything and none of it gets the benefit of compound interest. The 15-year plan would reduce your expenses in retirement, but the 30-year plan would give you more available income.
tl;dr: almost assuredly not, but there are other factors that don't make this black and white, so do the math for your situation.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||The season openers are always||
The season openers are always weak. They are basically "remember this character? Look where they are now..."
Week 2 has the more interesting character stories and will probably have more interesting things happen.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||The problem with that is that||
The problem with that is that the 15yr loans are generally ~30% more per month, but you pay twice as long on the 30yr. So, the question becomes: is it better to save 30% for 30 years earning 6% (10% market - 4% APR) or 130% for 15 years earning 10%? I plugged those numbers (assumed $1000 payment for 30yr and $1300 for 15yr) into a calculator and the former came back with 302k while the latter came back with 545k. The amount of money that you give away to compounding interest at a higher rate for a longer period of time absolutely kills you in the long run.
The other part of that is risk aversion. If you lose your job, there is little difference between the payments on either mortgage. In reality, you can either continue to make them off of an emergency fund or you can't. Paying off your house after 15 years allows you to lower your emergency fund for 15 years. Lowering your expenses also allows to retire with less in your account, meaning that you could theoretically retire earlier if you wanted.
And, finally, as they say: would you be willing to take out a 4% loan in order to invest in the market? If not, then why would you keep a 4% loan open longer in order to invest sooner? It's the same thing.

But, that's a little different. You're only going to attempt a long field goal if you think you will get it. You can expect a 40-49 out of an NFL kicker in normal weather, but if the weather is poor, then you probably just go for it. A 50-yarder is going to be saved for the kickers who show that they make them on a regular basis or for the last minute of the game. You're essentially removing a lot of situations where you know you will not be able to make the FG, so those numbers are inflated. I think if you start making XPs 40 yards, you'll start seeing that move down toward 50%.

I'll do the same with Sling TV; I'll sign up for 4 months out of the year for football and march madness then cut it after that.
I do have OTA, but I can't find a good location to place the antenna in order to get good reception for all channels. Also, once HBO allows you to subscribe directly (they're halfway there), it'll make it much easier to cut the cord completely. Until then, though, these packages that have been popping up with Local, HBO, and Internet seem to be the way to go.

First of all, the first amendment does not say that you can't be punished for what you say. It says that congress cannot pass a law that abridges freedom of speech. A university is not congress.
Secondly, the amendment pertains at the federal level of government, not the state level. States can enact laws that limit free speech, e.g. the law that prevents men from swearing in front of women and children. Universities are entities under their state, not federal, goverment. Therefore, (by your logic) expulsion from a state university qualifies as punishment by the state government and therefore has nothing to do with the first amendment of the federal constitution.

I read the article last night and found it to be lacking in point. It almost read is if she was just saying "FYI, my family made this much and there's this thing called cost of living" but she never really tied it back to make the point that the cost of living ratio was probably relatively similar to other people. I think that's where she got into issues. Had she made that comparison and then compared the same salary and cost of living to those in, say, West Virginia or some poorer country, she might have landed the point home for some people.
As someone else pointed out, her family can sell their house and the equity could probably outright buy another house in a cheaper area of the country. This is actually a strategy that some people use to get to early retirement. Live on the coasts, earn triple the salary, spend triple on costs, sell house and have triple the equity when you move somewhere else. However, the same strategy is used by people who earn more money in the US and then sell everything and travel to low cost of living countries off that savings for years at a time.
tl;dr: I can't disagree with the assertions the author was making and I can't say that everyone criticizing her is wrong because they are both right in their points. She's talking cost of living ratio and everyone else is just comparing account balances. They're just different things.

Those cuts near the crease are a designed play by Detroit and they apparently ran it a lot last week against OSU. For those who didn't see it, a player runs down the right side and passes it to the X. The X then cuts around the other side of the net, causing his defender and goalie to slide. At the same time, the original player is cutting toward the goal. When everyone slides, he passes it back to the original guy for a quick dump into the net. Detroit scored 2-3 times on that in the first half, but they only scored once in the second half.
For those who weren't there, Michigan got up 4-0 in less than 6 minutes. There was some back and forth scoring until about 1:30 left in the half when Detroit scored with a flag down to make it 8-5 and cause the EMO. Detroit then clamped Michigan's stick on the faceoff, which was their third penalty FO penalty in the half, causing the delay call. Michigan basically ran the clock out after that and took over in the second half. I don't think it was as lopsided as it appears in the second half, though. I think it was just a steady stream of back and forth action and the better athletes prevailed.

