More opt-out fests. Early spring practice.

We're viewed (maybe…

We're viewed (maybe justifiably) as more obnoxious in general. Think Notre Dame and Duke basketball. We don't just win but we win the right way. It's the academics plus athletics. It's why getting caught with the Stalions thing was so delicious to so many people.

Better to be Calvin and…

Better to be Calvin and Hobbes than Charlie Brown.

Just so you know you're not…

Just so you know, you're not alone. I also couldn't care less about the touch football game, except for how it has negatively affected the dueling columns. They are far more enjoyable when they are about the school and football rivalry that all students and alumni can relate to. I don't care about their personal problems with each other.

Where I disagree with you--making my opinion even more unpopular than yours--is that I don't even think the State News idea is a good idea. As I stated earlier, it's a form of emotional blackmail being used to hide their own agenda (not wanting to play the game) and then using it to gaslight The Daily and act like they're the bad guys because The Daily won't help them with their humanitarian effort.

People do not co-write opinion pieces. If the State News editorial board wants to write about FOIAs, go right ahead. It's not more powerful because they got The Daily to co-sign it.

If the State News wants to stop playing the game because The Daily bashes them every year, rubs their face in it, and is extremely unpleasant and obnoxious about it, then just say that. At least it would be the truth.

Of course they could do both…

Of course they could do both. That the State News EIC would propose it as an either/or makes this a more transparent ploy than Mel Tucker's FMLA claim.

I applaud The Daily for not submitting to this emotional blackmail.

Dhani Jones was on staff…

Dhani Jones had photo credits with the Daily.

Anyone can join the Daily staff whereas MSU has a J school. It’s possible they only allow J-school students on staff.

That has always been the case. Wasn’t an issue until the last decade or so apparently.

Why 2036?

Unless something…

Why 2036?

Unless something changes we will have three other presidential elections before that and he's already passed the minimum age requirement.

I guess you could call that…

I guess you could call that Brady starting

Well he started the game, so, yeah, I'd call that Brady starting. It'd be pretty weird to call it Drew Henson starting.

Brady almost always ended up as "the hot hand" to play the majority of the 2nd half and by the end of the season was the unquestioned starter with Henson as a clear backup.

This is an issue I am very…

This is an issue I am very passionate about. I'm glad to see everyone here acknowledge that Brady started every game while Drew Henson and Brady were on the team together. The notion that Brady ever backed up Henson is probably my number 1 Michigan football misinformation pet peeve. I hate it.

1999 was my freshman year. I'm not from the state and didn't follow much college football before getting to Michigan, but I was very excited to throw myself into the sport.

I was a Tom Brady guy all the way in 1999. I didn't know anything about Drew Henson, and all I could ever see was that when Brady was in the game, we moved the ball, and when Henson was in, we didn't.

I think it was fairly split on whether people wanted Brady or Henson to be the main guy, up until the MSU game. Then I think pretty much everyone was Team Brady, and I think that might be the last game they split time.

I still love Henson, though, and he balled out better in 2000 than Brady did in 1999.

The funny thing is, if I followed the team then the way I do now, I would probably have been pro-Henson in 1999. Heading into 2022, I definitely wanted to see JJ win the job.

The only argument for…

The only argument for rooting for Nebraska is conference pride, and let's face it, Huskers aren't the Big Ten and conferences aren't a thing anymore.

Go Buffs.

First thing I'm going to…

First thing I'm going to need is a driver.

Zero Big Ten wins in program…

Zero Big Ten wins in program history? False. Zero last year, yes.

Game thread had it covered…

Game thread had it covered. But worthy of a separate thread.

Impressive.

Impressive.

Okay. I'm not saying it's…

Okay. I'm not saying it's Ebetts Field and the Baker Bowl, but it's still a lot better than The Vet and it's not totally stale. And they're not all like the Jake and PNC, but yes, there are several that are basically Camden Yards without the warehouse.

What the 1900-1940s…

What the 1900-1940s ballparks have along with the 1990s to present is character. Also, I do like the downtown view at CoPa versus Tiger Stadium, as a point in the new park’s favor.