I was screaming at the TV last night for them to take the TO, but I just thought of something. If you take the TO, you essentially give them 3 more running plays, which everyone agrees is Seattle's strength. By letting the clock run, Seattle could get at most 2 more running plays and doing so might cause them to accidentally run the clock out. Then, they come out in Cover 0 and dared them to pass. I think running into a box with 8 guys in it with 24 seconds left is about as likely to get you criticized when it doesn't work as calling a high-percentage pass against man coverage that ends up getting picked because of the perfect play by the safety.
Again, I'd have called the TO, but I just don't think it's as black and white as everyone else is making it out to be and maybe forcing Seattle to do something stupid was Belichick's plan the whole time.

Houma is a senior this year. An extra year of development under Harbaugh isn't going to help him see the field in 2016. Let him finish his degree and allow ourselves an extra recruit next year.
Da'Mario Jones is a junior. He's currently tied for 3rd string with a sophomore behind a senior and a sophomore all of whom were higher-rated recuits. If he redshirts, he's not likely to see the field over the next two years. Let him finish his degree and allow ourselves an extra recruit in 2017.
Mone is good enough to be on the field going forward. If he gets injured early in one of his seasons, he can redshirt.
Jenkins-Stone is good enough to see the field this year. Having 4 seniors as potential starters at LB is going to be ridiculous this year.
Dymonte Thomas will see the field this year as a second string or he will be behind Wilson, Peppers, Clark, and Hill. Even with Wilson leaving after this season, if Thomas ends up falling behind all of those guys, he's not going to see the field going forward other than special teams or as a sub.
What this basically comes down to is that you don't extend eligibility for guys unless you think there is a chance that they become starters. If there is a good chance that they become a starter, then you're going to get them playing time.

The penalties that you described have designated penalties within the game. The one we're dealing with has no penalty within the game. Cheating, to me, means breaking a rule, de jure or de facto, that is outside the scope of the game itself in order to gain an advantage in the game.

I'd just like to point out that this video starts with 11 seconds on the playclock. The line is already set, although, you can't tell if the receivers are. They don't snap the ball until 5 seconds left on the playclock. That's 6 seconds for the defense to read the alignment. That doesn't include the time that they had while NE was in the huddle or getting to the LOS. Just guessing here, but I'd say they probably had 15-20 seconds after the announcement to make adjustments and probably 10 seconds after the huddle broke to read the alignment. The way that they complained about it, you'd think it all happened within the course of 5 seconds.

|18 weeks 4 days ago||I specifically said personnel||
I specifically said personnel change instead of substitution because, to me, an offense's personnel consists of 5 ineligible receivers (usually linemen) and 6 eligible receivers (if you include the QB) and any changes within those groups are personnel changes. Declaring a RB ineligible and an OT eligible, is a personnel change in my mind. Specifically, the issue isn't that the RB is ineligible, it's that the OT became eligible. They can have that same alignment without any eligibility declarations and the main difference is that the OT wouldn't be eligible due to his number. So, the change that they made goes beyond a simple alignment change, which is why this is being discussed.
EDIT: Now that I'm reading more about it, they did change personnel. They brought the OT off the field and replaced him with a TE. That gave them 6 eligible receivers, so they had to declare one ineligible. How they got around the rule is they made the personnel change and allowed the defense to make their personnel change. Then, they declared the RB ineligible. At that point, though, I'm not sure what they could change in the rules to fix this from happening in the future. The only thing that I can think of is a ref standing over the ball for 5 seconds after the defense is alerted, however, watching a replay, it shows that the Pats were aligned with 11 seconds on the playclock and snapped it as it changed from 6 to 5. The Ravens had 5 seconds to get aligned and still couldn't do it. So, that just has to be on them at that point.

To me, this is akin to having 10/12 men in a huddle. Having someone run on/off the field just before the snap gives you a similar competitive advantage and it is illegal. To beat that rule, teams stopped huddling and started making quick subs, which didn't allow the defense to sub to match personnel. That was outlawed and, as I mentioned above, this kind of seems like an extension of that.
If they lined up that way, the defense had proper time to adjust, and the offense beat them because of the strategy, that's one thing. I can also see the argument that this isn't very different from just changing formations. But, I just think that this type of thing is taking advantage of a rule that doesn't exist yet and I'm generally not a fan of that type of play.

He wasn't upset with the way that the Patriots were lining up; he was upset that the officials were allowing them to rush to the line and snap it. I'm not sure if this rule exists in the NFL, but, in college, if the offense makes a personnel change, the officials have to allow the defense time to make personnel changes. So, I think his argument was that declaring oneself as an eligible receiver is a personnel change and the defense should be allowed time to adjust, which they were not getting.

Your points about the OC situation are spot on. I think Fisch is here for a year or two until he can get another OC position. At that point, you either promote someone to PGC or you have Drevno take over those duties. Maybe that's Ty Wheatley getting promoted in order to keep him around. Maybe it's another NFL coach with some OC experience. Regardless, this looks like a good hire for what we were looking for.

I think that if they hire Manning, he'll take LB and Durkin will take LB/DE. My guess is that if they go the 3-4 route, he'll take the OLB and Manning will take the ILB.

I don't know why it has taken so long for it to come to this. This a la carte method will end up costing people more money in the long run. This deal is essentially $20 for ESPN. OTA gets you the big 4 for no monthly cost. However, adding BTN 2 Go for Michigan only and throw in the $30 for internet and you are now talking $60/month just to cover sports. Then you throw in whatever HBO's new service is going to cost (let's say $10) and Netflix and now you're up to $80 to have a setup that covers most of your viewing, albeit with delays or quality issues for viewing most shows. At what point does it make sense to just pay for a cable subscription?

I've been saying this for a while: whoever comes in is going to look like a god. They're taking a team with lots of young and raw talent and (assuming they can coach) are going to be able to win a lot of games in year 1. I said this around the time that everyone knew that Hoke was getting fired. So, I agree with your diary 100%.
As for the people who are concerned about QB play next season, keep in mind that we don't need a gunslinger, we just need a game manager. On top of that, I would say improved QB play is the one thing that should almost be a guarantee each year for the next few years. Andrew Luck didn't develop in a vacuum and I'm also reminded of this article that I read in Harbaugh's first year at SF.
The way that Harbaugh does things makes things easier for QBs. While I'm not ready to call us a national championship contender in year one, I see no reason that we couldn't have 10-11 wins.

At this point, he either wants to come here or he doesn't. If he wants to stay in the NFL, then there was no chance at him coming here. If money is the goal, then he's not getting a better offer anywhere else. So, if he wants to come here but tries to negotiate more money, then he's just trying to sweeten the deal on where he wants to end up.
With that said, you don't budge from your offer, especially considering that he hasn't done anything for us yet. If he wants more money, then you put the clause in there that makes him the highest paid coach at whichever level he wins. That means if he wants to be paid more than Saban, then he needs to win a championship, at which point, pay the guy as much as he wants to keep him happy.

|26 weeks 16 hours ago||I am not saying that any of||
I am not saying that any of those things are necessarily wrong, but I think how you got to those conclusions is not necessarily right and you might end up being disappointed because of that.
I went to see him play a couple weeks ago when they played Groves and it was brutal. It was like watching Alabama play Alabama St. Everyone on Brother Rice is just bigger than Groves. The first play on offense for Brother Rice was a slant (or some other short-to-mid-range route across the middle of the field) and the receiver just weaved in and out of the defense for 70 yards. Runs were often 10 yards before the RB got touched. It was just a complete domination due to physically-gifted players at every position.
Brother Rice is like that in pretty much every sport. They have feeder programs at the lower levels and they recruit players to their schools. Obviously, there has to be some skill on Malzone's part, but he is surrounded by great players and has been since he first started. Three straight titles to me is a reflection of the skill across the team, not necessarily his leadership skills. A lot of the yards (from what I saw) are YAC and that is a reflection of the skill on his team. It's also a reason that they can keep the playbook simple with short, quick throws, which increases his completion percentage.
Long story short, I think he'll be great for us, especially if we end up with some sort of passing spread. I just wouldn't read too much into those numbers as there is just too much of a disparity of talent in high school sports for them to mean much.
|26 weeks 2 days ago||I'm not sure why that||
I'm not sure why that matters. Coaches sign extensions all the time. If Michigan (or any other program) doesn't come knocking on his door, he needs to ensure his future. $250k is basically nothing if Michigan thinks that this is the guy that puts Michigan in the top 5 year after year.