I agree the intimacy of a small park with posts is preferable to the last row of today’s upper deck. But I also have a phobia about obstructed views, and I think most of the seats in new parks are good. In my memory—which may be flawed—the new ChiSox park was uniquely egregious.

Hopefully the next generation of engineers will be able to build stadiums that go straight up without posts.

The loss to Marquette hurt…

The loss to Marquette hurt. Hofstra being close was disconcerting. Disappointing this is still where we're at as a program.

Would be nice to get the results against Harvard and Notre Dame for sure, but I'm ready to not lose every Big Ten game. Let's win 3 games in conference.

I'm sad that I didn't ever…

I'm sad that I didn't ever get to the old Comiskey. I did see New Comiskey and have the same memory as you; upper deck, players looked like ants. Even The Big Hurt.

I also never got to see The Ballpark in Arlington. Didn't think they'd trash it after 20 years.

Fortunately, I did get to see Tiger Stadium, which never got its due as a rival of Fenway and better than Wrigley.

SkyDome (Rogers Centre, whatever) and New Comiskey (U.S. Cellular, Guaranteed Rate, whatever) are gar-bage. Everything else of the modern era, starting obviously with Camden Yards, has been a gem. Even the ones that have gone away from the "old" feel are nice. But ask me again in 30 years, I guess.

What a fickle fanbase.

What a fickle fanbase.

We should probably be…

We should probably be swapped with Notre Dame in the rankings.

We should leave the Big Ten,…

We should leave the Big Ten, become an Independent, and schedule our way into the CFP.

First of all, you wouldn't…

First of all, you wouldn't use the AAA teams. All the players are owned by the MLB teams. That's the issue with using AAA teams.

If your issue is just that bad teams would get promoted and then relegated the next year, well, that's how it works.

Perhaps, though, the pro sports should have two, not three, tiers.

The Tigers would be in Tier 2.

MBHS?

MBHS?

That's not what was stated…

That's not what was stated above. I like to win bowl games and it can help a program. But it doesn't kickstart your next season.

And it doesn't actually…

And it doesn't actually change what happens the following season

I have never understood the belief that it does. Momentum from December/January to September with a new team?

I don't get it.

Agree. That could get Messi.

Agree. That could get Messi.

College basketball probably…

College basketball probably doesn't need the relegation because the tournament takes so many schools anyway.

College football it makes perfect sense.

Right now, the only way a school like UCF or Boise State can win the title is to be really good for a long time and hope to be invited into a big conference. This is the path Utah (which boasts two undefeated seasons with wins in a BCS bowl while in the MWC) is on the cusp of. This is not equitable.

If a school like UCF gets really good while it's in Tier 2 and is promoted, they get promoted into a Tier with, at most, 40 teams. All 40 teams, with equitable scheduling, will have an equal chance of winning the title.

This will never happen for many reasons. It's the death of conferences, the death of rivalries where teams don't stay at the same tier, and also the death of scheduling games 15 years in advance. But it makes a ton of sense.

Every sport should have a…

Every sport should have a relegation system with three tiers. Especially college football and basketball.

The tier 2 and 3 levels should be played in the offseason of tier 1.

NBA, NHL, and MLB should have separate league tournaments in season. It should not be done all at one time midseason. It should be done throughout the year, obviously like soccer.

MLB should have their schedule so that it is always a four game series from Thursday to Sunday. Each week should also feature a  Friday to Monday series for a national Monday night game.

NBA and NHL should take division winners and then the remaining top 8 teams regardless of conference and reseed the whole league 1-16 for the playoffs and go back to a best of 5 first round.

Don’t encourage The Daily…

Don’t encourage The Daily. The dueling columns used to be about the real football game. Then we started losing and The Daily got tired of defending Hoke and started focusing on their touch football games and journalism awards.

They should just send each other emails and not bother to publish these columns.

That said, the State News’ jealously of The Daily was as hilariously little brother as it gets.

I was diagnosed with mono…

I was diagnosed with mono and walked to Crisler for a Duke game in the Ellerbe era...unless it was Amaker. We got pasted. I stood for the first half but sat for the second half.

Some people questioned if I had mono. If there's mild mono, I had it.

Update: Yeah, Amaker. It was 2001.