The loophole that Aereo found is based on the fact that the signal was being broadcast for free. ABC could have easily fixed this themselves by preventing the signal from being broadcast over the air, but then they'd lose out on advertising revenue. It was publicly stated that if the SCOTUS didn't rule in their favor that this was plan B. Now, they can have their cake and eat it too.
I wouldn't mind if this really was violating some kind of law or if the law was changed to ban this, but if you go through the steps, you can't find a legal issue with this. The reasoning behind the ruling boils down to the fact that it should be illegal (and I can agree with that), but the fact that it isn't illegal should mean that they have to rule in the favor of Aereo. I can legally buy an antenna and a DVR and host them at my house. I can legally rent an antenna and a DVR and host them at my house. Shouldn't I be legally allowed to rent an antenna and a DVR and have someone else host them for me? Their answer to this is no because they think that it looks like something else that is illegal.

Some estimates come from cable companies. Others are calculated. For example, I saw an article a couple of years ago that stated ESPN receives $5 per cable subscription and only 25% of those subscribed actually watched the channel. So, in order ESPN to maintain their current revenue, they'd need to charge $20 and retain all of their viewers. That doesn't account for people who would only get it for the season either. It's tricky to calculate, but I'd imagine that ESPN would go to a more predictable model like PPV. In any event, I think the price of sports channels will go through the roof.
|1 year 6 days ago||I'm not sure where they get||
I'm not sure where they get the $37 from. MLB.tv costs $20/month. I've seen estimates that ESPN alone would need to charge $20/month minimum to break even in terms of revenue and that didn't take into account people dropping the channel after the season for their sport of choice is over.
Also, it's not just the $37 for sports. It's the $30 (rumors from a while back) for HBO and $10 each for FX, AMC, ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS (or insert whichever channels your favorite TV shows are on) that all add up to $127 while cutting out those other channels that you don't watch. Maybe you don't watch any TV shows, but a majority of people do and they will have a hard time cutting out various stations due to their shows being on them.

Second, if you think the backlash after the rape scene was bad, wait until they hint at a 12-year-old, let alone an 8-year-old, getting married and potentially having sex with what basically amounts to an adult woman. I don't think that they are going to touch that one with a ten-foot pole.
Basically, I'm fine with how they are handling the child actors getting older. Unless they plan on changing out the actors every season to keep them young, there's not a whole lot that they can do.

I know there are some Brand New fans on this board.
This thread reminded me to check Brand New's site for shows (even though it's almost impossible to get tickets even when you know they are going on sale ahead of time). They are playing several shows in the midwest in July with tickets still available on Ticketmaster.
I desperately want to go, but I can't justify spending the money this year, so I thought I'd pass along the info to others who might be interested.

I don't disagree that, in general, it is unfair to the kids. I think there are numerous reasons that a kid should be able to transfer schools without penalty. I just don't think that following a coach is one of them.
I think I'd just like to see some middle ground where there is an appeal process to allow kids who want to transfer for legitimate reasons (e.g. change of degree, home sickness, change of system with little to no chance of playing time, etc.) to do so without penalty.

This is the exact reason that the one-year rule is in place. Kids should not be following coaches from school to school.

I'm not claiming that. However, when you say that Rutgers has done something that we haven't done in 6 years, he's trying to make a direct comparison. However, the SEC team to which he is referring went 3-9 last year. Out of the three SEC teams that we've played in the given timeframe, none finished the season with fewer than 9 wins. I'm just pointing out that Rutgers beating a team that went 0-8 in the SEC says almost nothing about Rutgers just like Michigan beating Vanderbilt in 2006 said nothing about Michigan (it wasn't until we eviscerated ND in week 3 that we started getting attention).

They should do 2 timeouts per half. There is no reason to have 4 timeouts per team plus 4 TV timeouts in a 20 minute half. 2 timeouts per half, 2 minutes each, do not allow a coach to call timeout after one was just called. That should allow coaches plenty of time to coach their players rather than use the timeouts as a way of stopping momentum or to gain a strategic edge.
As for the shot clock, I think they should have 10 seconds to get it across half court and then a 25-second shot clock should start. Potentially, (especially against teams that do full court press) you don't lose any time on offense. However, 25 seconds in your offensive half will force teams to try to score rather than sit on the ball to kill clock. Rebounds with kickouts are now worth 10 seconds less of clock time.
I don't agree with the elimination of live ball timeouts. Increase their value to make teams question whether they should call a timeout.
The one thing that I really want is for a shoulder into the chest of a defender to be a charge every time. If that's the case, then the defender clearly has position and the offensive player is trying to draw a foul. Keep everything else about the charge/block calls the same for all I care. If they took care of this, it would eliminate a lot of blown calls.