I have commented on this in…

I have commented on this in the past and then people have attacked me for being an ignoramus. I suspect that will happen again. Nevertheless:

MSU -16 is absurd. That's exactly why you should expect them to cover. The public will jump on Illinois plus 16. That's what the oddsmakers want.

No, not every game on the board can be judged this way.

Yes, usually the sharp money is what moves lines.

No, this doesn't work 100% of the time because Vegas doesn't actually fix games (or at least can't ensure the fixes).

Yes, sometimes bookmakers actually need a certain side and set the line to get what they want.

Interesting question. I don…

Interesting question. I don't know exactly why it is the case, but perhaps this will change how you think about it. This was sent to me many years ago and I feel it is relevant here:

In the aftermath of the initial Free Press story in August 2009, I went on the attack.  I sent an e-mail to Free Press writer Shannon Shelton, who covers the Michigan State beat.  Shelton is a Jemele Hill clone – female, graduated from Michigan State, more of a fan than a journalist, wrote for The State News, terrible writing skills.  (I realize the last two mean the same thing).  It read as follows:

Shannon,

Undoubtedly your Free Press colleagues Rosenberg and Snyder are taking a tremendous amount of heat for their stories about the Michigan football program this week.  As a believer in the role of the news media, I fully defend their right to investigate.  I want my football program to be one that follows the rules.

Perhaps the outrage from Michigan fans is in part due to the fact that their counterpart on the Michigan State beat does not show an inclination toward investigative reporting of any kind.  You would rather write stories about how Greg Jones was Academic All-Big Ten or how Andrew Hawken has great leadership skills.

So why don’t you drop your popcorn, take the autographed picture of Tom Izzo off your desk, and embrace the investigative responsibilities of your beat?  If you are unable or unwilling to do this, I’m sure the Free Press can pair you with another reporter that can cover your weaknesses in this area.

I want something else to get…

I want something else to get me through this.

(Or perhaps, I wish that you would step back from that ledge, my friend.)

the refs should be held to greater account for their calls.

This should be the case with or without in-game replay.

There are some systems that I could live with and not hate with a passion but I can’t think of any that currently exist.

Is she aware? I missed that…

Is she aware? I missed that part. All I remember is her saying they were both on the front page. Anyway, who gives a shit? He gives a shit. Why does she give a shit that he gives a shit? Seems like it’s a one-sided relationship between Holly and Kornheiser.

In ten years when The NCAA…

In ten years when The NCAA dissolves and the Mark Cuban organization takes over and tradition is totally dead, I propose we exclude Illinois from our conference. They are pointless along with Rutgers.

Holly, I don’t know if you…

Holly, I don’t know if you listen to Tony K’s pod or not, but I am going to guess not. If you get that worked up over his rants, Kornheiser is not for you.

Further, while I have yet to hear that episode, based on your description of his rant, you’re wrong anyway. Was his rant over the top? Undoubtedly. But placement on a page can indicate priority. That’s why “above the fold” is a thing. And even if both were above the fold (which at this time is unknown to me) placement can still matter. I would trust Kornheiser’s judgment on this.

And the Mystics winning the title later in no way sticks it to him. I am betting that’s his preference, albeit not a passionate desire.

What if the Nats win the World Series? Does that stick it to you? By your way of thinking, evidently yes.

I don’t know that story…

I don’t know that story. Which one took the pro-rape side? Or is it actually Holly Sonders, which would make more sense.

I think the moderators are…

I think the moderators are doing a good job. The really egregious stuff gets pulled. If it weren't for "bad" threads then there would be no threads. Why even have a message board then? Which brings me to my next point:

Bring back haloscan, or some approximation of it. A live chat is needed. People just want to talk ball and post snowflakes all day long. The message board is our only place right now.

Plus, I hate refreshing constantly.

I would still keep the message board for news items.

There's a fair bit of…

There's a fair bit of pessimism here, which I suppose is warranted. But I think it's fair to say that Iowa ain't played nobody, other than ISU, which only kind of counts. And of course they didn't wallop ISU.

Michigan 34, Iowa 20.

Our faith in Shea and Gattis to beat slightly above-average Big Ten teams is restored.
